Because the imperial navy isn't suicidal! Their ships are worth more the entire regiments a piece, and they see the bigger picture. Cadia could not be held! The order to evacuate came from for the commodore of the Phalanx itself!

@@Boostmeister69 The bigger picture is that each battleship, battlecruiser or grand cruiser lost are, as far as I’m aware, irreplaceable. A single battleship takes decades to over a century to build and each large capital ship lost holding a hopeless battle is one less to hold back Chaos elsewhere leading to the loss of other systems or even entire other systems. The Guard can afford to spend hundreds of millions of lives holding a single world but the badly overstretched Imperial Navy cannot afford to spend fleets and task forces so casually, they gave everything they could to hold Cadia but were eventually forced to fall back in order to ensure the survival of the wider Imperium in the war to come.

There's a book called Cadian Honor that follows a handful of Cadians after the battle.
It's better than decent. Full of stiff upper lips, Grim Determination, and Survivor's Guilt. I recommend it.
Here's hoping when we get the astra militarum 9th edition codex we get new veteran cadian models, some grizzled badass survivors and if we really wana dream, plastic models for the other famous regiments

iirc there was a narative line around the apocalypse supplement release that had remnants of the Cadians baiting Abaddon into a protracted war in another system to pull him away from the direct push towards Terra; where it ends he was intent on destroying them completely & commited to that before moving on.

Bro, I just came here after finishing Space wolf saga from Baldemorts channel. That monologue you gave as the space wolf priest talking to the other chapter's brother during a bonfire.. I listened to that single moment like 15times already. Brought a tear to my eyes the first time i heard it.. truly I felt it in my soul, the honor of the space wolves.

The most inspirational and realistic thing you can tell a guardsmen is that they fight and will always fight a 2 front eternal war. You tell the guard that they fight for the emperor here in the materium while the emperor fights for humanity in the imaterium. All of humanity fights back to back with the emperor and the emperor fights back to back with humanity.
IMO nothing in 40k compares to the grit and tenacity of the Cadians. The Plant broke before the Guard. Much respect.
It was the conversation surrounding "Cadia Stands" and the words "The Planet Broke Before The Guard" that got me into 40k and was the first book I picked up. And now I'm into 40k for the books and lore. The idea a force of humans who stood their ground so hard to defend their home and the rest of humanity they had to be told that the ground could not carry their march, a bulwark that outlast a planet, and regular humans were shoulder to shoulder with a courage so unbridled that horrors from another dimension could not break it was amazing.
I'm a snob about writing and found it wasn't the greatest however the content there was excellent. I'm a staunch fan of the Imperial Guard because of the destruction they face in overwhelming odds, yet still the guard rises to meet the enemies of mankind. The Astra Militarum is the bedrock on which humanity requires as, if humanity were to go without, it would find itself breaking like the Planet of Cadia.

There's a sequel called "Cadian Honor" that I haven't read yet. I've heard that it's nowhere as good as the first one though...

Cadia never fell, for it last and greatest defense will always be in our hearts. Lest we forget how much the enemy threw for a phyrric victory.
Pyrrhic? Abbadon split fucking reality in two, given chaos a balance-breaking win, for about the cost of the ruined parts of the Will of Eternity.
A phyrric victory over Cadia, is more then victory enough to bring about a storm of chaos that will tear the galaxy worse then Horus Heresy.

@@Kristian.B.Kristiansen his actions brought a Primarch back, Awakened the God Emperor, empowered a Aldari God of the dead, United the Imperium against Chaos, oh ya and made the Silent King turn a massive portion of his forces and power to build more Pylon gates to close the rift. Abbadon painted a giant attack chaos sign on themselves to the rest of the galaxy. Go read all the lore its not going that great for Chaos.
It's one of my favorite stories in 40k, honestly. The moment for ordinary humans to shine - showing how truly the Imperial Guard is the heart and strength of the Imperium.

Iirc it took our best friend Vulkhan, a perpetual, a primarch, sacrificing himself to kill the ork known as the Beast. This is just 1 of many examples where Primarchs made the difference

Cadia falling was such a big event that even I, as someone only very minorly adjacent to 40k at the time who was not really involved with any 40k circles online, heard about it nearly immediately as it was effectively shouted from the rooftops online. Cadia falling very breifly made it into *mainstream* internet discorse and was mentioned widely over the entire western net. It was a short period, but a very loud one, such was the groundbreaking nature of it
I remember easily 15+years ago reading a White Dwarf and the cover was "Abbadons 13th Crusade" and the cover was him holding the planet in his claw. And he was crushing it. Was an amazing piece of art. Since then I knew it would fall. But a Black Stone Fortress into the planet? say whaaaaa
It was an interesting way to advance the storyline of the universe and show that the war would only get even worse. Now we have to see where the narrative expands to next.

