What people dont realise who have never played is that Santoro was a very difficult player to face and frustraring to play against because he spun the ball so much frequently taking all the pace off the ball. Its very hard to play against because its very unlike most players games. Almost like that club player that you shouldnt lose to but do because you dont know how to predict what they will do next. I bet a lot of players dreaded facibg him
If santoro played in the 70s with wooden rackets he'd probably be considered an all-time great. His game isn't as effective with the modern equipment but he had so many great upsets of higher ranked players.
For those who cannot understand how he managed to win against Nole (and other No. 1 or top ten): even if Santoro never managed to be ranked in the top 10, he still won 2x AO in double and made 2x other GS finals in double at the French & Wimbledon. Not too bad for a "limited" player.
Variety of tricky slow short balls midcourt very difficult to hit hard combined with great anticipation and quickness at passing is anathema to today's baseline slugging game. A small quick player should take a page from FS playbook and not try to outslug the sluggers. FS thought his way to multiple GS dubs and consistent second weeks in singles; and great career prize money; no pain and lots of fun. I call that a wonderful career.
Novak literally didn't even try against santoro here. Fabrice asked him at the net if he was okay too, even he was weirded out by novaks lack of effort. This was back to when novak wouldn't even try in matches and retire way too early
He has a cemetery for #1 players. Only a few of them could escape Santoro including Nadal Murray and Kafelnikov. In singles play, Santoro defeated 18 players who were ranked world no. 1 at some time during their careers: Novak Djokovic, Jimmy Connors, Mats Wilander, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg, Jim Courier, Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Thomas Muster, Marcelo Ríos, Gustavo Kuerten, Carlos Moyá, Pat Rafter, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Marat Safin, Lleyton Hewitt, Andy Roddick, and Roger Federer (against whom he has a 2-9 record). Against other former world no. 1 players, Santoro is 0-6 against Yevgeny Kafelnikov, 0-1 against Ivan Lendl, 0-1 against Rafael Nadal, and 0-2 against Andy Murray. Santoro is famous for his winning record against Marat Safin (7-2); Safin himself has said, "Being told I would play Santoro was being told I was to die."
Djokovic had his breakthrough year at that point (beat prime Fed in Canada & reached the us open final). Not to discredit Santoro's impressive victory but Nole had a stomach bug or some kind of minor injury during this match
I don't get your disrespect to Santoro and Djokovic. This was a beautiful match, not antagonistic, just plain awesome tennis. Wasn't about hitting deep, getting a cheap angle for a cheap point, and all the losers of today. Look at Djokovic, he obviously is really into this match. Almost ha
It's hard to believe Djokovic would fix a match, but I have to admit this one looks suspicious. Even Santoro felt something was off, as you can see in the end.
Why would the #3 ranked player in the world need to fix a match? He already had made millions. Match fixing is done by the guys ranked 400th who don't make enough money to even pay for travel and hotels at tournaments.
i absolutely love santoro - he's my favorite player - but tbh djokovic had an absolutely grueling season and i kinda thought he tanked this match at the time
He's so deceptive. He lulls you into a false sense of security. Just kind of casually bats the ball back and forth. Like an old gent at the country club then pulls some crazy s**t out of the bag. Runs down everything too. I really miss him. As good as today's young players are, I just don't see any creativity in their game.
the court was so open. nole could have taken advantage of that. move santoro around and wear him out. place the ball well. oh well, maybe nole was tired.
Anybody who came on this video to write how this match is irregular, private frustracions treat on other place, Novak Djokovic will have 20 grand slams, and he will be the greatest tennis player of all times. the most important is that he is great person first of all. Idemooo Nole brate!
+rmkela7 Maybe off the court but on the court he isn't.Look how he was behaving when Nadal was beating him and how Nadal behaves when Djokovic dominates -way better
Santoro on the forhand side hits 95% of the time a slice shot. I cannot understand why he does that all the time. He only hits "normaly" to do a passing shot.
Well, even to me, as a nole fan, it seems like he's throwing this match away on purpose, or that he was sick, I wouldn't have any other logical explanation for Djokivic's playstyle in here...
Do you play tennis? As a amateur-competitive player, one comes across a lot of so-called 'slicers', and believe me, looks are deceiving! They may not look very good, but they are damn hard to play! Seems to me Djokovic just had a lot of trouble adjusting to the style of play
Daniel Naidu Well, yes, you are absolutely right. In fact, I played tennis for 9 years, so I know what you mean. I myself lost to uncomfortable "slicers" many times, so is not something new for me... but it's hard to think (at least for me) that a simple slicer could give to a player with such quality as Novak so many problems... I find it curious, to say the least...
I agree with you, it definitely seemed like he gave it away on purpose. Perhaps there may have been somekind of a large bet going on at that time which is actually quite common in the atp, for example, tipsarevic vs khachanov a few years ago at the Kremlin Cup. As a result Nole may have simply tried to help a friend out or something
Guys, stfu saying Djokovic was shit. He was a couple of months away from winning his first slam, was ranked no.3 in the world, and had just made the us open final. Djokovic was far from shit. He was good. Just not great, but still a very good player back then. The fact that the ageing and nearly retired Santoro was able to beat him is nothing short of a miracle and a showcase of fabrice's (the magician as he was called) exceptional talent. Courts were faster back then so djokovics poor movement back then was exposed and the versatility of fabrice showed the no.3 in the world how to play tennis.
This blue and green court was very slow, Paris changed surface that year or the year before. Djokovic poor movement is just plain wrong, movement has always been his strong point.
Extremely suspicious match. Playing medium slow and hitting lots of balls before the T allowing Santoro to approach. Also lots of balls to the center of the court allowing Santoro to dominate.
+Dougie D Top 10 doesn't necessarily mean his prime time tho.Now that he is no. 1,you can say that it is his prime time.We cannot compare RF prime and djoko not at prime.
tenis is very tricky, you can be better than someone, but if you dont play it on the spots, have a game that makes you vulnerable with some players kind of techniques, let the other take you onto his tramp or else, you are fucked
This match is legendary since there is no more Santoro in today's world of male pro tennis. Hsieh su wei only stands out in WTA..!
What people dont realise who have never played is that Santoro was a very difficult player to face and frustraring to play against because he spun the ball so much frequently taking all the pace off the ball. john smith you’re proving his point
not for schalken he did hit the ball so flat. 3-0 h2h
@@alvinsluis805 Oh if you worked him out he was 100% beatable
Especially Safin 🙂
Bullshit. He was just a pusher. Any pro player worth their salt can bagel him
Fabrice Santoro, what an awesome shirt. It's like he's at a weird disco party
Or plays for Celtic Glasgow
If your forehand doesn't work....
Just play with 2 backhands!!!
Or 2 handed forehands
This made me laugh way too much haha
If santoro played in the 70s with wooden rackets he'd probably be considered an all-time great. His game isn't as effective with the modern equipment but he had so many great upsets of higher ranked players.
French Nastase he would have been.
Don't underestimate the Magician.
Santoro often made players look worse than normal. Miss him very much.
That two handed tap back is lethal.
KDBBM II
6:44 that has to be one of the greatest shots ever!
Indeed!
Finally somebody with my playing style.
For those who cannot understand how he managed to win against Nole (and other No. 1 or top ten): even if Santoro never managed to be ranked in the top 10, he still won 2x AO in double and made 2x other GS finals in double at the French & Wimbledon. Not too bad for a "limited" player.
Fabrice santoro was indeed ranked in the top 10😂
That was one annoying emoji@@gpet-dr2bs
@@anotherfakepresident8432 cool
I remember how Safin hated to play against him.
6:44 - 6:58 what a point and what a shot
His shirt is just magnificent ! a beautiful lacoste *.*
genius like this make me cry, my game has improved thanks to them
"nothing like a set and a break down to inspire you to play better"
loses game
Djokovic is a Baseliner Santoro is crafty
The crafty guy won 😆

