I was spending around £60 per month on various streaming services. I stopped cold turkey and have moved back to buying DVD's, Bluerays etc. Just picked up the complete Columbo DVD collection at less than £30. Bargain.
@@i_used_adblock_to_watch_this That's unfair. For some, they prefer streaming services. My one good friend loves movies, but hates collecting. You aren't a superior human for hoarding boxes of media.
4 reasons to buy DVDs/Blu rays over digital copies: 1. You actually own the copy and no one can take it away from you. Unless your house gets burglarised, but that's actually less likely to happen than the company being a jerk. 2. The quality is always better, particularly on blu-ray disc. An Internet connection for HD just isn't always reliable. Plus the service has full control over it. 3. You get more bonus features 4. You can sell the film if you don't like it
Physical media wins hands down as far as I’m concerned. Streaming services can and do totally remove content and edit / censor stuff from time to time. With discs you get the movie or series and frequently extras, interviews and deleted scenes. You can also watch it anytime you want to. Some older, rare and OOP stuff will simply never make it onto streaming channels!
Right on. Besides the more recent stuff I also like silent films, early sound and some cult classics that were originally a flop in the theaters and you won't find that stuff on streaming channels. Even Turner Classic Movies has scaled back on the older films, sad but true.
With a huge collection of DVD's, if TV & movies disappeared tomorrow, I would still have more media to watch that I ever could for the rest of my life. Great video once again. Keep it up!
Streaming has a place, but so does physical media. We need both. I am finding some old TV show that are only available on streaming. With streaming it costs less to stream a show than to put it on DVD. Shows like "The Girl With Something Extra" with Sally Field will never be released on DVD. There have been others too. But again, DVDs need to be available too.
If we did not have streaming many old TV shows, we would never see. I am an old TV buff. I would like to have everything on DVD. I generally do, as I can record onto DVD from any source. But a lot of off the wall stuff will never be on DVD, as few would buy it. Being into classic TV, I prefer buying it on DVD, if available. But if it isn't, I will take it in any form I can get it in. A another example is the Disney Vault. Disney has never released most of that on DVD, and probably never will. I have gotten a lot of old TV concerts off streaming that were never released on media either. I constantly look for old TV shows I liked as a kid. I have quite a list, which will never be on DVD. I also try to find the old classic shows U.S. shows never released in the U.S., but released in Australia or the UK. They are in Regions 2 or something else. I even have a multi-region DVD player that can handle PAL and regions. The old show "Kentucky Jones" from 1964 has never been released in the U.S. It was released in Germany, but dubbed in German. I could go on and on, but as much as I would like everything on DVD or any physical media source is not going to happen. The old TV Show "Eight is Enough", the first season was released on DVD, but season 2-5 I had to order from WB and those were sold by order and they are a burn. Otherwise I would never have had it. In reality, since I can record from any source, I do have everything available I want on DVD. So I guess, I make it into physical media.
You would think Disney would put those great shows when we were growing up on their channel for the likes of us. I loved The Wonderful World Of Disney and the Jacques Cousteau series. I'd happily pay to see them again @@patrickmartin4996
Yes indeed. Some of the old Disney programs are available on You Tube, but the picture quality is not the best on many of them. When I picked up Disney+ for the 3 year deal of $140 (Ad free), when they first came on, we were promised that their whole library would be available in time, except for like "Song of the South". So far very very little has been released from the Disneyland & Wonderful World of Color eras. I dropped Disney+ after the 3 year period. It just is not worth it. If they would get the vault open, I would re-sub immediately. So far, nothing. Disney has always been very picky on what & when they release DVD's, so I would guess Disney+ would not be any different.
Totally agree with you. There's a charity shop near me that does 4 dvd's for £1. Nuts. I've started picking up movies that I already love or are highly rated to store away for the future. But don't forget to eat healthy (boycott highly processed food completely) and exercise. Live life free from chronic disease and pain while enjoying your films.
We should also keep supporting HMV and Zavvi etc to keep new releases coming as well. It is also nice to get remastered versions of our favourite films in steelbook or box set versions. I'm glad new films like Oppenheimer are still released on physical media. Physical media will always be there as long as us fans and collectors buy them. It's not just about collecting, preserving , it's also our hobby and it's fun dammit!!!
Fully agree, sadly though the Belgian/Dutch Zavvi over here barely sells any physical movies anymore since a few months. I guess other regions will follow
I have been buying used dvd boxsets for a couple of years now. I ditched Netflix for the usual reasons i.e generally disappointing content and time consuming searches for anything interesting. I'm 57 and love anything produced in the 70s and 80s especially for the nostalgia. Currently I'm binging on a Secret Army boxset from the 70s. It's excellent, well acted and a snip at £30.
