There are a lot of similarities between Avatar: The Last Airbender and Game of Thrones when you start to break them both down. However, the endings of the two popular fantasy series couldn’t be more different. We decided to explore what lessons GoT could have taken from A:TLA in our video here: ua-cam.com/video/wvZMZeTO4wQ/v-deo.html
Wait wait wait. So the energy bending was given to aang first? I need to rewatch avatar to see when this happens because I think I remember aang seeing the lion turtle waaay before the final battle
Mind tackling this Enquire? *WHERE ARE THE LIGHTNING BENDERS?* *_This due to the fact that Fire-Benders can’t actually bend lightning, they can only generate and redirect it._* With *Lightning Generation,* the moment the lightning leaves the fingertips the Bender has no control over it _(a fact Iroh confirms)._ Also with *Lightning Redirection,* even the slightest mistake can be potentially fatal to the one redirecting it _(again Iroh confirms this)._ Other reasons for why they can’t bend lightning are: - They can only fire it from the fingertips - They can only take lightning from an outside source if it’s fired at them and they catch it with their fingertips. Also it usually takes a few seconds to fire a single bolt _(imagine how most fights with Lightning Generation would end if their opponent just blasted them instead of standing there, heck, Amon didn’t and even though Lightning Bolt Zolt had every advantage Amon was able to effectively dodge)._ *If you're still confused imagine it like this;* A Water-Bender could pull Water from a jar to their right make it do a full 360 degree turn around them and then put it in an empty jar to their left without once making physical contact with the water or jars, or even so much as moving from their spot and could likely do the same with Blood & Plants, as could an Earth-Bender with Earth, Metal or Lava. But a Fire-Bender couldn't do so with Lightning, say there were two Tesla coils, one charged and one not, a Fire-Bender who knew both Lightning Generation and Lightning Redirection would at the very least have to touch the charged coil to transfer the Lightning to the uncharged one. And if you wanna get even more basic, a Fire-Bender couldn't perform a simple push & pull with Lightning, but P'Li could probably pull both of with her Combustion due to her ability to make her beam curve, and it's debatable whether or not Combustion is a type of Bending Art or just a technique. Another way to look at it would be to say that there's an entire Martial Art consisting of two moves, even Boxing, one of the most basic Martial Arts, has more than two moves. Plus there's also the fact that unlike every other sub-skill, Lightning Generation it isn’t explained in a way that properly ties it to fire or it’s elemental connection to Fire, such as Earth benders been able to bend Metal by bending the little bits of Earth in it, all it was given was the nickname “The Cold-Blooded Fire”, if you use the same explanation Iroh gave but switch the word 'Fire’ for ‘Air’ and change the nickname to the “The Wrath of Air” _(clearing the mind of all emotion includes love and compassion)_ it could just as easily written off as an Air-Bending technique _(or if there was no named element or nickname, that every bender could make lightning)_ and given the way it describe very few people would surprised if everybody _(even Non-Benders)_ could pull off Lightning Redirection. To help illustrate, here's Iroh's explanation of Lightning Generation with the singular use of the word 'fire' _(in the word 'firebender')_ removed: _There is energy all around us. The energy is both yin and yang; positive energy and negative energy. Only a select few benders can separate these energies. This creates an imbalance. The energy wants to restore balance and in a moment the positive and negative energy come crashing back together. You provide release and guidance, creating lightning._ - *Iroh* And his unedited explination of Lightning Redirection: _If you let the energy in your own body flow, the lightning will follow it. You must create a pathway from your fingertips up your arm to the shoulder, then down into the stomach. The stomach is the source of energy in your body; it is called the sea of chi. From your stomach you direct it up again and out the other arm. The stomach detour is critical; you must not let the lightning pass through your heart, or the damage could be deadly._ - *Iroh* Now compare those explanations to an explanation of how Metal-Bending works, especially if you never use the word Earth or any equivalent, or Lava-Bending, maybe try to explain Plant-Bending without mention Water. The explanations, would at the very least, start to sound off. Also, consider Sozin’s Comet. Whenever it appears all Fire-Bender techniques are amplified to their zenith, to the point that even basic techniques create ginormous pillars of fire, but at best, the lightning fired was only slightly larger than normal. Even though with the comet around, Iroh was able to blast a giant hole in the near impenetrable Walls of Ba Sing Se and Ozai’s plan to use it to obliterate the near Pangea sized continent that is the Earth Kingdom was considered do-able by everybody. And it’s not a case of the power been condensed either, otherwise Aang would have exploded when he redirected it, because there is no way that the human body could contain that much power _(a human would be lucky to survive been struck by a regular lightning bolt, imagine a Super-charged one)_ and even though he’s the Avatar, that doesn’t make him invulnerable, past Avatars have been killed. This is further compounded by the fact that when Zuko mucked up his Lightning Redirection on the very same day when protecting Katara from Azula, he not only didn't die, but was completely fine after a quick Healing session from Katara And without Lightning-Benders there is no balance of the elements, for Water would beat Fire which beats Air whom overpowers Earth, but Earth gets eroded by water with only the most durable rocks been able to stand up to it, most rivers rely on flora to keep the waters in check. Plus no Lightning-Benders means that if a Water-Bender went around claim that Water was the superior element with what was already said in this paragraph as well as pointing out that it has more sub-skills than any other element _(Blood, Plant, Healing & Spirit),_ what response could he get that would be a solid answer? Even scientifically and mythological speaking fire and lightning are two completely different things. In classical mythology the only times fire and lightning are associated with each other are with the gods *Xolotl* _(Aztec)_ and *Agni* _(Rigvedic)_ and in terms of elements lightning is either viewed as its own thing or is part of quintessence, air or water _(usually via rain)._ In science, even though fire and lightning may both be forms of plasma and give off heat, that’s where the similarities end. Fire is created by a chemical reaction of two gases _(usually oxygen and a fuel gas)_ in which the atoms of the source break their bonds with each other via heat and recombine with available oxygen atoms in the air, lightning occurs when there is enough electrical energy to break molecules apart and then separate electrons from the atoms. Another way to look at it would be to ask if a Water-Bender could bend Mercury, a liquid metal, or could an Earth-Bender bend an Ice-cube, or why can Water-Benders bend Ice or Earth-Bender bend Mercury, there's more at play with bending than mere States of Matter. Plus in Iroh’s explanation of Lightning Generation involves the gathering of negative energy i.e. electrons, and positive energy i.e. positrons _(the antimatter of electrons)_ which when they clash with each other would create nothing but gamma ray photons _(and maybe W and Z bosons)_ and even if they were kept separate, dark lightning _(yes, that is a real thing, look it up)_ would be fired at the bender which would again get them hit with gamma rays, meaning that someone who uses Lightning Generation as often as Azula would soon suffer from radiation poisoning, tumors all over the body and cancer. _(That ‘might’ of contributed to her insanity at the end of the series)_ Also, it conflicts with Iroh's Fire-Bending explanation in the First episode of taking in breath, making it energy, which becomes Fire. It was to emphasise the importance of control of breath a.k.a breathing exercises in Fire-Bending, this not only matches up with the way fire is generated in real-life, but also makes sense when you realise that the way Fire-Benders move in-series is a lot more energetic than even other Benders. And this also makes sense as it follows a basic real-world principle of the human body turning movement energy into heat energy, the logic in-show being that the body's heat will be used to make fire. *But this raises two issues:* 1. While the importance of breathing are repeatedly brought up throughout the show, turning it into energy isn't. So if you want to use it to help explain why Lightning is a Fire-Bending thing, then it's kind of funny that the writers would expect the majority of fans to remember that one line from 1 1/2 years ago _(First episode came out February 21, 2005. Iroh's Lightning lesson first aired in June 2006)_ especially without a proper call-back. 2. Iroh's explanation fails to match up with how Heat Energy is converted into Electrical Energy in the real world. Iroh says it involves a clash between Positive and Negative Energies, when in realty it involves a continuous loop between hot and cold areas via piece of metal in processes known as the Seebeck Effect, the Peltier Effect & the Thomson Effect. Even if you substituted the Hot & Cold for Positive & Negative and the Metal for the Bender, the energy would still have to go through a loop, not a clash.
