    I leave for my ACDF surgery in a couple hours and I thought of looking at UA-cam videos about it at the last minute. Your videos are helpful and reassuring. I just ordered Vitamin E oil and coconut oil on Amazon same day delivery. Should be here shortly after I get back. :) Thanks for posting your videos. - TJ

      TJ,
      that is great to hear my videos are helpful. Thank you for sharing that. I am happy you ordered the vitamin E oil and coconut oil. You will be very pleased. They worked wonders on me. I am almost 1 year out from surgery ( Oct.1 ) and you can barely see my scar. It healed so well! Wishing you a speedy healing!! :)

    Thanks for the video. The scar on your neck is called a "Keloid scar'. I too was in a terrible car accident in 2002 and I never sought physical therapy for my neck. I should have!! Back in 2009, I had xrays taken of my neck, hips, shoulders etc...The Rheumatology MD told me "You have the worst neck I have ever seen, You must be in terrible pain". I didn't. Well, now it is 2016, almost 2017 and I am in severe pain in my neck. I had xrays done 2 weeks ago and the radiologist said "You have moderate spondylitis of the cervical neck". I know soon, the pain is going to get really bad. I am thinkin about going to Europe to have neck surgery. Its much cheaper and they have better care. I will let you know how it goes!! God Bless you !!

    Thx for your video. Do you have any updates how your doing long term? I'm concerned getting this surgery due to risk of needing more fusions. PS can not believe you had to suffer so long without an MRI! Especially after car accident.

    This is a real nice video, Leah. I had a cervical fusion around 4 years ago. I don't remember any electrodes. My doctor was excellent. (Arne S. Sungarin MD in Worcester, MA). He used bone from a bone bank and replaced 2 disks in my neck. The X-rays of the work are very cool - hunk of titanium and 6 screws. The neck brace came off in a week. I lost a small number of nerves in my right arm along with the muscles they serve, goodbye guitar. Thank God for wonderful medicine and people like you. I hope you have healed well.

    • @chronicallypep5
      @chronicallypep5  8 років тому +1

      Thank you Michael, I appreciate that!! Sorry about the guitar :( Now having gone through this I often asked myself how people handled these types of injures without the medicine, surgical knowledge we have now. I was in so much pain. I can't even imagine how I could have continued one in that state of pain. That is really amazing that you only had the neck brace for a week!! I hated that contraption!!! hahaha I am healing very well. I was in very good hands....... an awesome God and a great doctor. I do have some pain still but it is nothing like before. I take Aspirin and or Flexeral when it is too much. Stretching helps too. I have about 90% feeling back in all my fingers as well. I am dealing with carpal tunnel now ( known as double crush syndrome ) and wouldn't you know it I may have Planters Fasciitis ( self diagnosed ). I need to get back to the doctor sometime soon. For now I am back at work enjoying my students and will set up appointments in the near future. Just happy to not be in the extreme pain I was in prior. :) I hope you too are healing well. Blessings!

    I was told today I need same surgery. Your story sounds exactly like mine! I was in an accident years ago and have never been right. I have pain on and off through out the years. About 3 weeks ago I thought I had slept on neck wrong, pain got worse not better. I have been to ER, Urgent Care and now Ortho. A few days after the pain started and was getting worse I woke up and could not feel my index or middle finger. I am going on 2 1/2 weeks with numb fingers! The pain I have been in all the way down my arm into my hand has been a pain I have not been able to tolerate. I have broken bones and this pain was right there with it, if not worse. I was told today surgery was it or I had to live with it. I ask if the feeling in fingers would come back and was told it may never come back! I am so scared to have surgery but this pain is a pain I cant live with. Mine is C6 and C7, I am guessing that is why we have same exact symptoms. Thank you for video, I need to research more to understand what I am about to go through.

      Yea, my hair is very thin. I was like, " Great. just what I need on top of everything else." But we discovered the baby oil took it right out. I wished I had known that the 30 minutes prior to all the tugging and ripping though. haha
      Oh well. Hopefully I can save someone else the trouble. :) Best to you!!

