I love rewatching the old shows on DVD because the humor from the old days is what makes me laugh. Modern humor doesn't appeal to me. And the characters are like old friends who I understand and who entertain me.
@@JamesMurphyYT Yes, modern humor is much more snide, self-centered and cynical. It leaves me cold. Older humor was a lot looser, seemed friendlier, poked fun with our cultural differences and had a rhythm and timing that came out of Vaudeville. It also had a lot more character comedy with accents, etc.
I'm a Gen Xer born in 1971, and I'm finding myself doing this more and more. Even just going back as recent as the 90s reminds me of a simpler time, before the world got complicated. One of my favourite things to do on YT, though, is to go back and watch old TV commercials from the 70s and 80s to give me a better flavor of how things were when I was growing up. Its like dusting off an old photo album and looking at the photos you haven't seen in a long time
Old adverts from the 70s were sometimes more entertaining than the programmes. When I watch old shows it feels like thy come from a more innocent time, so I get what you mean. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I think it's funny whenever someone accuses me of "seeing the past through rose tinted lenses", whilst it's true that in hindsight we can see the flaws within society that ultimately led to where we are now, I'd still go back to the 2000s if I could because despite knowing the nuances I'd still prefer living then over now because I know from my experience that it was better and some of my reflection sessons has reinforced it, honestly I wish I got to experience that time as an older millennial or a gen x adult instead of as a zoomer kid (I wish I had memories of that brief period of the 90s that I was around during).
I love watching I love Lucy , the andy griffith show, little house on the prairie, the facts of life , different strokes , the jeffersons , all in the family , good times , sanford and son and more
I loved them. I used to call my Mum and Dad that. I can't work out that her next door neighbour had married Chrissie in Mad about the House! Thanks for sharing!
Some of the TV shows I revisit often are Seinfeld, Tales from the Darkside, Twilight Zone (original and 80's versions), Golden Girls, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Fringe. They are comforting and just really good shows. I find most newer shows lack the charm for older shows
I can remember back in the 70's as a youngster watching programmes like The Sweeney, Starsky & Hutch, The Professionals etc, and at that age it was all about the action, the car chases, the goodies and baddies. But revisiting these series after buying the DVD box sets, through adult eyes, I am amazed just how good the stories actually were.
I remember being at the library and seeing the first season of 24 there. I had heard about, but never watched it. I boorrowed it, got home and checked it out. I ended up staying up all night binging the whole season over a weekend. I was hooked! Every episode was a cliffhanger. I then decided to buy all the seasons available at that point. Most of what i collect on dvd are older tv show and movies i grew up with. I was a generally rare teen in the 80s that loved old black and white comedy teams and movies. Ive also been collecting older tv shows and cartoon series so i can recreate the experience of my younger days. Maybe a weekend of Francis the Talking Mule, Abbot and Costello, Gi Joe cartoons,, I enjoy things more these days on a more 'innocent' level, as most modern shows and movies dont interest me, for many reasons, including being downright disturbing. But thats me. There is so much available today, and there was a time i never thought id be able to again watch all my old favorites. Great video as always. Fun to talk about these things.
I think we think the same and more and more people are saying the same thing. I bought the complete 24 series for £9 from a charity shop a few years back as I hadn't seen it first time around. Every episode leaves me shattered! Thansk for sharing your thoughts.
Attention span is another factor. Modern TV shows have an average scene length of 3 seconds - young people of today would quickly become bored with the pace of older programmes. They are victims of the cult of instant gratification
I used to think it wasn't necessary to re-watch a tv series or movie that I already had seen, but it is true that re-watching something like that in a different time in your life is often a different experience. I'm currently watching Lois and Clark (Superman, with Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher) from the 90s that I used to watch as a kid.
I’m 57 and enjoy travelling back in time with old original TV shows, it takes me back to my childhood, my roots, reminds me of my parents, school friends, playground chat and the topics that were being featured in news bulletins…Love thy neighbour is one of my favourites…to be honest I reckon my generation was spoiled for choice when trying to find top quality entertainment on the TV and it’s definitely worthwhile revisiting some of the content that was created during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s…thanks for making time to create interesting material to intellectually stimulate ‘Grumpy Old Gits’ like me..! lol😇
I'm very near in age. You really hit spot on the feelings I share about watching all these gems of the past. We are lucky today to have them available to revisit old friends.
During COVID 2020 lockdown I found I started rewatching most of the TV series I did from childhood, 1967. I started keeping a simple spreadsheet with the years across the columns and in the rows, color filled each series from the start year to the end year. Each color has no meaning, only to keep the titles easily apart. I still maintain this now. What I discovered after entering about a hundred, was that most of the stuff I was watching was was made in the 60's and 70's. Mostly fantasy series were being entered with an occasional drama. Since 2020, this has become a habit to come home after work and dive right into those series that I have collected. COVID was an opportunity to slow life down. I was one of the lucky one that still had a job during that time. Now it seems I use these series to "slow" my life down as it was in 2020. Thank you for this video. Now I want to binge watch your content!
I always watched older material from the time that I was a kid. Growing up in the late 70's, almost all of the shows that we watched were old. We watched Gilligan's Island, The Flintstones, Star Trek, Twilight Zone, Thriller, F-Troop, Green Acres, You Bet Your Life, The Honeymooners, Lucy, Night Gallery, It Takes A Thief, Beverly Hillbillies, etc. Those shows were much better than the modern ones. So today, I don't watch much tv, but I tend to watch mostly shows from the 1950's through to the early 1980's.
One of the perks of having a boomer mum as a zoomer is that I'm one of the few zoomers familiar with The Flintsones, Gilligan's Island, The Twilight Zone, and The Time Tunnel, Lost In Space etc. It makes me wonder what other cool shows are out there that I missed out on, I bet there's stuff from America that even my mum couldn't see here in Australia.
I love watching old episodes of Only Fools and Horses, Goodnight Sweetheart and On The Buses! I also love listening to and collecting Queen and Beatles records. I also love watching your videos as I get a lot of comfort from them. You’re like a member of the family! Take care!
The BBC are committed to recording over all of the Master Tapes for those shows, in order to save money and re-record episodes of Saturday Morning Kitchen over them.
