At the time of TNG, I was wishing they would do a spinoff series based on the crew of a D'deridex ship. Having a series centered in non-humans protagonists, together with the awesome ship would had been great. For example, imagine if Voyager had been a D'deridex.

Reading it and hearing it in my head, it sounds gratifying that SW: Episode V , having stolen "Shields up" and "cloaking device" from the at-the-time seemingly exiled Star Trek franchise, had one of its own lines lifted into a ST:TNG episode:
      "Alert all commands."

Nice take on this class of ship. I recall the D’deridex was conceptualised to fit the narrative of the Romulans being a very feared and unwelcome adversary to Picard and his crew - it would pick on the Enterprise D every now and then and the hero ship could do nothing about it! This was the case until the producers decided to run with the Borg, the Romulan ship was then downgraded to be ‘equal’ to the Galaxy class in later seasons, and then the expendible cannon fodder we saw in DS9.
Device / plot armour aside - just look at 0:03 with its opening volley of fwd firepower - no alpha quadrant ship would get up from that.

For number 4, I thought I saw somewhere that the targeting computers of the D’Deridex class was originally intended to fight cruiser sized vessels and actually had a tougher time against smaller ships. That was why the Romulans eventually launched the Valdore and Kerchan class, not sure if that’s canon or not but I kinda liked that idea personally.
(Also in a Star Wars vs Star Trek scenario the first ability you showed would be extremely effective against a star destroyer.)
    Anyway, love the video!!!

Tbh D'deridex would probably fair decentish or poorly vs many small attack crafs like JH had, as they had to just overwhelm the defences at rear and disable weapons. Like in WW2 you send 200-300 planes and there was no effective AA, Even now best systems work to 10-20 attack targets, and then they cant focus on anymore and are free defenceless targets. Alternative attack style would be ramming like JH did often, and reparing a D'Deridex would take much longer and more resources then building a new bug ship (as repairs by default take much longer and are less cost efficient).
To it even when D'Deridex clearly being much stronger then Galaxy class as even in TNG show you have a sceen where it just passing by and shooting 1 volley from forward guns took down to minimum Enterprises shields (2nd volley = dead Galaxy, it wasnt a pure combat ship and that was a waste in terms of war (it was basicly a mobile base), thus making him have weaknesses that you dont need on a warship (all this is cannon):
      1) had many non combat systems (it was kinda a mobile base) that are actually mentioned here, you could hold ships in mid of ship (like they did in the show), the fighter bay/scout bay (you dont need such large part of the ship dedicated to it), it also had Giagantic storage capabitlies for tousands of ppl/small army.
      2) it was basicly a mobile base and a science ship - as it was used to survey/research all anomallies = shit loads of non esential research equipment and sensors.
      3) you rly could storage a ship like we seen in shows in between the ships wings not rly needed if you have more/cheaper ships in navy.
      4) yes the shape for shure allowed better hiding of the warp field (and all we know he could go undetected to warp 6 with the old cloacking devices, and not new ones used on Valdore (had fire power in somewhat lvl's of D'Deridex if we look at movies and quite decent durability) or Scimitar - where Enterprise couldnt detect them at all), and still increasing size of the ship overall reduces its invisibility.
It is an epic ship, but i whished they made for Dominion War at least 1 lower subclas of Romulans so that they are decentish represented, as no navy can function on 2 ship classes alone.
When Romulans actually were mostly victorious vs Dominion in engagemens (like we see in show) it rly is wierd how they made them weak after it, to the lvl of not being able to evacuate their home world :/ Either they had some wierd civil war (when shinzon got to be the leader) and lost shit loads of navy or i dont know. As Romulans had by far the lowest casualties and loses. This is because of shorter time in war, but also because in DS9 we only can hear they were winning, and basicly very few times we hear they lost battles except the joined forces - only one significant Romulan vs Dominion loss we hear about is their leader ship for a strike group.

They’re behind the shuttle bays, with their exhaust being directed along the upper surface of the inner wing. I always imagined that this was to somehow condition the engine exhaust to aid with stealth.