*I have considered many reasons for why proper Lightning-Bending has been left out of the series and it is easy to debunk every one of them:* First of all, in the case of whether there were Lightning-Benders or Lightning-Bending was a sub-skill of Fire-bending: 1. In TAS if lightning-bending were used for the Fire Nation the villains could have been seen as too powerful, if against them then not a real threat, but this could have been overcome with some creative story writing. 2. In LOK it would made those who were Lightning-Benders far less vulnerable to the Equalists electric weapons, but then they could just use gas bombs filled with sleeping gas or maybe poison _(they did have gas based weaponry which they used for at least smokescreens and wore gas masks)_ And for the matter of just having Lightning-benders in the show: 1. It could have upset the shows Eastern portrayal. But again could have been overcome with some creative story writing or just do what you did with Republic City, create a western city with slight amount of Eastern influence. 2. Any sub-skills that a Lightning-Bender would have would be too similar to other elements sub-skills i.e. Nerve-Bending been similar to Blood-Bending or Magnetism been a crude form of Metal-bending. But this would have just enforced Guru Pathik’s point that the separation of the elements was just an illusion _(and before you say that there was no Lightning Chakra, it is quite possible that it was just renamed)._ 3. There were no Lightning-Benders popping up after Harmonic Convergence. But considering that Harmonic Convergence didn’t cause Benders to pop-up before any of the previous times it happened, plus the fact that no-one knew why it caused people to suddenly become Air-Benders, it’s not really a valid argument due to the fact that just too little is known about it. 4. The Avatar never Lightning-Bent. This holds very little validation, imagine what would have happened to air-bending if someone killed Aang before he had any kids, it would be highly unlikely that the next Avatar would even learn Air-Bending _(you can’t always expect someone like Zaheer to be around, or that you’d meet them)_ and after a few generations it wouldn’t be surprising if Air-Bending stopped showing up in the Avatar state. Also, the Avatar could have easily ended up as just a Fire-Bender with some Spirit powers if the Fire Nation won the Hundred Year War _(multiple episode throughout TLA clearly showed or even out right stated that the Fire Nation believed themselves to possess the superior element and were content with completely wiping out all other forms of Bending, if not entirely destroying Every. Other. Nation!)_ 5. Because Fire-benders can perform Lightning Generation, there couldn’t have been any Lightning-Benders. Considering that the world of Avatar does some pretty surprising things for the sake of keeping balance, it could have given Fire-Benders a lightning based technique if something happened to all the Lightning-benders i.e. lost their bending or were all killed. 6. There is no season for Lightning-Benders. While it is true that all of the calendar seasons have been taken up, there are still the tropical seasons and most thunderstorms happen during the wet season. With all of this considered, the only question that remains is: *Where are the Lightning Benders?*
Iambadatnaming i think Avatar is going to be one of those series that will never truly die. 500 years form now when man is on mars people will still be shouting fus roh dha and debating which of the four elements are the best. that’s just the mark skyrim and avatar has left on the world. and maybe halo but that kinda got stabbed in the ass shot in the foot and kicked in the balls after halo 5.
Yeah, while watching Korra and seeing all the power plant workers lightning bending, I couldn't help but recall Iroh's explanation of what is required to use it. I was like "Damn, these blue collar, 9-5ers must really have shit figured out!" Like, why couldn't ya just have fire benders working boilers go generate steam power? So dumb.
you missed a few important ones: Earth: Sand bending Fire: Fire Healing (Seen in Korra Book 2), Gas/Smoke bending (Fire Lord Sozin used it when he was helping Roku stop the volcano.)
One thing that gets glossed over a lot : Fire Lord Sozin showed the ability to siphon away heat and send it into the air. (S3:E6-The Avatar and the Fire Lord). A fire bender can possibly freeze an area by redistributing heat energy.
You have a point! If extremely skilled firebenders could take away heat from somthing like lava, there’s no real reason they couldn’t go beyond and just make a cold spot by moving the thermal energy somewhere else. The could potentially freeze a area just like a waterbender could and by focusing on a target could potentially shut down weaker firebenders! The boiling rock prison used freezing containers to prevent firebenders from firebending, firebenders who learn this “heat bending” could do the same thing without the container. And Sozin did this trick to lava during the NIGHT when firebenders are weakened, imagine what he can do under the noon sun.
@@theberrby6836 You are not far from the truth. The first airbenders learnt how do bend air by studying and learning from the flying bison. Who controlled air to fly and could airbend with their mouth as an outlet. Just as earthbenders originally learnt from Badger moles who used earthbending to dig tunnels. Firebenders learnt and received their abilities from the dragons and waterbenders learnt from the moon itself, pushing and pulling the water.
@@lolzguyl actually all that shit got changed in the legend of Korra, they say it was the lion turtles that gave humans bending. A lot less cool in my opinion
@@lucario2able @Jonathan Jimenez If you go to HelloFutureMe's channel, he gave a theory as to who were the original benders, that I agree with.... He goes on to theorize that yes, the lion turtles gave man the ability to use the 4 elements, however, they did not teach them how to BEND them. You can see that in the Avatar Wan story in the Legend of Korra. The Fire users were only shooting fire like a flame thrower, really. They were not bending. Man learned the artistry to manipulating the elements from the original benders: Air had the flying bison, water had the moon, earth the badger moles, and fire learned from the dragons. Turtles gave the power, the original benders taught them how to use it efficiently.
I disagree, I think still think it's really cool though. The world doesn't grow from stone to metal, metal is refined. They made the world metal. The world (more specifically their city) became made of metal from them
When Hama taught Katara how to take water from plants I’m kind of surprised (then again not because it’s a kids show) no one has done that to a person. Water benders have the ability to rip water out of someone’s body and instantly kill them. Combustion bending is similar but there is still the lag time to blow them up. Earth benders, in theory, could strip minerals from someone’s body which would cause immediate cardiac arrest due to muscles not being able to function. Zaheer did the air thing but a strong enough bender could counter that with the time them have before passing out. I’m weirdly focusing on the instant death techniques I know.
Well.. Think about gathering all their water and simply drowning them. Air benders can simply cut folks. Hell, carry a blowpipe and 'pierce' the enemy with strong enough air. Fire has the capability to be refined into torches. They can make literally beam swords that can melt through nearly anything. Then you got earth.. Love metal bending sure. But im going with simply steel wires. Lotta nonsense you can feel with webs of those. And kill and manipulate.. I too question the darkside of this series..
That's why I don't consider them so much important. Bloodbending is way harder than just controlling water within a person, since it's not simply water, that's why we know of only of five people who could do it.
But the difficulty in metal bending can't even be compared to sand bending. When sand benders bend, the sand is still earth (ground) and is very easy to sense. Metal is refines greatly and is very hard to detect and control the earth which is spread out in it. Another way to say it: Pure earth has 100% bendable particles per square inch (BPpsi), sand has 60-80% BPpsi (air displacement), while metal has an estimate of 5-10% BPpsi. Even with more primitive metals that have a higher BPpsi, it took one of the strongest earth benders in history to develop/discover a successful bend technique. After the technique has been learned, it does become easier to teach others to successfully bend metal. We see this in tLoK series, as metal bending becomes the standard for advanced law enforcement.
Aang used a sort of “Sound bending” every time he was calling Appa with that whistle, In fact he projected the sound of the whistle using his airbending
I feel like you overlooked sand bending and swamp bending EDIT: I considered the sub-bending/advanced bending to be practices that most of the benders don't use. Since most water benders don't control the water in vines or plants, I always considered it as a sub class.
Yeah, when Iroh said he learned lightning redirection by observing waterbenders. I think that element bending crossovers are totally a thing. Earth and Water benders can bend mud because there is dirt and moisture in it. Bend one half of it, and you can bend it all. The same thing goes for Lava Bending. Fire benders and Earth benders can be Lava Benders because you are moving firey rocks. After all. Guru Pathik once said, "The greatest illusion of this world is the illusion of separation. Things you think are separate and different are actually one and the same."
