  • Fencing is actually 3 different events. Here's how to tell them apart.

    At the first modern Olympic Games in the summer of 1896, nine sports encompassing 43 events were played. Of those original nine, only five have appeared at every Summer Olympics since. One of those sports is fencing.
    Fencing is split up into three different events based on the weapon used. There's the foil, epee, and sabre. They each have their own set of rules, and their roots can be traced back centuries.
    Vox.com is a news website that helps you cut through the noise and understand what's really driving the events in the headlines. Check out www.vox.com

    I think one of the major barriers to watching fencing on TV, honestly, is that it's just really hard to see the blades. They're really thin and we're watching them from a distance through a camera, all while looking at body, arm, and feet to try to determine who has the attack.
    Seriously, I think that at highest levels, blades should light up like lightsabers. That's not even my inner fanboy talking, I genuinely think that would make the sport easier to follow.

      After having some experience with fencing, you’ll slowly see the blades and the movement. Just look at the reflection of the blade from the light. Also, there is something that is lightsaber fencing, search it up. :D

      @@beandispenser6971 It doesn't but there are many who try to get their weapon as light as possible by cutting down on everything from bell guard material to the weight of the grip and some even go as far as having a preferred groove on their blade as some grooves have a better center of gravity. Every detail counts.

    So my coach teaches Fencing theory at a nearby high school. He brought his midterms for all of us fencers with at least 4 years of experience to grade. I was grading one that just killed me. "If the basic forward movement is an advance, what is the basic backward movement?" the kid's answer? "Disadvance."
    "What the three main sports played in the olypmpics?" Poker, foil, and sabre.
    I had fun last night/

    If you want to follow a saber match, don't watch the blades. Watch the feet; because of how easy it is to hit an opponent with a saber weapon all the action is actually going on in the footwork. PS Epee rules.

      qthelight Precision? Paha! Pahahahaha! I've seen you foil-eez! You guard your chest by laying your arm across it. When you can hit the enemy's thumb on a moving hand with a flick around the guard from 2 meters away, then we can talk about precision!

    Great video! As a long-time saber fencer, it is amazing to see fencing becoming more and more mainstream. I remember four years ago it was so obscure... the rare broadcast of an event was primitive, with underfunded video technology and amateur announcers. Just today, I was chatting with a PE teacher at my high school (who has zero experience with fencing) about the mens foil team event at the Olympics, and she was talking about how exciting it was to watch. I couldn't have imagined that conversation ever happening a year ago. The same goes for this video... fencing has always been sort of a hidden gem, and now people are starting to discover it by the masses. Thanks for the exposure to the sport, Vox!

    I used to fence many years back, for a period of 7 years. Was formally trained in Foil and Epee, but did try Sabre as well. And yes, the video was accurate about how we all tried the flick. Of course, there were many tricks up any fencer's sleeves too that the video didn't cover, such as stop hit, feint attack or the Flèche. I personally was exceptionally good at stop hits while extremely risky for foil since I would not have the right of way, but it works beautifully many occasions as a last-minute surprise attack. But now, I have stopped training because of my slower reaction (due to lack of regular training and also with age I guess), unable to set aside time consistently to go for training as well as the cost associate with the sport. But yeah, I had many fun moments with fencing.

    In Germany, Fraternity Students still duel with sharp Sabre,today. Either to settle disputes, to show your devotion to your fraternity or just for the adrenaline kick. This type of fencing is quite different to Olympic fencing, but also very interesting to watch. It's called academic Fencing. Just something to add to the Video.
    Cool video, enjoyed it!

  • @florpyjohnson9531

    just wanna clear this out, at 0:37 the foil and epee grips are used in both types of fencing. you have the pistol grip, the one shown as foil, and the french grip, shown as epee. the more advanced foil fencers use a french grip, while most beginners use a pistol grip. when i first started fencing, i was in foil and they had both grips. eventually, we got to pick our style, and i chose sabre. i have been doing sabre for a while now, so yeah.

    • @joeblair9350
      @joeblair9350 5 років тому

      Florpy Johnson that's not true if you look at top foil fencers they nearly all use pistol grips

    • @florpyjohnson9531
      @florpyjohnson9531 5 років тому

      when i first started fencing, i started in foil because that was what you were required to start in. on what, my third day? my coach was showing a person who had been doing foil for a while now the french grip. maybe we just have different stuff here, but im just saying that's what happened to me.

    • @joeblair9350
      @joeblair9350 5 років тому

      Florpy Johnson yeah well basically all the Olympic foilists are using pistol grips

    • @lewribaedi5997
      @lewribaedi5997 5 років тому

      You can use either grip in either weapon but yeah, top level foilists only use pistol grip as it much easier to control accurately. Epee it's more mixed, as the potential extra reach of French grip is very useful in Epee.

    Fencer with 10 years' competitive experience here. According to the instruction I've received from multiple coaches, the foil and sabre have a right-of-way system because they come from martial traditions, where the intent is to fight and win on the battlefield or in a duel to the death. Epee evolved from the "first blood" dueling tradition.
