You’re starting to understand that Taylor’s lyrics often transcend time and place. The stories are often deeply personal but she writes in a way that you picture the scenes in your mind. You can often imagine yourself in the story too or someone you know. Taylor is timeless and can exist in so many spaces and styles.
This is the first time that they were all playing this whole album as every person did their parts in their home studios as everything was closed due to Covid. Taylor was bored two days into Covid and decided to make an album so she built a studio in her home. Every person had a different part to do. They’d talk on the phone, send emails, etc. Then they got together at Long Pond Studios to play them for the first time because as Taylor put it, “it didn’t feel real until they played it together (after they quarantined and tested). Bon Iver (Justin Vernon) was wearing a mask because he had a camera crew there when he performed his part, so they could do it on a split screen. She made 2 whole albums during Covid. She’s very productive! The people she was working with are so professional and everyone was excited about this project. She’d never done anything like this before and it turned out beautifully. Especially this album.. this song is absolutely my favorite. ❤
Word of caution, I see someone suggested Ronan, make sure you have tissues within arms reach. Ronan Thompson was a little boy who died of cancer before his 4th birthday. Taylor had been following Mya Thompson's blog about her dealing with the cancer of her son and his death. Taylor felt compelled to write a song, so she called Mya (because she is Taylor Swift she can get phone numbers) anyway Mya wasn't home so Taylor left a message. Imagine her listening to that message. Anyway, Taylor credited Mya as a co-writer since she used Mya's blog, and all the proceeds go to childhood cancer research. Taylor has only sung this song in public a couple of times, once for the cancer foundation and when Mya attended Taylor's concert. When it came time for Taylor to re-record she decided to put it on her Red album as a vault track to reclaim all her music. ua-cam.com/video/kdiBc40gW7s/v-deo.html Here is the link for the best MV from Taylor's channel. Remember the tissues, it is truly a beautifully sad song. Two years later the family welcomed a baby girl, her name is Poppy Ronan Thompson.
I hear she asked Maya for permission for it to be a vault track as well, as she didn’t want to upset the family by bringing it back up if they didn’t want her to. They did because it helps Ronan live on. ❤
Your analysis of this song makes me very excited for you to explore more of her catalog. You are in for a ride. Her writing is so full of metaphors, literary references, there are connected storylines within songs and albums, layered/multiple meanings.. that coupled with her visuals, tours, fanlore, Easter eggs/puzzles. She is an all immersive artist. As a fan, it is so incredible to watch people react to her artistry because it helps us relive the moments we have had. It is true. We will always support an authentic reactor with an open mind. Love this channel!!
Another great reaction, thank you! I think you'd really like "THE GREAT WAR". It's a lyric video, but of course she'll paint the pictures for you. :-) Thanks, again, looking forward to your next deep dive!
Another great reaction! I love that you listen to the song first and then go back through with the deep dive! It shows that you care about the meanings behind the lyrics and we appreciate it!! Can’t wait for the next one!!!
for a heartwrenching song? listen to Never Grow Up. The Best Day. then Soon You'll Get Better. and finish with Ronan. The first ones are nostalgic; last ones are about fear and loss.
@@carlap3933 he could end it with her Live Lounge performance from 2019; Lover, London Boy, Holy Ground, Phil Collins' I Can't Stop Loving You. 😍 The full performance is like the Truth (X Files) ---- someone posted it on YT.
This is from The Long Pond Sessions that was available on Disney plus for her album Folklore. She wrote and released this album during lockdown. They all performed their parts at home and to film this was the first time Taylor, Aaron Dessner and Jack A. Performed these songs together in person. And there was the surprise second album Evermore. I would recommend watching because she explains the songs before singing each one. I absolutely loved watching her sing the entire album live.
When you view the Long Pond videos, I suggest you include the interviews.....enlightening. This was done during covid and recorded in separate locations. The intro interview explains it.
The "understudy" is a term describing the person in a stage play who is the back-up performer if the star actor, playing the main character, can't perform. They study the lines and learn the part on the off chance they're needed to fill in. "I can see you staring honey...those eyes add insult to injury...like he's just your understudy, like you'd get your knuckles bloody for me" Her old boyfriend whom she's broken up with is jealous of her new boyfriend, staring at them with daggers in his eye thinking the new guy is an interloper, someone temporary who he'd like to punch out.