@@mathies3598 technically, yes, but it could go either way since Avatar isn't based on chemistry per se
5 років тому+65
@@mathies3598 When you want it to take this percise, almost no bending should be possible. There is no fire in lightning. Fire is not something that does actually exist. It is a combination of heat, particles and plasma. Plasma and particles are just earth particles. Heat is just the radiation or photons or the vibration of earth particles. Earth particles do not really exist because earth is just an combination of elements from the periodic table. Same goes for air and water. Lightnings are flows of charged ions and electrons throught and voltage difference. Ions and electrons are ingredients for elements in the periodic table. Photons and electrons are just elementary particles. If you analyse everything closely, you see that all bending styles are literally the same. If you look this closely, everybody with any bending skill should be able to bend absolutely everything. If you don't want to reduce bending to it's elementary particles, the statement would be the same: Fire benders are able to bend lava. Yes, I am fun at parties :D
Luca Dario Bützberger You can’t just make assumptions and talk about it like it’s a fact because it seems right to you. In the show we have seen water benders and earth benders both bend mud. There has not been a single time we’ve a fire bender bend lava, not even one. The show has not given any indication of such either. Lighting and fire are connected because in the avatar universe they are both forms of energy, lava has nothing to do with energy. So the idea that fire benders should be able to bend lava because they can bend lightning doesn’t make any sense.
Fire: Lighting, Blue Fire?, Sparky Sparky Boom Man Water: Blood blending, Healing, Mystical Water? Spirit Bending Earth: Metal Bending, Seismic Sense, Lava Bending Air: Flight/Gliding, Spiritual Projection, Avatar: Energy bending, The Avatar State, Access to the spirit World, Enhanced Power with all Past Lives (Up until Korra fucked it all up)
HTX The Wild yeah I hated that story line that korra could no longer pull on her past lives!! That ruined it for me. That is was like my favorite part of the avatar
@@Sn0manX Only the one bender could control the vines. The rest were just waterbenders who lived in the swamp. But yes, several people have mentioned him too. Though I'm not sure if he would be considered a subset of bending, since it was just the one man.
@@balls4391 fire bending isn't exactly bending things that are hot or once were hot. It's using one's chi to make energy that either turns into flames or lightning. It's basically energy bending in the form of heat. Besides even if your theory was correct, it would have to be molten glass.
It really bothers me how seemingly common lightning bending became in korra. like that was such a rare , elusive power move . then they just took that magic quality away . idk
I assumed that in ATLA it was only reserved for the royal family and wasn’t passed on to outsiders. Once that wasn’t really a thing anymore others were taught the ability. Probably meaning it’s not so much that it’s rare and difficult just kept to a certain group. But yeah I get you.
I always thought that lava bending was possible because the user had a fire bender in their lineage, as like a recessive gene or something. Similarly, i thought combustion bending was possible because the practitioner had an air bending recessive gene. Those two bending styles seem to be more of a combination of two forms as opposed to something like metal bending which seems to be a concentration of the earth form. I know the theory doesn't hold up when talking about spirit projection or lightning, but still, that's what i thought.
If bending was based of of ones genes would cause a lot of plot holes involving benders in general as some have shown an aptitude for up to two or more in regards to chi flow and manipulation in regards to one Bender (who I can never remember the name of) who manipulated his chi to where he is able to connect with more than one element.
@@wafflemadness199 Maybe, but think on this, the legend of the avatar was based before an age of science and study. What if people only presumed it was only the avatar who could bend all four because no one had done it before and it came naturally to them, also there wasn't a lot of gene pool mixing because people usualy stayed within thier respective element so there would not have been enough I guess cross breeding to know for sure and when they did cross elements strange new bending types popped up. Tell me what you think.
GuymelefSang lava bending has nothing to do with heat or fire, it’s about adding enough pressure to liquidise the rocks. All earth benders can crush rocks it’s simply about being able to apply enough force
I mean, I don't think that's what it is with either simply because in the last airbender we saw zuko create an explosion directly in front of himself when trying to create lighting, so if that explosive power was somehow figured out prior and it was figured out how to channel it into what combustion bending is it'd make more sense, and lava is just an earthbender figuring out how to control earth like a liquid instead of a solid.
"Why are there WOODEN cells in the FIRE nation?" Cheap to make and any escape attempt by a fire-bender would render the still-vulnerable-to-fire inmate surrounded by fire.
Firebenders can also do a sort of healing / spirit bending technique. As shown when Korra passes out and wakes up on an island with the firebender shaman lady.
There's sandbending and plantbending. Also, there's one more VITAL type of bending that only ONE character has mastered..... Womanbending, by Sokka!!!! Srsly that dude had too much fangirls
You only missed one kind of sub-bending, heatbending; however, since it is so obscure I guess it's reasonable. In the episode in the original series that dives into the past of avatar Roku and fire Lord Sozan, there is a scene where the two fight a volcano. Sozan, a fire bender, appears to bend air out of a volcano, cooling it down. He is obviously not bending the air, but the heat. Heatbending has no other appearances in the entire series. But considering the numerous applications and the obvious power (cooled down a volcano) this could be one of the most powerful forms of bending in the series.
I like the idea but fire bending is heatbending. A fire bender can put out a fire aswell as create one even if it may be harder like how a water bender can form ice or evaporate ice/water into mist or steam. Air bending, water bending and fire bending may have to do with the available amount of oxygen on a molecular scale and how well the bender can manipulate even the tiniest particles of their element coinciding with oxygen or vice versa, but fire benders are the true heat benders
@@conquistador497 , if we are trying to apply science and logic to firebending, then it is technically the manipulation of combustible gasses in the atmosphere combined with some form of energy to ignite it. This is most likely heat, but this is separate from the ability to manipulate fire. For example, Aang could minipulate existing fire in the sun warriors episode(firebending), but he could not make his own, which would involve a form of heatbending. Sozan used a refined form of this technique and to say that firebending and heatbending are the same thing is wrong.
syncflame the royal family was hoarding the info from the people, firelord azulon discovered the technique and passed it only to his two sons. Ozai would later teach Azula, and iroh would gain a deeper understanding of his fathers technique which he would teach zuko. After the 100 yr war, the technique was taught to everyone. That’s why it seems so exclusive in TLA vs Korra
I disagree with the notion of everybody should be able to lightning bend now. I think it takes away from the true mastery required to access such a powerful ability. Lightning bending isnt something you just learn, you can try all you want but without a perfect balance of negative and positive energy, along with not allowing your problems and insecurities conquer you, you just fail everytime. I guess every single fire bender has perfect balance and absolutely no turmoil within themselves in Legend of korra. Seriously they just made lightning bending less cooler
James Budd Yes and no , even though is more common is evident the decrease in power of lightning techniques. While in TLA the technique was used solely for killing people in TLoK we’ve seen people survive lightning strikes like it is more like a electricity shock rather than a pure lightning strike. At least that’s what I think.
@Jake Kim sound does use air as a medium. I could see it tbh. Like a bender isolating vibrating air and moving it. Good for stealthy stuffs, BUT that would require speed of sound reaction times. Vibration probably not, doesn't follow.
@@bornstar481 sound is literally vibration traveling through air so yeah. Tbh I'm sure you can make sound by airbending anyway, it's just wasn't ever practical in the show. Actually bending vibration sounds like some matter manipulation and much beyond airbending (tho you could say the same for spiritual projection)
It as "Sparky Sparky Boom Man" but then he went Boom so now it's "Sparky Sparky Boom Boom Man", gotta be accurate. The first boom was for his limbs, the second, well we all know.
If it’s living wood then a plantbender can and has manipulated wood. But dead wood like in the prison cell from The Runaway has no water, it is dead material and can’t be bended
Personally, I think lavabending works similarly to how waterbenders can freeze water, then manipulate the ice without it melting back. Just reversed: solid to liquid as opposed to liquid to solid. So an earthbender who studies that specific facet of waterbending (water to ice and back again), could probably reverse engineer improved lavabending techniques.