So glad to have found your channel! I have been buying DVD's again for a few months now and it has been a game changer. It has also helped me to become more deliberate in my viewing and as such I have watched some real classics that I would have missed if I'd have left it up to the algorithm (which never seems to know what I want) All the best! - Typebiter
As a child, I collected VHS tapes sometime in the early 2000s I got rid of all my VHS tapes and started collecting DVDs. I regret getting rid of some of those VHS tapes since they never made it to DVD and probably about 2006 or so I started collecting Blu-ray’s. My collection now has over 6000 titles and I love it. Unfortunately there’s a ton of stuff that I also enjoy on streaming that has not made it to physical media. I am still waiting for season three of Stranger Things. Hopefully soon it’ll come out with a really fancy box set like I did for the first two. How to plan on getting rid of my streaming it is expensive and I don’t find anything on there I want to watch.
I had to cancel my streaming services for a few months recently, and was forced to realize that after all that money, I had zero to show for it. Now I am having such a good time hunting for items for my physical collection. And now streaming companies are trying to get us used to ads again, even though we’re already paying them! Ridiculous.
yep i'm always told streaming is so much cheaper than buying the dvd or bluray etc.. maybe at one time yes but not really anymore in my opinion. if you buy movies every week and spend hundreds of dollars/pounds wherever you happen to live than yes it is cheaper but if you don't... i can see if you have a small out or apartment or Flat but most people are just to lazy to do anything anymore. best buys i think is stopping selling it cause Amazon is taking their business.
I was VERY close to selling most of my dvds because of convenient streaming. Thankfully, i didnt. I even bought some cheap classic movie collections this week. Havent bought dvds in many years. I just dont want to give Disney and Netflix my money anymore. So happy i still have my favorite comedy classic collections. Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello, Three Stooges, Marx Brothers, etc. I imagine they will be edited for content at some point. Just picked up a Don Knotts 5 movie collection for ten bucks. Im going to get the Get Smart series collection soon. Loved the show as a kid, but never picked it up. Make DVDs great again!
I just found your channel and I whole heartedly agree. TV shows and movies are traded between streaming platforms so what you watch could just vanish behind another platform you have zero intention of subscribing too. That and also its just really pricey long term. I'm currently not subscribed to any platform. I got a bunch of dvds and vhs tapes and after this video I might go get more.
You are spot on. As for price, it is a bit more for me because, as a long-time collector, I already have a very large collection of DVD, Blu-ray, and even VHS. So, when I'm shopping for more, I'm usually looking for something specific. I still usually pay under or around $10 for a DVD or Blu-ray. I have paid much more, such as $85 for the Cleopatra 2525 series and $65 for Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy on DVD. I was more than happy to pay $145 for Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Chosen Collection box set... loads of exclusive extras in that set. One thing a lot of people aren't aware of is the advantages of audio and video quality. I read about this and tested it myself, and because of varying bit rates on streaming services, a physical Blu-ray has significantly better audio and video quality than a 4K movie streaming. The 4K only signifies pixels on screen, not bit rate. That, I had to see for myself, and it held true.
I never gave up collecting DVD's, Blu-ray's and 4K. We've now a collection of 2,000 films and TV series. We haven't streamed for years and don'#t miss the wokery/
We had stacks of DVDs and VHS donated when we had a fund raising yard sale for our granddaughter, during her cancer treatments. We sold what we could and gave away the rest. Someone even took the VHS! We do have a few sets of DVDs here, Flashpoint, a Canadian police show, and a bunch of old Daniel Boon shows that our boys loved. And of course Anne of Green Gables! We don’t watch often, but I keep them anyway. I’ve also passed lots of educational sets on to our oldest daughter for her kids.
@@JamesMurphyYT it was one of my favourite books when I was young. There are many versions on video, but the best, in my opinion is the one with Megan Follows. All of the caters in that one just seem perfect for the parts.
This is what I've been trying to say to people for years. Thanks for "speaking" for me James and hopefully your video will help people continue to catch on.
I love dvds. I'm into children’s tv programmes. A lot of children’s tv producers relied on the sales of DVDs to help fund their next programme. But with the decline in sale's alot of the companies have gone bust.
Streaming is basically renting forever, but without the choice of what you'd like to watch. I'm much happier buying both new and old BluRays/4Ks, without risk of changes in the future like censorship or directorial fiddling (directors cuts) which aren't always for the better. I've built a large collection of film and TV over the last 20 years. I'm in a position to never be bored. I have a running list of films I haven't watched recently and I'm going through that list. My realisation was that I spent more time scrolling Amazon Prime or Netflix (the only two I have) than watching anything. Then putting something on, just because of scrolling fatigue. But the thing that's going to completely destroy streaming is the forced introduction of adverts. It's NOT acceptable for Amazon Prime to bill me, then change the terms of the service for the worse. I will NOT be watching any streaming service when adverts are required or it's too expensive to pay for ad free versions. No thanks. Ultimately, there's 100 years of great films and TV available on physical media. I don't actually need new content if they don't offer it physically.