    • @pwnmeisterage
      @pwnmeisterage 4 роки тому +1

On the shows, plasma carries power around the ship and "venting plasma" always causes an immediate, dramatic loss of power. So probably not a useful mode of propulsion, even if it did work the ship would powerless for a time after the speed burst.
Also the "Kolvoord Starburst" idea ... vented plasma flares could ignite and blow up your own engines, not good in battle.

If you're not accelerating reaction mass to high relativistic exhaust velocities (especially with a ship of _that_ *size* ), then you're really just ... venting plasma.

This was a great video(the raptor docking was something I never thought of!),but there's a couple things I don't agree with for example while the galaxy class may at first seem much weaker due to the sizes involved it can fire,in theory as i don't remember it being shown,20 torpedoes from BOTH launchers at the same time something no other ship of it's generation could match which would be an insta kill on anything smaller then a cube.
A few years back on trekyards channel I said how a military has to balance it's resources between high tech and mass production and the romulans caught with the tech based federation on one side and the mass producing klingons on the other would have to have the capability to match both something that would be impossible unless they did two things.
1 # They focus on improving cloaking devices to counter the federations strategic long range sensor capability.
2 # They use OLDER weapons and shield tech for mass production to counter the klingons fleet firepower.
So following these needs the obvious answer would be to use decades old STARBASE size weapons, which while less advanced would be powerful due to size, fitted into a less sophisticated but large mass producible hulls that could fit the starbase sized weapons and which would simply require more materials something their slave laborers could supply.
3 # Sensors would be next for importance so THEY could track federation ships.
4 # This leaves SHIELDS which would be the least important for them and would get the least money/resources and so their ships would be more vulnerable compared to nearly any other enemy something clearly shown in the shows.

    • @HuntingTarg
      @HuntingTarg 2 роки тому

I do not agree. I think that, compared to smaller, more specialized designs, the Warbird - as an emblem of Romulan prowess and superiority - would receive as much attention as the Federation's Galaxy Class or the Klingon's K'vort class (or even more, based on its size and complexity), and EVERY system area would be given a priority status relative to its importance in various scenarios. While it's reasonable to guess that with cloaking technology and powerful weaponry, Romulans might skimp on shields; but not, I say, in a class of this size and prestige. The 'Alpha Strike' is as close as one gets to 'instakill' on a full-class Starship or Battlecruiser, but I do not think the Romulans would be so arrogant as to depend on opening moves to win the board, especially with a design of so much secondary capability, which gives them more ways to win - and more ways to lose if such a vessel becomes crippled or boarded.

The series Enterprise had Vulcan ships have a wheel structure where the hull had a hole in it, similar to the gap in the hull of the Romulan cruiser. This implied that a gap-hull may have been a vulcanian design aesthetic.

  • @ApsalusSigma

When you show and tell the D'deridex Aquila's ability to make a cloaked alpha strike then keep moving forward to continue it's assault on it's target, made me think how very accurately similar that is to how a cloakable Klingon D7 / Ktinga Battlecruiser would itself make an attack run; as explained in the Klingon Space Fleet Doctrine. It's really exciting how on so many levels the D7 / K'tinga continues to be such an influential heritage of both the Klingons and Romulans.
Also, I feel like that Plasma Spike would be a devastatingly dramatic way for a D'deridex warbird's strafing run to cause the targeted enemy ship to become battered, blind and impotent. This would be excellent for a villainous-like escape at the conclusion of perhaps reconnaissance in force , or as part of a group strategy to cause such an enemy to be helpless and vulnerable to follow-up attacks from the D'deridex's wingmates or even it's attack craft / Fighters.
As for the Cloaking Device, within Star Trek Picard (though easily overlooked and hard to understand from the scene), the Snakehead fighter was able to use it's Cloaking device to cause a false "afterimage"-like Projection to misdirect and confuse an opponent. Perhaps this something Romulans can do with the cloaking system of the D'deridex, with itself or even other ships, fighters or even torpedoes and mines; Romulans do seem to a race and group that like being clever with how they befuddle, manipulate and then brutalize the opposition. This makes be start thinking about the Andorian telepath operated tele-presence Holo Drone from Star Trek Enterprise (from one of the best story arcs in that series).

