Sticht, can I hug you, man? You're like the guitar teacher I never had. I learned to improvise on guitar at 45yo (47 now) and Stitch was the single most important influence. The never lost system is basically what got out of the shapes 01 and 02 of the pentatonic. So grateful, bro. 🙏
Wow. This lesson breaks down exactly what I have been trying to figure out for the last year. The whole not playing notes higher than the melody is something I needed to hear for so long. My ears knew it I wasn't always doing it right but my head couldn't figure out its the inconsistency of my picking hand. Awesome tutorial you sir are a gifted teacher, thankyou so much.
Thank you for your patience, guidance, and clear instructions. Unlike other channels, you're focused on showing how to do it rather than impressing us with your playing ability. Kudos!
This is a breakthrough! I've lamented that so many lessons are rhythm (G-C-D over and over, call it a song) or lead (fun little snippets, but no complete song) when what I want to be able to play is the melody (full song, recognizable as such). So... ear training, find the notes... end up with a childish string of sounds; a bit of fun, but not very satisfying. Try the chords that relate to those notes; you get a hot mess... until now! Find the chords; play them short, without the high end above the melody line... Maybe half the viewers already knew that; but for me... gold! Thank you, Stich! I'm eager to try this...
Thank you! I really like how you talk about the notes and how they relate to the chords as well as the chord shapes. This is the first time I could really follow a lesson on this song.
You are one of the only youtube lesson guitarist I keep coming back to over and over again, love how you breakdown what seems to be complicated, thanks.
Stich, i used to be to sing , had a great range, but then medical problems occurred, which ruined my vocal cords. This method will greatly help me to keep playing my beautiful guitar, make her sing instead of me. I recored this song six years ago, & just had a blast doing the vocals. so love you for this lesson.
You really are a superb teacher Stich, I’ve got a bit disheartened with my playing recently and hopefully this will help me regain my enthusiasm. Cheers Stich.
Love this guy and very informative I've been working on it 2 days now and I pretty much got it down to the t. LOL I enjoy playing along with you sir keep up the good work
Such a cool song. I never even heard it until about 3 years ago. It's like that whole album eluded me all these years, other than the couple songs you can hear on the radio
You are a bit over my head as a neophyte, but I find your melodic strumming and calm voice somehow soothing as I listen to the video. I hope to return someday when my skills have improved and most of what you say in this video doesn't confuse me anymore.
Great lesson, I can't wait to start to learn it. I always struggled to play chords and melody at the same time. Thank you for the lesson! Wish me luck!
Ian, I am seventy two years old and have been playing guitar for over fifty years mostly as a single doing guitar harmonica and vocals. I started playing guitar only as a way to accompany myself as a singer. Naturally I started out playing, "cowboy chords" and strumming. That works ok for a song like Proud Mary or something like that but when you get into playing songs like, "Still Crazy After All These Years" by Paul Simon or especially songs by Piano players like Leon Russells "Song For You" it just doesn't work. So over the years I gravitated to arpeggiating chords and playing what I now hear called slash chords as a method of adding a bass line to my playing. Basically just emphasizing the bass notes of whatever chord I might be playing. Then, over time, I began to find that adding just a few lead notes and, "Grace Chords" which I now hear called slash chords really helped to emphasize a vocal line and track the melody. You are teaching a much more sophisticated method of this and although I'm still performing regularly one or two nights a week, I am still always trying to learn how to play guitar. I have been doing a lot of what you are teaching in this lesson and since you are not, as I understand it, primarily a vocalist, you probably have no idea just how important what you are touching upon in this lesson is to someone who performs a single doing vocals and guitar. So for all of those struggling performers out there trying to do a single act with guitar and vocals, Thanks for this. Oh, and incidentally, although this lesson is a bit over the heads of most beginners, a good way for them to begin with this is to simply try and start emphasizing the bass lines in your chords. Again, thanks Ian.
My new motto: "If you can't whistle, then just fade out." I've been roughly playing guitar like this for years. When I say roughly, I mean it.i could hear the melody line but it was hit or miss. Thanks for the video, it made things click in place.
Looking forward to the twenty minutes of practicing with you on Patreon. This is new for you. Teaching full songs. I love it. I like endlessly soing too, of course, but this is really fun.
Stich! Thank you! Can you make more lessons like that? Nobody seems to be teaching stuff like this! It would be great if someone could teach how to make arrangements on guitar, too. I’d buy a course like that in an instant.
I think you should do a lot of the elements. Keep the right hand moving. Don’t play any strings above the melody. Anything that’s going to conflict. Occasionally just play the melody line if it’s hard to play chords along with the melody. Etc. Plus he’s got a Patreon, you can sent him a little cash. He does a lot of work he’s great
This is exactly what I have been trying to figure out lately. Thank you! Would you be willing to do another one of these but with a song I am more familiar with? Maybe Here comes the sun, or something like that.
I thought is was the green day when september ends song.. That's a great song.. The beatles were awesome but I don't really know this song. Thanks for the upload. You got a yellow sub in me amigo
Good video and instruction. I have been using a very similar method for some time but using (G and D) open tuning, which makes it easier and you can use B and top D for higher vocal parts. I have just subscribed and look forward to watching your other videos. Stay safe. Regards
Hey there. So I have been following a lot of teachers on UA-cam for the last few years but never stumbled upon uou until tonight. I really like your style. You seem more geared toward intermediate I’m more late beginner and sometimes just flat beginner with many skills. So you do any lessons on barre chord tips etc. I can play most open chords pretty well but going from open to barre etc I can’t transition smooth. Like C to F I just always have a pause. I like country and Bm always comes up and I can’t get to it. I just can’t seem to memorize the barre shapes like i did the open chords. Yet I bought myself a pretty awesome Taylor and a fishman amp. I need to get this going. Help! Anyhow thanks for your page! I subscribed. -Ryan
Nice job. Would like to see other chord melodies done. I have found not all songs lend themselves to this. Would like to see a lesson on a more difficult song.
Was trying to comment on your poll about Beatles songs and chord Melodie’s but lost it.. figured I would post here.. I’m only sleeping, rocky raccoon, I feel fine, sgt peppers, she said she said, when I’m 64… there’s too many lol
Stich keeps doing this. Over and over. More quality content per minute than any other channel. Clear, concise, useful. Best teacher online.
How cool is it when you have a music teacher, and you can tell he is excited about teaching a lesson! Pretty cool!😊🎸
Ian is a legend.
Yep. I love this guy.
Yeah, totally. If all teachers were passionate like Ian.