    I just had ACDF surgery 5 weeks ago. Was in a car accident in 2018. Did everything possible from chiropractor, medical massage, physical therapy, spinal and lumbar injections, etc....so with continued pain did x-ray and MRI was determined discs were pressing on nerves and was starting to lose use of my right side, so after 2nd opinion I had the surgery.....prayers to anyone who had to go thru this.

    Hi Leah, I see a cross in the background and figure you are such a kind Christian who is doing this video to help people. I need to do the exact same surgery, except one surgeon is recommending using ROIC plastic (he says it will put less pressure on the other discs) and the other surgeon is suggesting cadaver bone with plating. Any thoughts or advice? Thanks and may God bless you:)

    • @chronicallypep5
      @chronicallypep5  8 років тому

      Thank you! Sorry to hear you need the same type of surgery. I am going to refrain from giving advice about your condition because I am not medically qualified to give advise as to which surgery might be better for your condition. I do know however that the type of surgery I had done does tend to put strain on the discs adjacent to the fusion. My doctor did it such a way that it will put less pressure but will I believe the key word is LESS pressure..... which then means there is still pressure. :(
      I have never heard of the other surgery. I am going to google that. I hope you do well with whatever surgery you choose!! BLESSINGS!! :)

    Just saw this video, I'm surprised they let you sleep without a brace 3 weeks out. I had cervical fusion from C3 - T1 with titanium 6" metal bar inserted in the neck. I was in my brace for 6 weeks then a soft collar for sleeping. BTW, you probably already know there's scare cream you can use to remove or reduce any scaring after you've healed. Hope you're doing well.

    Hi! I happened to stumbled upon your video and I'd like to ask you a couple of questions, if you don't mind. First, was the pain that you felt was sort of like cramp-like that radiated from your back into your arms, particularly your forearms? Did the pain prevent you from stretching your neck either to one side or to pulling it back? I believe I have a similar condition, which I've been treating with steroid injections directly to the afflicted area (the lower cervical, between the neck and the back). Now, while the injections provide temporary relief, they're just that, temporary (6 months or so). Did you also have to take steroid shots or were at some point recommended by your physician to take those injections before going through surgery? I'm kind of curious because I'm sort of afraid of having surgery. What was the total recovery time for you? BTW, I"m also a school teacher and can't really afford having surgery except during the summer... Anyway, thank you so much for sharing your experience! I'm sure it's always helpful to share these types of medical experience for other people who're going through a similar situation. :)

    • @chronicallypep5
      @chronicallypep5  8 років тому

      Hello there....... First question, yes. The pain however was intense. More than a cramp. I made horrible muscle spasms as well that went up and down my arm. Mainly the upper arms and trap area. I tried injections once.... No relief at all. I took steroids to no relief. Recovery was 6 weeks. Sorry you are dealing with pan. :( I hope you do not end up needing surgery and can find the right remedy!!!

    • @norbac
      @norbac 8 років тому

      Thank you so much for you reply! One final question, if I may please, did you also consider disc replacement surgery as opposed to fusion? If so, why prevented you from going through the disc replacement operation? Thanks again and I'm glad you recovered well. :)

    • @chronicallypep5
      @chronicallypep5  7 років тому

      #1 that surgery is not offered where I live or anywhere nearby. #2 It is not 'usually' done on more then 1 level. ( although I have read it is being offered now ) #3 I was in soooo much pain, I would have gone in immediately for ANY surgery to help had they offered..... even if they had offered a wooden disc. hahaha My daughter's best friend's mother was the P.A. to the neurosurgeon I went with and they both thankfully answered many of my questions calmed my fears. I mean I know going under the knife has its risks and I know fusions often lead to other fusions but there was just simply no comparison to living the way I was so getting in for surgery, finding relief and healing was first on my mind. Thank you!!! :)

    hi and you look great! I just had mine a week ago, C5/6 fusion, just overnight, up and moving around is the key to recovery.I did not have to wear a brace, but not able to lift 10 lbs yet and 5 day with no driving. The pain going down my right arm was bad, and in my left, right hand 2 ring finger and pinky finger and ridge of hand were numb, but they were like that in a earlier surgery. Also before the surgury ny whole neck would go numb when I was driving for a long distance, no more of that.And after that, well the swallowing was bad, felt like i swallowed 10 chicken bones.Ice on the back of my neck helped, but before was was very dizzy at times, like in th shower hope that goes away. I am most worried about my scar too....yuck hope it goes down soon.cuz i got hair i need shave around it all in all not too bad, I had the bessssssst sergeon in the Northeat, his name is Dr Paul K Maurer,. Personally i would never go thru PT again. Buy anyway I just wanted to say hag in there keep moving ok, you look geat