Yep - I stopped paying for any streaming services and I'm buying DVD's 4 for £1 at my local charity shops. They are practically giving them away and I've amassed a large collection of movies that I actually OWN for far less than what I'd spend on streaming.
I just can't get enough of your videos. You are one of the many many people out there all over the world who enjoy watching TV shows or films without using Streaming Service. And there are so many who think it's dumb that us ones who collect certain shows or films on DVD/Blu-rays don't need all them but you have a point. I remember when Netflix's contract with a certain kids show ran out and my friend couldn't watch them anymore. Now he was already half way through the older shows. So to me it's not like he was going to be missing out knowing they would either be on TV or even on another streaming service. I'm glad to know there are older generations who think owning DVDs/Blu-rays are so much better then watching them online. Thanks again for another great video.
I got to say this is a pretty great channel. You have great content. I love DVDs. I love CDs. I love Blu-ray. I love the feel of being able to own it and not be subject to regulation or any other goofy requirements. I love the fact that I have to actually physically put it in a player, get up and actually move once in a while, lol
Funnily enough, I just started going back to the DVD cupboard tonite. I enjoyed 2001, A Space Odyssey through the soundsystem. It was awesome. My DVD/Blu Ray Cupboard is a beautifully curated collection. Glad I've gone back to it.
@@JamesMurphyYT Do you know there's a few of us who have bought all the right equipment just so we can still enjoy TRON:Legacy in 4K BluRay, 3D, through the Dolby soundsystem. When I'm finished, I'll be one of those people. I'm looking forward to it.
Another one is, with streaming services, if you're paying money each month for it, you feel obligated to watch it, otherwise you'd be wasting your money. You might go through a period where you're not watching much tv though, you're doing other things. So then you'd think you're kind of wasting money on it, and you may even force yourself to watch it so as to get your money's worth. With physical medai though, there's no such urgency. You feel more at ease to watch it whenever.
The TV show Scrubs has had significant portions of its soundtrack changed by streaming services due to licensing issues. In addition, three episodes have been permanently removed due to certain jokes being taboo. That's a good reason to physically own the DVD's of that show.
I agree with you. I love to have the physical media. The art covers for the disc are great. And you can watch it whenever you want. It is a different feeling popping in a disc to watch a movie compared to getting one streaming from Netflix. Previously I would buy 2 copies of a movie when it comes out. One to watch right away with the family the other keep unopen as a collection. Used to go to Blockbuster and Hollywood videos and buy their bin DVDs. Got a lot of dvds and blu rays from garage sales and flea markets. Lots of times the movie is either so old or licensing issue that it is not available anywhere else.
At least with physical media if you get banned from a shop that shop then can't barge into your home and take away all the CDs/DVDs/BDs that you ever bought from them unlike if you bought stuff off UA-cam. If you spent hundreds of pounds on movies from UA-cam and they ban you you lose all those purchases. I don't have the space for DVDs and BDs unless you throw away the cases. I know you can buy sleeves to store the case sleeve, booklet and disc(s). I got a small collection of Steelbook BDs
Excellent points. I’m a streamer but have just started picking up discs for cheap of films that are hard to find, even while subscribing to multiple and even overlapping streamers since content.
Another great video sir. Old videogames from older consoles, are now getting crazy expensive!! Even common games you can't seem to buy them under 10€, when at a certain time they would cost you pennies! Now, there are some rare DVDs already going for top dollar. But I see them only increasing over time, and they will increase for sure!!
Based on your previous video, I started buying Blu Rays through ebay, and it's working well so far. Thank you. My reason for preferring that is different than the ones you listed. I don't watch many movies or TV shows (I prefer UA-cam and books), and when I sub to a service like Netflix, I end up spending more time watching junk than I want to. There is something about that all-you-can-eat buffet that keeps you eating. When I buy a the selected Blu Ray, I can feed that to myself a little at a time (an hour in the evening), rather than being exposed to a whole catalog of nonsense and feeling like I should watch something to get my money's worth, then end up feeling like "why am I wasting my time watching this crap?" Anyhow, thanks for the video, and I agree, that's the way to go.
We have never been into streaming , we watch too much you tube. Another thing we have found reguarding DVD's , is trying to buy some films and found some were not available. But heck yeah, 2nd hand shops with all the DVD's to search through, is a bit time consuming, but the thrill when you find one that you wanted.
You CAN watch your DVD or Blu Ray "Whenever you want" as long as your media player works properly. FYI, BUY another player as back up. Did that when PS2s were replaced. Now, with my video processor, I still can play ALL PS2 games in anamorphic widescreen and 4K. Xenosaga, anyone? /grins
They were excellent on DVD too - a lot of care & attention went into releasing the best possible product. I'm slowly upgrading to Blu-ray (4 series so far) and shedding my DVD's in order to free up space for more lovely disks.
