No matter what level of drumming I get to, or am at, I will always click on "beginner" videos done by a professional, especially you. You never know what teeny thing you overlooked when starting out, and to be given free knowledge, why not give a watch, there's no downside.

Absolutely. I guess I can call myself an advanced drummer, as I know enough to teach beginners, but Ive never really _locked in_ any of the numerous disciplines in drums to actually think of myself as someone even approaching a pro. Therefore Im always hoping that I can find pros talking about what issues I have with my own playing, and Rob has helped in that instance quite a lot.
Also, basically all the rookie mistakes Rob described here are something I see most of the time, and sometimes its easy to correct, and sometimes its not. I cant tell you enough how discouraging it can feel to fail at teaching one kid proper grip for months, despite the fact Ive successfully taught other kids using the same approach.
Just like Rob said, though, its not the kids fault, as it mostly has to do with how naturally coordinated they are, as well as if their personality can handle concentrating on a repetitive action for extended periods of time.

This is the very first time, in all the video drum lessons I have watched, where drummers are told to RE-LAX. What my guy Rob says is absolute KEY. Anticipation is a killer for smooth drumming.

I hate calling myself advanced but I'm very experienced and I try to be professional, but I'm always learning and so I like to watch vids like this (and all of your other vids as well) because I know I'll never stop learning. Thank you for being an awesome and wise teacher.

Practicing strokes on a surface with no rebound helped me significantly learning single and double strokes. A pillow or couch cushion works great. Exercise it for a short period of time and then move to a pad (but slowly!) and you will feel a huge difference and improvement over your control and dynamics.
Of all the UA-cam drummers who give instruction, Rob is the only guy I find who isn’t pushing his own ego . It’s all about the listener gaining information to improve and it helps me loads. I am almost 60 ,stiff in all the wrong places and generally worn jointed ,Robs tips are invaluable.

LOL about the worn joints! Both knees replaced...twice. Right hip replaced FOUR times(infections SUCK). So, I really have to work on my Kick Drum foot work...it's not a natural move anymore. But VERY glad I found Rob's channel in my first week of sitting behind a kit.

Me too, i was flat footed with my bass kick too but was doing the high hat right.

I play heels down on the bass drum a lot but for a couple of reasons:
• It's less tiring (so it gives you a lot of endurance, especially for long gigs or after a difficult fast song/part);
• It's easier for nuances and soft playing (the way you just said for the hi-hats!!)
However, I also need to play heels up, when I want to play HARDER and/or FASTER.
So, in my opinion, you should know both :D
The rest is brilliant advice of course!!
Ergonomics can influence technique which can influence fatigue. I sit higher so playing heel down is much more tiring due to the angles. Heel up is way less fatiguing for me because it's a short calf contraction -- it's not about pushing your toes or foot down; it's about picking your heel up.
This must be THE 1st lesson I should have learnt as a beginner…but still not too late. Thanks a lot Rob.
Looking at this older video of Rob trying to show beginner drummers a lot of pointers is incredible they are very important points. I’ve watched a lot of videos of Rob he is a very very dedicated teacher he really cares about people learning how to play the instrument properly. I give this man a lot of credit I have a Lotta respect for him.

Hey Stuart, I got you beat (excuse the Pun), I'm 69 yo. Having returned to playing drums after 51 years. Now retired , with more time to enjoy a initial love that was abandoned due to many things including getting married, no room for drum sets, and of course family responsibilities, etc., I play solely for enjoyment / hobby. I'm certainly no Rob Brown, but I am content at this time to be able to play along to some of My Music: Beatles, Stones, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac [although Going Your Own Way still gives me difficulty learning the "groove"], CCR, Petty, Meloncamp, Zombies, Hollies, The Animals, even some Eric Clapton, Oh and Linda Ronstandt [She and her studio band were really wonderful] etc...... basic Rock and Roll. I fashioned a new Basement "play center" - Mancave (I hate that term, but it fits for now), created during 2020 from working at home due to COVID (that SUX), purchasing new stereo equipment and 2 pairs of new Speakers, to play My Music and tom play My Drums. In October, due to many spinal issues with arthritis, I am out - retired. My wife of 46 years gave me a Cheapo Gammon Drum set (yes I still use that term instead of Kit), for Xmas 2018. I was big time surprised because I had only mentioned that I might go to a music studio to play drums again ......To get it out of My system. Man, I'm so very glad she did...... I have tweaked the drum set in many ways: New drum heads, learning how to more fine tune the drums (that does make a big difference), added much better Paiste Cymbal packs, some added Hardware and most importantly added a Used DW Nickel over Brass metal Snare drum 14x6.5 (wow factor over the Gammon snare), and now just added a Mapex Piccolo snare 13 X 3.5 and a Pdp Concept series Maple Popcorn snare 10 X 6 for reasonable $$$$ which I have attached to my HiHat stand. Rob has indicated in other Vids that the Player makes the Drums , not the other way around. But I do find that as I improved the sound of my "Kit", it does yield some more confidence when playing.