'Before some of you call this a Mary Sue ship's - bro, it's not. Your ideas make sense.
The plasma spike can also be for rapid plasma venting which is the same as a smoke screen in WW2 era and prior navies.
Those Vents are also differentially balanced thanks to the design, so both vents on top and bottom wing sections rapid ejecting plasma could equal a reaction force, A.E, a lot of damned thrust. This means that whole the D'Deridex is large enough to have a lowe turn rate, it does have the potential to rapid accelerate and use 'Boom and Zoom' tactics which, matches the 'Alpha Strike' presentation.
The fact that the Warbird is also a Fleet Carrier vessel is something I wish we saw in action. It has huge potential for the Commander of that vessel to perform Carrier Ops while cloaked which actually makes the D'Deridex one of the few viable Carrier types to exist in Star Trek's lore (considering that Star Trek does not play well with the idea of small fighter ships being viable).
The Singularity core is going to be a more potent powerplant than virtually all known basic Warp Cores using Anti-matter containment methods. This plays a role in just how powerful the shields would be and how potent the disruptor weapons would be. There's is a far higher potential energy potential with this D'Deridex's core, lending even more credence to the idea of a Cloaked Alpha Strike doctrine.

I know that over the decades, many people like to point out how amazing it is that the D'Deridex is noticeably larger than a Galaxy class as a strong point however, I think it is even more impressive that despite being smaller, the Galaxy class (and possibly the Nebula class) are considered equals to the Warbird in terms of fighting ability.

Based on some measuring of other 3d ship models, the cubic volume of a d'deridex is around 26 million m^3, wile a galaxy class is around 5.8 million m^3. D'deridex volume would depend heavily on just how thick the wings are on any given model, but its safe to say that the nose section is easily more volumus than an entire galaxy class star ship.

I would object to the plasma spike being a bespoke ability for your ship variant. However Romulans do have a history of weaponized plasma effects, and its design to cover a vulnerable aft section is sound tactics.
As for your alpha strike attack? C'mon standard romulan tactics there, at least from my run at STO. close gapwhile cloaked. Decloak while unloading everything, and keep on going.
I love my little t'varo. Nothing against the D'deridex, but I always found her to be unwieldy, slow to turn, sluggish, and a poor fit for my piloting. Give me the little doom hockey puck any day.

