You know, I am curious how Craftworld Aeldari and exodites take prisoners, and what the Guardsmen would try to do to escape. Chaos, Orkz, Tau, Drukhari, Necrons, and nids I understand fairly well.
@@williamings773 That actually makes a lot of sense: capture a commissar, high-ranking guardsman, priest, astartes, etc, and then they can use them to exchange prisoners or obtain soul stones. That or future good-will depending on how they gained these human prisoners and who they are giving them to.
Wish I remember which source book it was in but there was a previous short story about orcs capturing humans. Think it was around the time of launch of the epic system rules.
Rho, me owd mucker. You need to read some of the commisar Cain novels or Anarch from the ghosts series. In the former the orcs invasion of Perlia do take slaves and that is not an isolated example and in the latter a guardsman who could give Marbo a run for his money takes on a cultists muster point. Being taken captive is remarkably easy considering in the 40k universe as unaugmented humans are quite squishy and not overly robust so being injured and knocked unconscious is easily accomplished.
It depends on the regiment and the writer. Mostly they are outside of the direct command structure and act as morale officers but also a sort of "quality control officer" that can take over if the command is killed or is judged by higher ups or by the Commissar themselves to be negligent or a coward.
This is correct. Though they march with the units they are attached to, no officer of any rank can technically order a commissar to do anything. This is important because a Commissar's right to order summary execution extends to officers as well as the rank and file, as this story alludes.
LOL ! The poor orcs hoped, their food wouldent spoil, if they leaf it alive and then they get a spoiled officer. Thanks to Gork and Mork, they got the inspiration, to catch a commisar, to keep the food fresh. :D
I don’t think the lieutenant was making the right decision but it seems the commissar keep undermining the order of there commander officer which in the end cause confusion in the ranks on the guards and a lot of the time commissar don’t seem to make the most tactical decision and when the commander tells you to do one thing then a commissar decide they don’t like that plan it can cause massive side effects throughout there war front
One assumes that guardsmen would fight to the death, but if a mob of orks wants to take you alive, well, an overwhelming horde of super-tough close quarters specialists who can literally tank every hit they take and replace every loss they suffer is gonna take you. I remember reading one story where an ork kommando was getting bonked on the head by a guardsman's spent laspistol while the ork and his mate pulled the poor bastard apart at the joints. Guy was still fighting, but it didn't matter.
Actually the imperium itself rarely take prisoners. But Ork, Dark Eldar, Eldar, Tau, Chaos (as sacrifice for the dark gods) heck even Necrons sometimes take prisoners. The only faction that really doesn't do that are Tyranids.
Actually even they kinda sorta take prisioners. Memeory is hazy but like I think some kind of utility nid for thier bioships requires a host becasue it's a parasitic creature in the early part of it's life or something. But yeah, most nids just eat ya and even when they take you prisoner it's still tenhnically only to eat ya, just slower and in a different manner.
Easy scenario where Orks could get prisoners. Urban engagement, Guard fight for days, but last Ork push topples lots of buildings. Some Guardsman survive but fall unconscious and the Orks take them for more fighting later.
Being taken prisoner by anybody, any faction in the grimdark future seems... less than desirable. As a Guardsman the Orks might narrowly beat out the other factions in terms of being your captors for one simple reason: whatever they plan to do with you will is more likely to kill you quickly, whether the Orks intend it to or not. The Tau, dark Eldar, and even chaos forces will have an easier time keeping you alive so they can do more heretical things to you.
Orks are actually pretty good about keeping their human slaves in good enough shape. Work them a lot, sure, but are pretty cunning when it comes to not pushing too far. And violence is unlikely to come from them because the Orks would find it incredibly boring fighting mere squishy humies that aren't in an army or decently armed. Heck, usually Orks flat out ignore non-combatants and just focus on killing soldiers and looting everything they can. Fighting a WAAAGH!!! is less of a defense against a murder spree and more a defense against a house robber. Heck, Orks don't really wage "war" as we understand it. They go pillaging and having fun fighting anyone willing to fight. Anyone not willing to fight they try to provoke but if that fails then they get bored and leave with their loot, their victims more or less unharmed.
@@midgetydeath for the sake of the trillions of regular people trying to live in the 40K universe I hope you are right. The Orks that hit Rynn's World for example were all to happy to slaughter the peaceful farmers of that planet.
