Serial numbers are not always fool-proof. I’ve heard that some counterfeiters will get a list of a few good serial numbers from authentic clubs and etch/laser etch those numbers onto the fake club. This would defeat the “simple phone call”. Serial numbers are easy to get from pics of clubs on eBay - sellers usually show the serial number as “proof” of authenticity.