Honestly, one of the best and most approachable guitar lessons I've seen. And, yeah, a good song.
This is a breakthrough! Man Beatles were so underrated with their chord progressions.
More Beatles if possible and of course you'd like to. Been on a big Beatles trip since that doc came out. Great lesson!
Thank you! I really like how you talk about the notes and how they relate to the chords as well as the chord shapes. This is the first time I could really follow a lesson on this song.
Appreciate your teaching ability. Having skill and knowledge is no guarantee of teaching ability. Your patience and clear communication is great
That Taylor is a heavenly joy to hear. Terrific videos, and a hundred thanks.
Superb lesson stitch. Very clear instructions.
You are one of the only youtube lesson guitarist I keep coming back to over and over again, love how you breakdown what seems to be complicated, thanks.

You sound like the nicest guitar teacher I've watched,,
You really are a superb teacher Stich,
I’ve got a bit disheartened with my playing recently and hopefully this will help me regain my enthusiasm. Cheers Stich.
I am in the same boat. I need to improve in so many areas and learn. I just stick too much with what’s easy and I know.
Have you done his 3 free masterclasses on youtube? Gamechanger. Particularly the caged arpeggio one.
Wow. This video is amazing. This is exactly how I want to play songs in the guitar. Thank you for the great lesson!
My fave ! 2 Beatle songs in one, done in unison for the last verse/chorus in the outro.
Your technique is wonderful. Thanks very much from this geezer
Love this guy and very informative I've been working on it 2 days now and I pretty much got it down to the t. LOL I enjoy playing along with you sir keep up the good work
Good , You have the patience & the talent. Keep it up.
This is the first video I've seen of yours and you just might be the best teacher on UA-cam x
Such a cool song. I never even heard it until about 3 years ago. It's like that whole album eluded me all these years, other than the couple songs you can hear on the radio

I have learned so much by watching your videos.
Great lesson, I can't wait to start to learn it. I always struggled to play chords and melody at the same time. Thank you for the lesson! Wish me luck!

One must always sing when playing guitar. Even with a bad voice 😎
But this is pretty kew.
Norwegian Wood is another great song for a chord melody

Same with "8 Days a Week"
The first song I ever learned 1988

Capo on the first fret to match and play with the recording. Standard tuning.
Just what I needed to get more out of my guitar. I can't sing to save my life. Thank you.
Another brilliant lesson, kind of next level, for me anyways Thankyou
this is great. It has a Burt Reynolds deliverance sound to it
excellent pedagogy
Good video and instruction. I have been using a very similar method for some time but using (G and D) open tuning, which makes it easier and you can use B and top D for higher vocal parts. I have just subscribed and look forward to watching your other videos. Stay safe. Regards