I recently got the first episodes of Emmerdale from 1972 (my birth year) on DVD. Very interesting, as I'm also a Yorkshireman. Also have the classic era Doctor Who on DVD or Blu-ray - BBC do a good job with those releases, adding great bonus content.
During 2020, I started watching UFO, Thunderbirds. Now I have an obsession of watching all things Gerry Anderson. I think Fireball XL5 is my most rewatched. I won't go on TOO much about how much I LOVE classic Doctor Who. That series has alway been a part of me since about 1985. But I have memories of 1972/73 watching Jon Pertwee on PSB... one episode at a time.
Watch Bullseye on Challenge most nights. Reason? Happy smiling faces both in the audience and contestants. Jim Bowen making us all laugh with his comments. Usual occupations as opposed to "managers" who people proclaim to be in game shows these days. Women were happy smiling folk not wanna be hard nuts with tattoos and fake everything from tans to nails. It's like a window to how life used to be. A jolly sight happier than that of today.
@@JamesMurphyYT they were a lot more content. Genuinely pleased if they won a speedy boat but lived in a high rise flat in Coventry! Were able to laugh at each other too. I heard they were going to bring back Bullseye (again!) but for the life of me I couldn't think of anyone who could host it properly. There is no one alive left.... look at the hosts we've lost... Bob Monkhouse Les Dawson Bruce Forsyth Ted Rogers Terry Wogan Even Paul Daniels was a laugh. Jim Davidson would be good but he doesn't tick any boxes.... And Bradley Walsh does everything... he's about knackered!
Box sets: The Two Ronnies, Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, It Ain't Half Hot Mum, The Good Life, Spitting Image, Tales of the Unexpected, Mission Impossible, The Universe, The Outer Limits, The Twilight Zone, Mythbusters, Fawlty Towers, Dad's Army, Hale and Pace, The Fast Show, 'Allo, Allo, hundreds of movies, and lots more besides. I don't need a TV licence when I've got all this and more to watch whenever I want to. And no flippin' adverts.
I've just discovered your channel, so I'm catching up watching one a day. I tend to binge watch shows (on DVD) more so in the winter months. Old TV programs are like old carpet slippers. 😀
Callan! Now that takes me back. I also enjoyed Edward Woodward in The Equaliser. I bought the Emma Peel episodes of The Avengers as she was my first crush as a kid. The Prisoner still confuses me! Thanks for sharing!
A series back in the 70s/80s could be serious, compelling and comedic, all the core elements of drama. Hard to find in current TV especially in America.
I sometimes watch reruns of the TV show "Barney Miller." The same issues the world is dealing with today such as homelessness, gay rights, equal employment rights, gentrification, vigilantism, war, corporate irresponsibility, were also occurring in the mid-1970s and early 1980s.
I have a huge collection of old shows and yes, familiarity is a huge part of the appeal. Its a shelf of old friends. For me though, its not just that, its the fact that many new programmes are constantly trying to shock us. I get tired of this, i just want entertainment. Sure i dont mind being challenged occasionally, but not in every damn show.
It's a huge thing for us, being entertained. I like the comfortable feel of a comedy-drama from way back when. I don't need to have edgy drama all the time. Thanks for commenting.
Excellent and good-humored video. Just started rewatching the great 'Babylon 5', here, for the first tine in many years and while the SFX may have dated a little, the excellence of the actors, the positivity and spirit at the heart of the scripts and the evident good humor present, are already making it a real treat! 'Inspector Morse', 'Harry O', 'Sapphire and Steel', and 'Blake's 7', all coming soon😁!
@@JamesMurphyYT Thank you for your kind acknowledgement👍! 'Inspector Morse' set a truly high benchmark, quality wise, for UK TV drama (and, indeed, global TV drama in general): superb performances from the late-John Thaw, Kevin Whateley and other cast regulars, immensely talented guest actors/actresses, well written scripts, great direction and that ever present, beautiful Oxford architecture and scenery in the background. Barrington Pheloung's 'Morse' main theme and his other incidental series music, simply added the cherry atop an already 'A+' grade cake🍰😁!!! Thank you for the 'Lewis' recommendation, too. I have actually never got around to watching it, but following your and several friends' recommendations, I shall definitely be adding it to my 'Must Watch Later' list, here😁! I really enjoy your channel and look forward to watching many more of your videos, here, during the coming months. Have a really great week, out there👍!
@@brazil-y2y Yes, I know exactly what you mean, here🎯! I really loved the series when it first aired all those years ago and have periodically revisited it since, but in fits and starts and rather selectively. However, until now, I have never actually sat down to watch it properly, all the way through (seasons 1-5), during the intervening years since its' initial airing. I started to put that right over the weekend, though, by working my way through the first three S1 episodes😁! Definitely looking forward to reacquainting myself with all of the regular and guest B5 characters again, in the coming weeks and months😁! Did you also enjoy 'Crusade' and if you do not mind me asking, what are your views on the possible 'Babylon 5' reboot idea that B5 creator, J Michael Straczynski seems very emotionally invested in? There certainly seem to be many arguments for and against this idea, out there, don't there? Thank you for adding your comments, here. Have a really good day out there in the YT-verse👍!
Yep me with seinfeld, Impractical jokers, and friends, and that 70s show. It's about comfort, nostalgia, and being able to think wow I'm getting old I remember watching most of these when I was 14, and 15 now I'm almost 30......
For me, I like watching "old" shows from around 2005 as that's when I was around 7ish years old. Everything felt so much better back then. Of course I have nostalgia, but it's also nice to try to dig up old memories and try to get a bigger picture of my past. There's a certain charm to finally knowing how old you were when you saw something or did something. And watching those shows again with a developed mind is akin to getting a 4K remaster of your own memories. And to be honest, nothing today seems to meet the quality of those older shows as well.
When I find a TV show I love, I watch it multiple times. Then I introduce it to people in my household getting just as much pleasure watching their reactions. Now that I've bored everyone in my household with just about every TV show I've ever enjoyed, I've started watching reaction videos on UA-cam.
I have to say I miss the Shake & Vac, Cinzano and Smash ads! They were enjoyable. I've even found myself watching ad compilations on UA-cam. Thanks for commenting.
There are certain TV shows that I watch every so often, because I like the characters - things like Aufwiedersehen Pet, Porridge, Sharpe & The Wire spring to mind. Like you, I also enjoy seeing shows I missed first time around - recently watched Upstairs, Downstairs & currently watching Fallen Hero (1978) starring Del Henney. Exploration of character and social themes were done better in the 70s to 90s I feel. Too much melodrama in many modern shows. New shows can be great too - The Expanse was excellent 👍
I loved all those series. They really don't make too many shows like them. I haven't had chance to watch the wire yet. We bought it recently Thanks for sharing
