I love DVDs, no matter what people say they will never be obsolete. The price is just right for most people like me who just want to OWN a copy of the films they love. People forget that the point of collecting physical media is to OWN them and watch them at your terms. Keep collecting mate!
I still own DVD's and HD DVD disks because they come with the original uncut and alternate versions of the movie, plus a lot of cult classic DVD movies are still unavailable on bluray and streaming services so this is the main reason why I still own DVD's. Great video.
Here is the sad reality. A lot of the old movies are being censored on streaming platforms. They literally cut scenes they have deemed not up 2024 standards. Wokeness is killing all media and movies. I will keep my collection.
Wokeness is a made up term, its meant to divide us, don't let it, its not people making these changes to appeal to "woke" its just companies wanting money and they think being "inclusive" and "non violent" and such will make more, okay? Stop believing the media, its dividing us
Some time ago I watched a DVD movie with my friend's bluray player, and the video quality was so much better that way, when nothing limits it. DVD players with scart connector were the reason to somewhat bad video quality. Nothing wrong with DVD's, there is absolutely no need for that extra quality, the movie is what matters. Bad movie is bad, no matter how big the resolution is. I have a lot of DVD's and I have no Blurays and I never use netflix or similar things.
Upscaling is much better these days. My DVDs looks great on my crt widescreen tv through SCART but also look really good through an upscaling player into a hd tv. Not Blu ray quality but a lot better than they did through an upscaling player from 10 years ago.
I've just started collecting again after years of streaming and I can totally get on board with this. I have bought about 500 in a month, charity shops are a GREAT way of keeping the cost down.
I wouldn't get rid of your DVDs yet. There are still a few DVDs with special features, extended cuts and correct color timing that Blu-ray/4K radically changed; and many of those features and cuts have never been carried over.
My main reason I buy dvds still is because of everything getting censored on streaming sites. So I like to try and get full uncut version. I also back up my collect onto a hard drive so I have a digital copy.
I am a huge advocate for having a physical Media collection, even if its a movie you'll only watch once or twice. So many great titles are at thrift stores (we call them that in the us lol) and even Blu Rays. Specifically for tv shows, it is sooo worth it to just buy it instead of subscribing to a service especially the rights always being so finicky. Breaking Bad for instance is getting taken off Netflix in 2025, so I bought it all on blu ray and Better call saul, because they were the 2 shows I only cared about loosing and I unsubscribed. Now I can watch if the Internet goes out and I don't have to worry about any episode getting removed or any ads! Not to mention, if a favorite movie gets taken of streaming, ill always have it. Great video!!! Greetings from America!
Same here, unless the DVD was mastered terribly it can upscale well and these days who can resist a bargain but mainly I try to scoop up Blu-Rays unloaded by people who moved on to 4K.
I think this prices are not gonna last more than 3 or 4 years. I live in Mexico and I got recently 12 DVD movies for half a dollar each. And people is beggining to look movies for resale and makes it harder to find good titles, sometimes they left because they are non dubled versions. Concerts are most difficult to find in Mexico mainly for music market wich it has more demand.
Physical media > streaming, any day of the week. Whether it's DVD, Blu-Ray, 4K or even VHS, I will always favor owning movies and TV show season sets over streaming them.
Let me ask you this though I get it. It makes sense to own a physical copy but what size TV are you using for a DVD? I tried watching a DVD recently on my 65 inch 4K TV and the quality was absolutely terrible. I expected it to be at least on par with streaming, I can’t see myself streaming for a physical copy that looks terrible on TV now my Blu-ray and 4K. This look absolutely incredible that I definitely see the point.
I still have and watch dvds they are not obsolete but most movies if available Id rather watch on bluray or 4k. But Dvd is still fine in my opinion for many TV shows or certain movies like Comedys where High quality visuals are just not necessary. But I rarely buy Dvds now but still do.
We think alike. I favor the form factor of some DVD releases over the incremental improvement in picture quality in upgrading to blu ray. I will never give up my Special Edition of Master and Commander with Russell Crowe.
As a serious movie collector, I gave up on the DVD format a couple years ago. (unless there is no blu-ray release). For me, there were 2 reasons...mainly. #1 Durability. Compared to blu-ray, DVD's are like handling fine China. #2 Fidelity. As I own a 4K TV (and are a bit of a quality nerd) I don't even like streaming 4K content, as the video and audio are sub-UHD quality. Bottom line, If I'm going to waste 2 hours in front of the 'boob tube', I'm going to make it as worth my while as possible.