    Hi Leah, great vid, I recently had acdf surgery and about 3 weeks ago.I was just wondering if you experienced trap/shoulder pain. I'm having trouble lifting my arm, which was fine before surgery. Could it be do to the incision or the way I was placed on the table during surgery? Any help would be great! Thanks

      Hello there :)
      Thank you. I too have trap/shoulder pain. It has been a constant battle for me post surgery. I take over the counter pain med and or Flexeral to help. I take those a couple times a month but have pain several times weekly. Some days more painful then others. I understand it to be the norm from this type of surgery. Not a great thing, but defiantely better then the before state I was in. I was told it should let up in about year. I am almost at my 1 year mark and it is still going and may even seem to be more frequent to be honest.

    I have a question about your neck brace. I am scheduled for ACDF on March 8th, and the collar they gave me, is a piece of crap... lol, it covers my whold mouth, way to big. I dont see how this will work. The first one they tried on me felt a little tight on my throat, so they gave me a larger one. I think the smaller one would have worked if I could have adjusted it. Anyway, thinking about buying one on my own. Def taking this one back to my surgeions office tomorrow.

    • @chronicallypep5
      @chronicallypep5  7 років тому

      They had me fitted with my neck brace prior to surgery so the fit was correct. If it doesn't fit correctly, they said it would not be insured. I wasn't even allowed to make any adjustments to it. They also gave me two others in the hospital though. I alternated them because sometimes I would just get restless in it and needed change. I called and got that okayed before I did that though. I see this post was made sometime back. Sorry for the late response...... Did they give you a new one? How are you healing?

  • @novalynnleilashea
    @novalynnleilashea 7 років тому

    Hi. You may want to mention the reason for sore throat. I just had my cervical fusion 4 days ago.... general anesthesia requires a breathing tube down ones throat which is the reason. Also, they did not use electrodes on my head. I had a blue surgery cap on the entire time and my hair was up in a bun. Thank you.

    • @chronicallypep5
      @chronicallypep5  7 років тому

      Hi there. I appreciate your comment, however the breathing tube is not the only cause for sore throat ( and or swallowing complications ) following ACDF surgery. Many patients experience difficulty swallowing and a sore throat post ACDF surgery because of the manipulation of the esophagus. They have to move the esophagus and voice box aside to reach the cervical discs. This causes swelling and pain in many patients. Sometimes it also causes voice problems post surgery too. My doctor warned me prior to surgery about it. She carefully walked me through many different risks and scenarios. That is great that you did not have all the nasty glue in your hair from the electrodes!! It sure was a bear!! I know each injury, surgery, and recovery will vary to each patient. But for those who aren't expecting the electrodes like me and come across it...... This may give them a bit of insight. :) Hope you are recovery well.

    How long did your swallowing issues last for? My mom had 3 level ACDF and ended up on a feeding tube after. At first she was coughing all the time not able to manage her own secretions. Now almost 2 months later she's doing alot better with no coughing but we haven't tried foods yet. Water with thickener test she still coughed a little. Did your swallowing return to basins and how long it took?

    • @chronicallypep5
      @chronicallypep5  7 років тому

      First I want to say, " I am sorry to hear your mom is dealing with that!!" That has got to be so difficult to deal with. I hope things get better soon!! I dealt with swallowing issues for several months. While swallowing did improve alot, it never went back to how it was before. I still feel as though there is a pocket in the back of my throat where stuff gets caught up and no matter how hard I try to swallow it just kinda stays stuck. Its minimal, but noticeable for me. I hope your mom improves more and regains that muscle control. Prayers and Best wishes!!