Love your channel mate! I have always loved watching Prisoner: Cell Block H. I too find it a real comfort to watch it over and over down the years. I like to leave a couple of years between rewatching it and I find I forget parts of the story and enjoy it all over again. I genuinely enjoy it so much that no other shows come close. I love collecting DVDs 📀 and Blu Rays 📀 to curate my own collection.
Years before, there was a programme called Within These Walls, which was also a women's prison, but it was always funny when the walls moved when someone closed a door! Thanks for commenting.
My online media only comes from UA-cam, I will watch clips of mainstream media on there amd watch TV box sets either on DVD or Old Torrent download s that come before streaming services where a thing.
The quality as well is another reason to rewatch some of the older shows. Some of the new shows visually are stunning and impressive, but not as well written or well conceived. Thanks for the video.
I tend to buy series on dvd that I missed back in the day, sometimes after coming across discs in the library. I discovered Clatterford (Jam and Jerusalem) that way. Have watched it through twice so far. Sweet show, and Sue Johnston is a delight. Last year I bought the complete Murder, She Wrote, which I had skipped in the 80s-90s. Didn’t like Angela Lansbury then; enjoy her now. I also pick up discs online from Hamilton Books - most recently Detectorists, which I’d never heard of, and Picket Fences, which I sort of knew of but somehow had never seen. Enjoy both very much. MeTV (digital broadcast) is also great for revisiting old shows. Currently watching detective shows Mannix, Cannon, and Barnaby Jones, which I probably saw bc my parents watched them. Definitely a nostalgia element with the latter, but the fact is, they’re just ridiculously entertaining.
When I was about nine years old, I used to love Bewitched. I have some now on DVD. Amazing to see them again, in colour. The world was a very different place then. More recently, I loved Seinfeld and would like to see them again. I remember the Duchess of Duke Street, and like you I wasn't very interested in it then. I think that now (at 68) I am about ready for it.
Surprisingly, the Duchess was really good. I really enjoyed Seinfeld and if I come across the DVDs I'll definitely buy them. I loved Bewitched when I was growing up too.
Absolutely agree with you. I love watching old programs & films sitcoms from the 70s & 80s in particular. Plus a lot of stuff that may not be shown on tv now. Such as In Sickness and in Health.l, Hancocks half hour etc. great fun!
I get exactly what you mean! I've started to collect all the old series I love again so I can re-watch them too. There's so much choice on services like Netflix etc but I would find myself just scrolling through for ages because nothing takes my fancy. Whereas watching old series is just like spending time with an old friend. Keep up the great work with your videos mate, always excited to see them!
Love the channel and you make me want to rewatch something old and familiar. Most recent television isn’t much of an escape and it’s fun to watch things from a simpler time.
I've just finished Series 1 and am about to start series 2. I have a friend who appeared in an episode with Don Johnson, so I'm waiting to see that one. I bought the complete series during the lockdown for £5! Thanks for staring.
@@JamesMurphyYTa bargain james. I've just finished series 2. I'm also watching last of the summer wine complete series dvd i think its going to take some time theres 30 series i think. Im on series 5.
I wasn't overly interested in the first couple of series of Last of The Summer wine. It took a while to find its groove with me but then it got great.@@garyrobinson8665
@@JamesMurphyYT yeah i agree its starting to get good now in series 5. The early stuff is pretty cringe at times. I still like it. Again its a childhood favourite.
Very relatable video, I find myself doing something similar with old games that didn't interest me as a kid, for instance I recently acquired the PS3 Spider-Man 3 game that didn't interest me at all when it came out.
@@JamesMurphyYTI think that it comes from the realization that if you want to experience the type of experiences with entertainment that you had in the past, the best way is to explore things made during that era when things closer to your preferences were in fashion, since it's self evidently not something we're getting from most modern media. I think it's different from conventional nostalgia because even though the stuff we're collecting is old it's still motivated by the desire for a new experience rather than reliving an old one, it's more of a nostalgia for a style than a nostalgia for a specific memory, because you're not going to be nostalgic for something you have no formative memories of. Aside from the properties being ones you never seen before, you're not going to have the same experience of having watched it in your youth/childhood with certain relatives and friends that were around at the time but aren't in the picture anymore, or get the same emotions that you would've gotten as a kid, for instance most horror films I didn't get to watch as a kid I enjoy but I'm not scared like I would've been if I saw them back then.
Box sets have really changed how we watch stuff. The modern generation wouldn't believe me if I told them back in the day a six-part story in Doctor Who required an investment of a month and a half of your life !
YES, for 2 decades now, going on 3. The facts of life, Quantum leap, Punky Brewster, Eight is enough, Family ties, I love Lucy, The X files, Daria, Married with children, King of the hill, Clarissa explains it all, and now Square pegs. And the thing is....I didn't grow up with Eight is enough, Square pegs, or Punky Brewster. Very few "modern shows" I actually watch....Dexter, Rick and Morty, Cobra Kai, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, It's always sunny....what else? That's pretty much it. Granted, I aint ever going back and re watching Cobra Kai and I stopped watching after season 2. After season 2 I just skimmed through season 3. But Dexter, I've rewatched seasons, totally out of order last year and 2 months ago. I also like to celebrate holidays with movies and TV shows. So I watch a lot of holiday specials, 99% of them old school. So I'll watch Doug, The adventures of Pete and Pete, The golden girls, Friends, Webster, Sabrina the teenage witch, Fresh prince of Bel-air, That girl, The Jeffersons, Family matters, Picket fences, Tales from the crypt, Are you afraid of the dark?, The brady bunch, 21 jump street, etc. That's how I got into Eight is enough and Punky Brewster. Same with The flying nun. I watched the first season of that last year. I said "I really liked these episodes. I'm gonna watch the first season and see if the rest of the series is good." and they were. Now I love Eight is enough and Punky Brewster. The flying nun, I'll probably watch again at some point, but it aint a big favorite or anything. Oh and I was born in 87. So I'm only in my 30's,lol. So ya, I watch mainly 70's and 80's movies. Past 2 years I've gotten more into Silent films from the 1920's. I'm also watching more 70's movies. More 80's movies. More 90's movies even. So I'm broadening my 70's and 80's movies even more. I mainly listen to the same music I've always listened to, except for a few new stuff. I listen to the new albums from bands I've liked for a long time. Last year I got into 70's Disco, like Abba. Abba is awesome!!! Got really into Madonna as well. I listened to her first 5 albums. The first 4 are absolute masterpieces. The 5th album, took me a few listens to get into it, accept it, and appreciate what she was doing. I've always liked her of course, but never listened to a full album. Now I'm a fan. I've been a long time Leslie Gore fan. I've been listening to her since at least like 