The lore is some of my all time favorite game storytelling and worldbuilding. I even remember the first time I tried to inhale a Scarfy and it morphed into a terrifying eyeball mouth monster. Kirby is such a hidden gem in the Nintendo franchise that I haven’t seen much streamers play any of them at all. The lore itself is what makes Kirby so interesting. A small pink boy is the strongest fighter in all of Nintendo and is only rivaled somewhat to others in his own universe.
@@coltonwilkie241 See you'd think so, and then you let Shinya "Draws Eldritch Abominations in his spare time" Kumazaki head the franchise and add little text blurbs throughout the game, whether in pause screens or figurines, and it takes Kirby to an entire new level of fun.
@@coltonwilkie241 Kirby is a positive reincarnation of the void, a god of all reality who creates positive or negative vessels. Most of kirbys supporting cast is a reincarnation of void, including Gooey who is the most evil being of all time but is literally too dumb to actually be a threat, and Zero, a biblically accurate Angel who’s attempted to bring the world to null twice. In this game, your sidekick is the second half of the perfect lifeform, who’s powers allowed humanity to transcend into the dream state. However it’s slain by the morpho Knight, a grim reaper who consumes the universes most powerful foes. And he’s secretly been the butterfly from the intro of almost every Kirby game going all the way back to the Gameboy!
@@coltonwilkie241 Everything Salutations said is accurate, though I’d say “most of the supporting cast” is a bit of a stretch and call it a decent chunk, and the ascended life forms can’t be confirmed as humans. They’re some kind of alien race-might be humans, might not be. Who knows. (I’m inclined to believe that they’re not, but that’s just me) Kirby lore is real and it is DEEP.
It might be nostalgia but for some reason, the atmosphere in Crystal Shards for the N64 is like my favorite atmosphere in any game ever. Very simplistic gameplay so I can understand someone not enjoying it, but there's just something amazing about the universe Kirby lives in that's so whimsical and fun, but yet hides a deeper dark secret that I love. Their first jump to what felt like 3D although it technically was somewhere between 2D and 3D really captured that, especially with the evil villain taking over your friends. If Dunky was serious about delving into other Kirby games that would be a good one.
you know this game must be something else when there is 0 sarcasm from dunkey whatsoever. Nothing but gen uine praise and appreciation for effort put into this game.
Kirbys got a special place in my heart. Dreamland was the first videogame I ever played. Kinda funny to think now how hard it was for child me. Glad to hear he’s still knocking out hits!
my first game was star stacker for gameboy colour, but my first full game was super star ultra. Since then, Kirby has become one of my favourite franchises ever
When Dunkey, the guy who has played a million platformers and also Balan Wonderland, likes Kirby, a game franchise designed to be an easy, baby-friendly platformer, you know something interesting's going on.
Kirby games are on the easier end of the spectrum and I think that's ok. In a world that is increasingly getting dominated by games that want to be "as hard as possible" it's nice to just... have a Kirby game sometimes. You know... a non-simulation type game that squeezes out fun and proves that difficulty itself is not what makes a game inherently "good" or "worth playing".
Things go in cycles. In the early days you had super hard games, so games started getting easier and easier as gamers felt like the difficulty was so high it wasn't fun. As time went on, though, devs overshot the mark, and games became easier to the point of being boring. So naturally they started slowly ramping it back up. I feel like we're close to the overshoot, but now there's games to fill both spaces, so maybe we're finally approaching a happy medium.
I love these games man, I played the final boss on the second day of release without spoiling and that shit made me year. I’m so thankful this game is good and holy shit the ost
My introduction to Kirby was Kirby: Super-Star Ultra and Boy did I love that game and play a lot of it. Makes me want to break out my DS and relive the Good-Ol' Days
I love how, unlike in return to dreamland, triple deluxe, and star allies, the main gimmick of Forgotten Land doesn't make portions of the game super easy (or the whole game in the case of star allies). I also think this is one of the reasons why people love Planet Robobot so much.
Definitely. My main problem with Triple Deluxe, while very good overall, is how the Hypernova sections are forced on you, taking away your copy ability, and all you have to do is press the button to suck everything up. It makes the game less dynamic. In Planet Robobot, your armor keeps the copy ability you already had and just makes Kirby even more fun to control. Fantastic game.
The super abilities in RtDL bother me far less than the corresponding gimmicks in 3DX and Star Allies because the easy part you tear through is alway immediately followed by a tense autoscroller challenge capped off with a miniboss at the end.
@@discountchocolate4577 Also true. Though if I'm being honest, I kinda liked the partners in SA. Maybe because I was really hoping for the partner system to come back after Super Star Ultra. But I'm thinking maybe they should have limited it to 2, unless you were playing co-op. Also the difficulty should have been better scaled in the event of 3-4 players
@@wesreleases6346 Yeah Robobot really is the gold standard for how to implement one-off gimmicks in kirby games. So much that I don't want to say one-off, because I'm really hoping the Robobot armor comes back
@@franklinbadge1215 For people who haven't been playing Kirby games for at least 20 years, Star Allies brings very little new to the table. But I also get the dreadful feeling it'll be a long time before we see another Kirby game where Adeline, Rick, and Gooey are all playable characters on the same tier as Dedede, Bandana Dee and Meta Knight.
Re: the surprisingly meaty combat -- Kirby Super Star really impressed me once I learned all of Kirby's abilities had movesets and specific damage numbers and stuff. The fusion of simplicity and detail in that game's powers can be felt in Sakurai's Smash Bros series and the brilliant Kid Icarus: Uprising.
I think the introduction of upgradable copy abilities was necessary for this game, mainly because it loses out on the full movesets for each ability by going 3D. Since it’s 3D movement, you can’t have the directional inputs like they used to, so abilities had to become diverse in a new kind of way.
I got this last weekend for my kids and they've almost got it beat this weekend. It's a neat as heck game to watch from a background perspective as well. Definitely think they did a good job on this one.
My favorite Kirby games are Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot both for the 3DS. Super fun games with amazing 3D depth that more than earned all the praise it received.
Honestly Planet Robobot gave me a similar feeling to what Dunkster describes at the beginning. I hadn't played since Amazing Mirror and Robobot felt it was a great game and all, just not super ambitious or anything like I was expecting
I’ve always liked Kirby as a character/aesthetic, but I always felt keeping it 2d really limited the series. The “Mario 3D Land/World” style platforming fits Kirby better than Mario I think and I hope it stays this way for a while. It’s also nice having a game my girlfriend actively wants to play solo and/or co-op with me. And the ending is so goofily epic that it brought tears to my eyes. Obligatory dunkey video reference.
Yes, very much a "3d land" treatment but further refined with stages that have way better flow. I wish for a Planet Robobot sequel with the same design aesthetics
Easily my favorite Kirby game now. My interest in the series was starting to wane before this game, but this game really got me going and hyped up for more. I loved the new mechanics, the treatment of Dedede and Meta Knight, and the presentation just...mwah. Can't wait for the next one.