My mum and her partner have tons of DVDs. Nearly all the DVDs they have, were found in bins and stuff. The only ones that have been bought is what I bought for them. I did give a few of my own DVDs to them as Xmas presents last year, because I didn't want them anymore
I'm not dropping my streaming service subscriptions anytime soon, but I'm also not giving up my DVDs and BluRays. I have movies I love that probably won't be available on streaming anytime soon, so I'm not going to let them go.
Great video. DVD's also come with a booklet. I prefer DVD's than streaming. You can watch your favorite movie as many times as you want and you own them.
Dear James Iv'e been buying box set DVD's for years. You are quite right the price of Box sets are climbing in some places. I was a big fan of Network but since they went bust a lot of their output has spiked.
I'm a big physical media collector I like to own/touch my film, with the art work, extras. Knowing no one will be able to take my movie from me. If the Internet went down that won't have any effect in me watching my favourite movies. The last thing is on streaming media they do cut out certain things, but with physical media that will never happen. Keep collectors those dvd/Blu rays. 😊
I do avidly collect DVDSs but am aware that players will eventually not be available. Had a player that conked out a couple of years ago and twas not easy to find a replacement 😮
I see that Amazon still have plenty for sale even if I've not heard of the makes of them. There are certain shops that still have them, so I've not noticed a lack of them but I can see it on the future.
Yeah I’m working on formatting my DVD series to mp4 of Andy Griffith, Mash, Roseanne, Everybody Loves Raymond, Are You Being Served, Keeping Up Appearances, Big Bang Theory, All in the Family, and putting them on my ssd external hard drive.
Slowly during past 5 years I started building my dvd collection and if I can't find the show/movie on dvd, buying bluray. I want to own my movies and shows.
It's become too much. Every bloody studio has their own now. If it's on one or the ones I have I'll watch it when I'm browsing, but I'm going back to physical media now
James, you are definitely not the only one... I've just ripped 633 CD albums to my computer NAS... and about to rip 350 DVD's to the same and box it for the garage... At £10.99 a month for Amazon music, £10.99 for Spotify, £17.99 Netflix, £6.99 for Paramount... £47 a month... that's £5k plus over 10 years.. You know, I stopped my Microsoft subscription and mow use Thunderbird for email, and Libreoffice... I've wasted £958 with microsoft for the last decade, wasted.. sick of subscription fees... A good NAS is £100-800... plus YT subscription which is what I value most... Yes... extremely disenfranchised...
During lockdown I got a blu ray player, then looked for people selling bulk sets so for a really small amount of money I ended up with so many. yep a couple of doubles but that did not matter as long as the total number of disc's I bought made it worth it. when you said internet, you then miss of needing a high data allowance to stream everything, easy use over 350gb in a month There is nothing wrong with streaming from sites like youtube, or other free sites were you can pick what to watch to mix something new in. it is better to watch some thing you like at the time YOU want to watch it, TV does not let you do that. so why pay a TV licence to the BBC that prevents you from watching tv channels that use adverts to make there living. Watch a complete series and just one click watch the next episode on the disc with out leaving the chair. No rushing home for that fav tv show that starts soon.
Man I’m 23 and I grew up with block buster and family video as my dvd stores here in Canada I started a brand new dvd collection and getting all my horror movies I want on dvd I’m beyond happy and it’s nostalgia sorry for the kids who didn’t grow up with a dvd store for there childhood I’m so grateful I did and love DVDs !! Thanks for the video all great points
Is streaming the future ? The price of streaming services just keeps on increasing...I am sticking with Physical media and there is plenty of them about..I am such a nerd I have my Blu ray player chipped so I can play Dvds and Blurays from around the world..😊
Good message your sending, Sandscratcher. I'm guess apartment living is more common in the UK, given the size differences between 🇺🇲 and 🇬🇧 Of coursr, I realize many urban dwellers in the States rent apartments, but for those with the room, buying physical copies is the smart way to go.
Also, if you were of a mind to do so, you could digitize all of your dvds onto an at home media server and act as your own streaming service. Just a thought.
As a new subscriber for the past 23 yrs I love the buzz the adrenalin walking into cex cash generators charity shops car boots not knowing what I'm going to search and buy for my massive collection.. Streaming sucks been there done it.. I've got 4 blu ray players 1 dvd player lol 😊
If streaming is done smartly by cycling in and out of your subscription status, it is far cheaper than buying individual movies that are easily accessible without bargain bin hunting at a thrift shop, especially digital rentals. I typically only want to watch a movie once unless it is an all-time favorite. Also, vinyl is very unique, and I don't expect DVD will ever have that same comeback on such a massive scale. In the end for me, convenience will always make streaming the better option.