      Leah Leanne this past week I gave my mom a small bite of pizza to chew and spit out. She ended up swallowing it and same thing happen. some of it went down while bits got stuck and she brought it back up. How do you normally get it all the food down? Does the food ever go down the airway?

    • @chronicallypep5
      @chronicallypep5  7 років тому +1

      This sounds really gross but sense you asked.......
      Sometimes things would get stuck in my throat. I have never had a large amount of food but rather bits and pieces of food, saliva, phlem and pills. Anyhow sometimes I have felt it just dislodge and go down eventually. Sometimes moments later sometimes hours. One time in paticular ( not too long ago ) I felt my throat bring the gunk back up. I didn't even know the gunk was there, I just felt my throat contract and next thing I knew I was spitting gross awful gunk out that came from the pocket up my throat and was then on the back of my mouth. who knows how long that stuff was stuck there!! I know super gross!! But good that my body just naturally expelled it. My throat felt super clear afterwards for days!!

    LOL! I'm in hysterics right now! I didn't wear my own hair for the procedure. I wore a WIG!😆😆😆😆 OMG! They didn't mention anything about doing that. I just threw my wig on for the surgery, because I knew that it would be under a bonnet. Please tell me that they don't do it for everyone. 😄😄 OMG!

    Don’t do ACDF if you are a candidate for an artificial disc(s) because ACDF is old school and fusion causes more friction on other discs above and below, a condition called ASD Adjacent Segment Degeneration (read up in this). This can require another surgery 6 to 12 years later.
    My research found there are specialist surgeons that offer artificial discs, however many are in big Cities. Example: RUSH Chicago Dr Harel a Duetsch is a neurosurgeon that has performed thousands. The small inconvenience of a big City travel is a small price to get your life back in order considering this is your spine. The key is find a specialist to qualify you as a candidate.
    I flew to Barcelona Spine Center for my artificial discs because the US FDA is slow to approve disc used by world specialist for a decade for cost and other reasons I rather not speculate. I wanted discs that had a center nucleus that had a cushion effect to help avoid ASD down the line. I also have 6 degrees of articulation in each disc, just like a natural human disc.
    I had ACDF fusion at two levels lumbar 14 years ago. The recovery was painful, long and arduous. Then over the course of 10 years it wore out (ASD) the next level up, so I did my research and flew to Barcelona in 2016. I was out of serious pain immediately. After a few days in the hospital, we stayed at a hotel for ten more days and walked 15 miles in the ten days as a tourist and had a blast. Recovery was easy and required some PT.
    I returned to Barcelona in 2018 to have two level of disc implanted. Neck surgery is harder as there is swelling a bit and it’s hard to swallow. Deep massage therapy worked to restore that. But my MF pain in the neck was eliminated almost immediately. I had this neck problem over ten years, so I have last muscles to retrain and sit up straighter too. Electro stim acupuncture works really well to break up tight muscles and it causes fresh blood to circulate in tissue areas to accelerate tissue repair.
    I paid cash $26k for one level lumbar and $35k for the double level neck. No insurance refunds. I will work a couple more years before retirement to pay. If however you work for a progressive private large employer who self funds their insurance, they may pay for it. Few, but some do. It’s way lower costs even with travel costs. The only thing I paid extra for was travel and the hotel stay after. I need to work for a couple more years before retirement to pay, but that’s okay. I have so much more energy and focus now,
    .
    I had the Spinal Kinetics M6L Lumbar Disc and the ASP double level discs in my neck. The good news in the US is there is hope that the Spinal Kinetics Cervical might get approved. The FDA is slow and costly. Spinal Kinetics is made in the US and used in Europe for over ten years.... what’s wrong with that picture? The fact is the artificial disc was invented in Germany in the mid 70’s by a woman Olympic athlete surgeon and this caused Europe to be the epicenter of excellence.
    Unfortunately many US Surgeons were only trained in ACDF, so that is what they push. That is why a specialist is essentially necessary in my opinion. Do your research. Travel to a big City is a tiny inconvenience if that’s needed.
    Good luck in your recovery. Don’t forget PT. I hope you get your life back!

