Hilary.........you're a wonderful instructor......I'd love to take lessons from you....I'm a old guy in my 80's and just learning to play banjo; so far, it's been slow going..........too damn slow in fact!! me fingers are not cooperating with my mind ! HaH .
just beautiful! I've never heard this song before today, found Dan Tyminski doing it and you and love it! I'm a long time banjo player myself, trying to get it back after laying it down 30+ years.
Hi Hilary, this is an amazing rendition of this old, old murder ballad. Also amazing is the fact that this gent didn't have any morals. He must have come from wealth to have "burgundy wine" and not just some peasant swill, not to mention a sabre, also a symbol of status. But if they were lovers, why would he not just abandon her after doing the you know what to her, as was often the case from wealthy squires in those days (?). Alas, this gent met his doom for murder of that " dear little girl, whose name was Rose Connelly".(Connlee?). Who could not love a gal with a name like that? Tim O'Brien's version is also quite touching, with his Mandolins. Thanks, my friend, for this banjo version. If I ever get my banjolin finished, I will play some version of this great old song at a jam, no doubt. Peace, dear lady-- great video and thanks. Bob in Montana
Hilary I love your videos . I play guitar and mandolin by ear, but could never wrap my head around the banjo. My wife suggested I buy a banjo and try to learn to play. I've watched other videos, but still no good. Since watching your videos everything is starting to click. I'm in my late sixties and am enjoying learning and actually making progress. Thanks you for your instructional talent.
I'm afraid I can't bear to listen to the words of murder ballads any more, but I love the tunes, and you are such a good player I just had to listen to this ;)
This helped me so much! I started playing 3 finger last year and just this week started reading Wayne Erbsen's Ignoramus book on clawhammer but couldn't figure the timing out on this til I watched your video! Thank you so much.
I would like to see someone try and turn this into a rock song like Thin Lizzy did with "Whiskey in to Jar"(Later even covered by the heavy metal band Metallica). Whiskey in the Jar is about a 300 to 400 year-old Irish folk song and makes a great rock song.
@@HH-hj6mx I see in the comments you highly recommend the Bart Reiter Standard. I've been interested in getting one. What do you like about it so much? Did you seriously travel to Kansas just to buy one?
Hi @@bryandovbergman5654. I was on tour in Kansas and then happened to end up at Mass Street music and tried. I think you can probably find it somewhere else too. But that music store was amazing. I love the sound of the Bart Reiter, solid, good tone!
@@HH-hj6mx cool. When I looked up a review of the Vega senator on youtube, a video of you trying it out comes up. A lot of people on banjohangout.com say Vegas are over priced compared to something like a Bart Reiter (boutique banjo). How would you say the Vega senator measures up to the Bart Reiter standard?
He poisons her, stabs her and drowns her in THAT order. Very good job. Heather. I usually play it on a fretless, key of G, and with a three-fingered old-time style of picking. Sounds great either way.
You sure is purdy , and with a voice and talent like Yours can dance possum up a gum tree. Serious , being married and old enough to be You Pa and Grandpa I have to discipline Myself not to be pining for You. I love Your Music and Your Husband and Children are gifted to have You in their lives.
"It's also a waltz" cracked me up

You've a lovely voice and pared with a good melody on the five; well done,
My grandma sang and finger picked this song often on the guitar.
Poison, Stabbing and then drowning ....wow just like that

Really enjoyed that, very lovely but you scared the hell out of me with all the murder talk.
It's real pleasure to discover and learn banjo with you, you are a very good teacher :-)
This video, when used in conjunction with your tab book, makes learning these songs a straightforward endeavor- thank you!

This was fantastic :) just bought a new deering
Is this the same chords as the iron mountain string band version?? It sounds like it but I could be mistaken. The energy in that song is amazing
From England - I think you are really great!
Nicely Done .

Thanks Jeremy!!
On Irish recordings (for example, the Chieftains), it is referred to as a Mazurka rather than a waltz.
Bravo
Very nice
I'm so happy to see a female banjo player, I love and support your excellent skill!
Great song, beautiful lady 😍👍👍👍
Love it
Mighty fine
Check out Radie Peat's (Lankums) version of this; an modern Irish slant!

Nice
is it a coincedance that u remind me alot of ed from raising arizona and thats the song she sings
Great song but I prefer it as an instrumental. What’s with murder lyrics😳.Very similarly to, “Lincoln and Liberty”.

me too!
How do I get your banjo book for beginners for frailing
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🧡
Your husband is a lucky man!
Is that Piper from Orange is the New Black?
ha ha, I've gotten that before!

Do you have any tabs pls? 🙏
It's also a waltz! Lol!
Not a million miles from "Lincoln and Liberty / Rosin the Beau'.