@@Lmolina90 That's because everyone is brainwashed into being a fanatical horde frothing at the mouth at the sight of aliens. It's pretty normal in 40k. Part of what makes Hive Worlds so hard to invade, for example, is that everyone and their kitchen sink will attack alien invaders in a screaming frenzy. It's rare to find survivors of Ork attacks or Ork slaves because it's rare for people not to throw themselves at the aliens. That, and that the Orks do have to cause damage and kill people to try and get a violent reaction. If that fails, they get bored and ragequit. This is, I think, the reason why Orks didn't overrun the galaxy during or any time before the Age of Strife (remember that the Eldar were pretty crushed several times in their history, yet the Orks didn't come running). Simply that no one was willing to perform human wave suicide attacks on them so they found everyone boring, which limited their reproduction through war and heavily restricted their interest in expanding. Until the Imperium came along and gave them all the war they could ever want.
@@midgetydeath That is one of the darker parts of humanity in 40K. The "xeno=bad" and the "if you don't try to kill them then you are a traitor" mentality gives the Orks all the war they could ever want. I'm sure that Rynn's world was a bit of an exception. An agri world without hive cities. Normally, the Crimson Fists space marines there would be plenty of fun but they took huge casualties from a malfunctioning planetary defense missile that leveled their headquarters before the Orks even hit the ground. Plus the Orks were led by a guy with the title of "Arch Arsonist" to live up to.
Let's go down the list: *Tyranid:* Turned into Hybrid, fate worse than death. *Dark Eldar:* Fate much, MUCH worse than death. *Eldar:* Often nice, surprisingly, as their prisoners are usually civilians relocated to off an Eldar world, or Rogue Traders kept for a bit and then released. In some rare cases, people might be kept on Craft Worlds indefinitely. *Orks:* Brutal and short lives, usually. As with everything Orky though, you can expect some very weird exceptions, like if Orky Hammer needs an audience for his 326 Decibel concert. *Tau:* Also depends, as one might be sterilized and slowly worked to death in a secret concentration camp, or treated surprisingly well, if they're trying to 'flip' you. *Chaos:* See "Dark Eldar" *Astartes/Guard:* An interesting case, since ordinary soldiers may have zero idea their governor is rebelling. If the Astartes believe this to be the case, prisoners may be treated quite well, as they are readied to be turned against the actual traitors. Full on traitor prisoners can look forward to the Penal Legion life style. *Necron:* Seemingly no consistency, as some prisoners are allowed to leave their planet largely unmolested, while most are interrogated and killed (presumably.) Then there's that one guy who takes prisoners on as guests while his servants quietly kill you off because their lord is actually just bonkers.
Ork runtherds actually have a habit of taking prisoners and training them as slaves, to the extent the runtherd will even go out of their way to learn the language of their captive.

Thing is war is hectic some of those soldiers probably got knocked out and lost consciousness during the battle and got imprisoned that way others might have reasoned that if they can escape still alive they'd be Abel to live to kill more xenos others probably wanted to survive
Maybe the best Xenos to be imprisoned by would be craft world Eldar. It all depends on the details. They want some change in the future that they can see would happen if they took prisoners instead of killing people. And that change probably would mean they need us alive and to get a decent opinion of them. And they have one advantage over Tau, they could also figure out how to get us back to humanity alive to cause a change they want.
The Lieutenant outranked everyone in the cell except for the Commissar, she was outside the chain of command and has the authority to execute even a senior officer.
The enemy in front. Definitely. I think the Commissars work because they're a reminder that the Emperor is watching. Also, most Commissars in 40K inspire their men through acts of great valor to stir everyone up into an asskicking frenzy. Not by shooting their own guys. I mean, they shoot their guys when needed, but normally they lead from the front.
It seems like orks take prisoners when the grots are running low. They want teeth, forced labor and snacks. If the orks are taking prisoners, they're losing. There is a background story to Commissar Yarrick where he gets captured by orks as child and makes and escape with a psyker boy. Yarrick is the only survivor and is recommended to the Commissariat for his actions.
My list of imprisonment is top to bottom. World Eaters (it would be over quick) Tau Eldar Alpha Legion Orcs Iron warriors Black legion Word bearers Nightlords Deathgaurd Emperors Children Tyranids (no brain bugs please. If they count) Dark Eldar.

Maybe the Lt was right for the wrong reasons. Maybe it is worth it to find out why the Orcs captured them instead of just killing them. The lose bricks will be also lose one or two days later.
