I think it important to understand this piece, the mindset of Beethoven when he wrote it. He was crushed, he loved the woman, royalty, and he was a mere servant of the Court. The first movement was him "crying in his beer," so to speak. It is very tender, quiet, heartrending. The second movement was the portrait of his love, hence its lightness. The third movement was expressive of his anger, the pain of a love that couldn't be realized. I never could play the 3rd movement. But when I was a pre-teen, trying to play the first movement, I failed because I didn't understand the sentiment. How could I, nobody ever explained this to me, I didn't even know where children came from. Now that I am 60, I understand it better, and play it (1st movement) more tenderly. Jim Kerr of Maryland
One of my professors told me that Beethoven had just finished a performance and was walking the streets with a friend. As they were walking, they heard someone trying to play one of his movements he just performed, badly. So Beethoven went to the source and saw that it was a girl playing the piano but she was blind. Beethoven wanted to show her how to play the piece properly, so he took her place on the piano. As he finished, he looked over to where the girl was sitting, in front of a window, and saw the rays of the moons light shining upon the girl's face. In that moment Beethoven began playing the beginning notes to Moonlight Sonata. It also didn't have this name, it was just an improvisation but through the years the name was given by someone anonymous.
It was about 6 years ago when I first heard this video (Then only 50.000 visitors had heard it). While admiring I decided to learn to play on classical guitar. Now I'm 53 and I can play this pieces!!! Thank You Mr. Lucarelli, I'll always be very thankful to You for Your inspiration and this wonderful performance!!!
As a pianist I know what it takes to pull off a perfect rendition of this piece. This mans command of the guitar and his concentration are amazing. Definitely worth sharing!
I grew up with an older brother who was a prodigious pianist and organist and listened to the Moonlight sonata a million times before making it the one song I memorised end to end on the piano as a teenager. Now aged 50 I've taken up classical guitar and am in awe of how close this sounds to a piano with my eyes shut... superb... thank you!!! :)
This music seems to be coming from heaven,,, I wish I could play Beethoven like that,my God how I wish I could reach that standard May God give you many more years of playing
All of your videos are of such beautiful songs. I put them on when I'm in a bad mood and it simply slips away into me playing along with the songs I can. (:
Michael Lucarelli Music keeps me alive! im into basically every genre, but I def appreciate classical! it has made history, and continues to touch peoples hearts to this day! Thank u for contributing, I was very inspired by ur vid :)
Michael Lucarelli Can you suggest something like this [whether it be yours or otherwise] I have a friend who wants something for relatively simple guitar/fingerpicking, like Game of thrones harry potter theme song, moonlight sonata, or Palchelbel's canon in D. Thank you for reading. You play beautifully. I very much enjoy your talent!
@Bill Martin, there is a difference between classical and acoustic guitar. Acoustic is any guitar, steel stringed or not, which was made to play without electric amplification. Classical guitar is usually played with nylon strings, and classically trained guitarists usually have a level of aptitude far above their acoustic brethren.
Nice spin, a rare moment when a guitar can hold the same weight as the piano... it is closer in the front, but then I am beginning to lose my hearing... you play 2 songs that I love as much as life and you do them well.
Such sadness this song evokes, its like its the end of the day and perhaps there is no tomorrow. looking for the silver lining, but seeing nothing. The overall feeling is hopeless. and time keeps marching on, same same same, wishing for a different outcome, and praying so, but on it goes
So beautiful. I am a beginner in playing guitar.I really love to play classic musics.Plaese help me to find easy ones step by step, to get better & better.
Michael I could listen to your music all day, I don't play but I can appreciate your skill and the passion you put into such a timeless, haunting and beautiful song. Thank you for uplifting me.
I love this version of Moonlight Sonata on classical guitar. This is, by far, my favorite piece of music, but it is because of the connection I feel with it. While pregnant with my son I played this song and told my unborn son stories. That was our time, just he and I, before he even knew my face or I knew his... This is the song in my heart, and it reminds me of a time that I was blessed to experience. Thank you for playing the song in my heart so beautifully, Michael Lucarelli.
I've been listening to your version of this song for years, I haven't listened to a better guitar variant, every time I find myself listening to this piece I find myself entranced. no matter what moon I may be in I find a blissful moment whilst this is playing, because of your music I have actually desired to learn to play the classical guitar. Thank you for everything you've done!
Putting this up on an old CRT adds to the artist effect plus the camera movement was great along with the music selection. One feels as though one has stepped into the past for a visit, not just to old music but to old technology and an old pace of life that is lacking in this impatient world.
dude. you rule. have watched several of your videos. incredible !! I am north of 40 years old. Have been playing most of my life. Feel like an amateur watching you . You technique is clean and efficient. much respect from here to you sir!!
There are a lot of guitar-version of this song in the net, but for me this is the best one. Every time I want to listen this song, I always listen a lot of versions, but at the end I have to listen this version, because it is very, very good. Congratulations Lucarelli.
I absolutely love Michael Lucarelli's rendition of this classical song. I have purchased all of his music that is available on iTunes. I listen to his misuc every day as I meditate. What a great musician.

You mean the FIRST movement of the sonata alone.
Fantastic, although watching you play thru the screen of a nineteen fifties television seems odd ;-)
Everything is there: soul, heart, talent, skill and good taste.

Delightful performance, destroyed by the distracting over done video effects, shame it was not up to the same standard as the musicianship.