Hi UA-cam, thinking of adding that dislike counter back, or at least community captions? 🤔 Oh I forgot, you’re using a USB steering wheel, you can’t do these things nvm
I'm so glad to see so many enjoying the new Kirby game, even people who aren't fans of the franchise. I was a little disappointed that there were fewer abilities available but then they drop the upgrade blueprints on you and all of a sudden everything changes.
I played a few Kirby games before but I genuinely didn't know Kirby and the forgotten land was the first truly 3D kirby game. Which is kind of shocking because it feels so natural, it's like that's how Kirby games are meant to be played. The copy abilities im 3d just work so damn well, as well as Kirby now being able to actually aim were he spits out instead of just forward. Dodging attacks in 3D is a completely new experience. The areas now feel like they connect together to one level which together make up one big world. I would've never guessed that I'd love this game that much and I hope we get more games like this one.
You know Kirby wasn't always sunshine and rainbows. People forget that the best Kirby game, "Nightmare in Dreamland" had a damn boss rush as a mandatory level and then a secret mode where you got to play as Meta Knight but if you died 1 time, aka take 3 instances of damage, you had to start all the way back at the beginning of the game
What I like most about Kirby is he's literally a baby cosmic horror that has killed gods and will continue to kill gods until he can get a proper undisturbed nap time.
He is, but he's also just a sweet and soft friend that likes tasty food and playing and he's So Pure and Good. ;__; ....sorry, I got something in my eye there.
Overall I've always thought Kirby Superstar Ultra was the best in the entire franchise. I also really like Kirby64 for having the most abilities with the element combining and Magic Mirror for the 4 player co-op. I preordered Forgotten Land and still haven't gotten around to playing it but I'm really looking forward to it now!

Astel would 100% fit in as a Kirby villain and vice versa
Kirby is just Alexander Potman, sucking up their fallen enemies to gain their power
I base my purchases off of Dunkey reviews, haven't been disappointed yet. Getting a good dunk review should be the gold-standard for game development.

@@coltonwilkie241 You must be new to Kirby
Kirby is one of the cutest eldritch horrors
Who knows. (I’m inclined to believe that they’re not, but that’s just me)
Kirby lore is real and it is DEEP.
FromSoftware really outdid themselves this time with Kirby, 10 out of 10, game of the year.
IMO Nintendo’s new IP Elden Ring is still better, but I could just be biased.

Kirbys got a special place in my heart. Dreamland was the first videogame I ever played. Kinda funny to think now how hard it was for child me. Glad to hear he’s still knocking out hits!
Dreamland was my first game as well. Love it. It’s a gorgeous GB title and honestly still aged well.
my first game was star stacker for gameboy colour, but my first full game was super star ultra. Since then, Kirby has become one of my favourite franchises ever
The part where King Dedede discovered the location of the Elden Ring had me sobbing. What a beautiful game.
Still left speechless about that one note in front of a vending machine revealing that Masked Dedede IS King Dedede. Truly masterful writing.
Kirby games will never be hard because Kirby is simply too powerful
@@yoshistrings Someone hasn't attempted the True Arenas.....
Kirby is more powerful than goku ge can't die or cut nor bleed. Sadly

I liked Star Allies personally, but I’m happy he liked Forgotten Land. It’s truly a masterpiece in the franchise
While it is arguably weaker than some other entries its still solid
