February seems to be a really big month for desktop environment news because KDE Plasma is almost upon us with the release next week. GNOME has announced the beta release of GNOME 46. LXQt has dropped some big news that LXQt 2.0 is on its way. and there may be another distro already interested in System76's COSMIC desktop. We're also going to take a look at a few laptops coming on the marketing in a new Linux Hardware News segment. Valve is releasing more of their software as Open Source proving once again Valve is a great member of the community. Plus we got some news from the movie animation studio DreamWorks and what they are doing with Open Source. All of this and more on this episode of This Week in Linux, Your Source for Linux GNews!

I loved that it was sort of scatter brained as that is how my mind works when geeking out.

As for LXQT, I ran that in Lubuntu 20.04 (LTS) for a couple of years and found it noticeably snappy as well as efficient with memory on an older system (Intel Skylake, i5-6500 with HD 530 and 8GB RAM)
I'm back on GNOME currently but will still be checking out LXQT 2.0 and KDE Plasma 6.0 when they are generally available on a stable distro, as they both continue to be decent environments with significant developments and something to be familiar with, should I find myself running more QT-based applications.
Plasma 6 - the "cube" is coming back!!! Yeah baby, yeah!!!!!!!! ❤

I've switched back and forth between LXQt and xfce distros on an ancient dual core laptop for the past ~5 years. I've settled on Linux Lite for the moment, but now I can't wait to try some distro with LXQt 2.0 on it. Hopefully major distros update their LXQt spins soon, because I'm too much of a Linux noob to just install a DE from scratch.

I just got a BMAX Laptop from Temu on a %75 off and I just installed Linux Mint.
I tried Windows 11 and just switched to Linux Mint cinnamon 21.

Watching This now KDE Neon 5.27 can't wait for Plasma 6... I Only use KDE Neon and or Solus Plasma but don't like to wait for Updates on Solus sometimes...
Thanks for commenting @teknogear1705 , I am curious about your KDE Neon usage. What are your thoughts on the FAQs where they say that KDE Neon is not a distro and that they are "only interested in KDE software." Does this concern you as a user?

In my opinion it's time for the KDE people to change their attitude towards Neon, this Schrödinger distro approach doesn't work.

Curious to see DE landscape by the year 2026, as in 2025 RedHat will drop X, and many will go along. So, the ancient DEs for X will lose popularity and we'll see replacements like Sway becoming the new thing ultimately. A new era.

Photopea.com it’s a webapp and it’s about 70%as good as Photoshop which is fantastic for me. To compare, GIMP is about 15% as good and that’s being generous. However, this is on the professional level. For the average user, GIMP is more than adequate

Wonky? It was a disaster🤣This average ho hum user, uses KDE neon with Wayland. Works like a charm. Easy to install, quick and very stable. Mister Alzheimer can I speak with you please?😜

I think plasma 6 is freaking dope! But I’m going to wait until Fedora has it before I run it full time

But you were also using it on Neon. Neon shouldn’t be used as a daily driver. I think it is worth trying it when Fedora ships it for sure

I explained what I meant by LX"cute" so people who didnt know Qt is pronounced "cute" will know why I would keep saying LXcute. rather than L-X-Q-T as the toolkit Qt is pronounced cute.
they Did it ... They broke Neon for the last six years I been saying that Neon was the best if the best but today i've been trying to put things back together and i've losing ... yesterday my system was running smooth as a baby's butt today i've been the Matador "Olay" KDE "Olay" ... Help Me what Distal out here is not giving up on X11??? ... Wayland really SBDD
X11 is going away, this is inevitable. The people maintaining X11 are not going to do so for much longer, they announced this. So Wayland is a necessity at some point, when that’s not clear but eventually for sure. KDE Plasma didn’t drop X11 support though, just changed the default to Wayland. You can do a logout and on the login screen you can change it in the bottom left.
I've seen that... Thanks for hitting me back @@michael_tunnell It's not just Wayland everything in this update is short of perfect... In order to restart I have to go to command line and type in reboot... In both x11 and Wayland...
In command line after I do an auto remove things get real stupid my Application Dashboard vanishes My Bluetooth won't enable and I lose several wedges on my desktop oh yeah did I say my shutdown/restart buttons don't work and and UA-cam audio lags, my browser and vlc freezes up I am Soooo Grateful for TimeShift ... i for one can't wait till the update for this upgrade is out

Glad to hear you’re trying Wayland and having a better experience. Wayland used to be very underwhelming but I also experienced a lot of improvement over the years. 😎
As for Neon, this is exactly why I tell people not to use it as it’s for testing and is often very very buggy during these kinds of upgrades. This has happened many times and every major upgrade there is always something like this.
