- The Spatz3 gastric balloon is the first fully-adjustable weight loss balloon, approved by the FDA in October, 2021.
Dr. Christopher McGowan, MD, MSCR, AGAF of True You Weight Loss, is one of the first physicians in the United States to offer the Spatz balloon, and serves as a Principal Investigator in the Spatz FDA post-approval study.
The main advantage of the Spatz balloon is that it can be adjusted -- fluid can be removed to help with ongoing symptoms, or added to potentially boost weight loss. This is in contrast to other stomach balloons (such as Orbera), which cannot be adjusted once they are placed in the stomach. In this video, Dr. McGowan performs a Spatz UP-adjustment for a patient who has had her balloon for 4 months, and is ready for an increase in balloon size. Here, Dr. McGowan explains the entire process real-time. The entire non-surgical weight loss procedure takes roughly 5-10 minutes.

I just dont understand how the food carries on its natural journey ?
The balloon seems to totally block anything that needs to pass ?

How can I join your clinical studies
Hello i have my surgery next month but i was told i will need it for a year. Is there any thing i should be concerned about?
Was anyone else eating solids by week two or three?
What is the maximum volume that can be put into the gastric balloon ?

Which one do you recommend better Orbera or Spatz?
It really depends on individual preference. Spatz3 has a longer dwell time (8 months vs 6) and is adjustable, but both balloons work by the same principle (delaying gastric emptying). Spatz is only available within a clinical study at this time in the US. Ultimately, cost and availability will also be important considerations.
Do adverse events or N/V etc increase when balloon migrates to pylorus? It’s a much narrower space.
Any worries about balloon migrating into the small bowel and potentially causing an obstruction? I guess I need to read the study.
Was the patient under general anesthesia?
Our preference is general anesthesia for Spatz balloon adjustments and removals, for airway protection, but it’s not mandatory.
Just got mine 6 days ago. Doctor, is it normal to had dehydration esp on the 1-5 days after? I done it in istanbul and after the procedure they basically leave me with nothing, i couldnt even get information of where to buy the juice/IV cz of dehydration. And i had 2 transit flight on day 4 so it was grim and very traumatizing.
Sorry that happened. It’s always good to see a doctor that has a post operative plan that includes what to do to prevent dehydration etc…nutritionist.
How do you feel after the procedure have you lost any weight please let me know I am considering it
How are you doing? Are you still have the balloon? How is your journey?
