For anyone who was scared that their high e string would break (mine was making noises it probably shouldn't) I use the CGCFCE tuning with the capo at the 3rd fret and it works absolutely fine. Great video!
Nick’s actually playing a different bass pattern on the low strings: “D A D A A A”. Or (string numbers): “6 5 6 5 5 5”. It doesn’t switch back and forth the whole time - listen closely when he isn’t singing to hear it. Still pretty tricky to play! Great vid btw!
wow thats it it! its really heavy to play the bass and the other strings together, its a syncope picking, i practice it since three hours and it works but it takes much more hours to play it fluently, by the way it works also with CGCFCE tuning, and capo at Fret 3, so you must not turn the b string so high:-) dear Alon i hope you make more of tutorials like that..greetings from Germany
Yeah, it’s tricky to play both the bass and melody at the same time :) I was struggling with this one for a while as well. I’m glad the video was useful! I’ll put up more Nick Drake guitar tutorials in the future.
I've spent at least 5 hours throughout the past days trying to master this song and I'm finally close to nailing it. Thanks a lot for this great tutorial
I heard someone refer to Nick Drake as the Jimi Hendrix of the acoustic guitar. I rather like that as both their styles were incredibly nuanced, singular, and light years beyond in their frame of consciousness, talent, and sheer artistry ❤
OMG!!!!! This is amazing! You make it look a LOT easier than I know I will find it to be! But thank you, thank you, thank you! I now have something new to work on to get me through the pandemic!!! Awesome!!
Glad to help! I found it really tough at first, but it just clicked at some point. It's all about getting that thumb to bounce around independently of the other fingers.
Not sure the bass is entirely correct but near enough, and I like the tutorial style a lot as it's a very similar process to the one I go through when learning something new . I've been having a go at this for years but it's such a simple tune that i've never really sat down and perfected it - partly because the tuning takes too bloody long :)
Thank you! I can definitely do a Things Behind the Sun tutorial, but it may be a while before I get around to it. I'm recovering from a wrist injury and I can't play guitar for a while.
@@AlonMusic that's a bummer. I echo what the others are saying; you've structured this in an easily digestible format. I'm going to try and take it reaaaaaalllly slow!
Just great, man. I am struggling with this song for months and can't get that alternate bass along with the first 3 strings arpeggio, it's too much for me. I think I'll die before getting it... could you post a slow motion video of your right hand alone? :)
Javier G. Valdivia keep at it, and I’m sure you’ll get it. I was struggling with this one as well and one day it just clicked. Here is a slow version of the right hand pattern: ua-cam.com/video/3p2eGGPapp4/v-deo.html
The thumb is playing eighth-note triplets while the other fingers are playing eighth notes. It's a 3 - 2 polyrhythm, where three bass notes fit in the same space as two melody notes.
I though the string- thumb pattern Was C G C G G G. ( If consider this is open strings) It sounds ok with C G C G C G though. But i thought chris healey's tab was right. I have to check that!
Does anyone here know of a good capo for me to buy? I got one for my acoustic guitar but it's too...short? It can't reach and press down on the first string (the thinnest one)
Evig Sorg I personally like the Kaiser capo. You need to make sure you have the right size for your guitar. If you are using a classical (nylon string) guitar, they tend to have much thicker necks, and a capo for a steel string or electric guitar will be too small to hold all 6 strings.
@@italozanoti7180 It's because of the polyrhythm between the bass notes and the arpeggio notes. You hear both rhythms at once and your mind doesn't know which one to to focus on.
Don't despair! If you're new to fingerpicking, I would start with a simpler song that has the alternating bassline, just to get your thumb used to bouncing between two strings. Eventually your thumb just goes on autopilot and it's a lot easier to focus on what the other fingers are doing.
@@Wicked_Panda I can't think of any songs off the top of my head, but there's a series of lessons here that seem like a good place to start: ua-cam.com/video/tHtvwiqy3zs/v-deo.html
you can get away with playing it like this and it still sounds good, but the bass bits are definitely wrong (or a bit simplified) here. He makes way more uses of the open D string. No offense intended and your playing is still great...it's a bloody hard track to learn, especially to then sing to if playing completely faithfully to the record.
Michael Heskett I found it helpful to separate the parts when I was learning the song. The thumb and fingers are playing different rhythms so it was easier for me to learn the individual parts first and then put them together.
For anyone who was scared that their high e string would break (mine was making noises it probably shouldn't) I use the CGCFCE tuning with the capo at the 3rd fret and it works absolutely fine. Great video!

Evig Sorg Kaiser is a company that makes all kinds of different capos. You should make sure the one you buy is specifically for a classical guitar
