Actually it's not sure that without trench warfare, they would have changed their uniform. It was also not responsible for the casualties in 1914.

There were so many French uniforms in the Napoleonic Age that it would take an animation of 1 hour to go through them all - Sappers of the Guard, Gendarmes of the Guard, Marines of the Guard, Polish Lancers, Foot Artillery of the Guard, the Mameluks, Chasseurs of the Guard, Dragoons, Hussards, Carabiniers and Cuirassiers (to name a few).

Don't forget the Young Guard and the Middle Guard
There were a lot of uniforms for each nation. The Russians also had many uniforms for different units.

There were differents colors being used by regular line infantry, foreigners regiments and the maison du roy.

In the 90's, the French started to wear CCE camouflage, which was of the same cut at the olive drab tenue F2. and half way the 90's the French started to wear in a desert environment, a desert camouflage uniform, nicknamed Daguet. And a nice touch, that you used this version of Le Boudin. and in my case, Vive la Legion.

The French aircraft had “cocarde” (national marking) on plane that were the red outside and the blue on centre. The video shows British cocardes that are exactly the contrary.
Yes and even if we remove the cocarde we can recognize that it is an English plane because during the two wars they had blue, white and red at the end of the rear wing (yes that would correspond more to France but that is not the case)

My great grand father fought during the battle of France in 1940, he was in the tanks tho so he might have had a different uniform. But I'm so proud of that, he participated to one of the few wins that France got against Germany and fought side by side with De Gaulle, who was in the tanks too before becoming a general.
As a member of the toy army men-collecting community, I find these videos invaluable when it comes to painting and styling them. I think a whole series of these videos should be released. Videos on Austrian uniforms history, Italian uniforms, Swedish, Greek, Turkish, Chinese, Mexican, Spanish, Portuguese, and maybe some Latin American countries' uniforms would be great. I understand that they might not be popular with everyone, since it's just clothes and weapons, but it's my suggestion.

When you have the most military victories, but people remember you for surrendering in the last great conflict
France split and only partly surrendered. The Free French fought on. And, although lesser known, Vichy French also fought on but on the other side. One of last units defending Berlin against the Allies was French, while Free French were part of the Allied advance on Berlin (why do you think one sector of Berlin was controlled by the French during the Cold War?)

@@superspies32 the french have won militarily whether it is indochina or algeria, for algeria it is almost total perfect but international pressure has made algeria win politically, for indochina the war ends rather by lack of French logistics, but results from 14 victories for 4 defeats
@@aayhanfett894 but the aims of French in Indochina is a quick end. And they failed, in the battle of Hanoi 1946, they were stalled up to months. They also archieved many victories but it was meaningless because entire army be struck in attrition guerrilla warfare and they can’t even stepped to Viet Minh headquaters.
And finally, they forget that Napoleon has said the one who hiding to a fortress is the one be beaten to defeat. So they go to enemy territory to make a fortress with only one road and the airlines through one airfield. If Napoleon resurrected at that time, I bet he will thrown entire French high command in Indochina through windows or trenches.

With many references to the french history army as the capitaine d’Anjou with his left Hand in wood at Camerone, or also the Dunkirk battle with this iconic scene in the Nolan movie of the same name when brits retreating and finally the hostage taking of the flight 8689 Air France at Marignane. They fought and defeated the most coalitions in human History, were the powerhouse of Europe longer than the Roman Empire was and are the most influential country in History of warfare.
@amine dead gamer ww2 wasn’t lost but ok. 1940 was a critical defeat, but France managed to stay at the winners table ( especially by saving the British army at bir hakeim against a much larger Italo-german army)

They retired from it without any defeat after the treaty of Evian because even controlling the was majority of the local cities it was the never ending stroy and everybody in the UN and Europe was against them especially because of the heavy hand COIN tactics that they used.

Though I will admit, some aspects were pretty cool like those feathered mountain caps which were worn by the Sardinian infantry 😙

Ah, the Old Guard my favorite out of all the regiments in the Grand Armee. Their requirements were very strict unlike their younger version the Young Guard. You had to be 1.73m for chasseurs and 1.78m for the grenadiers (no height requirement for those award the Legion of Honor), knew how to write and read, 35 years of age, 10 year of service and fought at 3 or more campaigns.
The Old Guard was useless during the retreat of La Grande Armee in Russia and the only soldiers able and disciplined enough to cover the retrat at the Beresina were the Swiss regiments, from 9'000 Swiss forced into Napoleons service only 300 returned home, Maréchal Ney knew that only with Swiss he could cover the retreat of la Grande Armée at the Beresina same as that since Francois 1er all French kings had their loyal Swiss regiments as body guards and also to guard the borders of France and do police work against bandits in the country-sid, the mosquetaires were truly only a wish-ful thinking by Alexandre Diumas, no French kign was crazy enough to trust French soldiers and during the wars against the Huguenots again the Regiments Suisses saved the French kings life.
@@jurgbangerter1023 At the battle of Marignan (1515), François 1er crazily trusted his undisciplined french soldiers and won the battle, starting by force a Swiss tradition that still lives on today, neutrality.
@@jurgbangerter1023 Napoleon didn't trusted the Suisse enough. The Grand Armee only had Swiss Regiments because The Swiss at the time was the Helvetic Republic if I'm right still had very good fighters. Napoleon either forced them or mercenaries volunteered to fight for him in his campaigns. The Old Guard in the other hand was Napoleon's best men since they fought with him when he was still a young officer and Napoleon gained their respect and so did they. And of course as their name most of the men that make up the Old Guard were middle aged veterans they're now slower, and less energetic to say the least and The Middle Guard and Young Guard that make up the rest of the Imperial Guard were already fighting in the front lines to wish to be one day apart of the veterans. So yes the Old Guard may be useless in the retreat because their health was deteriorating as well as the rest of the army. Since they're old men they get tired more and walking for days in the harsh winter of Russia isn't a suitable place for a middle aged veteran carrying full gear with a heavy musket and an especially heavy bearskin not to mention when snow and rain got on their bearskins it would make it much heavier.