2016. Every year I also listen to music from the 1910's - 1950's, etc at some point. And it isn't just that "it's familiar" I got a ton of reasons why I prefer older TV shows and older movies in particular. I hate the BORING, DULL, LIFELESS color palettes and fashion. Seriously, where did all the fashion go? The 60's, especially the 70's, and 80's they had STYLE. Shot on FILM. I HATE shot on digital. I hate the color grading. I hate this bluish tint and color palette I see so often in movies. Where every single character is wearing blue, often UGLY navy blue, or grey, or black. Making it look plain and boring. Boring backgrounds. The lack of grain. I 100% agree with Tarantino when he said "I feel CHEATED" when I see a film shot on digital. I can't stand modern "We got to shove political commentary down your throat. No subtly. No giving the audience the ability to rub two sticks together. THE AUDIENCE IS STUPID and you HAVE TO TELL THEM EVERYTHING. We need to criticize EVERYTHING. BREAKING THE FOURTH WALL. BREAKING THE FOURTH WALL. AINT I BRILLIANT, AINT I CLEVER?!" The writing, the directing. Where are all those shots of people's legs and feet to build suspense? Where are the shots from the trees, the leaves? Where are the shots from the foliage? Films in New york....where are all my shots of the skyscrapers, of the characters walking around New york?! If your gonna set your film in New york, i expect to see NEW YORK. I want to feel like I am actually IN the environment, and also....what about SOUND?! Ya, why does everything sound like it's in a sound stage? WALKING SHOULD HAVE SOUND. Opening a drawer, closing it, rummaging through it, etc SHOULD HAVE SOUND. Also...it's the 2020's. Same with the 2010's.....WHERE IS ALL THE DEBAUCHERY?! Where is our BDSM Madonna, like she was in the 90's?! I watch all these 70's and 80's movies, like Hellraiser from 87. I watched the remake purely for the female Pinhead and that is when it hit me "YOU COULD NOT MAKE HELLRAISER FROM 87 TODAY!!!" I mean,Hellraiser 1 and 2 are SLEAZY MOVIES. You would think in the year 2020 we'd have a lot more sleazy movies that would rival the 70's and 80's. You'd think we'd have our Madonnas and 2livecrews, Marilyn Mansons, etc pushing buttons and being far more shocking. Another thing I don't like - concept and commentary and politics instead of you know - CHARACTERS AND STORY. The fact that movies have to appeal to EVERYBODY; the sanitization and mainstreaming of movies, in particular horror movies. I've been bashing horror movies for that since i was 13-14, 15 years old in 2001, 2002. Same with action movies. Movies in the 2000's felt like they lost their exploitation factor, their "this is made for a SPECIFIC demographic." The death of the movie star. I couldn't give a f**k about any of these new actors really, and I don't use the word "Actress" just like I say the word "guys" and "them." Actor, guys, and them to me are gender neutral. The lighting, because it was shot on digital. I want that shot on film lighting!!!!!! Shot on digital, it looks hazy and blurry, dull, boring, and over exposed. I hate it! HATE IT! HATE IT!!!!!!! The lack of soundtracks. Most modern soundtracks to movies SUCK. Are no where near as good as 70's and 80's movies. A lot of those movies had their own music, their own soundtracks made JUST FOR the movie. Where is the color?! Colors that pop?! Again, everything is just washed out, every character is wearing blue, grey, black, etc. The color grading DOWNPLAYS the color. Going back to New york, Friday the 13th part 8 feels MORE LIKE A NEW YORK MOVIE THEN SCREAM 6!!!! All of the environment feels lifeless, not in focus TO DISGUISE that it wasn't shot in New york....they couldn't even try and at least build a set to show Ghostface walking along a New york street to kill the psychiatrist. Instead we get him going to the door and he's killed from outside, and again, the color grading. TERRIBLE and the directing. Multiple times through out Scream 5 I kept screaming "ZOOM THE F**K OUT!!!!!!* During the killer reveal kitchen scene - it was driving me NUTS. I had an intense urge to PHYSICALLY walk into my computer screen INTO THE FILM, grab the camera and go "THERE!!!!! ZOOM THE F**K OUT!!!! NOT EVERYTHING HAS TO BE A F**KING CLOSE UP! SHOW THE ROOM! WIDE SHOTS! WIDE SHOTS! WIDE SHOTS! EXTERIOR SHOTS!!!!! IS IT SO F**KING HARD?!" It was infuriating. Same with Terrifier 2. That bluish tint. Made it UNBEARABLE to even watch, to even look at. Let alone the boring characters, the boring story, boring slasher killer, etc. Barbie, nothing but a mouth piece for political commentary. You know what I wanted and expected from a Barbie movie?! A BARBIE MOVIE. Not a "i'm gonna use Barbie; exploit the barbie franchise to spout commentary." Just like a critic said about the recent Mortal Kombat movie vs the original film from the 90's "oh they gave me the fan service. You know what they forgot to do though? They got to make the MOVIE THOUGH; THEY FORGOT TO MAKE A MOVIE OUT OF IT." I just want to be able to just WATCH A F**KING MOVIE and be entertained. Escapism and I can enjoy all the subtexts of the film and so forth. IS THAT SO TERRIBLE TO ASK?! Oppenheimer, I should of LOVED that movie as a history buff. I liked it, but am I gonna watch it again? HELL NO, why?! Because it's a Christopher Nolan movie and a perfect example of "The audience is too stupid". SHOW, NOT TELL. Now have I liked some modern movies, recent movies? Movies I'll even rewatch over and over again. Added to my movie rotation? Yes, mostly independent movies, but very few. And Eight is enough. Love the 70's touch to the show, love 70's fashion. The acting, the writing, how every single character is very well defined and well written, but what impresses me the most is the environment. It feels so much more real, shooting on location. So many shows are very restrictive in terms of environments. Where it's just set pieces.
I don't think I can reply in the same depth! I don't think well ever see the likes of 'I spit on your grave again.' It's all much too sanitized now. I certainly feel that much new stuff is written without the likes of people my age in mind. It's as though we don't exist as consumers and I think that's why I consume so much old telly and movies. You're right in what you say and I agree. Colour grading...it's lime anything shot in Scandanavia has a green tint all the time. I don't mind it In places, but it seems like it's overdone these days. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.
With respect to binge watching, I do sometimes watch one or two episodes back to back, but generally (with streaming services) only watch one episode at a time. A recent example of this for me is The Queen’s Gambit on Netflix, a popular show that I wanted to take a look at. I watch one episode on a Sunday, as time allows. Honestly, I tend to watch older TV shows because they’re not polluted with liberal ideology. This may not be a popular thing to say, but so many modern movies and TV shows have been ruined by going woke. Interesting video!
I only listen to my old cd's watch my old movies and tv shows .. Only tv i watch now a days is the footy Aussie rules wrestling and home and away an Aussie classic 😅
Greetings from Australia...I like watching old shows from the 1950s-1980s that I have never seen before because I was either not around when they were made or I was too young to watch it when it first aired. These "new" old shows in some ways are far more entertaining than the stuff they are churning out these days. I'm currently going through some of the old TV westerns like "The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp" and when I finish that I'll move onto either "Tales of Wells Fargo" or "Bat Masterson".