There's still some fragments still lurking in the Sydney suburbs. The authorities are are demanding areas to get tested to contain it.. Enough of that, now.
Thanks for you interesting story.I had an opportunity on Saturday 12th to attend a drumming group run by' Red Cymbals' for a full on free session with other like minded drummers. 2 kits, facing each other. Thunderous basses! I found out how woeful my tecnique was. But played on and learning from the younger players( that had better co-ordination) even a young 4yo got up with his dad on an opposite kit and had a copy-dad- beatoff. I finished the afternoon buying 2 Red 10inch splash cymbals.
While ive been no stranger to a kit in the past, playing and KNOWING what to play are major differences. Rob's sessions on U-tube among others ,are eye openers to what's attainable So here Go's. Best Happiness for Christmas. . Cheers Guy
@@grumpydrummer8960 Hey Stuart, thx for the info and your concern over COVID. Hope everybody can avoid or at least have limited effects of COVID, the scourge of our lifetimes. I thank my wife almost daily for getting that drum set in 2018. It gives me lots of enjoyment to be able to play to completion some of the songs that I play to. Although I don't really practice rudiments, I do play daily. If I can complete Meloncamp or Stones or Petty tunes without missing beats and adding my own aggressive fills, I'm a happy camper 😄
Hi Guy (and Rob) - 63 year-old recent retiree here, getting back to drumming after a 40+ year hiatus for career, marriage, kids, etc. Geared up with a Roland v-drums electronic kit and it is so good. And no neighbors complaining about the noise like when I was young playing my Slingerland kit. Also just picked up bass guitar for the first time and am loving it. Cheers from California.
Grip and making sure your matched grip is actually matched is ridiculously important. 30 years after I started I had to start over and teach my stupid hand (the other one was brilliant) to not be stupid. It took 2 years. On a positive note, however, is I improved more in those 2 years than I had in the previous 15.
Thanks for the tuning tips I needed smelling sauce after that it floored me. Not tuned everything up less than 5 minutes almost as fast as I can turn the lugs. You're awesome . Drumeo is blessed to have you.

I started playing when I was 13, in 1998… there was no UA-cam back then, I just taught myself… I’d be a whole lot better today if videos like this were accessible.
Now I have my own style, my foot pedal style has limitations when it comes to speed and I still can’t do a super clean drum roll with doubles…
I sound great, to non drummers… but I know I have limitations because of improper technique.
I wish that someone told me how important it was to have solid time as a beginner. Always USE A METRONOME!! when you are practicing 😁👍🏾
@@doubts All songs will have a BPM to set your metronome to, it just might change often i.e. Stairway to Heaven.
Metronome is a good thing. I try to develop my own time own feel. I should know when I'm out? Muscle memory

I just got my first kit and I'm 42 lol I got beat with my hands but trying to throw in the kick drum and hi hat no way lol how long did it take you to get your feet working with your hands

Great run through, couldn't agree more. I teach as well and just wanted to add how important posture is especially for beginners. That's another bad habit that really comes back to haunt you down the road. Keep up the great work!

First thing I did, before trying to play anything, was research grip and find my comfort zone. Makes a tremendous difference in control, speed, and endurance while playing. Great vid, Rob!

Great video and I learned some things but have never played heel up on the bass drum. I simply can't play fast enough or with enough control. Heel down I can do almost anything. A lot depends on correct stool height however, and you are totally right on this!

