This is not one of the best Carpenter's songs. @@donnajean3202 This is a great Carpenter's song. "A Song For You" was written by Leon Russell not the Carpenter's. Karen does a great version of it. The Carpenter's recorded it in the early 70's way before Karen got married so its definitely not about her husband
@FortWorthFabian - You have reacted to most of the Carpenters best songs but here are a few that you have not reacted to yet. There is " A Song for You" , "Hurting Each Other" , "A Kind of Hush", " Solitaire" and if you want to see Karen having fun on stage then check out " Jambalaya on the Bayou " live at Budokan. Karen also covers a couple of Beatle songs " Ticket to Ride " and "Please Mr. Postman". Although "Please Mr. Postman" was done by other people before the Beatles did it. One of her last songs before she died was "Touch Me When We're Dancing". There is also another version of "Superstar" where Karen is wearing a long yellow dress although I think most people like the version you already reacted to in the red dress better but you could see which version you like better. I think that would cover the entire Carpenters catalogue of really big hits including the ones you reacted to already but I may have missed a few.
That is such an important quality about Karen Carpenter that people don't normally mention - she was a very classy lady. You don't see that in female performers too much anymore. I do see it reflected in the deference that everyone shows her. I never see lacivious comments about her. I see the odd guy admit they had a crush on her, but there's never anything about her looks or anything like that. She was a lady and to this day, everyone still defers to her as such.
John Bettis, Karen's friend and Richard's song writing partner, said that this was her most biographical song. He also said that when she passed, his songs lost their voice. This performance exemplifies why Karen had to come out from behind her beloved drum kit! Our lovely Drummergirl
It's interesting: the final single recorded that might be considered "Carpenters" came from Richard's 1987 solo album "Time". That song, "Something In Your Eyes", with lead vocal by the great Dusty Springfield, was composed by Richard...but the lyrics are not by John Bettis. I have always wondered why that was. I did know about Bettis' remark regarding the loss of Karen...maybe that's why that song had a different lyricist...
Karen was a wonderful singer and she is sorely missed. Life just didn't seem to give her the breaks she needed. But she left behind a legacy. Thank you for your reaction.
What she couldn’t bring closure to in her life she left for us to navigate through in our lives to figure out how to have happiness. She was truly an instrument to save other lives that she couldn’t do for herself. I really miss her presence but she left us so much to think about.
Karen was one the female GOATs and The Carpenters were absolutely phenomenal in their ability to capture emotions and convey a message that cuts right to your heart and soul. Wish they were still making music today but so glad that the music they made is still around for us to listen to and enjoy - and for other generations to discover too.
I’m so happy when I see or hear younger people hear The Carpenters and love them! I’ve loved them since they started singing, and was devastated when she died. I miss their singing, and her beautiful voice so much 😢
FortWorthFabian, thank you for your intelligence and passion. Yes, Karen Carpenter was extraordinary in every way. The Carpenters' musical genius ensures that their exceptional body of work will live on forever, touching and enriching our lives.
When Karen first saw the song title, and began to read the lyrics, she immediately said, "We need to do this song!". It became her favorite to perform.
Karen had a voice that would hit you right in the heart. She was and still is my favorite female singer. Karen could make you actually feel the emotion of the song.
This song was Karen's favourite of all the songs Carpenters recorded. And this is apparently a true live version. Certainly it is phrased a bit differently than the studio version. (I'm a huge Carpenters fan, have been since the seventies, and the differences are obvious from the start, since I've heard the studio version so many times...)
It’s not weird what you feel, it’s what she does to everyone. You believe what she sings because she’s telling her story to you, to me, to each person in the audience. So many singers especially today sing for themselves and to impress. They can’t sing without always having to hit that high note and you can’t understand have of the words they’re singing. Her diction was so perfect, you could understand every word and you felt it.
Karen has an arresting voice. It's uncanny because whenever one of her songs comes on, whether it's the radio or playing in a shop in the background, I have to stop and listen to the end. Karen was something else. No one comes close to the quality of her voice. She is sorely missed.
Hey dude, for Karen to sing this song took so much courage. She was singing about her own life and if anyone has lived, these lyrics resonate. Gorgeous, haunting voice.