I get what you mean about new oldies. There's so much to get that I doubt I'll see a.small amount of what's out there. I bought the cowboy series that Steve McQueen did and started his career (Wanted Dead or Alive). It's on my list of to watch shows. And Bonanza is one I like to go back to. Thanks for commenting.
During uncertain times, people tend to look at the past. I watched a lot of old TV shows during the pandemic. Familiarity either breeds contempt or brings about comfort. Characters like Al Bundy would not be allowed on television today ... well not in the USA or UK, because modern audiences are easily offended by almost every joke imaginable .... As you've probably noticed, the entertainment industry is destroying itself at the moment. Death by wokeism.
The great thing about old series is you can pick up great shows from the padt you missed out on. I watched the FX show The Shield last year and was blown away by it.
Sadly, 2:13 is what makes me *_not_* want to watch old shows. It's too depressing, knowing that so many of the jokes and customs and sentiments have since been deemed either "corny" or downright _"ignorant!"_ or _"offensive!"_ (by our current, 21st century scolds & overlords). 😞 Part of enjoying an older show (for me) is that you've always had the possibility of sharing the fun with others (telling co-workers about it, quoting from the show, etc.), but, that's becoming increasingly difficult to do these days. Consequently, watching old shows just feels very... lonely. So I avoid it.
I think you'll find that it's not as bad as you think. There are more people than you realise, who are sick of being told how that should lead their lives. It doesn't make you racist, uncaring, or whatever label people use these days, just because you watched something old that may not suit today's moods. Many people are still in that group of people who have common sense and know that what's funny is still funny. I'm sorry, but just because some people take offence, doesn't alter the fact that you have the right to talk about something, that you don't find offensive. Obviously there's always going to be a line we shouldn't cross, but that's not what we're talking about,
I like watching old black and white shows and movies from back when TV and film were a relatively recent phenomenon. They have a very different feel to them. For example: a lot of old films feel more like plays that were recorded on video. Also some films have long quiet moments where nothing is happening, which is unthinkable in today's movies.
I've recently watched all seven series of The Brothers and am about to watch the last episode of Secret Army. Both are excellent. I was only a kid when these were first televised and was always sent to bed just before each episode started. Although I never watched them the theme tunes stuck in my head (Secret Army was quite a scary theme) as I was heading 'up the stairs to Bedfordshire' as my mother used to say.
@@JamesMurphyYT The Brothers just gets better and better as the series progresses. Not cheap (cost me nearly £100) but worth every penny. Anything written by NJ Crisp or produced by Gérard Glaister is quality.
I’m 42. And I really enjoyed watching re runs of an old tv show from the 60s I would watch with my grams, who is no longer with us. But the show is Dark Shadows.
I recently watched the entirety of Poirot, and the Joan Hickson Miss Marple and loved them. I hated them when I was a kid, but then again, I never really *watched* them, I just sulked or did something else until something I wanted came on. I'm going to try Inspector Morse and the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes' next, which I also used to hate. The older I get, the more I find myself enjoying all kinds of media my parents loved but I hated when I was a kid. I now find myself enjoying my Dad's music, like Ella Fitzgerald, and watching his favourite films like A Man for all Seasons and Singin' in the Rain. And the shows my Mum liked like the ones listed above. I guess it is comforting. Now that my Dad is gone and my Mum is ailing, I suppose it's a way of feeling closer to/remembering them.
I'm in exactly the same boat as you. I've rebought most of my Dad's old LPs.and love listening to music I used to hate. I buy films that my parents loved and watch shows that I once hated that they loved. Pure nostalgia. Thanks for sharing.
I love watching old shows even once from before I was born in 1984 cause even though some shows can feel like a product of it ps time I like seeing what my parents had to watch in the 50’s 60’s and 70’s and I tend to like the older shows a bit better than the modern shows even though I do like some modern shows just not as much cause I was apart of the generation that grew up on nick@nite that started my love for older shows back in the 90’s even finding my all time favorite show Batman in 1989 when I was 5 years old
I'm much the same even though I'm in my 60s. I buy films from my parent's era as I remember watching them with them when I was a young child and they were shown on TV. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I’m always watching the old shows, drives the wife nuts Lol. I’ve currently got Alf, Dukes of Hazard, Wonder Woman and He-Man on the go via my Apple TV. Also I’ll dip in an out of Knight Rider and Airwolf on Blu-ray every now and then.
I grew up in the late 50's and early 60's watching the cowboy flicks, Roy Rogers and Gene Autry and all the rest. I bought a box set of 42 movies ranging from Randolph Scott to the spaghetti westerns. I'm afraid I just can't take it any more. The violence in the later movies is just too upsetting for me and the earlier ones have lost their appeal. I think I would like silent westerns. But I still like to listen to Gene Autry's singing and also the Sons Of The Pioneers. My interests have transferred into literary challenges that exceed my capacities but I find that alternate practice exhilarating.
The motivation behind shows is different now. Streaming has made it so quantity of content is more important than quality. There are still some good new shows but generally speaking the standard of writing in older shows is better.
I have both of those series on DVD, plus things from Man from U.N.C.L.E. to MacGyver (the real one), from Smallville to V (the miniseries and tv series). And can easily watch shows like Perry Mason online. The writing was real, you didn't see the twist coming and the wit was unexpected and made you suddenly laugh out loud. As for comedy, I have Taxi, Cheers, Rising Damp and more. And they still make me laugh. As for today's series, I find the foul language, nudity and gore a big turn off. Although I just watched William and Mary and it very good, showing Martin Clunes can do drama. Another Brit show I can watch over and over is The Professionals with Martin Shaw. And I have the Tom Baker Dr. Who series. Still fun and adventurous. It started to lose something for me after that and currently I have found it a bit violent. Oh, Coronation Street never gets old! I do 2-a-night binge, like you. One interesting thing I discovered is that bingeing really old series is disappointing because it was the same thing every show. On Route 66, every show had the two stars picking up girls and getting in fist fights just in a different city.
I think my biggest problem with a lot of today's series is that they seem so dark in mood. I don't find a lot of joy in them. Too many series leave me cold because of it. I watch TV to be entertained and I don't feel entertained. I don't understand why there can't be a mix. It's why I find myself going back to older series. If you like Martin Shaw, check out Judge John Deed and Inspector George Gently. They're both watchable.