Also: Cloudbending (which admittedly may only be possible through the cooperation of water and air bending), sandbending was implied to be a distinct discipline within earthbending, and plantbending is a thing. On the theory side, I am of the opinion that both dust and bone bending are possible for earthbenders, but like metalbending, require such distinctive techniques and understandings of earthbending that they would require special study.
Interesting idea. Water to ice seems to be such a simple skill for waterbenders, perhaps because it would take intense pressure and focus to melt rock is why it seems so specialized in the earthbending subtypes.
@@junet9271 Exactly. I think that has to do with both environment and philosophy. Waterbenders are concentrated in the polar regions, so they are surrounded by ice, so it makes sense that they would develop techniques to manipulate it. I think it started as just liquefying ice for use in bending, but then one day it clicked that they could just go both ways, often rapidly, giving them a way to hit harder and increase their mobility options, while keeping the typical Water Tribe philosophy of flexibility. Also, water and ice are less dense than rock, so the mechanics would be easier. Meanwhile Earthbenders focus on strength and solidity, we do see EArthbenders compressing rock, but not melting it, and that lines up with their spiritual focus. I don't think it's a mistake that we only see lavabending after the establishment of the United Republic, which drew primarily from the Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom. This would not only expose Earthbenders to differing philosophies, as shown in the styles used in Pro Bending, but also to lava, as the Fire Nation is much more volcanically active than the Earth Kingdom.
@@junet9271 it's simple because it's very easy to turn water into ice or vice versa required pressure and temperature are not very low changing earth into lawa it's totally different thing
S. W. L. Shepard I think learning lavabending is less on technique and more on bloodline. Lavabending seems to require the bender to be able to both earthbend and firebend. This is why in ATLA, avatar Kyoshi and Roku are only able to lavabend because they are capable to bend both earth and fire. However, Bolin seems to be the exception. His mother is a firebender after all so Bolin must have inherited certian access to firebending that allowed him to lavabend.
I think it's because metal bending requires manipulating earth that you can't see. Toph was constantly using seismic sense to move around and see through the earth. Meanwhile, I believe many earth benders saw the earth and just sought to overpower it. The imprisoned earth benders likely lost hope of finding earth to bend and it was only when they physically saw rocks that they believed they could fight back. Toph, who was already used to finding earth that she can't see, was able to make her own way.
Toph realized she could see earth when she was in the metal cage. This was important in discovering metal bending. Unless you are blind, its unlikely that this would have been obvious to you.
That's just like saying why all human beings don't have IQs over 200,it's something extremely rare,1 in 100 earth benders can learn metal bending, and still what they learn is barely 5% of what toph could do,she's like one of the rarest earth bender of all times.
Amon uses a mix of blood bending but mostly healing to take away a person's bending. In healing waterbender open up the Chi paths so people can heal faster, Amon does the opposite.
Not really a kind of bending but one special power you missed is air benders sucking out the air in a persons lungs automatically executing their opponent. This was done by the goat air bender zaheer
Nerf airbending, please! Tbh air bending is superior to all other elements because every water molecule contains one oxygen atom, meaning a very skilled and powerful air bender could nullify to a certain degree water bending. Same with fire bending, fire requires oxygen to consummate, no oxygen = no fire. Earth is the only element that could stand a better chance but earth is made mostly out of silicate, and a molecule of silicate is 3 atoms of oxygen and 1 atom of silicon. I know it would take mad skills and knowledge but if a person can literally fly then I don't think it would be impossible. Oxygen is in almost everything, thus air bending is the most powerful. Of course, the elements are always at balance in nature so they are the same in benders, as in the individual's skill and prowess.
I love how weirdly disjointed subsets of air are compared to the others. Lava is liquid earth and metal has earth in it so that makes sense Combustion is just consentrated fire, and since fire itself is technically not actual matter, but a result ON matter from heat then plasma can also be controlled so lightning makes sense Blood and plants have water in them, and ice is just solid water (Although the healing stuff is iffy) But air is all like "Oh you can fly without using actual airbending and yiu can also send out your fuckin soul!"
I think its less about the bending amd more about them being monks. At least the spiritual one is definitely bc of monks. Idk about the flying tho mabey a whole new bending
Toph also uses Seismic Sense to detect if someone's lying. But, if the person in question is already skilled in lying such as Azula, Toph wouldn't know the difference.
Toph can't tell the difference. Her seismic sense is basically a lie detector, relying on heart rate. When you lie your heart rate increases. Good liars don't have their heart rate increase. Toph can't tell the difference.
@@marshmallowallen5677 Toph literally said that. You either didn't watch the show, or didn't watch the episode where she explained HOW she can sense liars.
Not every girl he met... I'm sure Katara has no romantic feelings for him. (For obvious reasons.) Also, let's just say Zuko did not have to worry about getting his (Former but we all know they'll get back together.) girlfriend stolen by him. Or he and Sokka being brother in-law. (On Sokka's part anyway.)
FIREBENDERS CAN NOT BE LAVABENDER. As you said lava isn't fire but really heated earth. Every bender can control the temperature of their element, water benders can make ice or steam, Airbenders can blow freeze breath and heat their body in cold conditions, talented firebenders like Azula can bend hotter fire, and very talented earthbenders can heat earth.
The Objective Geek - Reviews & Analysis I know I just thought it was interesting because he’s a firebender and pretty much everyone thought lavabending was a firebending ability
@@elijahblast7548 oh yea, definitely. At that time everyone thought and rightfully so that it was a fire bender technique. Even some of the behind the scenes (not technically canon) said only a fully realized avatar could do it, through earthbending and firebending.
I’d say say they’re changing temperature, or more accurately they’re adding energy to the molecules, rather than pressure. The Lava from lava bending seems to be relatively hot, if they just lowered the pressure so much that it liquifies then it wouldn’t actually be hot to the touch.
I can’t find anyone who talks about mud bending literally it’s like the easiest bending any water and earth bender can do, toph and katara mud bended ty lee but no body talks about it 🤣
Honestly though that's just how modernization works. As people become able to share knowledge to a wider audience utilizing that knowledge becomes easier
Combustible Dragon that’s cause in last airbender the skills’ users were also the discoverers. Being able to do a really complex integral problem in 2019 doesn’t make you Isaac Newton, just means you learned from him. Skills also become more ubiquitous once someone learns them and is willing to teach them. I think it’s really good world-building.
One thing I didn't like about Korra's series was that Bending went from a spiritual art to a common easy to access tool. It was quite emphasised in Aang's series that every form of bending is closely related to the persons emotional and spiritual state while delivered through physical mastery, every three aspects must have been very developed and in balance in order to become a master bender.... In Korra it seemed that anyone without any special training or development of the spiritual side just accessed even the highest forms of these arts. As intriguing as the bendings are, ai think it would have been more interesting it only a true hand full of benders had access to these masteries while some parts of population would have struggled even with the basics. Why? It was an industrial revolution. The inbalance with nature and the spiritual rises as people's lives become more monotone (still- Emphasised by Iroh), fast and removed from the world. Would be interesting if some provinces in Fire Nation of Earth Kingdom were to put emphasis into development and preservation of these arts due to the decline. ... This could have been an entire seasons conflict and could even concentrate on the suppression of none benders by state or society.
It's called evolution If people start doing stuff the next generation will have it in their DNA and it will be easier In reality it takes more time but this is avatar Plus that Toph started to teach Metal bending to people since the avatar comics
@@toon_scaling Evolution works with biologically inherited traits, not with skills. Many people have genetical predisposition to be a good athlete or a painter but unless they train for it they won't be either of those things. Yes, the ability to control elements is at least partially genetical but the art of bending is not. Toph did start an academy which does explain why there are elite members, like the police, who know how to metal bend or even why there is a city of metal benders which consists of people who followed Tophs and her daughter's teachings. What id does not explain is how a commoner from poor regions of the city learns how to Lightning bend because Lightning emission was a skill so rare that majority of those who had the skill were from the royal family.
@@tomasvrabec1845 Well your comment kind of debunks yourself bcs they got biologically better and they trained so its easier that it was for the previous generations Also again, those bending styles were already learned after s3 so it means it's not something that just started in Korea bcs it starts in ATLA
@@tomasvrabec1845 Like Iroh said bending evolves. New techniques will be created and new sub-elements would be discovered so you can't expect things to be the same like ATLB when LOK took place 70 years after 100 year war.
