@clavsicus your incorrect about the drone carrier it has capabilities such as anti sub ware fare capabilities, anti-air missile capability. Also you said small drones would be all it could carry, you are incorrect its deck is capable of launching heavy drones and helicopters as well. There is also speculation that it may be able to launch the F-35B vertical takeoff fighter aircraft. ua-cam.com/video/8L2fBI5XV3E/v-deo.html
@@Diogo7442 I AM correct. I don't know what kind of copium effect drug you're smoking, but I'd like to have some to see if I can fantasize about how our military's capabilities could have been if only the right budget and people were in place. -Any boat, even a small fiscal vessel is capable of anti-sub warfare if you attach a towed array sonar, and a torpedo launcher, doesn't mean it's ideal especially if it doesn't have the speed, like in this case. This vessel would be perfect for that if it sends out drones capable of deploying sonobuoys, or drag sonars, or send out UUVs and USVs. You really think the government will allow the investment for that? It will be the minimum of minimum as usual. -It has no anti-air capabilities, and the only way for this to get it would be by using 20' standard containers, which is what they're gonna be using to switch between different mission modules (hydrographic tools and sonars for example, but could also get mining or demining modules etc. if they wished) and in this case for anti air missiles, the containers would have to be on the flight deck, which would take up the space for the drones and ultimately defeat the purpose of even having a flight deck. According to the info we have, it won't even come equipped with a CIWS to protect itself, there are 2 point defense guns according to one of the designs, which is larger than the one we got stuck with, but that alone is not "Anti-Air Warfare", a CIWS is just a point defense weapon which any large ship usually has. This vessel is not and will not be capable of AA Warfare, ours will have no weapons... Again, unless they ad-hoc it and fill the deck with containerised missiles in place of the drones for some weird situation, in which case if they had to do that in the first place, means they already fucked up by not getting dedicated ships for the purpose. -It will not launch any heavy drone, the navy already showed on their PowerPoint presentations that it will carry only up to class II drones... So no drones of 600Kg or above flying above the clouds shooting antiship missiles of the sort and certainly no F-35s either and even if the F-35 fitted on the deck (which it doesn't), they still wouldn't be able to be used there as the deck won't have a non-skid coating to withstand the heat. Newer drones keep coming out and a lot of class II drones are now capable of accurately dropping bombs with proper targeting systems, but nothing that would be used for Surface Warfare that would make this ship replace a real Frigate/Destroyer. All the drones will be used for is surveillance/reconnaissance, search and rescue, and hydrography. Can possibly think of kamikaze drones in containers to be launched by the swarms of 100s synchronized and controlled by ai, almost on a sci-fi level, but we are not there yet, but then again, if it's in containers, that could be done on any ship type. -It will not carry heavy helicopters. It is still unclear whether our version will have a ramp at the end or not, if it does, it's also unclear that it could mean it can only land 1 heavy helicopter (22t) at the back, if it doesn't, then it can land 2 (1 heavy at the back and 1 medium (11t) at the front), but landing doesn't mean it will carry the helicopters. Also helicopters will not be able to land along the flight deck and the helicopter hangar can only harbour 1 medium helicopter. The 2 side hangars with elevators are for drones only, they are too small for helicopters. Don't know if you follow our military programs to know there hasn't been any decent program in the past 20 years that is able to be completed according to its original plans without being downgraded down the line or outright cancelled and the navy has been getting the shit end of the stick for the past 200 years. Everything is kept to a minimum there are no war reserves and if a war breaks out, we'll be caught with the pants down. Gouveia e Melo has a vision to have this ship built to experiment on and in the future create a new vessel type that would replace frigates and destroyers, that's all beautiful on paper, but with our budget and the government and people's lack of interest in military affairs, it will not happen. It was originally meant to be concepted in Portugal, designed in Portugal and built in Portugal... What ended up happening was, concepted in Portugal, designed by a private company (Damen) and worse, it got patented by Damen and now it's being built abroad. The admiral took the initiative to propose this idea since it will be paid 3/4 by the EU, I don't oppose the idea of this ship, I oppose what they're trying to sell the people as a do it all machine that is unrivalled by anything ever done, which is utter bullshit, but with the way our military is handled, it's only going to cause more problems, this ship is going to replace our hydrographic ships (have 4 and we know it will replace at least 2 of them, don't know about the other 2), which means a reduction in the number of units available, then there's the problem that it is only 1 ship with the duties of multiple, which means, when it's in maintenance there is no other vessel available to take its place and getting a second one is gonna be hard as there won't be EU money again for it and the government will just say no and the people, ignorant as they are, will just oppose it because the people (and the government) view this "civilian" ship as some sort of "Aircraft-carrier-stardestroyer". In short: A multipurpose vessel for hydrography, surveillance, scientific research, logistics, hospital and transport and to experiment new tech as they already do in Troia. It does everything except what a "warship" does. It's nice that it can transport more than 200 people and more than a dozen vehicles, can also have multiple inflatable boats for the marines, so it can act as a mini LPD at least. It will not have any self defense capabilities and it can't have them either until the PRR program finishes, after that, they can modernize it with whatever they want, but VERY LIKELY WILL NOT, since that's how it's done in Tugalandia.