@@JamesMurphyYT LOL! I have both of those! Was never able to see him on stage, which he preferred, but my mouse pad has his character from The Professionals on it and a couple of magnets on the fridge. Must have been the hair...
@@JamesMurphyYT Plus, TV dramas have always depicted the times, like Dragnet through Law and Order. Today, we have wars, mass shooting and pandemics. The new shows reflect the times and we watch TV to get away from it for awhile.
Great video, as always. Could it be that as we get older we have a bigger and bigger back catalogue of programmes that we have enjoyed, and if we are going to try something new to us (like you did with the Duchess of Duke Street) it will be something from a period in which remember they made good TV?
I think that's very much the case. I love it when I come across a series that I vaguely remember, even ifnI didn't watch it. I always seem pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoy it. Thansk for commenting.
I'd rather watch something I already seen, or know of. But it does come down to time. Which is why I would love to watch House. But it's gonna take a bit. I'd rather watch certain episodes of shows I like. Three's Company has recently came on demand. Been years since i had the dvds. But even then, i just watched certain episodes over and over. Maybe because of the start, middle, end, of the show. Not much investment. Where new shows are all back story after back story. So jumping into something can not be so great all the time. Be spending more time wondering whats going on.
I'm by no means woke but I admit to cringing a bit when watching old British comedies. Language has definitely changed and I never found foreign sterotypes particularly funny. If you're enjoying The Duchess of Duke Street, you might like Bramwell as it deals with the gritty social issues of the Victorian Age. I'm watching NYPD Blue just now and it's as good as I remember. For some lighter viewing, I'm enjoying The Wonder Years which has the great music of the 70s and the nostalgia of a simpler time.
After home improvement was over I got the frist season in the Christmas of 2004 after getting the frist season I continued collecting the rest of the dvd series until I had home improvement seasons 1 through 8 I didd the same thing with the full house tv series also got the whole entire series of the. Jetsons and the flintstones and Alf still need to finsh collecting the rest of leave it to beaver don’t know if I’ll be able to finsh collecting the simpsons tv series
Leave it to Beaver teaches you that you pay for a crime. Shows today like The Flash lest characters commit murder and then are forgiven and never have to face prison time, so it teaches you that it is okay to break the law and hurts others.
I have loads of boxsets of old stuff. We always preferred old TV, the stories & acting are far better. Even when the sets wobble & the effects are dodgy, they tend to be well written. I'm not a fan of streaming it just tends to be very well produced mediocrity. Actually, the whole top shelve of the DVD cupboard is classic series from The Prisoner, The Avengers to Classic Who, Blake'7 & Day of the Triffids. I think the first 4 series of Mission: Impossible are on a hard drive somewhere. Really got back into that recently.
I have all the Emma Peel episodes on DVD. She was my era of The Avengers. I love rewatching those old series, and they seem.morenenjoyable now than they did then. Thanks for sharing your thoughts
I will mostly watch TV and movies from my youth because they've made much more entertaining content back then. It wasn't about being political and force-feeding a message down our throats. I find there's no point watching today's "entertainment" because it will almost always fail to satisfy and then of course you've got the actors and filmmakers who will slander you for not liking current year productions.
I only watch old TV series because they're not infested with wokeness. My favourite TV show is married with children there is no way that show would get made today.
I completely agree. Jiggery wokery has infected everything in its path. There is a growing trend of people now only watching old shows and films to avoid the pc culture. Also I’ve started re watching married with children it’s really funny.
I'm 41 and just started watching stuff watched as kid like Ateam, hulk, Knight rider, only fools, also red dwarf and x files things like that, simpler times, nostalgia and not full of wokeness nonsense just to signal virtue.wouldnt mind but I pay 100 quid month for virgin and Internet and rarely watch it lol
The only newer show I watched was Cobra Kai other than that I watch my old favorite shows like Airwolf and Miami vice, Knight Rider, The Rifleman, Unsolved Mysteries, Flinstones, Scooby doo, Charlie Brown. I watch the shows for two reasons, I'm tired of the woke nonsense and I like going back to the way the world used to be. The only thing that has improved is technology other than that life in general was better in the past
I'm re watching Miami Vice at the moment (I'm on the second series). I did t watch Cobra Kai. For some reason I just didn't fancy it. I remember The Rifleman when I was little. I wouldn't mind seeing that again. I love old series as well.
@@JamesMurphyYT I was a fan of The karate kid movies growing up in the 80s so maybe that's why I like Cobra Kai however I will say seasons 1 & 2 I feel they nailed it after that it kind of went off the rails for me. Any other rifleman Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam rapid fire lol
I rewatched The Karate Kid films a few years ago and loved them and didn't want to watch Cobra Kai in case it altered my perception. I was looking on Amazon the other day and they had the series of Casey Jones and I'm oh, so tempted!@@RetroreviewsPlus
@@JamesMurphyYT as I said before season 1 and 2 of Cobra Kai is the best and since they use the original actors reprising the roles so Ralph macchio reprises his role as Daniel lorusso and William zabka reprises his role as Johnny Lawrence. This time around you see through the eyes of Johnny like 30 years later how did their life go after Daniel won the tournament. Basically their lives were switched Daniel is very successful and Johnny is down on his luck and a drunk but he comes back and he re opens Cobra Kai and his rivalry with Daniel is rekindled. So it was definitely a very nostalgic feeling but then season 3 kind of went off the rails. So I would recommend season 1 and 2 though. And yeah that would be tempting Casey Jones
We prefer to watch older British dramas. Often these shows were based on books, so the plot and acting are superior to anything currently being produced. They also give us an escape from the world of wokeness and indoctrination that modern shows have created and continually try to shove down our throats.
They just released the 10 to most streamed programs, everything on the list is either years since ended, or decades since started
I've not seen that list. Does that mean the new stuff doesn't compare?
I love rewatching the old shows on DVD because the humor from the old days is what makes me laugh. Modern humor doesn't appeal to me. And the characters are like old friends who I understand and who entertain me.
I think humour has changed and adapted over the years and I don't get so much of it today.
Thansk for commenting.
@rft2001 a lot of today's humour is too political for me. I'm.not a political animal.
@@JamesMurphyYT Same for me. I don't like a lot of political humor anymore either unless it is done with a lot of creativity and characterization.
@johnnyjohn-johnson7738 I wear roses coloured glasses too, except I go back to the 60s and 70s.!
I was watching The Twilight Zone the other day. My rationale is that old shows are simply better.
I must feel the same because I find myself watching old shows most of the time.