I know I commented the bulk of what I'm about to say on a previous video but I realized something this morning and I thought I'd share.
I believe the the D'deridex cavity is where industrial replicator emitters within the wings materialize objects, like smaller vessel. (Of course, in this case, "smaller" includes vehicles the size of Excelcior. Indeed, a galaxy class would fit in the cavity but could exit only if the head & necks could get out of the way.) I believe a D'deridex has at least two artificial quantum singularities (AQSs) and mass can be directly removed from them at a rate of at least 51 kg/sec to be used by the replicators for creating objects. (51 kg/s is the mass equivalent of the energy used by 1701-D warp fields at 9.6wf, the max speed given D'deridex in Tin Man. This energy use is according to the power usage graph found in the TNG Tech Manual. I believe the D'Deridex uses more energy going at this speed due to its greater mass and volume compared to the a Galaxy but I know of no other reference for power useage to make such estimations. Of course, the vessel would also need to power its cloaking device at the same time. No data on this power requirement, either. Factoring in inefficiency and I suspect the number is closer to 150 kg/s. But that is complete guess work.)
However, the total amount of mass usable to the replicators is probably much greater; indeed, probably more like 0.5 to 10 metric tonne per second, as 0.5 tonne per second would allow for a Constitution massed starship (~100 KT) to be replicated in around 2.5 days and 10 T/s would allow a Galaxy (~5 MT) class to be replicated in about 6 days. (I figure these are good Min/Max estimates.) Such huge amounts of mass could be removed from asteroids, comets, moons or other objects via teleporters. If true, then a D'deridex could belly up to a gigatonne asteroid and pump out attack drones by the millions to invade a solar system they want to conquer. Indeed, as big as she is, a D'deridex could probably temporarily carry enough troops to passify a small moon; and I would speculate the replicator and transporter systems would be beefy enough to support such an operation.
And this is what got me thinking this morning: What kind of enemy would require the kind of response I'm claiming a D'deridex, or a fleet of D'deridexs, could expell? Remember that this vessel was fully formed by the time of TNG:The Neutral Zone, when it first apeared. Remember Tebok's statement? "Matters more urgent caused our absence." I suspect those matters included the need for a D'deridex and all her capabilities. IMHO, including the ability to mass replicate infrastructure and transport onto planetary surfaces, replicate starships, eat entire asteroids for long(ish) term energy storage in their AQS.
A word about her AQS. We know a Romulan AQS is not like a natural black hole/singularity thanks to the TNG:Timescape aliens. I suspect an AQS is controlled via tractor beams of set to repel rather than attract, as was shown in TNG:The Naked Now. These high powered repulsor beams would intersect to create an artificial event horizon. My speculation is that mass can be stored as a singularity within this event horizon and can be forced to escape by shrinking the event horizon to increase the production of Hawking radiation, which can then be captured and diverted for the purposes of power or otherwise. The smaller the event horizon, the more Hawkings radiation is emitted; the larger the horizon, the less radiation. The precision of these repulsors would be extreme: natural singularities with hawkings radiation on the order of 50kg/s would be sub-atomic and AQS horizons would have to be similarly small.
Because in this case the horizon is largely independent of the amount of mass in the singularity, enormous amounts of mass could be stored and while forcing out Hawkings radiation at energy levels as though it were a small singularity; or the event horizon could be enlarged so that very little energy is radiated even though there is very little mass left in the singularity. To this extent I suspect there are at least two singularities on the D'deridex: one with a large event horizon so that you can feed it with mass collected by the Bussard collectors or transporters, and one with a small horizon from which you can extract power for running the vessel.
Furthermore, this method of extracting energy from an AQS would allow the Romulans to convert near 100% of the mass of the AQS into energy. Furthermore, unlike an antimatter system, any kind of matter can be used to create energy for your systems. An iron asteroid, for example, would do just fine. You would need ~25x more moles of anti-deuterium in your ships tanks to use one mole of iron, assuming you could use the iron in your injectors at all.
With all that said, and the extreme abilities of an AQS system mated with an industrial replicator could perform, what kind of "More urgent matter" would be required to create such a device in large numbers?
I don't really have a good answer but it's good story fodder.

Keep in mind that the minimum possible pressure vessel mass scales straight linearly with volume. If the D'deridex is 10x the pressurized volume, it either needs to be made of better materials, be 10x more massive, use its materials more efficiently, operate at lower pressures, or operate with lower margins of safety.
Furthermore, structural weight meant to withstand the vessel's own thrust is going to be an issue, as is armor, given that many D'deridex classes are intended as strictly warships and they have more difficulty dodging than smaller vessels. More heavily pressurized areas like tankage for impulse fuel will also have to be large and heavy. There is every reason to believe that it is *at least* as large relative to something like a Galaxy or Sovereign as its volume implies.

Note I don't mention antimatter or Dilithium. This is both because we don't have good understanding of the scaling laws that govern such things, and because I'm not totally convinced that the Romulans even use these. AFAIK, the Romulans use a small singularity to power the warp nacelles. Something that is even less easy to reason about than Federation tech.

  • @Wake_up._This_isnt_your_world
    @Wake_up._This_isnt_your_world 2 роки тому

There's also the matter of the singularity core. (aka, a small blackhole, contained inside a containment field)
Because a singularity core is a black hole, it has the advantage of being a endless source of energy. This practically means that the captain can do all sorts of shenanigans to make the ship even more of a monster, like putting maximum power to weapons, with little, or almost no effect to it's power cost. It can even put it's weapons in a overload state if he wants for some time, before it causes damage to the systems and the weapons.
The core can also redirect some of it's power to reinforce structural field, should it be needed, or, the captain can just create a artificial black hole behind it's vessel if it needs to. (then again, im not sure if that's the case with this one, since this comes from STO, which is a game where any ship can become the next planet killer if the player wants, so this one might be unlikely and non-canon)
In short, rom ships are beasts. This might be due to the fact that the writers thought of the old roman empire when writing the romulan star empire. After all, the romulan has some old latin on it, giving more of the impression of the romulans being rome soldiers.