it seems like an exhibition
I'll take a prime santoro in this matchup anyday
lol no
C'est incroyable en fait Djokovic était un vrai attaquant !!
I think he just piled misery on all the future big 4 youngsters at least once. This guy really teached them how to play tennis. :D
Novak literally didn't even try against santoro here. Fabrice asked him at the net if he was okay too, even he was weirded out by novaks lack of effort. This was back to when novak wouldn't even try in matches and retire way too early
wait does he have a double handed forehand
+Donbarzini yes that was his thing :)
Because he is like woman no power oh my god not really man
Double handed forehand apparemntly more consistent
He has a cemetery for #1 players. Only a few of them could escape Santoro including Nadal Murray and Kafelnikov.

I don't remember how good was Djoko back then. But I have the impression that someone made a huge profit betting on Santoro...
+Rodrigo de Freitas commentator mentioned Joker was #3 at the time of this 2007 match...
Djokovic had his breakthrough year at that point (beat prime Fed in Canada & reached the us open final). Not to discredit Santoro's impressive victory but Nole had a stomach bug or some kind of minor injury during this match
he won the AO against Tsonga three monnts later but he was very tired in this end of 2007 season match.
Almost ha
A lot of people don't realize how Santoro could be hard to play... Ask Safin lol.
+david vincent You are right!
If Safin would rather die than play Santoro then you understand how difficult it can be for many players.
You don't understand tennis.
Santoro force other players to change their game which is very destabilizing.
He is amazing.
Where i can find that shirt santoro wearing? It looks dope
C'est incroyable comme Djokovic à la même tête il ne vieillit pas !!!
Incroyable
The Magician!
This is not the real Djokovic game. points looks very suspicious :40 3:51 4:09 5:42 7:22 7:35
Reviens Santoroo !
How does Santoro use the practice courts? Does he just grind from the baseline? How does he work in all that slicing action?
nice video. That day, Santoro's terrible tennis made another victim... so funny.
+Vincent Schmitt Its not terrible if he won is it! That's just his way of playing, and we all have our own ways.
Santoro, the best pusher to play the modern game. He made the most of his talent time and again. The spoiler of spoilers.
not surprised that some media accused Djoko to lost this match on purpose...
Because he did.
It's hard to believe Djokovic would fix a match, but I have to admit this one looks suspicious. Even Santoro felt something was off, as you can see in the end.
Santoro knew from the start, gave a few weird looks. Didn't celebrate at all. This was fixed 100%. Pretty obvious.
Why would the #3 ranked player in the world need to fix a match? He already had made millions. Match fixing is done by the guys ranked 400th who don't make enough money to even pay for travel and hotels at tournaments.
@@emphryio bc atp said so.
I don't think Djoko had a money problem considering he made the US Open final that year, which already gives a ton of prize money for the runner up.

the court was so open. nole could have taken advantage of that. move santoro around and wear him out. place the ball well. oh well, maybe nole was tired.

this is Djokovic 2017
The funniest matches are when BOTH players are trying lose.
Santoro doesn’t hit backhand slices except on a big stretch
djokovic might be on a losing streak from now on
I love all the salty djoko fans in comments:D
I see a lot of confused people
It is undeniable that he looked weird in this match though.
I'm not sure it's his fans who point out he wasn't trying to win. Tanking in a Masters 1000 is hardly something to be proud of.
djoker looked like he let santoro win...lowkey.
+Brad Holt he did lol looking back at it now they reckon this is match he threw with betting match fixing.