As a diehard Cadian player this moment, the last defense of their home is what had me on board from go. Even if say Catachan or Steel Legion was the "default" choice for the guard Cadians would be my faction.
If theres any story in wh40k that needs to be a movie or show this would be it. I almost cry everytime I read about cadia it is a very emotional story

When I came back after a 10-years break, I just flat out did not believe it when my old buddies told me that Cadia had fallen. Litterally.
I play eldar. We don't care about Monki and the emperor... yet even I felt part of my soal die at the loss of Cadia... Cadia the boys in green. CADIA the place that had held Choas at bay for so long.... gone...
Cadia will live on in the regiments that survived... but their always will be a void in thought who knew the place beffor it was turned to ash...
Cadia falling honestly reminds me of how the Rebels in Star Wars felt about the fall of Jedha
It became a rallying cry for the rebellion and Cadia falling honestly seems to have had the same effect
Cadians are the only reason I ever had an inkling of interest in making a guard army. They are the truest of the Imperium's sons.
I felt the same way as you did, Rho. I too have been in 40k universe for 20ish years, and when I heard that Cadia fell, it felt like hearing the US had fallen.

5:12 You are completely correct. I've been with 40k for about 16 years and yeah. I always knew Lion or Bobby would wake up, or Russ or Jaggy would come out of some portal somewhere to lead the Imperium back onto a better path. But Cadia falling? Nope. That was what I could have never guessed.
Even the Orks (scientifically proven to be the happiest sentient species in the galaxy) are sad, for the Cadians gave Abbadon a good ole Krumpin'
Plot twist: Cawl has constructed a new Cadia that is placed back into the Cadian Gate.

I have one of my own creation; the Cepharine 13th Armored Battlegroup. It was fighting on Kindi's World, pulled out for reconstitution. It adopted fragments of other battle-savaged outfits. Allows a bit of flexibility as I see it.

I have to say that; the evacuation scene of Cadia Stands had to have been the saddest part of the whole book, I nearly started crying just reading through that book. Like that one regiment who made it to their evac zone only to be ambushed and be picked off by the Iron Warriors, or the evac ships who got their cargo but never made it to the transports, or even the ones who attempted to go back and pick up more Guardsmen, only to never return. Or worse still when Minka Lesk and her old unit didn't even realize the evacuation was going on until the building they were in came down on top of them and crawl out to the surface only to find their home becoming a daemon world.

As a guy that knows WH40K since 20 years, but just gotten into the RPG, I have to admit that the fall of Cadia naturaly is no shock to me. I knew the line "Cadia stands" and had a vague idea of what Cadia is, but if you are not emotionaly invested in something yet, its hard to feel something, of course.
I think that WH40K got mature just now. In the past it was all about "Mighty spacemarine god kill good, mighty uberhuman will crush who is not good. Praise the guy who dont want be god." to me. But now its starting to get substance. And the fall of Cadia clearly has a part in this.
There are a lot of actual stories of Soldiers marching across dangerous terrain to reach their extraction point (some finding their escape as problematic as the Cadians).

@The Exemplary Englishman Worst part for abbadon is that the Cadia had more than one planet iirc, so he just wasted not only one of the most expensive and difficult to replace weapons/fortresses in the galaxy, but also countless chaos space marines and minions in blowing up one world without actually getting a secure route through the system

Why were they abandoned?
Because the Black Legion held overwhelming superiority in space, and the Eye was expanding to swallow the planet. The evacuation of Cadia was a complete catastrophe for the Imperium, the battle of Cadia was a devastating defeat. Creeds speech was bravado and propaganda.
Not enough ships in operation to bring them to orbit, the navy was almost annihilated by the black fleet
Many of the transports were blown straight out of the sky. A lot of pilots gave their lives flying back and forth picking up whatever troops they could until they were finally shot down.

Cadia destruction is astonishing like Star Trek's Vulcan destruction lore wise.
If I was a Cadian on the surface, I would cry - not for my dying world but for the rest of Imperium. And then, I would laugh. Because the chosen of the Dark Gods, the superhuman 10 000 years old nightmare was stopped by humble guardsmen and the death of my world is not a testament to his power, but his weakness and impotent rage and frustration.
In Imperium most people don't know about chaos and Inquisition is trying to keep this knowledge even from military personel at all costs.
With that in mind what were Cadians told they were stationed there for?
How do PDF forces and guardsman react to deamonic incursions? How do they feel being attacked by the astartes? Do they think their allies betrayed them?
I dunno, man, but I guess since Cadia Gate (all the planets around) know very well the existence of the great enemy Inquisition and others would not attack them. Some other planets and regiments don't know about daemons and stuffs. Cadia was at the hell's mouth. Now the Galaxy was sliced in two I guess many other planets would not suffer the cleansing of Inquisition.
So I'm an older player 2nd ed. And i took a break from the game and lore around 5/6ed. I'm just got back into it at the end of 9th. And catching up on the lore is nuts. Thanks wolf lord for everything.