Just been working through George and Mildred. The Ropers are truly an unforgettable couple!
I loved them. I used to call my Mum and Dad that.
I can't work out that her next door neighbour had married Chrissie in Mad about the House!

Some of the TV shows I revisit often are Seinfeld, Tales from the Darkside, Twilight Zone (original and 80's versions), Golden Girls, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Fringe. They are comforting and just really good shows. I find most newer shows lack the charm for older shows
Charm...now that's a good word to use. It's why I liked Seinfeld. Thanks for commenting.
I have them as box sets. I love indulging in them. Thanks for commenting.
Maybe a weekend of Francis the Talking Mule, Abbot and Costello, Gi Joe cartoons,,
I enjoy things more these days on a more 'innocent' level, as most modern shows and movies dont interest me, for many reasons, including being downright disturbing.
24 was amazing. And actually a perfect show to binge. God, the week lasted so long, waiting for the next episode on TV!
@kallistoindrani5689 I'm watching a series 4 of 24 at the moment. It's still a great watch
Attention span is another factor. Modern TV shows have an average scene length of 3 seconds - young people of today would quickly become bored with the pace of older programmes. They are victims of the cult of instant gratification
It's certainly true on UA-cam. It's as though people need to get everything now.
Thanks for commenting.
I loved Lois! I think I had a man-crush on Teri Hatcher!