I don't find it weird at all. Orks regularly take prisoners for food or labor (and then food). The only spanner in that belt is that the kind of prisoners Orks usually take are non-coms. I would never allow a filthy Xeno to take my prisoner as my faith in the God-Emperor is clad in adamantium. But I'd say Eldar (NOT DARK NOT DARK NOT DARK) or T'au.
Commissars are not to be f'd with. Theres a reason these officers are renowned through out the Imperium for their tenacity and utter defiance in the face of certain death. These guys eat fear for breakfast ☠️
The Necrons & Tyranids don't take prisoners unless you count a certain eclectic Necron lords collection. Orks, Aldari, Dark Eldar and Tau all take prisoners and obviously Chaos as they use them to fuel the rituals. Tau and Aldari would be the best to be a prisoner of. Ork, Dark Eldar and Chaos not so much.
Becoming a prisoner via surrender is disgraceful and immersion breaking given their commissar. Becoming prisoners after nerve agents or explosions (moar dakka) concussed a large area - at least somewhat plausible.
Tau would probably be best case scenario, just about everyone else would suck. Necron, wouldn't take prisoners unless you have plot armor, Nids no, Dark eldar rape puppets, Eldar wouldn't bother with prisoners, Chaos would suck but specifics vary with their god, any of the Imperial factions would just convert or kill you. Every time the orks take prisoners, they make terrible jailors so you have a half decent chance to escape.
Orks taking prisoners isn't all that surprising. Between using prisoners as food, slave labor, or if their War Boss has a flair for the dramatic gladiators in fight pits. Free Booters would also probably try to ransom high ranking Imperial Officers and the like. As for the xeno races that's the most likely to try and take you captive instead of just killing you... I'm torn between the Dark Eldar and the Tau. Of course the Craftworld Eldar and even the Necrons have also been known to take Imperial prisoners when the plot deman- I mean the situation calls for it. I also don't believe for a second that guardsman are told to fight to the death in every engagement. Falling back to fortified positions and even general retreats still happen (there is no glory in pointless defeat after all). Not to mention all the times they'll find themselves wrapped up in some local conflict between two loyal Imperial factions (even Space Marine chapters get caught up in those) and I'm pretty sure prisoners would be taken by both sides until the conflict is resolved. It's a lot more nuanced than people think I'd wager.
Let our own history be your guide in this as it has been proven time and time again that in war capitulating to ones captors rarely ever benefits those who capitulate. The LT is misguided at best and a coward at worst. Just my two cents...
Commander: I am in charge here!
Commissar: Do you feel in charge?

I honestly just don't see it being their style though if I were to answer my own question.
Maybe political prisoners to be used as bargaining chips.
Double greater good on a monday!!!! Could this week get any worse?
witch xeno you want to be prisoner?
it is like ask witch cancer you like
same anser nn (and NOT the dark eldar)
Oy man. I think you mean which and not witch. Which is to choose among a selection, and witch is a spell caster with a broom and whatnot. 😉
And probably I'd choose the Tau, they seem pretty nice to their prisoners. And cancer wise... I think large cell melanoma non-budding.
Sry for the bad eng XD and for the tau im not so sure
A big risk of too get neutered
And slaanesh do it for fun
Rho, me owd mucker. You need to read some of the commisar Cain novels or Anarch from the ghosts series. In the former the orcs invasion of Perlia do take slaves and that is not an isolated example and in the latter a guardsman who could give Marbo a run for his money takes on a cultists muster point. Being taken captive is remarkably easy considering in the 40k universe as unaugmented humans are quite squishy and not overly robust so being injured and knocked unconscious is easily accomplished.
Commissars aren't junior to Lieutenants, they're not even part of the guard's command structure?
that is what I thought
Depends on the regiment but they are just there for morale
It depends on the regiment and the writer. Mostly they are outside of the direct command structure and act as morale officers but also a sort of "quality control officer" that can take over if the command is killed or is judged by higher ups or by the Commissar themselves to be negligent or a coward.
This is correct. Though they march with the units they are attached to, no officer of any rank can technically order a commissar to do anything. This is important because a Commissar's right to order summary execution extends to officers as well as the rank and file, as this story alludes.
@@gabrielbloom8704 Zampolit
LOL ! The poor orcs hoped, their food wouldent spoil, if they leaf it alive and then they get a spoiled officer. Thanks to Gork and Mork, they got the inspiration, to catch a commisar, to keep the food fresh. :D
A weapons sling? Most believable thing I've seen in WH40K.
@@BlackHole392
Probably Inside the bioships stomach is where they keep the prisoners where they slowly being digested.
Lictors kind of count for the few seconds it takes to eat your brains as their form of interrogation.