@@tomasvrabec1845 Why the hell would it be exatcly the same people with the same cultural stand points after over 70 year's. It's people like you who keep saying korra is bad only because avatar did it and korra didn't do it. Like try to think
One thing I wish we new more about was how the lion turtles used energy bending to gift people with the power of the elements. we’ve only seen 5, one for each of the 4 elements and the one that gifted Aang with energy bending, but we know there were more lion turtles before they were hunted to near extinction. So theoretically couldn’t the other lion turtles had the ability to gift the power of other forms of energy like the elements
when One , the first avatar, met the spirits for the first time , they told him that there are many lions turtles , so I guess yeah and not just bending element powers , they may give other powers as taking that powers or giving it away .. but what are they lion turtles anyway and where they came from , and why are they helping people against spirits ?
The one who gifted Aang with energy ending is the fire lion turtle, and they weren't hunted at all. The lion turtles just resigned their position as protectors of mankind.
Air: Flying Water: Blood, cloud(shared with Airbenders), plant, spirit, healing, mud/slurry(shared with earthbenders) Earth: Lava(shared with fire benders), metal, sand Fire: Combustion, lightning, fire healing, gas/smoke bending (shared with Airbenders), fire healing Misc: Energy
Water also has the octupus arm thing only sime can do that nd also plant bending maybe even ice bending for the water benders in the swamp thad be rare
i've always thought that specific bending techniques could potentially be when two people from different elements have a child, like with bolin, he had a fire nation mother and an earth kingdom father, in my head that's what allowed him to lava bend?
I always thought lava bending was something offspring of earth and fire nationers/ benders and since mako and bolin parents are from both nations that's why he can do it
I guess it's like with lightning redirection which Iroh created from studying how waterbenders fight. I'm thinking lavabenders used the principle of how waterbenders and firebenders use temperature in their bending.
It has nothing to do with genetics. Each bender only have 1 kind of chi in them. If you have 2 parents with different bendings you will still only be able to bend one element. Lavabending just takes natural talent.
i totally disagree that astral projection was an air bending thing, i think any person (or at least any bender) could astral project, but it takes deep spirituality. air benders tend to be more spiritual, but thats due to their culture's emphasis on peace and meditation. i think, if in the the first show the writers had decided that astral projection was a thing non-avatars could do, uncle iroh couldve definitely been able to do it, especially when he was in jail in the last season.
He was able to do it. The show even said that his consciously left his body behind when he was old and moved his spirit to the spirit world which is why he is there.
You’re right it’s not an air bending thing but due to the lifestyle the monks of the air temples lived they were more spiritually in tune and could achieve this more consistently than any other kind of person/bender
No one does it like jinora though. The others like uncle iroh, zaheer, korra, the truth seer in zaofu can only enter the spirit world and that's it, they're just able to move to a spirit dimension and do things there. Jinora, an air bender, can do that in human world, she can see her own body, interact with people in human world and even spirit tracking to find someone if she focuses on the target's spiritual energy
@@dano639 Kiyoshi also "lava bends" when she creates Kiyoshi island. The Avatar can combine Earth and Fire bending to bend lava, if they have mastered both.
for the idiots that say cloud bending is an air sub skill. cloud bending is dirived from water bending since clouds are just condenced watter molecules. thats how aang did it. more evidince because. KATARA DID IT TOO.
My questions have always been, if the waterbenders can manipulate ice, snow, water, etc, why didn't they move their villages under the ice and snow during fire nation raids? I live in Northern Canada and if you are living in - 0 to -60°C weather on a regular basis you would dig down into snow to provide the best warth insulation, the snow itself. They could have hidden small villages no issue right at the beginning beforehand and even the non-benders could have helped the effort with waterbender focused on proper ventilation that is hidden. While ice shifts are a natural part of glacial movement so clearly digging into a sheer glacial cliff is dumb (I've travelled to the territories, so I know and I have felt them), but they have icebergs that they could have burrowed into so vents & door and voila the whole large undercarriage of the iceberg is free to renovate much like and igloo or a hut; with air vents only on hidden sections on the top part of the iceberg. It would be water benders job to ensure not accidentally hitting other icebergs. Hell they could have their own Atlantis under the water, especially considering how advanced the Northern Water Tribes were. I know that air ventilation is important and they could have done that with water pressure & ice funnels that slowly leak out heat & bring in air & oxyen.
that is a really cool idea , but I think is kinda too far fatched for at least the last air bender, but that would be really cool, but on a side note , I always wondered why they never used boiling water they could've made some Fire benders level burns, but maybe it would take up to much energy or be to slow to be useful
@@lavaot5207 it cant be slow if you consider they freeze water in milliseconds, just the opposite way and I doubt it will take too much energy since they can easily melt their own ice.
Kyoshi wasn’t the first seen tho, in season 1 roku lava bends to destroy the Fire temple and it is shown again in the first episode of season 2 when he is explaining how to avatar state works, it shows a avatar in fire nation clothes bending lava out of a volcano. The episode with kyoshi was the fifth episode of season 2
@@hadeskingoftheunderworld7010 well they used it for fighting, healing, lived away from materialistic buildings and shit so it has time to connect with spirits, therefore spirit-bending. Water is probably the most in depth bending style simply because they used it for survival, not war(fire), building a city (earth/metal), Air-benders dying out, (air, which we couldn't discover astral until more air-benders comes along). Simply said, water-benders had more time to perfect their bending style simply because they are connected with spirits, live in a harsh zone where healing and combat is needed, and they are far more traditional than the other tribes besides air.
@@CopShowGuy I actually think it's a cool attn to detail. Much like with any industrial revolution, many skills that were once reserved for a select few-like reading or driving, for example-becomes more accessible to more people. I'd imagine the same thing happened in korra with certain bending arts and subsets. The removal of the traditional, specified martial art forms from bending to basically uniform mma forms remind me of how writing went from being almost artlike itself with calligraphy, to unified printed form. It's sad that it's more common and so much of what made avatar so unique didn't make it on to korra, but I actually like this particular parallel to the real word giving that so much of the avatar universe was inspired by real world events/cultures etc
CopShowGuy it’s just that lightning bending use to be something that was only shown as something that extremely skilled firebenders could do despite it being shown by only three members of the fire nation royal family in last air bender even though it’s an easier subset to learn than say bloodbending
Bill Gentry it’s the bloodlines. They became more popular like tofs family hve their own metal city. So ofcourse lightning bending will soar. Supply and demand. Tht also works for metalbending and why those two brothers could blood bend so well.
Say what you want about LoK, I still like how they explored and expanded the subbending techniques. Also, since the next Avatar is going to be an earthbender, I'd like it, if their special move was levitation via earthbending.
@Kenneth Dixon Like when earthbenders "throw" rocks, they don't necessarily have to touch the rocks. Look, I'm not trying to argue here, all I'm saying is it'd be cool.
@Kenneth Dixon Magnetism would also be cool, but as we've established, not all metals can be bent. Anyway, I'd call mine gravitybending, because why the hell not? If we compare Avatar's timeline to ours, they must've gone through similar scientific discoveries by the the time the next Avatar comes to power.
i've been thinking about this. remember when Kuvira 'choke' Varrick on the train (when she forced Varrick to develop the spirit weapon) with Metal parts of their uniform Darth Vader's style? why didn't Metal benders build like a suit that covers themselves with metal and just bend it to fly? that's kinda how Magneto flies lol
Fr tho like remember in the last season they couldn't get over the wall but they can just build a cliff over the wall and also bruh they can walk so easily just make like a moving cliff but bolin and many ither benders aint think of that like a water bender could make a wave to nake traveling wau faster
She missed Plant Sand Mud Sound [In The Tales of Ba Sing Se] Thermal control [When Zuko turns embers into a pillar of fire and Katara blows on water turning it to ice] Ice Mist Crystals And specialized masteries like Azula's blue flames
Plant is just water in plants like blood is. My favorite thermal control tbh heating up water to mist or lowering to ice. Or heating earth to lava is flame
Azulas blue flame is just the higher temperature of the heat. It is hotter so its blue. I lowkey think it's a side effect of her mental illness because she is an unstable hothead hence her fire turned blue. Before her mother left, her fire was a normal orange.