I’m 57 and enjoy travelling back in time with old original TV shows, it takes me back to my childhood, my roots, reminds me of my parents, school friends, playground chat and the topics that were being featured in news bulletins…Love thy neighbour is one of my favourites…to be honest I reckon my generation was spoiled for choice when trying to find top quality entertainment on the TV and it’s definitely worthwhile revisiting some of the content that was created during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s…thanks for making time to create interesting material to intellectually stimulate ‘Grumpy Old Gits’ like me..! lol😇

Seems as though it serves your purpose. Thanks for sharing.
We still watch a lot of old shows too. Thanks for commenting
@johnnyjohn-johnson7738 if you're thinking of showd like Time Tunnel you have to add Land Of The Giants and Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea.

I sometimes watch reruns of the TV show "Barney Miller." The same issues the world is dealing with today such as homelessness, gay rights, equal employment rights, gentrification, vigilantism, war, corporate irresponsibility, were also occurring in the mid-1970s and early 1980s.
We just hear more about them now because of the Internet.

Yes I have seen Babylon 5 so many times and return to it every year or so. Such a great show that I doubt i'll see a better scifi series

For me, I like watching "old" shows from around 2005 as that's when I was around 7ish years old. Everything felt so much better back then. Of course I have nostalgia, but it's also nice to try to dig up old memories and try to get a bigger picture of my past. There's a certain charm to finally knowing how old you were when you saw something or did something. And watching those shows again with a developed mind is akin to getting a 4K remaster of your own memories. And to be honest, nothing today seems to meet the quality of those older shows as well.
I totally get what you're saying. For me it's shos from the 60s and 70s.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
When I find a TV show I love, I watch it multiple times. Then I introduce it to people in my household getting just as much pleasure watching their reactions. Now that I've bored everyone in my household with just about every TV show I've ever enjoyed, I've started watching reaction videos on UA-cam.
I enjoy reaction videos as well!.

I'd like to see the old shows WITH the old commercials. No ED, hormone replacement, or class-action lawsuits.
I have to say I miss the Shake & Vac, Cinzano and Smash ads! They were enjoyable.
I've even found myself watching ad compilations on UA-cam.

We bought it recently

Sharpe is Great show
Love your channel mate!
Freedom from woke in old TV that I enjoy. So enriching...
I get that! Thanks for commenting.
My online media only comes from UA-cam, I will watch clips of mainstream media on there amd watch TV box sets either on DVD or Old Torrent download s that come before streaming services where a thing.

When I saw "old TV shows" in the title I thought we were going to be talking about Leave it to Beaver and Dragnet.

@@JamesMurphyYT Right, older tv shows are more fun to watch then todays shows.
The quality as well is another reason to rewatch some of the older shows. Some of the new shows visually are stunning and impressive, but not as well written or well conceived. Thanks for the video.
I'd agree about the quality of writing.

Mannix! I loved that. I've never seen Murder She wrote, probably for the same reasons as you, but yes, I'd watch that now, too!

Columbo is hard to beat!
Columbos was great. Thanks for commenting.
Absolutely agree with you. I love watching old programs & films sitcoms from the 70s & 80s in particular. Plus a lot of stuff that may not be shown on tv now. Such as In Sickness and in Health.l, Hancocks half hour etc. great fun!

Im watching Miami Vice tv series at the moment on dvd. It reminds me of my childhood. Its great fun and i love all the fashion and the music.
I've just finished Series 1 and am about to start series 2.

I bought the complete series during the lockdown for £5!

I've found I'm doing that more and more. I suppose I'm a different person to who I was then!

I don't think well ever see the likes of 'I spit on your grave again.'
It's all much too sanitized now.
I have to say. I did enjoy Th Queens Gambit. It was one series I did enjoy on Netflix.

It's true, you wo t see shows like that anymore.

The great thing about old series is you can pick up great shows from the padt you missed out on. I watched the FX show The Shield last year and was blown away by it.
The Shield was a great series.

I remember watching so many 30s and 40s films when I was growing uo.

I'm watching the first series of The Brothers at the minute and loving it.

And the shows my Mum liked like the ones listed above. I guess it is comforting. Now that my Dad is gone and my Mum is ailing, I suppose it's a way of feeling closer to/remembering them.

I'd agree with streaming. it's all about quantity.

House is a great watch. Its worth the time investment.

I'll have to check Bramwell.
I enjoyed NYPD Blue as well.

How about Phineas and Ferb since that show came on TV in 2007/2008?
Don't think I saw that. Thanks for commenting.
1960s The Outer Limits, The Avengers, The Twilight Zone, Planet of the Apes.
O loved the Emma Peel era of The Avengers. Thanks for commenting
What about a Top 10 list of best, old TV Series?
I think it would take ages for me to come up with a list, but I'll think on it.
Thanks for commenting.
There's also a danger doing this too. There's gonna be some you thought were great and on a rewatch you realise they're awful. V The Series.
Sure enough. I've had that too. I loved V first time round. It hasn't held up well.

@@JamesMurphyYT The V Mini Series is still great though! Just the following tv show that was shite.
I'd love to see The Flintstones again. I'd forgotten about that.
Thanks for sharing.

@@JamesMurphyYT Actually, I only have the Emma Peel ones too, they were the most witty together.
I find that I enjoy watching the older series too.
Thanks for your comment.
Ty for being brave and making videos.@@JamesMurphyYT
I've been watching family matters and maybe will rewatch more older family shows. New family shows feel forced and not as wholesome.
Thanks for your comment
I only watch old TV series because they're not infested with wokeness. My favourite TV show is married with children there is no way that show would get made today.
Sadly, you're probably right. Tha sk for sharing your thoughts.
I completely agree. Jiggery wokery has infected everything in its path. There is a growing trend of people now only watching old shows and films to avoid the pc culture. Also I’ve started re watching married with children it’s really funny.
yeah today shows are infected with woke stuff and are extremely political centered
Very true. That was great fun.
I won’t watch modern tv, the wokeness and political correctness liberally inserted just destroys the chance of seeing something remotely enjoyable.
£100 a month! Ouch!. I like watching stuff I watched growing up too.
Thansk for commenting.
@@JamesMurphyYT mainly for kid (single dad with 10yr old but when he asleep it's how I unwind)
We've been watching the Duchess Of Duke Street and Monarch Of The Glen,.