I’ve totally run out of space so have sleeves about 150 DVDs. Doing this about 2.5 metres of DVD cases have been condensed into about 12 inches of sleeves. They look quite smart too. If I had the room I’d not have done this, but as I buy Blu-rays my storage is a wasting asset!
For me it was always a collectors thing, but now its that and ownership, preservation, censorship. I love seeing so many old and young thinking to themselves hey "i used to to have that"
I have a Rocky Collection on Blu Ray that showcases more of the dialogue and story development and less of the boxing, with longer uncut scenes. It makes the Rocky series so much better. I would have never seen these extras if I didn't own the physical media. Before getting this Rocky Collection, I didn't want to watch Rocky because the fight scenes were too long and kind of pointless in the end. Rocky was a great series because of who Rocky was as a person, and not what he did in the ring.
make Digital copies of your DVD's than upload them to your own cloud or store them on external hard drive, than you can stream them from the cloud or plug your external hard drive into your TV. This give you the benefits of owning the DVD but also the convenience of streaming. As far as I know your legally allowed to make digital copies of your DVDs for personal use, it's illegal to sell or pirate your digital copies.
at my old job i gave a friend some of those digital codes that i never use when i don't do that they just expire. i buy 4K's but if i'm lazy as my only 4K players is either my PS5 or my xbox's and i'm too lazy to hook those up i'll put the dvd in.
I have "accepted" the streaming platforms. What I don't want, is the streaming of live sports, which I'm afraid is coming. Well, of American football that is. Well done, James 🎉
The streaming platforms are here to stay. I prefer to watch sport by being there than on TV to be honest. I don't subscribe to any of the sport services in the UK. It's not thw same.as being there. Thanks Darin!
I agree with you about buying DVDs and Blu Rays. Though, I often can't buy them. Many shows that I like either are expensive or not available at all. Also, I don't have much physical space. I tend to prefer to do what I used to during the time of Napster and Emule.
I have started to get back into Blu ray and DVDs myself. I still watch streaming services, as its still my preferred choice for say TV series unless its something I will really enjoy like Game of thrones which I own on Blu Ray. Occasionally I will find a film I want to watch rather than the usual filler content these services seem to be full of. You are right though films or shows can just disappear from these streaming services. They are also getting more greedy with their subscription fees. I also find films look and sound better on Blu ray or even DVD on occasions. There's also more pleasure in choosing and playing a DVD/Blu ray.
As I mentioned in a previous video you did I love my retro tv shows. I bought a lot off the company Network that has sadly gone bust, I’ve just finished The Sweeney with John Thaw and it was brilliant uncut retro action. I also got the professionals remastered on blu ray which I am currently watching and again it’s uncut. This is something that you’ll never get on streaming as the woke brigade are constantly complaining about anything that doesn’t fit their narrative. Roll on springtime so I can start hitting the car boot sales for more goodies for my collection 👍
I have The Professionals on remastered DVD and they already look gorgeous for a show of such age. I'll be looking out for the Blu-ray version and will grab it at the right price.
For me it's the clutter - I don't feel comfortable having large collections around me. I used to collect vinyl / CDs / DVDs and video games. Now my place is mostly empty and minimalist. I find an external hard drive is enough for media purposes. I used to think, what happens when I die? Somebody is going to inherit a skip full of possessions. My best friend died this past September and he was somewhat of a hoarder, now his partner has no idea what to do with his clutter.
Great video 👍 I've started buying dvds and blu Ray's again because as you say, they might not have what you want to watch which is annoying in itself. I buy a lot of vhs also, I've never had so many 😅 physical media is always a winner for me, digital is soulless I find. We have steaming services mainly for our little girls, Disney plus for instance as its well worth the money how much they watch it
I buy DVD's for about $1 each and if I watch it and enjoyed the movie and see my myself rewatching it I try and find a used copy on Blu Ra or 4K and if I didn't like the film I donate it back to the shop I bought it from
I feel you on that sentiment about the algorithm… I bought a record or so of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who I didn't know about, until I bought her records and I found a person who was essential to the creation of Rock N Roll and beyond the popular artists that never get any recognition because they're NOT on the new mediums!! I have a record from 1944 of Red Foley on Decca Records singing "Smoke On The Water" and "There's A Blue Star Shining Bright(In A Window Tonight)"… but when I went to buy it on the Apple iTunes store I could get"Smoke On The Water" BUT I couldn't get the B side unless I had an account set to Ireland!! What the bloody heck!! 🤬🤬
@@JamesMurphyYT yeah I listened to an NPR piece about Sister Rosetta Tharpe and they said that she became more popular during the time Elvis Presley was popular in the UK(Sister Rosetta Tharpe was popular in the UK, not meaning Elvis) and was because when she was still in the US and tried to make a comeback, a lot of people in the US thought she was copying Elvis Presley's style when HE copied from her!! SMH… that's one reason why I don't like Elvis Presley… second reason why is because he didn't write ANY of his own songs!! He was more like Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby etc!! So I have more respect for her and others like Hank Williams(Sr.), Jimmie Rodgers, Bob Marley, Little Richard and MANY more ARTISTS that wrote more than 0-1% of their own songs… and to get back to movies and TV… Desilu (Desi Arnez and Lucille Ball), George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and others in that field!! 😉😉
I have them spread over a cupboard in my living room, on the floor by the telly and in my garage. At the moment, I'm making a concerted effort to condense them down, by doing away with the cases on single films and replacing them with wallets. A box that used to hold about 24 DVDs will now hold at least 75 if not more DVDs. I May do a video sowing the difference. THanks for watching!
