I was just commenting the same thing earlier this morning to my husband. It was almost taboo back in the 70s-80s to like Queen. I was so surprised when I started watching these reaction videos that Freddie's early flamboyance just is no longer an issue and people who are new to Queen can really see their genius and musicality. It's ashame the Grammy Awards could never see past it until long after Freddie's death when they finally inducted them into the Hall of Fame (I think, or it might have been a lifetime achievement award).

    Steve - here's a lesson.
This song is a masterpiece combining 5 types of music into one and the thread throughout (lyrics) ties everything together.
A CAPELLA - is this real or fantasy
BALLAD - momma just killed a guy
OPERA - a little silhouette of a man
ROCK - you think you can stomp me
    CODA - nothing really matters
    Lyrics (over simplified) would be=
    • questioning reality
    • confession/turmoil
    • persecution/judgement
    • anger/rebellion
    • reflection/resolution
The recording of the music - too bad you didn't listen via quality headphones to notice the various use of speakers (I don't know what they call it)
The video as it pertains to the 'story' (conceptually)
Sillohette and overlapped imagery (annonyminity and fantasy)
Singing at the piano (telling his woahs to mom) facing reality of life rejecting him
The triangle of heads = court hearing accusing him of crime and lawyer pleading his case
The back and forth of Freddie/Roger - cross examination
The multiplied image of the 4 heads - the crowd cheering in the court (society mistreatment of an individual)
The rock concert stage - the anger of sentencing and being judged
The ending piano - resolve and realization judgment doesn't matter finding peace within himself

But yes, it's open to interpretation. These are just things I've read through the years from those who knew him best.

I laughed at the reaction to the clothes (worn only on stage I hasten to add) back in the 1970s . . . and realised in another 40 years people will be laughing at the 2022 clothes you are wearing! This song was revolutionary for lots of reasons: the length of the song - all others were 3 minutes maximum because that's what the radio stations wanted; it was a totally new style of 'modern' record; it was a mix of pop and opera. The sign of a true musician is that he doesn't just do one style. Get your family to watch Queen at the Live Aid concert at Wembley. Remind them there was no autotune back then - what you hear is what they sounded like!

When you have a spare ~40 minutes or so, you should listen/watch another YT reactor, Rick Beato, who did a detailed analysis of ‘why this song is so great’.. and his analysis included an interview with Brian May (Queen guitarist).. and his thoughts and recall on the song. They didn’t talk about the video.. but there’s a ton of information out there about it. You are correct, it’s thought to be the 1st made, bc Queen were touring at the time, and it was the only way they could have the song featured on ‘Top of the Pops’ TV show bc they couldn’t appear in person. Your appreciation of their music and abilities is great to watch.. keep it up!! Your family will come around!

  • @peggyh8937
    @peggyh8937 2 роки тому +14

Your family is hilarious! Re the clothes and style of the band...there were a lot of rock bands back then, especially in the U.S. Queen had to do something to stand out. Androgyny was a thing at the time with all the guys sporting long hair. Freddie's college degree was in graphic design so he had a very artistic visual eye. Most of the design elements could be attributed to him. He wore mostly women's tops/jackets, added the black nail polish to one hand and the glove to the other. All of this was an attempt to set the band apart from other rock bands...and it worked! David Bowie and later George Michael used the same trick. As Queen became more popular, the look of the band, particularly Freddie, changed dramatically. While this wasn't the first music video ever, it was the first video designed to be used as a promotional device and was largely responsible for transforming how the music business promoted their music and eventually sparked the development of MTV. The idea came about because of Britain's weekly tv show called Top Of The Pops(TOTP). That show was driving the music to the top of the charts in England so if you performed a good song on that show, it was likely your record would be a hit. The problem with the show is that they forced the bands to lip-sync, I'm guessing due to technical limitations. Queen hated lip-syncing but they needed their music to be on TOTP. The other problem with the show was that when they were out on tour, it was impossible to get back and make an appearance. Additionally, because Bo-Rhap was so extremely technically complex, there was no way they could perform the whole song live. For these reasons, they decided to make a Bo-Rhap music video so they could promote the song using their own choice of visuals and would not need to be present to perform. Believe it or not, the special effects were state-of-the-art at the time. The week after it aired on TOTP, it went to number 1 in England and remained there for 9 weeks. It's use on TOTP led to MTV about 7 years later in the U.S.

Even if you go back and look at Jimi Hendrix, he was already starting to wear strange clothes as well. We had just been through the hippie era and now music had become a production with costumes and the stranger the better. Definitely need to get out of the third grade, get past the clothes and check the talent. J/S. Just a suggestion, never bring those people back during another reaction. Freddie always pushed the limits of his outfits in the 70’s. That video was done for a tv show in the UK TOP OF THE POPS. They were getting ready to go on tour. They always played #1’s song so many time’s they got tired Of the video. This video made them back in 1975.

What I want to see now is more of your family reacting to more Queen…especially the live stuff. I have to admit that the Bohemian Rhapsody video can come off as a little strange…but the beauty of Queen is how the more you watch and hear, the more you begin to feel it and appreciate the talent. The whole band is great, but Freddie is something different. I love watching people fall completely in love with him as they come to appreciate his talent and his presence. Let the fam react to Somebody to Love, White Queen, You Take My Breath Away and Don’t Stop Me Now…I’m going to predict that after those, they will be Queen fans!