Yeah but I still feel an accomplished firebender could change their flame color all the way to white or for aesthetics if they wish Black [Yes Black flames exist thanks to sodium] although not the ultimate firebending technique it could harold in a new era where you can see how advanced each person is by their flame color.
@@saintsinner4074 I assume so too... the only reason why I believe her fire is blue is because Ozai was arguably one of the angriest firebenders in the show. Yet his fire remained orange. Azula was angry and she had mental issues and her fire was different. However what you said was absolutely fascinating. It would've been expensive to bring to screen but imagine a firebemder being able to change the colour based on emotion. Regular fire would be orange, If they were angry it turned to a bright red etc...
@@matthewmclaughlin9425 they bend the actual heat because fire after all is just extremely hot gas and the light is a by product of the heat so if they can meditate and master different heat levels it would show you how good they are at bending even before a fight. White is for sages, Greens are average mid teens, training into your late teens you can go Violet and Pinks and White tints are for those who dedicated their lives to the art. I will say however you can make flame hotter by accident as it is one of only 2 of the bending disciplines DIRECTLY corelated with emotion.

Maybe also nerve bending. A waterbending technique where you bend moisture in someone's brain to make them think, do, or say something, but on their own will. making them think it's their idea and desire to do something.
It's pretty clear that the rarity of skills comes from the number of people teaching it. Once toph discovered metal bending and taught it to her daughters, it was basically guaranteed that the earth nation would soon begin to scour the population for new metal benders. Likewise with lightning bending, these are two incredibly useful skills in an industrial world, it's only logical that demand would lead to more potential being tapped. Blood bending on the other hand was intentionally kept secret because of how dangerous it is, so that any time someone uses it it's probably because they invented it.
Yeah. As Hama was at the last stage of her life, Katara was the only one we know of who could've thought others to bloodbend, but pretty sure she would never.
Water tribe elders: "men will fight, not heal. women will heal, not fight." Villager: "sir, wouldnt it make more sense for our warriors to be able to heal themselves on the battlefield" Elders: ''what it this logical witchcraft. EXILE THEM!"
nah, she went crazy and invented blood bending. though during her adventures, she did meet a nice young fire nation soldier, who showed her the awesomeness of tea.
Its weird tho hyper sensitivity was only used once by that one guy and she forgot ice and the thing zahger did to take their breath away octupus arms tornadoes earthquakes abd tsunamis
Fire produces infinite energy from nothing requires no object to perform Air theoretically can control the weather by manipulating air flow and can pull all the air out of someone
Water most useful, you heal, you damage, you spirit control, you puppet-master, although best for healers.. Fire, most destructive, army should be fire. Air, most mastery = flight, transcendence, most balanced of all, should be the diplomats. Earth: the surveillance one, good for making weapons/buildings/armor/machines(industrialization bend), good for police and detective work. Water: Healers and Spirit-benders Fire: Attack, War and Destroy or electricians working with Earth Earth: Sneak, gather info, chase terrorists and metalworkers Build with Electricians Air: Most levelheaded benders, in tune with the astral world, best diplomats, wouldn't want to fight them though as they counter most.
Wavy Mitch Water bending can't heal serious wounds. Water has to be the most dangerous because if a blood bender is skilled enough to blood bend without having to move their own hands or can take other's bending away, all other bender's that isn't an Avatar are f**ked. Earth bending is the most useful because you can bend materials that can make money such as gems, crystals, and of course metal. Fire bending can be destructive but the flames can be taken out by the rest of the basic elements. As for air bending, you'd have to meet certain conditions that might be hard to do. Things like pulling the oxygen out of someone's lounges (The victim has to not be moving around too much) and flight (You have to let go of the things you care about, pretty much being apathetic).
@@mattfaussett5350 what about when Aang covered himself in crystal as an armor? Or was that also rock candy randomly growing underground in some sort of cave?
LOVED THIS! Just wanted to add a comment on lava bending. While a special form of earth bending makes sense, I also think it applies to fire as well. It seems like the writers intended that because it’s known by Roku (fire) but also in The Avatar State episode, when past avatars are shown excelling in their element, avatar Szeto (fire)is scene lava bending. Fire is also broken down to energy, and lava is merely rock with intense heat and energy. Great video and discussion on all these topics!
What about plant bending? Granted, it was just the one swamp guy, but still. Also, the writers came out and said that lavabending is just manipulating the liquid form of earth, similar to a water bender turning ice into water for their manipulations.
yea earthbending is easily the best when you incorporate the specializations. its my favorite regardless, but LoK made it particularly good because metalbending with tethers gives earthbenders crazy mobility (specifically areal), which was its greatest weakness in TLA.
No, because Avatar Yangchen said that the avatar’s duty is to the world, so the avatar can never give up earthly desires since it’s their job to protect the world, and to protect the world you have to care about it.
Peter_Panda No they cant watch HelloFutureMe's video essay on it, Its like earthbenders being able to do their own version of bloodbending because we have iron or metal in our body but its not enough for them to be able to
you most likely could if you could bend sand and get the help of a fire or a lava bender, the problem is that glass cools off easily so you would need some way to keep a high and constant heat to do that
They would be expert glass "blowers"/crafters huh? Make amazing things out of moltan glass. ALSO Metal benders can possible restructure metal to become magnetized in theory! :) I imagine in one big directional thrust of energy. Like a combustion bender.
They can bend Crystal's cant they. The Dai Li? Or whatever the earth kingdoms secret force was called caged iroh with Crystal's after zuko betrayed him.
Sand bending Plant bending via the swamp benders one of the only times you ever saw living things bent besides blood bending. I would argue that guru patik was a chi bender, as he wasnt a elemental bender and through great study discovered how to control peoples chakras and release them. Something that would not just help the avatar any bender would become stronger from unlocking all of their chakras if they were strong enough mentally to. Katara also bends perfume which is mostly alcohol so it might extend to most liquids not just pure water in general.
Unless the episode when Zuko and Katara went to find her mother's killer was a full moon that would mean that she could bloodbend without it. But it makes sense Katara was a very powerful waterbender. Katara honestly was a waterbending prodigy like Azula with fire, but since she was always with Aang that overshadowed most of her skill because he handled most of the giant threats with the avatar state.
It was full moon, Katara cannot bloodbend without the fullmoon or at least Never tried to do it. She could probably do it If She trained herself to do but never did
@@Cmon_bro12 I'd imagine that they'd use air frequencies to push and move sound waves it easily can kill people if not careful and would be monitored like blood bending for how lethal and deadly it is
10:36 I think lava bending is about generating enough friction and heat to melt the rock. I don't think fire benders can lava bwnd because they can only heat the rock, not manipulate the material. Also, it seems to represent a more free thinking style, as suppose to the rigid fortitude of metal bending (hence why I believe Bolin couldn't metal bend because of his personality; also, Ghazan had the same type of unorthodox approach to live). To conclude, Lava bending is about fluidity within a solid
I think in order to be a lava bender you have to be a child of an earth and fire bender, you need to have the genetic ability to generate and manipulate lava. Like bolin. But that’s just a theory I have
There could be so many subsets of Earthbending, though I may be wrong, Lavabending, Sandbending, Glassbending, Metalbending, Bloodbending, Crystalbending, and so much more
I always thought blood-bending could have been an asset within the medical field of the avatar universe. It got a bad wrap when it could have done some good
all things considered, earth bending is the most advantageous ability. you are literally surrounded by earth and metal. and of course if you mastered lava bending > free fire source
I think air is too, it’s literally anywhere that you are because we all need to breathe it and if you’re a strong enough air bender I feel like you can move most of the other elements at least a bit to get it out of your way, also you can cut stuff with crazy precision, or maybe I’m just saying that because if I was in this universe I’d be an air nomad no question lolll😆
Water to me is the most convenient cuz in TLA, Hama literally pulls it out if the water vapor in the air. By that logic you could also just place it in the air around you in vapor form and carry it around like and invisible Arsenal
Air is by far has the potential to be op. But since they were too strong that’s the main reason Why they were wiped out. I think the air benders have the most potential like gravity bending, flying, and sound bending
Yeah but imagine them using it in avatar state. They will be shooting nukes out their head but could die in dumb way so it's best not to use combustion bending.