Oh I get you totally , I have many bluray movies that I just don't want to watch on dvd , back to the future , aliens , terminator b, predator , ect , I just think some movies are just fine on dvd , i have a western called open range on dvd and to thisb day i think the picture quality is just amazing
Quality and sound matters especially if you have a decent setup. There’s a huge difference between dvd & blu ray. Only time I ever buy DVDs is that they don’t have it on blu ray or 4ks.
Good arguments for both. Personally I have no issue using DVD, Blu-Ray or streaming. All my favourites I have on all major formats. But if I saw a DVD for 10p, I’d pick it up as well!
I personally keep to BR mainly as it helps me maintain a smaller collection. Often times the shop near me either have very few BR or they are a bit overpriced for being used. On the other hand there are so many DvDs that I would drown in them and run out of room. I already have quite a few BR that I have yet to watch so I don't need anymore. I also only own one 4K disc because I found it for $5 and it also included the BR. Funny enough I don't even own a 4k player so I can only watch the BR. I do however buy stuff on DvD if that's the only format available and I really want to own it. And I am looking to buy some 4ks of my favorite films in the future but again I don't even have a player right now so thats a future endeavor. Also since there are so many DvDs at the shops it would take a long time to sift through them all and look up films to see if they are worth picking them up, so it helps me waste a bit less time in the shop. Also also DvD is more likely to be damaged as it is less resilient than BR and a lot of DvDs were often handled by kids.
Absolute useful! It is easy to rip them and have accsess to the Movies everywhere! I am not buying as much, as i am not the big Movie Watcher, but i what i buy i want to store somewhere digitally.
if you want to keep your dvd for a very long time you will need to keep your disc in a vaccum chamber with no exposure to any form of particles that accelerate the Plastic rot that some cheaper made disc are prone to. while it is much easier to keep the movies for longer period by having it stored on a much more reliable medium that can stand up the test of time. the cheapest solution is to rip all your movies and simply write them on brand new high quality material Dvd. the industry, when having to manufacture millions of copies of each movies, will cut corners and sometimes use the cheapest of manufacture process. high quality material Disc, can last for 100 years without Disc rot, Theoricaly.
I don't collect movies, as I hardly watch them these days. I literally have one DVD (Battlestar Galactica: Razor) I sold most of them years ago. The reason is once i've watched them I hardly ever rewatch them. Maybe something like Lord of the Rings or Blade Runner, but it'll be years between watching and rewatching.
I've never bothered with Blu-rays even though they have better special features, but I have thousands of DVDs. Right now I'm actually watching the old TV series The Pretender on DVD. I really prefer to own physical media. Whenever I go to my local public library which has a good-sized DVD and Blu-ray collection I'm always checking out DVDs. As long as DVDs exist I'm going to be a consumer of them.
Well if they are (obsolete) I have no idea how I ordered the boxset of Ugly Betty on ebay this week. 24 hour turnaround.. Already halfway through season 1. Until the actual players are no longer available I'm sure DVD's will be around. And if vinyl is anything to go by, there's a few years in them yet.
Even though the DVD format is laughed at by collectors these days because it no longer meets today's standards, I still think that this format has several advantages, starting with the original Star Wars trilogy; the special edition from 2006 contains the unedited theatrical version as a bonus, even if the quality isn't the best, as long as it's watchable I'm happy. Many would probably say that you only watch these versions because of nostalgia and yes, I often watch films that I grew up with and try to get the films as I knew them, the quality is not that important to me, these films have made me who I am today, also as far as my passion for films is concerned, I think the Blu-ray, for example, is great as an update to my all-time favorite, but I don't think the 4K is right because a lot of things are too sharp for me and there are other problems that I don't like about the format, James Cameron also plays a role, which is just my personal taste. I don't see myself as part of the physical media community on UA-cam but rather as someone who has always liked films and likes to have them in their collection, whether it's VHS, DVD or BLURAY, everything has its right to exist without telling anyone else that your way of collecting is wrong.
Today’s generation will never see old movies on Netflix or other streaming services cause of copyright ownership. I still have my dvd player collection cause I watch anime that isn’t available on all platforms do to anime’s being in Japanese so i bought the the English version of animes on dvds.
Movies that are classics and unavailable on Blu Ray or the transfer is trash, I will get the DVD but Blu Ray and 4k looks so much better I rather that any day over DVD.