I felt your frustration. Shuddup and listen dammit! :) Felt like trying to introduce new artists to my teen!
This video was actually put together in about 4 hours. There was a popular TV show in the UK at that time called "Top of the Pops" and Queen was scheduled to be on it. This album had just come out so they were going on tour. The album was called "Night at the Opera" The minute they finished filming this, literally they left on tour. Top of the Pops could make or break an album. They filmed this so the TV show had something to play instead of them being there. This was wayyyyyy before MTV or VH1 (This was 1975) A google quote: “Bohemian Rhapsody” is generally recognized as the first ever promotional music video, kick-starting and setting the gold-standard for the genre for decades to come"
Throw "Somebody to love. Live in Montreal" at them. As someone said below.....if that doesn't hook them then there is no hope.

The band left room for interpretations. After I heard the song the first time, my mind were completely different than now, where I know much more aubout his life. Now i think it's like an outing. He killed the man he used to be, and now he is the man he is meant to be. He had a girlfriend and discovered step by step that he is gay.
For me it's a song of finding yourself, leave the one behind you, that others want you be, and finally be who you are and be free. But also feeling sad about the people who you might loose on this way because the want to keep the old person you were and don't accept your new you. But that are just my feelings and it's not only the lyrics that make this song ledgendary. The whole concept ist a masterpiece.

Just to clear a few things up . This song was NOT about Freddie killing a man. At least not literally. It was Freddie's coming out of the closet song. He was brought up in a very conservative mid eastern religion. Freddie knew at a young age he was Gay, and now that he was starting to become a well known artists on the way to superstar..he was terrified to come out to his family, his record company and friends.
back in the 70's to come out as gay was a sure way to kill a career. The song is a very creative way to express this fear inside him. The Man he killed in the beginning is HIMSELF. He has decided to kill the frightened Freddie, and just be who he is. The operatic section is the battle back and forth in his mind tormenting him. Then at the end he decides " Nothing really matters, nothing really matters to me " . His way of saying OK world here I come , here I am take it or leave it .
Queen was undoubtedly the greatest rock band of all time ..unique doesn't quite express what they contributed to music, and the thousands of other stars they inspired. Even Lady GaGa got her name from a Queen song " Radio GaGa"

    • @Codex7777
      @Codex7777 2 роки тому +1

That's your personal interpretation. Freddie never explained the meaning of the song to anyone. Not even to his band-mates. He never came out publicly and, amazing as it may seem now, the vast majority of people didn't have a clue that he was gay, until he announced he had AIDS, shortly before he died, roughly 16 years after this song was released.
It's perfectly fine to have personal interpretations and meanings for particular songs. The mistake is in trying to present them as THE definitive meaning, when they clearly aren't. I've even seen some people claim that as well as being a coming out song, it was also about him having AIDS. Even though the song was written long before the first cases were noted, roughly a decade before it was known what it was and 12 years before Freddie was diagnosed as being hiv+! :)

I'll take a stab at the lyrics for you: please note this is just a guess and my own personal interpretation.
first part of the song is Freddie realizing how he's going to disappoint his mother because he's not heterosexual and how he killed his old self by stepping into this new lifestyle and feels lost.
The second part, the operatic part, describes the struggle where Freddie is pulling against what he describes as the devil (Beelzebub) but it won't let him go.... He even says the devil has a place set aside for him during this part.
Then comes the angry part, where he is asking everyone if they think they can Stone him and spit in his eye and treat him like dirt because of his revelation.
And then at the end, he's come to acceptance of himself and saying nothing really matters to him. That's my personal interpretation of the song but it's a great song, an absolute masterpiece, and anyone who's going through a life struggle can relate to it.
(Oh by the way and yes Freddie was getting a lot more tail than your brother 😉😆😂)

The video effect where their image echoed to infinity behind them was actually created by one camera pointing at a video monitor and the signal from the camera being fed back to the monitor. In much the same way as if you did a live camera shot of a computer screen, you would see a video of the video of the video, etc... disappearing into the distance. Back then they didn't have computers to create these effects, they literally had to create them with what they had in the studio. The multiple choral shot was created using a special filter on the lens. They had to be really inventive back then.

After he got sick and seeing him going down hill, but always the perfect performer and voice. Listening and seeing him after the illness took hold, this song and several others I feel indeed fit what he was emotionally must have been going through. And I feel that maybe somehow the wonderful songs were indeed part of his future. either way we all love & miss him and are happy these songs are part of his legacy that are here forever to rember him as well as all the talented members of Queen. . . .

Freddie Mercury had a gift from God to be able to sing and perform as flawlessly as he did. Unfortunately, the 70s fashion would make anyone look ridiculous. I doubted he could be an attractive man till I saw him in 80s fashion, short hair and a mustache (Hey, he makes the 'stache work). He was quite an attractive guy and rightfully strutted the stage like a prized stallion. He is sorely missed yet will always live on as a legend.