@@thelorebrarian2266 Imagine it exploding though in avatar state when avatar blood lusted. If I was that avatar villain. I will be running for those hills or flying.
here's a thought. Maybe lavabenders are only lavabenders 'cause they're earthbenders that are half Fire Nation (like Bolin's father was from the Earth Kingdom and his mother was from the Fire Nation). Think about it, they gotta bend the earth, but they also gotta heat it up and/or cool it down. Maybe the heating/cooling is the earthbender's Fire Nation side of the family kicking in?
There is no such thing as a bender with two elemental heritages in then other than the avatar. It is specifically an earthbending technique. If we assume your logic then mako should also be able to bend lava and that is not the case. Not only that, but it would imply that only earrhbenders who had waterberdibg parents could bend mud, for exemple.
@@gabriellockwood2780 Did you not see the episode when Sozin was helping Roku stop the volcano's eruption. He literally took the smoke from the lava and shifted it using two fingers similar to lightning bending to cool it down...
@@gabriellockwood2780 I don't get what you're saying dude. I'm just mentioning it because it wasn't featured in the video like sandbending. With the logic you just gave me, cloud-bending is 'air' as well. Aang and no other bending directly manipulated smoke, they used air to control the trajectory if it ever happened
There are a lot of similarities between Avatar: The Last Airbender and Game of Thrones when you start to break them both down. Wait wait wait. So the energy bending was given to aang first? I need to rewatch avatar to see when this happens because I think I remember aang seeing the lion turtle waaay before the final battle
Mind tackling this Enquire?
*WHERE ARE THE LIGHTNING BENDERS?*
*_This due to the fact that Fire-Benders can’t actually bend lightning, they can only generate and redirect it._*
With *Lightning Generation,* the moment the lightning leaves the fingertips the Bender has no control over it _(a fact Iroh confirms)._ Also with *Lightning Redirection,* even the slightest mistake can be potentially fatal to the one redirecting it _(again Iroh confirms this)._ Other reasons for why they can’t bend lightning are:
- They can only fire it from the fingertips
- They can only take lightning from an outside source if it’s fired at them and they catch it with their fingertips.
Also it usually takes a few seconds to fire a single bolt _(imagine how most fights with Lightning Generation would end if their opponent just blasted them instead of standing there, heck, Amon didn’t and even though Lightning Bolt Zolt had every advantage Amon was able to effectively dodge)._
*If you're still confused imagine it like this;* A Water-Bender could pull Water from a jar to their right make it do a full 360 degree turn around them and then put it in an empty jar to their left without once making physical contact with the water or jars, or even so much as moving from their spot and could likely do the same with Blood & Plants, as could an Earth-Bender with Earth, Metal or Lava.
To help illustrate, here's Iroh's explanation of Lightning Generation with the singular use of the word 'fire' _(in the word 'firebender')_ removed:
_There is energy all around us. The energy is both yin and yang; positive energy and negative energy. Only a select few benders can separate these energies. This creates an imbalance. The energy wants to restore balance and in a moment the positive and negative energy come crashing back together. You provide release and guidance, creating lightning._ - *Iroh*
And his unedited explination of Lightning Redirection:
_If you let the energy in your own body flow, the lightning will follow it. You must create a pathway from your fingertips up your arm to the shoulder, then down into the stomach. The stomach is the source of energy in your body; it is called the sea of chi. From your stomach you direct it up again and out the other arm. The stomach detour is critical; you must not let the lightning pass through your heart, or the damage could be deadly._ - *Iroh*
Now compare those explanations to an explanation of how Metal-Bending works, especially if you never use the word Earth or any equivalent, or Lava-Bending, maybe try to explain Plant-Bending without mention Water.
This is further compounded by the fact that when Zuko mucked up his Lightning Redirection on the very same day when protecting Katara from Azula, he not only didn't die, but was completely fine after a quick Healing session from Katara
And without Lightning-Benders there is no balance of the elements, for Water would beat Fire which beats Air whom overpowers Earth, but Earth gets eroded by water with only the most durable rocks been able to stand up to it, most rivers rely on flora to keep the waters in check.
_(That ‘might’ of contributed to her insanity at the end of the series)_
Also, it conflicts with Iroh's Fire-Bending explanation in the First episode of taking in breath, making it energy, which becomes Fire. *But this raises two issues:*
*I have considered many reasons for why proper Lightning-Bending has been left out of the series and it is easy to debunk every one of them:*
First of all, in the case of whether there were Lightning-Benders or Lightning-Bending was a sub-skill of Fire-bending:
1. In TAS if lightning-bending were used for the Fire Nation the villains could have been seen as too powerful, if against them then not a real threat, but this could have been overcome with some creative story writing.
2. In LOK it would made those who were Lightning-Benders far less vulnerable to the Equalists electric weapons, but then they could just use gas bombs filled with sleeping gas or maybe poison _(they did have gas based weaponry which they used for at least smokescreens and wore gas masks)_
And for the matter of just having Lightning-benders in the show:
But this would have just enforced Guru Pathik’s point that the separation of the elements was just an illusion
_(and before you say that there was no Lightning Chakra, it is quite possible that it was just renamed)._
Other. Nation!)_
@@omarmenjivar1563 Plant bending isn't a subskill. All they use is water within the plant to control the plant.

you missed a few important ones:
Earth: Sand bending
Fire: Fire Healing (Seen in Korra Book 2), Gas/Smoke bending (Fire Lord Sozin used it when he was helping Roku stop the volcano.)
Water: Swamp (or Plant bending)
I felt like there should’ve been a fire healing because there’s energy in it like there’s energy in water!!!
what Fire Lord did was Heat Bending
A-dog Johnson that’s the same with metal bending and blood blending. The bend the small components
A-dog Johnson just like they just bend the water inside the blood, it’s Waterbending but they still call it blood bending so why not plant bending
One thing that gets glossed over a lot :
Fire Lord Sozin showed the ability to siphon away heat and send it into the air.
Thank you for bringing this up. It has been on my mind for so many years.

And "vacuum bending" by removing air in a certain area and following a certain pattern, as Zaheer did with the Earth Kingdom Queen.
You ok, buddy?
Also theoretically, due to Firebenders using their own warm to create fire, one could just burn someone from the inside with it.
i wouldnt be suprised if he was the actual avatar
I mean the metalbenders did have steel wires attached to them they just never used them in combat usefully
There is also sandbending (if you consider that one) and the controlling plants thing!
sandbending is simply earthbending tiny mountains, while plantbending is controlling the water within the plant.
@@ashneehs Metalbending is earthbending tiny mountains in metal, and Bloodbending is controlling the water within a person. I think those count.

But there is no fire in lava, there is nothing that burns in rocks, lava is just really hot.
@@mathies3598 Look beyond the differences, friend.
@@mathies3598 technically, yes, but it could go either way since Avatar isn't based on chemistry per se

Nah nah, you out here talking about allele's. I just finished exams. Don't hit me up with that.

For example, Aang could minipulate existing fire in the sun warriors episode(firebending), but he could not make his own, which would involve a form of heatbending. syncflame the royal family was hoarding the info from the people, firelord azulon discovered the technique and passed it only to his two sons.
@ James seriously !
except that doesnt hold up when u remember how zuko couldnt do it right, instead it'd blow up in his face cuz he didnt know his destiny
James Budd Yes and no , even though is more common is evident the decrease in power of lightning techniques. While in TLA the technique was used solely for killing people in TLoK we’ve seen people survive lightning strikes like it is more like a electricity shock rather than a pure lightning strike. @@PrincexDC they have water tho
I’m suprised the earthbenders which were imprisoned in an all metal facility weren’t the ones who discovered metal bending
Earthbenders were conditioned tp believe they couldn't, so they never tried to do it. You can do what you've never tried.