Knowing her tragic young death makes this even more sad. And i really don’t think she found the love she was looking for 😒 as always her voice is just stellar 👏👏 good point about the way she draws you in with her performance 👏👏
No, KC certainly didn't find perfection in a relationship. She was married in 1980 but the marriage went sour almost immediately, and divorce proceedings were underway when Karen died less than three years later...
Hard to get through this without tearing up. She had the most haunting beautiful voice. It’s so nice to see this appreciation to this great lady n amazing duo called The Carpenters. I still have all the Lps. Love this 💕
62 this year. Karen was my first real, sold, I would do anything for crush. The day she passed I cried like nothing else in my life to that point. It's so great to see all the people today discovering her and her amazing talent. You hit the nail on the head with "she makes you listen" statement. A voice that does not reach out a grab you, but gently takes your soul and leads to exactly where she wants you to be. And all well before the days of auto tune. The good quality live videos that are out there sound as good as if not better than the studio versions. You need to put their version of Mery Christmas Darling on your list for the holidays. I send that video to all my family and fri9oends every year.
Her voice was velvet. A unique talent we'll never see the likes of, again. I know I came to this one late, and you may have already reacted to it, but there's another song she does that's even more sad than this one. It's called 'I'll Say Goodbye to Love.' Heart-wrenching! I appreciate your reviews. It's obvious that you love good music; it shows through your reactions.
The saddest thing about these songs are they reflect how she truly felt on the inside, yet she somehow had to sing them with almost delight and a smile on her face ..that's the tragedy.
It is awesome to see a hip hop fan recognize the sheer angelic brilliance of her voice. But you hit truth in everything you said. God bless, Chuck in NC
I can tell that you care about life and the finer things. Material things are only good if they do good. They say, “If it does not make the man, it is not worth the making.” So if you have anything that does not do anything for you, or help you to be better and grow….give it to someone who could really use it!!
Hi 🙋🏾♀️ I grew up listening to her music from my parents and being a lil girl i had instant love bcuz that voice is so angelic. Then that sad day in feb 83 I was so tore up as if I knew her personally. And it hurt me more to find out more about her wanting and needing true love bcuz everyone was in control of her she was smothered and let down and never got true love. Anyway I’ll keep listening bcuz I can’t help but listen . This song reminds me of me literally. Rest in Heaven Angel 👼🏽 ❣️💔🙏🏽thank you for having some knowledge while sharing her music 🙏🏽
How ironic that her voice hugs you and makes you feel all right when she feels she was fool enough that she's all right. Her's is the most soothing and caressing voice i have ever heard❤
Richard recalled that it was the Karen Carpenters' favorite song. I Need to Be in Love" is a song written by Richard Carpenter, Albert Hammond and John Bettis. (A curiosity: John Bettis is an excellent lyricist and is one of the composers of the music Human Nature by Michal Jackson.) It was released as a single on May 21, 1976. It was featured on the album A Kind of Hush, released on June 11 of the same year.
I believe this Carpenter/Bettis composition was her favorite and since Richard and John knew her so well, they were able to express her feelings perfectly through this song. It tears you apart to hear her beautiful voice expressing her loneliness and that hopeless look she gave at the end of the video was heart breaking! So glad this song touched your heart!
She sang with so much emotion and pain!! Read her biography and watch her movie. This is when she was really not well. Just breaks my heart. She's one of my all time favorite singers.
She makes me so happy AND so sad every time I see and hear her sing. She was so beautiful and was such a loving soul gone WAY too soon. I wish she could have stayed with us longer. ❤
Karen had said one sent an interview that this was her favorite song to sing to because she was asked and they she replied that I need to be in love is my favorite I've only discovered her music a couple of years ago but it's very addicting once you start listening to their music there's no going back it's kind of like you found beautiful perfection music and you just can't go back listening to a lot of the other stuff that you thought was good over the years because this puts it at a way higher standard thank you for listening thank you for your reaction bye
Karen had what I call "sitting in your lap... singing only for you" talent.. She didn't force it when she sang straight from the heart and you can hear it in every note she sang... A one in a billion voice!