Totally agree on investing in the pad. My instructor made me play on a snare only for two years before I could touch the kit. Totally was worth it. Great stuff for the rookies.
I think too many parents of beginner drummers outfit their kiddo drummer with too much, sometimes right from the start. I’ve been drumming 50 years. I remember the thrill of getting my first pair of sticks! (Playing on a 5 gallon plastic pail). Then getting my first snare (a Pencrest snare - I think it was made by JC Penny. It was actually quite junky!). My first cymbal. Etc., etc. you get the picture. Taking the next step was alway exciting I have seem many nice sets being sold by parents whose kid played 6 mos and lost interest.
Now I understand! I’ve locked up but now I know push with control the next step too speed just amazing can’t explain this mans guru explanation
Mr. Rob "Beat down" Brown. I stopped in just to see this helpful video. You make great points and it doesn't hurt for a drummer with some years under their belt just to see this. You always inspire me to be a better drummer and I have 20yrs under my belt.

More great basic tips. ‘Ray Charlesing’ has a place in funky stuff though - especially when looking in the opposite direction with an ‘Oof!’ Bernard Purdie face. Not as a default, but to add some “Oh yeah, baby, feel that ‘Ka Teeeeesh Ah’ colour” I wouldn’t be without it 😀

These are amazing tips. Started taking lessons after playing around by myself for 4 months. The best tip I got was "hit the drum, come on dig in" Whether the snare or base, I was hitting it too softly

I clicked because I have learned that I can learn things even from a complete beginner, so material aimed at a beginner may contain some little nugget of info that is useful. If nothing else, I enjoy watching your instruction.
There is a place for playing flat footed. Both is ideal to teach your students.
I agree - on the bass drum playing heel down helps a drummer have better control for dynamics using their ankle like a wrist. Imagine playing with just your arms and not wrists. With heel down, if you want to play an accent, you lift your heel to play louder. If your playing heel up only, then you have nowhere to go but higher and have to lift your entire leg more to accommodate playing louder.

I started learning the drums in 2009. I found an old Aria kit in a basement and bought some drum magazines. The notes were easy to grasp so I started playing. BUT I naturally started hitting the high hat with my left arm, even though I am right handed - I thought it was only logical to strike it with the arm closest to it. In retrospective I would not really call it a mistake, since I gained a lot from it, but it was a tough start. AND I am also guilty of the feet thing. I did it for years!!!

You just saved me from myself! I'm picking the drums back up and was about to retrain my left foot to pick the whole leg up because I thought I was doing it wrong with toe lifts... 🙌

I’ve been playing 30+ years and I love beginner drumming videos. Because I always learn something from simplicity.
The only comment I have is regarding drum set up. I angle my kick away from center to line up with my foot/pedal (think Travis Barker).
To “square it up” to the stage & then angle your body to match puts your foot at an inward angle. That’s not very conducive to human factor ergonomics & you’ll have ankle pain after long gigs.
It may not look like how everyone else does it, but it’ll work for you in the long run. And that’s really all that matters to me.

Hi Rob from Owen from Oz. I am not a rookie and not advanced, some aspects I am really good at & others not so. I have been playing in a band for 18 years and still learning. I love your sessions - you are so cool and relaxed and super competent - & your ideas and advice and demonstrations are so relevant to me. I was aware of much you said here but there were one or two things I hadn’t been aware of eg. The high hat foot using toe (I was sort of doing but was thinking I should be using more leg/foot like with the kick. Keep up the great work.

I used to play for a long time (early) with “Stanky Arm” 😂. Kids, I can agree 100%, correct this. Makes a world of difference. Great vid for those young starters out there. 🇨🇦👍🏼
I watched the 8th beat video with the bass drum first. Right away I noticed the toms were level. Then I looked at mine. And I thought maybe there's something to that. Well now I know. Moving them right next practice

Omg bro I broke out in laughter when I saw the setup on the one kit at minute mark 3:09 lmao as a beginner that I guess has some common sense and thought to look at how other drummers have their kits set up makes me wonder who in their right mind would thunk that is right? That just looks so uncomfortable to play I am constantly making minor adjustments to make it easier to play with less effort between my drums and cymbals. Lol now back to the video. Awesome job so far I love it.

I've been playing more years than I want to say. I'm also an instructor/Show director for two School of Rocks in Florida. I have one of these bad habits. It's the cymbal height. I use a rack! 2 up 2 down. Ride cymbal is in a perfect height. All drums set what I call Cockpit set up. All my crash cymbals are at above shoulder height. I can reach them. However, I'll be doing a cymbal reset this week. Thanks Rob.