I think based on their appearances in TNG, regardless of tonnage, the D’Deridex does really seem on parity with the Galaxy capability-wise. It’s rarely treated as an overwhelming foe; maybe just one that might win 60/40 vs a Galaxy (and notably that’s the pre-dominion war galaxy). After all, Picard regarded a battle between 2 D’Deridex versus the Enterprise D and 4 K’Vort Heavy Birds of Prey as a mutually destructive battle. Starfleet has been repeatedly shown to have simply superior technology to most other powers in nearly all areas other than cloaking, so the difference in size isn’t necessarily an indication of the difference power.

  • @jhmcd2

Assuming these were full cannon concepts, it would still explain why a Galaxy class starship would be effective against one. Recall, the Enterprise and Tamalok were always at a stand off, meaning they were evenly matched. The Warbirds was just lacked any serious maneuverability. If the warbirds didn't finish the ship off with the first alpha strike (which now that I think about it was used in TNG), the Galaxy class could easily out maneuver the thing.

In Star Trek Armada series the D'deridex can make use of most of your ideas and the Shield Inversion Beam allowing for refreshing shields after cloaking fixing that problem most cloakers in the game face (loosing shields to fire if detected before decloaking cycle is complete) or adding that layer of tactical tanking for smaller ships to take out the larger more dangerous vessels. I'm imaging the beam is unique to just Armada, but would be interesting to see against the Borg or Dominion, then again not everything can be cannonised eh?

i always wondered why gravimetric weaponry isnt used more. if you torpedo exploded into a singularity it might have more power than an explosion and would consume all mater and energy until it was gone, leaving the small singularity to evaporate via hawking radiation. Using a singularity as a power source would mean there is almost limitless power potential as the angular momentum of the actual singularly reaches infinity. Than along with the mass of the singularity would give it a perminat ability to shift the light away and appear as a black hole and not a ship.

FWIW, I think you are underestimating the relative volumes.
Excluding the engines, the following would seem to be true (based on comparing the images side-by-side in the video:
    1) Ignoring the engines, the D’deridex can be thought of as breaking down into six parts: head and neck, stern, two upper wings (port and starboard), and two lower wings. The Enterprise-D likewise, has a primary hull (saucer) and a secondary hull.
    2) The head of the D’deridex is about 2/3rds the length of the Ent-D’s saucer section, and maybe 5x the height. It’s much narrower. Overall it’s probably the size of the Ent-D’s saucer, and maybe the size of Ent-D’s saucer and secondary hull combined, not including the neck.
    3) Each wing of the D’deridex is about as wide as the saucer section, half again as deep as the saucer section and about as long as the saucer section. The difference in shape is a little deceptive, though, with the spine being a LOT longer. If I had to guess, I would say that at a minimum each wing is about 1.5 times the size of Ent-D’s saucer and secondary hull combined.
    4) The stern of the D’deridex is wider than the Ent-D’s secondary hull and a LOT taller. I’d guess the stern plus the neck are approaching the size of the Ent-D.
So, just eyeballing it, I get:
    - Head: 1 x Ent-D
    - Wings: 6 x Ent-D
    - Stern and neck: 1 x Ent-D
TOTAL: About 8x the size of the Ent-D.
I’ll point out that if you double something solid in all 3 dimensions (like a surface ship), the internal volume goes up by a factor of 8. In this case, it’s twice the length, twice the width, and three times the height. These are simple geometric solids, so you can’t just assume 2x2x3=12 times the volume, but I do think that my calculations above are, if anything, conservative. One could easily conclude that the D’deridex being 10x the volume of Enterprise-D is more or less correct.
So, does this matter? Maybe. Maybe not. Depends on a lot of factors not discussed.

Well, at first, Dominion phased polaron beams passed right through Alpha Quadrant deflector shields, allowing the Tal Shiar/Obsidian Order fleet of 40 to be cut to ribbons by 150 Jem'Hadar attack ships. That is 3.75 Dominion ships for every Alpha Quadrant ship, and recall three Jem'Hadar ships could tear apart a Galaxy Class with that polaron beam advantage. The Dominion was also pretty good at penetrating Romulan Cloaking devices.
But then the Federation improved their shield technology by the second battle of Ds9, rendering Dominion weapons no more potent than standard phasers or disruptors. I'm sure Starfleet shared this technology with the Romulans once they joined the war effort.
