  • Hello! I've been having a lot of fun playing the "Commando"-level difficulty, which is pretty challenging, so I though I would share 5 tips for choosing your starting tips at higher difficulty levels in Jagged Alliance 3.

    Blood is the most underrated merc in the Veteran tier (and the whole Vet Tier is amazing). Easily kills the most out of all my mercs. Easily. He is not a traditional melee or stealth character. he just needs to be close when it pops off. High AP with free move buffs. Cheap attacks. Just decimates. Throwing knives pierce armor because they are melee attacks. His special ability is like the Fire on the Move ability for pistols but it gets two attacks during the move. I teamed him with Raven who's special Marks targets in her Overwatch (Raven = expensive). Thus, Blood CRITS all his knife throws at those poor bastards in her overwatch....its nuts.

      I like Blood a lot too. Throwing knives are awesome. He will probably be the next hire in my Commando-difficulty LP.

      He is an instant hire for me. He is great at mopping up enemies. I'm about 10h into my play through and I have him set up with a silenced MP5 and he's doing fantastic at the close range fights. I'll probably switch out his weapon for a shotgun

      @@rDunfee Really love Blood too, but he's usually a little too expensive for me to hire (without giving up someone else I want/need) at the beginning. It's a tradeoff - totally understand getting him early though.

    I prefer to set MED to 0 and STR to 40 on my IMP so he has 85 LDR this gives +60% speed on strat map, and I use it as a sniper or machinegunner

      100% agree. I think, a the time of recording this video, I hadn't yet figured out the leadership effect on strategic map speed yet.

    If money was the only factor the choices are pretty easy. However you have to look at the stats, skills and perks. Also the merc availability is random so you may not get to hire the merc you want right off at the beginning. You may have to wait until later in the game.

      100% I've been thinking about the timing of when to hire certain Mercs and which Mercs work well together in tandem. I also don't talk about relationships between mercs which I might talk about in a future video but I don't feel like I have a good handle yet on how those relationships translate to the battlefield besides banter. I suspect it affects the morale system which is something I want to explore in a future video.

    My start group was: Fox, Wolf, Kalyna and Barry... I dont wanna play Steroid, because it denies to get Fox and Steroids AP is TERRIBLE! Kalyna on the other hand does have an OK marksmanship and enough AP, also her passive (ignoring armor) is pretty strong! Afterwards i took Livewire, because Kalyna is kinda the allrounder with her high leadership and technical knowledge, but you need more tech, so Livewire was the logical choice. And i bought Scope now from the Gold-Tier with 99 marksmanship and a Dragunov she is deleting enemies... Pretty good combo and i have no money problems. It is finally a really good Jagged Alliance again, feels like the old ones! And Fox is actually pretty strong with her ability too, a surprise round after she shot at somebody instead of INSTANT combat is good.

      Pairing Fox with Wolf makes a lot of sense. I can't wait to try Scope, but I'm too poor at the moment in my Let's Play. I'm not a big fan of Steroid also.

      Yeah you do have to give up a lot to play steroid....MD doesn't like him and livewire straight up refuses to work with him.

      I had the same starting squad but if i were to choose again, i would take livewire over kalyna. Kalyna's mech is not high enough and the physical stats are also poor, requiring quite a lot of training if you want to give her higher level traits.

    Livewire and Barry seem to be just the most no-brainer must have starting merc, Mouse also have pretty high med (she's a nurse) on top of being one of the best stealth character. Steroids have high marksmanship but shitty dexterity so it doesn't quite work out that well. Not having explosive points means even throwing a stick grenade might be problematic I think, and you can forget about anything else less standard like Molotov cocktails. finding medicine in the wild seem to be mostly just a wisdom check and not medical check.

    • @bitsizedgamer8698

      Barry is for sure a no brainer. Livewire, to me, is a Day 2 or Day 3 hire as her strength comes from her abilities in the strategy layer of the game. The first few days are combat intensive so I like to bring Kalyna for those days. Check out my Commando-difficulty LP, and thanks for the comment!

      @@bitsizedgamer8698 Can other people also do the hacking thing for money? but you're right at the highest level Livewire's initial marksmanship is a bit too poor. Also yes getting the shotgun early on is super useful against low to unarmored goons. Mouse's initial gun has a basic silencer which means she can silent kill pretty easily.

    • @bitsizedgamer8698
      @bitsizedgamer8698  Рік тому +4

      @@richardchen9912 Others can do the hacking thing for money. I've seen Kalyna do it. That being said, however, you need mechanical skill to even spot the hackable device and there's another mechanical skill check to determine how much you actually get upon hacking the device. In my Let's Play, Kalyna doesn't even see the hackable device inside of the house in the first sector, whereas Livewire can see it and hack it for $2,000.

      Livewire's Mechanical allows you to do more special Mechanical Salvage on maps and Her special gives Double Intel. Like the damaged truck on DeeDee Bombastic's map gives 10 parts if you don't fail the skill check. Barry's 67 couldn't do it. Her Scoundrel Dialogue is great if you take MD instead of Fox. Her two biggest gripes are she has 4 back pack slots and has 62 marksmanship. Hey that's why you rolled your IMP with all that leadership right? ;0

      @@WitchZer0 Haha! I like Livewire a lot. I think it's possible to conquer Ernie Island in 3 days. My thinking was to take Kalyna for the first 3 days while we conquer Ernie Island, and then bring in Livewire to go collect the parts and hack the machines that we left behind and for the rest of the run. That was my thinking at least. In my Let's Play, I hire Livewire on Day 2 or 3.

    Fox’s ability is superior for starting a fight. She can kill two enemies right off the bat. She’s great for stealth has lots of AP and her marksmanship is good enough at the start and grows quickly as you utilize her ambush ability.
    Kalyna sucks, you will be drowning in sniper rifles by the time you need them - save your money.
    Do not sleep on Livewire’s ability to give real-time locations of all enemies on the map.
    Your custom merc should have maxed leadership. The affect on travel time is spectacular. You’ll be able to move farther faster without being tired. High leadership is the rarest skill available in the game among all mercs. Custom merc should Dump the utility skills (mec, exp, med). You will have other mercs for those and they will be far better at it. Leadership and combat skills are key for custom merc. You can train their utility skills very quickly if you want them to be a master of all.
    Always begin combat from stealth with you surprising the enemy. It is the best tactic in real life and in the game. Killing your enemies before they can try to kill you back is just always better.

    General tip: Consider making a script before recording the video. All those "uhm"s, "erm"s, long pauses and especially the smacking makes it rather uncomfortable to listen personally.
    On the topic:
    The starting equipment is not really worth worrying about. Already on the starting island you will get plenty of loot (including several Gewehr) and therefor replace this stuff.
    Also what wasn't mentioned at all: Consider team dynamics, since those will affect morale or result in higher fees for mercs, or in worst case mercs leaving or refusing to join your team.
    For example Steroid is bullying M.D. who will ask for more money. Also Mouse will be bothered by "macho-man" steroid. The proud US-American Grizzly will be uncomfortable with Russians in the team. Some female mercs have a problem with the seductive Fox, including buns and Mouse. And the list goes on...

    • @bitsizedgamer8698
      @bitsizedgamer8698  Рік тому +1

      Thanks! Yes, a script is a good idea. Synergies and relationships are something I should talk about, but I don't have a good understanding yet on how they affect morale or otherwise, affect gameplay.