"Greater Good lessons" lol
Easy scenario where Orks could get prisoners. Urban engagement, Guard fight for days, but last Ork push topples lots of buildings. Some Guardsman survive but fall unconscious and the Orks take them for more fighting later.
Prisoners of WAAAAGGHH! Lmao!!! :)
Commissar Hard Nut: guess we know what guardmen think of her
Being taken prisoner by anybody, any faction in the grimdark future seems... less than desirable.
Let's go down the list:
*Tyranid:* Turned into Hybrid, fate worse than death.
*Chaos:* See "Dark Eldar"
*Astartes/Guard:* An interesting case, since ordinary soldiers may have zero idea their governor is rebelling.
*Angels Vermillion* take humans to drink there blood, its why Dante made them outcasts !
It's actually fairly common for orks to take prisoners as work slaves. (or squig feed)
That happens in books a lot (usually civies though)
Ork runtherds actually have a habit of taking prisoners and training them as slaves, to the extent the runtherd will even go out of their way to learn the language of their captive.
"Only in death does duty end"

*proud dreadnought noises*
Thing is war is hectic some of those soldiers probably got knocked out and lost consciousness during the battle and got imprisoned that way others might have reasoned that if they can escape still alive they'd be Abel to live to kill more xenos others probably wanted to survive
Only in death does duty end and I think that the most unlikely to take prisoners would be the guard or any servant of the emperor.
Who would I be prisoner of? As a regular guy? Eldar. Definately them.
Fear me!!
But follow!!!
Woot! 17 minutes........ TTFN, Good Sir.
This is not a true Militarum week unless you go over the legend of Sly Marbo!!
Does lazguns have recoil?
who are you more afraid of guardsman? the enemy in front or the commisar behind?
We MUST have Sly Marbo and true lore about him!
At least they give you a lazer gun so
My list of imprisonment is top to bottom.
World Eaters (it would be over quick)
Tau
Eldar
Alpha Legion
Orcs
Iron warriors
Black legion
Word bearers
Nightlords
Deathgaurd
Emperors Children
Tyranids (no brain bugs please. If they count)
Dark Eldar.
Is this Astra Milatarum week or Commisarr week? XD. Have your read the book 15 Hours? That is a Guard novel that deserves a place here tomorrow or Friday.
Only in death does duty end.
Dark elder is who I wouldnt want to be taken prisoner by
Could anyone on here please recommend a good novel in relation to the guard? I'm a massive 4Ok lore, fan but sadly never read a book from the view point of the average Lasgun blasting grunt!
Anything to do with "Gaunt's ghosts". Also most of the books about Ciaphas Cain.
@@johnkesot223 yes this, this, and this and you can get an omnibus for either commisar for 20 dollars which is 3 novels and usually a short story or two. Gaunt for realistic imperial guard, cain for a more humorous take
Only in death does duty end. Commisar Hark Tanith first and only :)
Life is service to The Emperor. And service to The Emperor is life.
I’m guessing this scenario involved some weird boyz and a war boss who was playing at being especially cunnin
Cunnin and Brutal and of course...... Brutal and Cunnin !
wasnt commissar Yarrick almost an ork POW and tried to save a bunch by himself and ended up stabbing a guardsmen
i think Yarrick was taken as a prisoner of war by Gazgull
I think...........that the lieutenant is not going to see the end of the story
I remember in the brutal kunnin book the Ork character mentions that Orks capture slaves.
And in the book Band Blade.
Stryxis would be the best captors.
For most imperials it would be a huge improvement of life quality.
Untill they are traded away...
In WW2 it was the duty of a british soldier to attempt escape and to disrupt and distract as many soldiers from the front line as possible
Becoming a prisoner via surrender is disgraceful and immersion breaking given their commissar. Becoming prisoners after nerve agents or explosions (moar dakka) concussed a large area - at least somewhat plausible.
Wait what, Orks understand the concept of taking prisoners?
Orks keep humans as cattle slaves
Statistically speaking, theres a human who is raised by orcs...that would he a good book
Well they kind of already have other orkoids they keep as slaves, so it's a semi-natural development.
Yes, it is pretty rare but only because normally orks completely ignore non-combatants as utterly boring to them, loot stuff, then leave.
Tau would be preferable.
That LT is about to get beaten to death by his own unit at the authorization of the commissariat.
Most likely to take prisoners? Deldar. That's what they do after all. Most comfortable? Overlord Zandrek.
Only in death duty ends