      I would imagine so they wanted to do it at Thanksgiving and I have no family here and everybody was out of town. The Dr. Wanted to do it the day he saw me please show me the ball bearings and metal rods that he wanted to put in my neck and then he was going over what he wanted to do with my hands. So I would imagine that we will have a consultation on the 31st of August and then surgery I've already had 2 rounds of shots in my neck all that did was make it worse

      +Leah Leanne I also have the same problem with them delaying the MRI and CT scan I went to and a half years I've had six surgeries on my left leg titanium rods and kneecap. I was beginning to think I was a hypochondriac since they were looking at me crazy everytime I go into the hospital with a severe pain. I basically had to beg for the MRI and CT scans I'm just really tired of all this I know you can relate to that

  • @dread_op
    @dread_op 8 років тому

    I have a scheduled surgery soon and having doubts about getting it. My doctor recommended it but never really talked about alternative s to surgery. i have severe left shoulder and back and numbness in my arm. the MRI did show herniated disks. I just want this pain to leave and folks and family are asking why i didnt get a 2nd opinion. i jus dont want to go through physical therapy to cope with pain.

    • @chronicallypep5
      @chronicallypep5  8 років тому

      Man I relate to this. I wanted a second opinion as well but I couldn't wait through the pain. I knew getting in with someone else would take time. I was taking several pain meds just to function and I was still super miserable. Having surgery was like instant relief for me. I know going under the knife should always be last option, but I was at a point where I woulda just moved into the hospital and refused to leave unless they did surgery. I felt it was at a point to be considered an emergancy. :( I cant even imagine going through physical therapy with that extreme pain. I hope they get you feeling well soon!!! Best wishes!!

    For those of you having the surgery, dont expect the same experience as someone else. Each ACDF is different and result in different post OP symptoms. Sweet video but very misleading.

    I'm scheduled to meet with the neurosurgeon tomorrow it's been 2 years that I've been going through this and it took them about a year-and-a-half to do the CT scan and the MRI that's when they found out how jacked up I was c 3 4 5 & 6 need Fusion I also have carpal tunnel they're going to do that as well I also have spinal spondylosis switches curvature spine can be brought on by traumatic injury and a bulging disc in the middle of my back this was all due to a motorcycle accident A truck hit me

    • @tramos6358
      @tramos6358 8 років тому

      Steve Rogers I wouldn't recommend having any kind of surgery in California. My significant other had this done a little over a year ago. And he had the worst experience ever. I see the doctor's here not do anything to help patients with the extreme pain that they are in. I have ever seen this happen to anyone in other states.

    • @chronicallypep5
      @chronicallypep5  7 років тому

      I don't guess I have any serious side effects. I mean, I wont ever be the same as I was prior to the herniated discs but I sure feel pretty darn good compared to prior to surgery. I was so miserable prior to surgery that the pain had me in a place where pain was constant and life was miserable. I woke in pain ( morning and middle of the night ), cried out in pain all the time, took so many pain pills just to get by enough that I wasn't busting down doors in the E.R. and so on. I washorribly miserable prior to surgery. I am now in pain here and there but nothing near as intense. Post surgery deal with stiff neck, shoulder pain ( nothing near the pain before ), stiffness and I have what is called double crush syndrome. ( double crushed carpal nerves ) I am needing carpal tunnel surgery now. I am post-poning until the pain is intense.

    Thanks for your video. I am right now 3 weeks and one day after surgery.. and.. I woke up half paralyzed in my arms. And I hate it. Not only half paralyzed but it also comes with pain.. Tami, first I want to say that I am very sorry you are dealing with that. I can't even imagine how that must feel. I sure hope that as swelling and healing takes place, that you regain movement in your arms. My high school friend had cervical surgery and woke with some paralysis. I sure hate that that happens sometimes. The neck brace is the worst part of healing!! I actually cried over it a few times. it is so uncomfortable!!! I finally called the doctor and asked to take it off to sleep and she said, " Sure..... I wrote in your discharge papers that you could take it off to sleep after a few days." I had been wearing mine nonstop for weeks!!! I was so mad at myself for that!! hahaha I really hope you begin to find relief and feel better. Please keep me updated!! Best regards