Not really a kind of bending but one special power you missed is air benders sucking out the air in a persons lungs automatically executing their opponent. This was done by the goat air bender zaheer
Asphyxiation is too broken of a move ngl

Ice bending is the same as the earth bending
Technically it's the same as heating water with water bending, it just takes significantly less pressure

@Omar Omar yeah korea sucks

Toph did start an academy which does explain why there are elite members, like the police, who know how to metal bend or even why there is a city of metal benders which consists of people who followed Tophs and her daughter's teachings.

That makes waterbenders like Sunade
@@samuelmanny6231 ice cream? Sweet!
Water: Plant & ice bending
Earth: Sand & Crystal bending
Fire: Energy reading & Jet propulsion
Air: Hyper sensitivity

Its weird tho hyper sensitivity was only used once by that one guy and she forgot ice and the thing zahger did to take their breath away octupus arms tornadoes earthquakes abd tsunamis
Ehm seismic sense
And mud
Water Bending: most dangerous
Earth Bending: most useful
Fire Bending: most flashy
Air Bending: most rare (up until the spirit gates were left open)
Even afterwards, there's only a couple dozen Airbenders in total after harmonic convergence
Fire produces infinite energy from nothing requires no object to perform
Air theoretically can control the weather by manipulating air flow and can pull all the air out of someone
Patrick Wood the victim would have to not be moving too much for the air being removed from their body to work.
Water: Healers and Spirit-benders
Fire: Attack, War and Destroy or electricians working with Earth
Earth: Sneak, gather info, chase terrorists and metalworkers Build with Electricians
Air: Most levelheaded benders, in tune with the astral world, best diplomats, wouldn't want to fight them though as they counter most.
In avatar I believe they visit a city of Earth benders who bend green crystals as well.
It was Bomi in omashu and it was rock candy. I guess that counts as rock
@@mattfaussett5350 what about when Aang covered himself in crystal as an armor? Or was that also rock candy randomly growing underground in some sort of cave?
@@TheShadowfist45 The crystal is a just a mineral which is usually one component of a rock.
Plant bending is basically water bending subset. You're moving the water in the plants
Exactly, it's still an advanced form. What makes blood bending (bending the water in the human body) and advanced form and plant bending not?
@@TheLunarboy4 one usually needs a full moon to boost powers, the other is just a moderately advanced water bender.
Me:
Avatar TLA: Nah, earthbening is meh
Avatar LoK: Earthbending is Lit Fam
yea earthbending is easily the best when you incorporate the specializations. its my favorite regardless, but LoK made it particularly good because metalbending with tethers gives earthbenders crazy mobility (specifically areal), which was its greatest weakness in TLA.
VINE BENDING/ PLANT BENDING?? OF THE SWAMPY TRIBE?????? YOU FORGOT IT.
Joonrei Lejandro Garrido Domanais ehh not a big deal to talk about
The Swampy Tribe... I love it! Haha!
Fa-Ghi Swamp style...or something
That's just bending the water in plants, not such a big deal, just like how sand bending is just bending really tiny rocks
I remember that shit episode was fire G
Also, if you have to give up earthly desires, does that mean Aang could have gained the ability to fly had he completed his final chakra?
...katara...
No, because Avatar Yangchen said that the avatar’s duty is to the world, so the avatar can never give up earthly desires since it’s their job to protect the world, and to protect the world you have to care about it.
True, thanks for explaining that
@@eric.hernandez There is a difference between Earthly desires and Earthly connections
I always wondered if earthbenders could bend glass
Peter_Panda No they cant watch HelloFutureMe's video essay on it, Its like earthbenders being able to do their own version of bloodbending because we have iron or metal in our body but its not enough for them to be able to
They'd break it....
you most likely could if you could bend sand and get the help of a fire or a lava bender, the problem is that glass cools off easily so you would need some way to keep a high and constant heat to do that
They would be expert glass "blowers"/crafters huh? Make amazing things out of moltan glass.
ALSO Metal benders can possible restructure metal to become magnetized in theory! :) I imagine in one big directional thrust of energy. Like a combustion bender.
They can bend Crystal's cant they. The Dai Li? Or whatever the earth kingdoms secret force was called caged iroh with Crystal's after zuko betrayed him.
Sand bending
Plant bending via the swamp benders one of the only times you ever saw living things bent besides blood bending.
I only just realized while watching this video that the guy who does Iroh's voice is definitely the same guy who does Aku's in Samurai Jack.
Rip mako
I hope not, cause dude is dead....
Akuuuuuu
@@br9760 it's the same guy it's mako but his voice double took over during avatar
The episode, four tales of ba sing se was a tribute to Mako when he died.
She could probably do it If She trained herself to do but never did
There should be a sound bending in the avatar series, a sub bending by air benders..
How would that work
@@Cmon_bro12 I'd imagine that they'd use air frequencies to push and move sound waves it easily can kill people if not careful and would be monitored like blood bending for how lethal and deadly it is
@@mineking6391 what if flying in the avatar universe isnt caused by being free but controlling helium
Or lightbending
@@zthemartian616 I can see fire benders using this
10:36 I think lava bending is about generating enough friction and heat to melt the rock.
Heat is an attribute of fire though, although yeah, earthbenders and avatars are the only ones lavabending...
I think in order to be a lava bender you have to be a child of an earth and fire bender, you need to have the genetic ability to generate and manipulate lava. Like bolin. But that’s just a theory I have
I love that you call the combustion bender Sparky Sparky Boom Boom Man. Made me laugh in the show. And I am enjoying you on The John Campea Show.
There could be so many subsets of Earthbending, though I may be wrong, Lavabending, Sandbending, Glassbending, Metalbending, Bloodbending, Crystalbending, and so much more
I always thought blood-bending could have been an asset within the medical field of the avatar universe. It got a bad wrap when it could have done some good
Yes they could blood bend unblocked move stagnant blood out.
all things considered, earth bending is the most advantageous ability.
you are literally surrounded by earth and metal. and of course if you mastered lava bending > free fire source
Earth is limited in certain places like on water or in the air. Battle wise, air is the most convenient
Derick Lewis the main reason they were wiped out is because they knew aang would be reincarnated into an air nomad
Also, Energy Reading with Firebending. Which you would think would involve lightning, as electricity is within the body.
ahh right isnt that what the sages do when they find a washed up korra with amnesia?
Why does nobody ever credit Milo with discovering fartbending?!? I think that counts! It's takes a lot of skill to not just bend wind but break wind!
I've always been curious, If an avatar was a combustion Bender, would their forehead tattoo glow just like the arrows on an air Nomad Avatar?
The lorebrarian it would glow
It would glow because the tattoo is along the users chi path similar to how Aang’s tattoos are following his chi paths along his body
Yeah but imagine them using it in avatar state. They will be shooting nukes out their head but could die in dumb way so it's best not to use combustion bending.
@@mr.kingofphenomenal4629 I imagine it'd be similar to Vaatu's spirit beam
Maybe its also tied to being aggressive. Which bolin needs to be because hes a pro bender
Smoke bending as demonstrated by sozin in roku's flashback or did I miss it?
Smoke is air.
...
@@gabriellockwood2780 Did you not see the episode when Sozin was helping Roku stop the volcano's eruption. He literally took the smoke from the lava and shifted it using two fingers similar to lightning bending to cool it down...
@@Commentar1000
Yes, but "Smoke" is still 'Air'.
It's super-heated, yes, but it's still a cloud of air.
@@Commentar1000
I'm not saying it ISN'T a Bending technique, I'm just saying it might be more like Lava/Combustion Bending.
(Possibly?)
@@gabriellockwood2780 I don't get what you're saying dude. I'm just mentioning it because it wasn't featured in the video like sandbending. With the logic you just gave me, cloud-bending is 'air' as well. Smoke got different elements including water vapor, further proving the point of the elements intersectionality like how lightning-bending was derived from water-bending technique. Aang and no other bending directly manipulated smoke, they used air to control the trajectory if it ever happened