With how things seem online. I'm surprise that every major movie company doesn't have their own streaming page. Watch it happen over time. But I bet they don't have ALL their movies available. Which once again, if the disc is on the shelf. Just grab it and throw it on.
i only buy dvd's for tv shows and i don't buy movies on bluray i know that are on 4K same with dvd if they are on bluray i don't buy the dvd. during lockdown i took all my dvd's and blurays and them in boxes of films i haven't watched yet that i've bought through the years there's quite a lot i have not watched yet. i did that because my plan was to watch them and than put them back on my shelf and if i found one i bought that is really bad i'll trade it in. i've been on the shelf at least over 50 i'm guessing ? if not more? and i still have a shit ton i have not watched yet. i will never stop buying physical media and in fact on Monday i bought season 2 of Stargate Atlantis on bluray for $7.99!
If I buy physical copies, I own those and am not dependent on the streaming services keeping my shows in their programme. The only downside is the space they take up.
Never did streaming except these short videos on YT. My DVDs, CDs and vinyl are here to stay. Many rare and obscure films are not available on streaming channels but only thru collectors and traders. One never know what will be pulled from their lists due to political correctness or alleged racism. It also gets old seeing these articles saying what people should get rid of and CDs and DVDs always seem to be on such lists. It's nice having no streaming or cable bills or watching edited films or old TV programs. Physical media isn't going anywhere. About 15 years ago I got rid of the cases and put my DVDs (& music CDs) into 5 x 5 sleeves and thus no problems with storage as that eliminated about 90% of the space needed.
My brother is becoming annoying - for the past few years he's been gloating about the content on Netflix & Disney+ and mocking my oldschool DVD collection. Recently though, he's been turning up asking if he can borrow TV box sets like SHAMELESS and LIFE ON MARS - apparently his streaming services only have the US edits, which have a good 10 minutes clipped away. Next time he turns up I'm charging him a rental fee. 😡
i'm a HUGE movie geek as i call myself and so there have been more than once i have been on Netflix and i do a search for Christopher lee and not a single film of his is on there. and he did over 200 of them what' that tell you? yet if i wanted to watch certain ones i own i can just go to my shelf.
Tell him no! Brother or not, my family doesn't get to borrow my films and TV... because they NEVER come back, or they're damaged, scratched because they don't look after them.
@@ApolloT-vp5dn He always returns them in good condition, but it is still annoying. On the other hand, he does me plenty of favours so it would seem a bit off to refuse.
I'm from the US and I decided to go back to DVDs and start collecting them because what's the point and also some stuff is stuff I don't care about or something that's political that I don't care about seeing so that's why and another thing if there's a movie that i really like to watch and I look for it's either not there and gone somewhere else that involves money like a streaming service or gone away completely or change the stuff in it so my generation can zip it and it sucks and also I would rather have my own collection of stuff that I like instead of what everyone else likes that's the good thing about physical media
I can understand what you're saying. I couldn't find anything that I wanted to see in the end and that's why we ended up going back to our DVDs. Because of the DVDs were never lacking something to watch that we like.
If I could go to Netflix and type in any film (even if just the ones >10 years old) and it would be there, I wouldn't need to buy physical. Let's say I have a burning desire to watch the 1960s "Mission Impossible" or "Lost in Space" TV series. Nope not there.
I was spending around £60 per month on various streaming services. I stopped cold turkey and have moved back to buying DVD's, Bluerays etc. Just picked up the complete Columbo DVD collection at less than £30. Bargain.
Enjoyable telly!

That's unfair.
For some, they prefer streaming services.
My one good friend loves movies, but hates collecting.
You aren't a superior human for hoarding boxes of media.
4 reasons to buy DVDs/Blu rays over digital copies:
3. You get more bonus features
4. You can sell the film if you don't like it
Agree with all of that - thanks for commenting
And most burglars won't bother with CDs and DVDs since the proceeds will be very small.