Great reaction. I really like your analysis of the lyrics, and it made me think of how this song could relate to The Bolter from her newest album, which never occurred to me before. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on loml or My Tears Ricochet.
not a hall in a house; a hall in an apartment building. She kicked him out of her house; if all he had in it fit in one box, he didn't really invest that much in the relationship. He seems stunned; but is his denial really hurt, or just his bruised ego? They don't really talk to each other, even when they say the same things. oh, the word you're looking for is "metaphor." Probably the best duet yet...a folklore favorite! Great breakdown on the lyrics. Yes it was during Covid 19, and the they do talk about that in The Long Pond Studio Sessions on Disney. They give a background of the whole album. It is a great watch, highly recommend it.🥰 Love the way do that call and response in this song. Justin Vernon's voice (Bon Iver) is sooo good.
I like that you listen to it twice and do the lyric deep dive second. Its different than other reactors and you’re really bringing something new to the space!!!
You have to react to "my tears ricochet" it's about when u have someone close to u and then decide to betray u, and they know how to hurt u because they were once close to u. Taylor wrote it about her old manager, he was so close to her and taylor took him as a second father to her but he sold her albums to scooter braun, and🛴refused to sell them back to her and she decided to re-record them and that's why we have taylor's version. He stole her first 6 albums, she recorded 4 and now we are waiting for her to release the last 2(reputation and taylor swift [her debut album])
Scott Borchetta was not Taylor's manger. He was the head of her former record label. She was the first artist to sign up with his record label. The betrayal was horrific.
This was my first time hearing this song. It's definitely a sad song but it's very relatable. I lived in a very small city for manyl years and seeing an ex out with somebody else was very much a two way street. But if you really want her most heart-wrenching song that would be Ronin. It was inspired through Swift reading a mothers online blog about her journey through her sons illness to his death just before his fourth birthday. All the photos in the video are of Ronin, his mother, and his family. As a father who lost a daughter that one really cuts through the heart. Swift set it up so all proceeds from the song, the video, and her songwriting royalties go to charity for sick children. She also listed Ronin's mother as co-writer of the song and she set up a foundation in Ronin's name that her songwriting royalties go to help other families. That song tears me up every time.
The hand movement she does isn't performance, or at least I don't think so. Many vocalists mimic the movement in the melody with hands/arms whatever, especially when outside their comfortable range or making big jumps. It helps them visualize or "feel" the movement. Or at least, it helped me back when I used to sing regularly. Love your interpretation of the lyrics.
It’s great you reacted to the Long Pond studio session! She performs all the songs on Folklore like this! You could do a double reaction- the Long Pond session (including the discussion she has about the meaning of the lyrics of each song) followed by the lyric or music video!
They had a very fragile relationship that was barely hanging on (balancing on breaking branches). She finally had enough, and he doesn’t get it. She’s seen this film, so she’s gonna dip. When you’re at the movies and you wanna leave, you go out that dark side door out into the street. She’s done, he’s still all “wha happened?”
This isn’t sets. This video is from a documentary called the long pond sessions. It’s filmed in the studio. This was the first time they could meet to play the songs together. All recording for this album and the next (Evermore) was made remote during Covid. Taylor built a temporary studio in her house and worked with Aron and Jake sending each other their work. Folklore and Evermore 2 of the best albums of all time.
Even though you're new to this, you've become a very good reaction channel. Stay honest and true, and the more it will explode with Swiftie subs. Keep analysing as you are. You've hit the motherlode...Taylor. No other artist draws immediate attention like Taylor does. The Swifties are an awesome group/fanbase, so the more of us you attract to your channel... well, you'll soon see.
Enh. It was their first time performing it together. All their recordings like Long Pond and the album version were done in separate studios because of Covid.
I used to worry he would haunt me after he died and Im actually thankful we got that out of the way before he passed on. Its really felt like the saw movies and the truman show got mashed up.
His mother is Carolina and she said shed disown him if I left, which I knew she was hoping Id do. So she is his karma. I neve used to fully understood when she used to say I brought you into this world I can take you out of it. Seemed morbid than, but thank her now!!!
Enjoyed your reaction. Below is a link for a raw, emotional performance of what many critics and fans consider to be Taylor’s best song to-date, All Too Well. It is worth a listen because every listen gives back to Maya and family. It’s so beautifully and respectfully written.

3:38 part of why some singers use hand movements like this is to help them stay on pitch.
I really enjoyed watching this with you! I enjoyed your analysis!
One of my favorites.
LOVED EVERYTHING about this reaction video - the initial reaction & then your interpretation breakdown.
I love your reaction and interpretation of this song. You have a keen sense of the emotions going on. 🫶❤️ Keep the reactions coming.
Thank you! Really appreciate it and will do
You're reaction was so wonderful. My grandson who's 14, and i really were impressed by you. THANKS ❣️
Wow, thank you!
❤ There are quite a few good songs from the Long Pond session. You should listen to the live 1989 World Tour Out Of The Woods.
I like the one from the Grammy's, but maybe it's because of the pixie haircut (and Antonoff hamming it up on stage). both real good.