Cadia didn't fall. the planet may have been shattered, the ground beneath the guards feet may have been torn asunder BUT CADIA STANDS FOREVER IN THE HEARTS OF THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE IMPERIUM. FOR THE EMPEROR.
Indeed dude, well said, been in the lore for a longtime and was a surprise they destroyed Cadia however the eye was always eventually going to expand and it was definitely the right move for the story.
Also though in story the planet is gone, Cadia is now an example, it has become an idea and those are unkillable, so really it is still there, just that there is everywhere now.
I have faith that Lord commander Creed and the 8th continue to fight the ruinous powers on what's left of Cadia within the warp.

This was an amazing story. Just think how awesome it would have been written by ADB.
The Fall of Cadia really inspired me to try to take my ordinary guard units and give them a more "cadian" feel. Each vehicle bears the name Cadia and also is marked in the Cadian blue and red as well.
The Imperial guard held Failbaddon back more than TWELVE TIMES, just imagine if they had better equipment and more leaders like creed/
The real reason for Cadia's fall is that the Cadian guard minis are great for lesser guard units. This means people won't buy the newest and more expensive armies being pushed.

@@daniellindsey7025 The Will of eternity was destroyed by the Phalanx earlier in the war, Abbadon just made brilliant use of a setback,by using its ruins. I know the trailer shows a fully intact fortress crash, but read the lore, it is not true.

The Battle of Cadia demonstrates that the true heroes of the Imperium aren't the Primarchs or the Space Marines... But the Normal and Average Humans of The Imperial Guard giving everything for Humanity and their loved ones , *Thats Humanity's strength.*
This makes me annoyed at those who claim 40k is no longer "grimdark". Its never grimdark for chaos, they have always been as cheese as Cobra in old old G.I. Joe cartoons, plane hit with missle and somehow parachute to safety. If the Imperium doesn't get screwed its cry cry "no longer grimdark", but Fulgrum takes a virus bomb to the face and its "tee hee hee chaos cheese yay". Kabonda, or what's his spelling, killed by Sanguinius comes back over and over. The cheese of 40k is Imperium takes losses and chaos gets do overs.
Astra Militarum needs some love and attention from GW. I fell in love with them after DoW: Winter Assault and it pains me to see them ignored (or as in the case with Cadia battered). I'd love to see them, and other neglected armies get the "Primaris" treatment.

Not desperation!! The use of the ruin of the will of eternity was a masterstroke. A perfect way to use a temporary setback to win a game-breaking victory.
Pffft, not even. He couldn't finish the fight proper and ran from the living saint with his tail between his legs.
Edit: I will grant you that his use of the Blackstone fortress had devastating consequences but it was a move of desperation. In my not so humble opinion.
@@Dakooties Why desperation? He set the move up long before the black legions attack on the Pylon field, so he had that insurance.
And he beat Celestine in their fight, only being prevented from killing her by the sacrifice of hundreds of guardsmen. The text is crystal clear, that he was the stronger fighter.
He teleported out, because the eye was closing, and it was leave or get stuck on the planet with no clean way out. He wasn't defeated, he made the risk vs reward calculation. He failed to break the guard, but he handedly won the battle.
If I lived in 40k I’d just want to live on a pleasure world and just be a scholar during the day and depraved servant of Slanesh during the night. Being an imperial guard would be the worst!

That book was an impact full and emotional read. Cadia's fall was more tragic thank Tanith's. It sucks to be a galactic orphan in the Imperium. 😔
All that shocked me is that failbaddon the harmless actually succeeded at something for once...
I know right! all he ever succeeded at was bringing the largest Chaos Legion together, obtaining the Daemon sword, punishing the Imperium during the gothic wars, destroying the Necron phylons, killing Sigismund, and destroying Cadia !

5:46 why wouldn't you dream that cadia would fall? It was well established that the strength of chaos was growing whilst the imperium waned, it was inevitable that one of the black crusades would eventually crush the fortress world. This is like saying "you never would have dreamed that continuously dropping anvils onto a crowded street from a roof would eventually kill someone" it was just a matter of time is what I'm saying.
