"Say You'll Be There" is a song by English girl group the Spice Girls from their debut studio album, Spice (1996). It was co-written by the Spice Girls with Eliot Kennedy after the group left their former management in 1995. Jonathan Buck later received a songwriting credit as well. Production duo Absolute incorporated a mix of dance-pop and R&B influences into the song, which includes a harmonica solo, played by Judd Lander. The song's lyrics describe the things the group went through together and how they were always there for each other. It received mixed reviews from music critics, many of whom praised it for its catchiness, while others were critical of its production.
Originally considered by the record label to be the group's debut single, it was released as the album's second single on 14 October 1996. It became their second number-one in the United Kingdom, and was certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). It was a commercial success across Europe, reaching the top ten in most of the charts that it entered. As a result of its popularity, the song was released in 1997 in Australia, receiving a gold certification by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). In the United States, it debuted at number five on the Billboard Hot 100, setting at the time a record for the highest entry by a British act on the chart.
The music video was inspired by the films Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965) and Pulp Fiction (1994), and features the group as a band of female techno-warriors, who use martial arts and high-tech ninja-influenced weapons to capture a hapless male. It includes symbols of male disempowerment, and serves as an example of solidarity and the group's bonding. It received positive reactions and was nominated for numerous awards including the 1996 Smash Hits Poll Winners Party, the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, and the 1997 Brit Awards.
I was 13 when Spice mania took hold in the UK. For about 3 years, no other artist or group were as successful or popular. They had 9 no.1 singles in the UK (6 consecutively), and with 100million records sold worldwide, are THE biggest selling girl group of all time. Not necessarily the greatest singers or dancers but they were dynamic, charismatic, had a fun aesthetic which let them all be individuals as well as having great pop songs❤
so cool
This song was huge when i was so young. This song was the highest debut by a british artist in the 90's, debuting at n.5 in Billboard Hot 100 and finished to reaching the top 3 because of the huge impact of the song in video and in radios. This song was everywhere in radios and MTV. She was the highest debut at this chart by a british since ''George Michael'' did that a year before with ''Jesus to a Child'', debuting (and peaking) at n.7. This song aged well 25 years after the released.
I love their backstory how they were locked up in a house by the guy who created lots of other groups (can’t recall his name) training to be a group. Then just before when they were to sign the contract they thought f*ck that, we got the talent to do this ourselves - and that’s exactly what they did. Girl Power 😁
what!!1 lol very interesting!
Love on first hearing when i got my hands on this album.
Every song is straight fire, takes me back to my bittersweet childhood 💜💜
🔥
thats how you make a great pop video. actually all their videos are amazing. They really were the perfect pop package they had it all.
Scary Spice🔥🔥🔥🔥
I always liked this song better than "Wannabe "
At their prime, they looked great here, especially Ginger and Scary. Cute Song.I like that every member sings solo here, even Posh :D
They all got lines and can sing lead, even though none is outstanding vocalist, they can all sing and like you said all have their distinct style and personality which shows in the video.
Mel C is a great vocalist - that’s why she got all the high solo parts. Emma and Mel B could also do their thing really well - the other two struggled a bit but as you said, they could manage in the right setting.
Mel C was the best singer by far. She wasn't the dominant personality and more about the team. Ginger was the lead but not because of her singing.
@@Kruppt808 I disagree. Baby spice best singer-by far.
We can agree on who were weakest vocalist: Ginger and Posh
@@Azure_tv Maybe but Ginger managed to have plenty of solohits in Europe on her own and she was their main songwriter responsible for writing some of their best songs including Viva Forever, Too Much, Stop and 2 Become 1. Without her they lost their Spice on the final album.
She sounded good on her solotrack Look At Me.
The Spice Girls are an interesting story. They all answered an ad for auditions for a girl group. The girls that made the group were put into a house living together. They spent months working on their act with the producers that put the ad in the paper. Growing disillusioned with the progress being made, the girls left the arrangement - covertly taking their 2 master demos with them. The 5 girls then began building a team of their own. They eventually hired Annie Lennox's manager, Simon Fuller... who immediately began introducing the girls to record labels. They eventually signed with Virgin and became the biggest selling girl group of all time.
Spice Girls - Biggest selling girl group of all time
En Vogue - Most talented girl group of all time
Bananarama - Listed in the Guinness World Records for the most chart entries by an all-female group
Mel B did a song with Missy Elliott in the late 90s....”I want you back”.
You should check it out!
Gotta love the Spice Girls randomly sometimes. Their film came out in 1997 (turned 17) and remembered the movie advertisement well. Fun seeing Mel B before she was a Judge on America's Got Talent. Bop!
Yay I got tens across the board again! Lol seriously though this song has such a groove to it. One of their best!
Yall gotta admit it The Spice will have you bopping your head. Their music is so fun. The didn't have to look like fake twins or quads.
When Spice Girls first burst onto the scene, I instantly became a fan like a lot of my peers did (I was a kid, around 9 at the time). I was begging my mom for the dolls, the merch, the movie, similar clothes, similar hairstyles, you name it. TBH so much of their music still stands up today. Just good, fun, fiesty pop music. For all the girls, everywhere. Please react to their song "Too Much."
So cool to hear
I love that they tricked you on that final chorus. Legendary Mel. B there. This was their 2nd single and in my opinion much better then the debut Wannabe.
😂they did! and i agree, but i think Wannabe was the perfect intro because it is so fun and distincitive I still haven't heard a song like that and idk what they're talking about
I am a Spicehead and i deff agree on "Wannabe" being good but not that great as "Say you will be there" 💜
Hey Empress i remember this spice girls song say you be there cool song I loved your reaction and I been listening too spice girls Viva for ever you might like it 😊
Noted
Of course Empress would be Queen Spice, leading the band with the best vocals !
Aye! I'm here for it!!!

The spice girls was like beatlemania for the 90s
Spice Girls are legends
Love this Song 😍 Spice Girls Forever ❤️
Another great reaction! Please give a listen to 80’s girl group The Mary Jane Girls and their song “In My House” They were protégés of Rick James .

lolz she said atheistic not knowing these girls actually are real life martial arts experts 😂😂
Yassss, Ginger Spice is the shit
You sound exactly like Robyn in your intro
Wow...that took me back..lol...thank you!!
They were the kind of group where you and your friends (if you were a girl or a gay guy lol) would each pick out which one you were!
I was always Posh...even though she was widely accused of being the weakest link vocally. Oh well she eventually married David Beckham and became a very successful fashion designer (a REAL one, not a "celebrity" designer with a line at Kohls lol)
Have you seen Posh and Becks interviewed by Ali G? It's hilarious.
You could been Emptess Spice Girl!
Hi,.love your reactions..with all due respect, I think you are gorgeous 😍
😊 thank you
please react to little mix bounce back video, and power video :) their another UK girlband from recently. loved your reaction you was vibing :) peace from London
As a guy...I loved seeing them on my TV when this came out, they're always very alluring, but I gotta admit, it's also the dumbest music video I've probably ever seen...I'm just now realizing this. hahaha
1996 😊🥰😘
...WELL, my comment got removed, because either I referenced the flick this Video was based on, or mentioned sumpthin', that triggered it, but I'll just say, 'cute tune' ....ha-HAA!!
😲 Must've been one heck of a comment. Memo to self: check yo'self before you wreck yo'self when it comes to Spice Girls. 🤣
@@craigcraigster4999":...must've been one heck of a comment..." ...hell, it was one heck of a LONG comment!! ...now, I can't remember ONE WORD of it! ...ah, well, consider me 'wrecked', ha-HAAA!!