To invade Switzerland he had declared no war so his attack was against the Perpetual Peace Treaty of France Napoleon broke, also Napoleon sent two armies against one Swiss in his surprise attack, one French army got beaten but the other wan, he was only interested in the treasuries of the Cantons since France had been bancrupted trough Napoleons wars and he stole all the money and gold he could find, also Swiss Freedom fighters even women fought against Napoleons troops being outnumbererd greatly,after the many napoleonic battles Switzerland had over 40'000 Full orphans. The Swiss who marched in la Grande Armee against Russia were all forced into French service. The French weren't a tough as the Swiss montagnards were, also they weren't used to cold climates and harsh conditions and French soldiers never had much discipline not even the old guard. Lucklily the Russians sacked big parts of France after Napoleon's retreat and defeats some even in Switzerland under Suchorov, so the French finally got to taste some of their own medecine ...that the Russians sacked Reims, the city wee French kings were crowned in the Cathedrale, is strangely enough in no French history book, thats where the Russian Boyars got their taste for Veuve Clicquot's and other Champagne and invented the SABRING -sabrer of Champagne bottles...it was the best marketing for Champagne, this Russian aristocrats later ordererd French Champagne by whole wagon trains after their sack in Reims to relive their victory over a tyrant.
@@Indigo-ke5dq actually Napoleon was at this time already back in Paris and it was Maréchal Ney's decision, Ney was a German speaker from the Lorraine who already had chosen and trusted the Swiss more than the French, La Lorraine had once been liberated at the battle of Nancy by the Swiss and this from another tyrant which was Charles the Bold- or le Téméraire(duke of Burgundy) which in fact was a coward and brutal war-lord, about the same as Hitler and Napoleon, massacring a city full of 20'000 Civilians like Dinant in Belgium and still being called the Bold is strong, his life was ended by a Swiss halbardier who cut his noble head in halves at Nancy.

Wonderful video! Good on the French for having some of the most diverse uniforms the world has seen. Sometimes helpful, sometimes disappointing, they highlight what is part of the French Military's identity.
They have a long and deep history which contrary to the stereotypes, the French had seen alot of great victories!

Actually, during WWII, Free French were equipped with what they had left of french uniforms and equipement, british and later also american gear. Free French units were equiped depending on where they were stationed but also on which allied army they were fighting along. French units incorporated in American units would receive American equipement and so on. In a nutshell, they used what ever they could get their hands on and fine tune it too their needs.
if you look for the Alps' front of 1944-1945, you see how poorly equiped and commanded the french could be.

My favorite one is the late 1800's ones with the cap covers. Love those tropical type uniforms
The Old Guard's hat was later picked up by the British and turned their use to being part of what is now known as "the Queen's Guard"

@@Balrog2005 well the FNL forces were pretty much obliterated by the end of 1960, yes, but De Gaulle realised the hopelessness of the situation when, even as the guerilla forces being depleted, the kill rate still remained high. The attacks on european civilians and troops never ceased, and there was no hope, nor true gain, in holding this territory anymore. It would forever be an agitated country that would simply not be worth the oil it contained..

We could lose ten conflicts in a row, we already have so much glory in our History that we wouldn't feel the slightest ounce of shame as a whole.
The roundels on the French WW1 aircraft at 8:15 are incorrectly British. The French used red on the outside and blue in the centre, like the tricolor cockades on hats during the French Revolution. The British initially put the Union Jack on their planes but stopped this practice by 1915 as they were being mistaken for the black Cross Pattée that the Germans used.

The Old Guard is in fact a group of different regiments. The ones in this videos are Old Guard Grenadiers. In the Old Guard, you can also find Chasseurs, and many other units like cavalry and artillery for example
Fun fact: In the Napoleonic wars, there were 2 variants of uniforms that were issued. The older one were the ones used by the Imperial Guards to the very last. The newer one was more simpler.
And there were also -albeit for a short time- a white uniform in 1807, intended to replace the blue ones because cheaper. They didn't last so they are little known.

I wore a shako for 4-years and have apparently been pronouncing it incorrectly for over 10-years now lol Everyone in the drum corps I was in always pronounced it (SHAY-kō) and I've been rolling with it since then.

Do your next uniform video about the Evolution of Italian Soldier Uniforms
One thing about WWII and the French uniform was they also used a lot of American equipment. In the Osprey series the second booklet on French uniforms shows that they often mixed up whatever gear they could get. In the same book they show a French paratrooper who served in eastern France and his uniform and rifle are all American, only his patches distinguish as French. There is even a Willie and Joe comic that makes a comment about how the French were using mostly American equipment when Willie and Joe are with a girl among French soldiers all kitted out in American gear and their evading an American MP by saying "No parle Englis".
Fun fact: Even with the amount of prestige that the Napoleon's Old Guard receive, the French soldiers also often referred to them as "the Immortals"

Actually, the garrisons of several Maginot forts still used a certain number of horizon-blue uniforms well within the Interwar Period, maybe even during the Phoney War.

I didn't really liked the fact thtat you mention the french waffen SS division as part of French history uniforms , yes the division existed but it only consited of 7000 men... For 400,000 french who fought inside the Free french army after operation dragoon!