I'm with you on that
Right on. Besides the more recent stuff I also like silent films, early sound and some cult classics that were originally a flop in the theaters and you won't find that stuff on streaming channels. Even Turner Classic Movies has scaled back on the older films, sad but true.
Oh yeah, censorship is another issue.... True...

I'd happily pay to see them again
@@patrickmartin4996

We should also keep supporting HMV and Zavvi etc to keep new releases coming as well. It is also nice to get remastered versions of our favourite films in steelbook or box set versions. Preaching to the choir my friend! I love physical media. I'm slowly cancelling my streaming services, and buying more, More, MORE DVD's!
Sounds like a good plan!
Ridiculous.
yep i'm always told streaming is so much cheaper than buying the dvd or bluray etc.. maybe at one time yes but not really anymore in my opinion. if you buy movies every week and spend hundreds of dollars/pounds wherever you happen to live than yes it is cheaper but if you don't... i can see if you have a small out or apartment or Flat
but most people are just to lazy to do anything anymore. best buys i think is stopping selling it cause Amazon is taking their business.

@@Anonymous-wb3nz I have no intention ofselling
I just found your channel and I whole heartedly agree. TV shows and movies are traded between streaming platforms so what you watch could just vanish behind another platform you have zero intention of subscribing too. That and also its just really pricey long term.
I'm currently not subscribed to any platform. I got a bunch of dvds and vhs tapes and after this video I might go get more.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts
The thing is, as long as you're happy, that's all that matters. Thanks for sharing your thoughts

I was really surprised that I enjoyed Anne of Green Gables!
@@JamesMurphyYT it was one of my favourite books when I was young. There are many versions on video, but the best, in my opinion is the one with Megan Follows. All of the caters in that one just seem perfect for the parts.
flashpoint, 19-2 and Rookie blue are great canadian tv shows. 2 are on Netflix but could be pulled anytime
This is what I've been trying to say to people for years. Thanks for "speaking" for me James and hopefully your video will help people continue to catch on.
Thanks for your support!
I love dvds. I'm into children’s tv programmes. A lot of children’s tv producers relied on the sales of DVDs to help fund their next programme. But with the decline in sale's alot of the companies have gone bust.
That's a shame.
Nicely put. Thanks for sharing

Been there done that!
I still buy Blu rays & dvds. Im not a fan of streaming. I always preferred physical media and still think its the best.

The TV show Scrubs has had significant portions of its soundtrack changed by streaming services due to licensing issues. In addition, three episodes have been permanently removed due to certain jokes being taboo. That's a good reason to physically own the DVD's of that show.
I loved scrubs. Sadly I've only got the first 2 series on DVD
This is true!

But I see them only increasing over time, and they will increase for sure!!
They're quite reasonable at the minute so nows the time to buy.

There is nothing wrong with streaming from sites like youtube, or other free sites were you can pick what to watch to mix something new in.
it is better to watch some thing you like at the time YOU want to watch it, TV does not let you do that. so why pay a TV licence to the BBC that prevents you from watching tv channels that use adverts to make there living.

I would have never seen these extras if I didn't own the physical media. Before getting this Rocky Collection, I didn't want to watch Rocky because the fight scenes were too long and kind of pointless in the end. Rocky was a great series because of who Rocky was as a person, and not what he did in the ring.

That's what I've been doing for years. It's legal in Australia. I don't know about other countries, though.
I watched this with the sound down and it looked like you were conducting an orchestra
Yeah...I'm a bit demonstrative!
@@JamesMurphyYT 😆
I have "accepted" the streaming platforms. What I don't want, is the streaming of live sports, which I'm afraid is coming. Well, of American football that is. Well done, James 🎉
The streaming platforms are here to stay. I prefer to watch sport by being there than on TV to be honest.
I don't subscribe to any of the sport services in the UK.
It's not thw same.as being there.
Thanks Darin!
The thing is, your casual movie watcher isn’t looking to collect movies. They are just looking to watch movies once and be done with it.
That's quite true. And that's why streaming has won
I agree with you about buying DVDs and Blu Rays. Though, I often can't buy them. Many shows that I like either are expensive or not available at all. Also, I don't have much physical space.
I tend to prefer to do what I used to during the time of Napster and Emule.
I think we all have to do what's right for us.my opinions are just that.

I've got The Sweeney too. Classic British drama.
I have The Professionals on remastered DVD and they already look gorgeous for a show of such age.
I'll be looking out for the Blu-ray version and will grab it at the right price.
@@dazjackson1972 I've got The Professionals too. Bought the DVD in early 2000s
At the end of the day, what you do for you is all that matters. Thanks for sharing your thoughts
Great video 👍 I've started buying dvds and blu Ray's again because as you say, they might not have what you want to watch which is annoying in itself.
I buy a lot of vhs also, I've never had so many 😅 physical media is always a winner for me, digital is soulless I find.
We have steaming services mainly for our little girls, Disney plus for instance as its well worth the money how much they watch it
It's important to do what works for you. Thanks for sharing
@@JamesMurphyYT that's it, completely agree 😊 thanks for your channel, I've just found it tonight, subscribed and enabled notifications 👍
Thank you. It's much appreciated!@@adamwragg4606
I buy DVD's for about $1 each and if I watch it and enjoyed the movie and see my myself rewatching it I try and find a used copy on Blu Ra or 4K and if I didn't like the film I donate it back to the shop I bought it from
That's what we do. If you hand it back, it gives someone else the opportunity of a bargain as well as helping the a Charity shop out
Good channel and great points. Love dvds. And not a fan of streaming.
Thanks for watching
That sounds about right.
Funnily enough I watched a programme about Elvis Presley recently, and they showed footage of her on it
@@JamesMurphyYT yeah I listened to an NPR piece about Sister Rosetta Tharpe and they said that she became more popular during the time Elvis Presley was popular in the UK(Sister Rosetta Tharpe was popular in the UK, not meaning Elvis) and was because when she was still in the US and tried to make a comeback, a lot of people in the US thought she was copying Elvis Presley's style when HE copied from her!! 😉😉
@jescis0 thanks for adding!
But where do you store them, i have so many dvds and cds i dont know what to put them, any ideas?
I have them spread over a cupboard in my living room, on the floor by the telly and in my garage.
At the moment, I'm making a concerted effort to condense them down, by doing away with the cases on single films and replacing them with wallets. A box that used to hold about 24 DVDs will now hold at least 75 if not more DVDs.
I May do a video sowing the difference.
THanks for watching!
Thanks
Yes indeed. And books😊
We've got 3 bookcases full of books. Love them too
With how things seem online. I'm surprise that every major movie company doesn't have their own streaming page. Watch it happen over time. But I bet they don't have ALL their movies available. Which once again, if the disc is on the shelf. Just grab it and throw it on.
Absolutely
i only buy dvd's for tv shows and i don't buy movies on bluray i know that are on 4K same with dvd if they are on bluray i don't buy the dvd. during lockdown i took all my dvd's and blurays and them in boxes of films i haven't watched yet that i've bought through the years there's quite a lot i have not watched yet. i did that because my plan was to watch them and than put them back on my shelf and if i found one i bought that is really bad i'll trade it in. i've been on the shelf at least over 50 i'm guessing ? if not more? and i still have a shit ton i have not watched yet. i will never stop buying physical media and in fact on Monday i bought season 2 of Stargate Atlantis on bluray for $7.99!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts
I have a massive Blu Ray and 4K Blu Ray collection in my apartment. I prefer owning my favorite films instead of relying on streaming. Lol
Thanks for sharing your thoughts
I have 3000 to 5000 DVDs blu rays and now some 4k discs
Wow! That's way bigger than my collection. That's a proper collection.
I'll admit that I've bought a few older movies on DVD just for the behind the scenes stuff, Blurays don't keep the extra goodies!
Thanks for commenting.
If I buy physical copies, I own those and am not dependent on the streaming services keeping my shows in their programme.
The only downside is the space they take up.
I am condensing my dvds down by transferring them to an envelope. A box that used to hold 25 now holds 100
i like it and i ask you about ornella muti i like her movies i want to buy from you if you have
You asked me yesterday. I said no then too.
I just bought Armageddon on Blu-ray for £4. And it will never be edited or watered down.
Bargain!
I’m curious, you seem to prefer dvd over blu ray, any reason?
It's not that I prefer it, I already have around 800 boxsets an movies on DVD
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I like your style!
i'm a HUGE movie geek as i call myself and so there have been more than once i have been on Netflix and i do a search for Christopher lee and not a single film of his is on there. and he did over 200 of them what' that tell you?
yet if i wanted to watch certain ones i own i can just go to my shelf.
Tell him no!
Brother or not, my family doesn't get to borrow my films and TV... because they NEVER come back, or they're damaged, scratched because they don't look after them.
@@ApolloT-vp5dn on that I can't say I blame you but I wonder how his brother would treat his things?
I agree with you 100% 🙂👍

I'm still buying!
The biggest downside with physical media is wall space been collecting for years :)

And now i have urge to watch Play dirty (1969) with Michael Cane and i know that is on top shelf :-)
One of my favourite Micahel Cain films is 'Without A Clue.'
Thanks for commenting.
Darn straight, I still have most of the early south park boxsets, uncensored and untouched by big corporations!
And you can play them whenever you want!
If I could go to Netflix and type in any film (even if just the ones >10 years old) and it would be there, I wouldn't need to buy physical.
Let's say I have a burning desire to watch the 1960s "Mission Impossible" or "Lost in Space" TV series. Nope not there.
I would imagine they'll only be on DVD.
