No happy ending here. This song is about a white guy who fell in love with a black girl, and they were rejected by both of their families. The original version was by Hot Chocolate, and it's much darker. Stories cheered it up a bit. This was from the summer of 1973.

The Midnight Special was a cool late-night weekend music show in the early/mid 70s [I think it was on NBC before they invented Saturday Night Live, if I recall correctly]. So I believe this was like 1971. It's protest music, in a sense, but really just a tale of interracial love.

How social norms change. Mixed couples were taboo back when this song was recorded, not so much today. I was a teenager when this song began getting a lot of air play and I viewed it as a rather rebellious song at the time. Today, comparitively speaking, race relations have improved dramatically......... but we still have a long way to go.Always enjoy your reactions, TY.

    • @bobbierobinson6269

It may have been taboo in some places, but in many it was the norm. The 70's were very open about most relationships in the bigger cities and smaller towns were opening up.
I'm not saying it wasn't a lot of racism, but it had started getting better except with die-hard groups. It's sad that any is still left.

I've discovered by watching reaction channels, a fair number of UK hits that in the 1970s were covered by US bands and made a bit more US-sounding for the US market. I'm guessing they were worried about the controversy it would cause by having an offensive word towards a Black person and a White person. But considering the original band was made up of Black and White musicians, who wrote and sang it, it works in the original song! But always when they sanitize the song, they lose something. This is not a match for the original.

Those were exciting times . . . we had had the Freedom marches, seen desegregation ended, then the Summer of Love, Woodstock, and all the cultures were exploring each other. White kids running around sporting arrow (perms) and dashikis, black kids wearing look overalls and granny glasses, and everybody wearing fringe, beads, and braids! It was 1971, I believe, when interracial marriage was finally legal in all states, which did 2 things: it told the younger generation that, yes, you can do that, and told the older generation that the kids wouldn't t just be fooling around with someone of a different race, but that the kids could actually marry someone of a different race! There were Louie stories happening all over the place.

I will tell you a story in the 70s it was ruff bringing home someone who was not your own color.
I brought home a black guy in the 70s I am white, my mother kicked him out of the house. To her disapproval I married that guy and had two beautiful children that she told me I should not have because they would be mixed. We are not married today but I never regret what I did and we are still friends.
In the end though she did come around and grew to like him.
We are all the same and some of us were brave enough to go beyond and teach some that color doesn't decided what kind of a person someone is we are all human. That is what this song is about to me.

The reason this version is confusing is that they had to change the lyric for the show.
    The 3rd verse is :
    "There he stood...in the night,
knowing what's wrong from what's right.
When he took her home to meet his Mamma and Poppa,... MAN THEY HAD A TERRIBLE FIGHT".
Apparently the bit about a fight was too much for the show or network.

They cut a part out that says , He took her home to meet his mama and papa now they had a terrible fight . As long as people hide racism and not face it head on like we did in the 70s with TV shows like All In The Family with Archie Bunker ( white ) and George Jefferson ( black ) We will never rise above .

There's another very famous disco song called Brother Louie (ua-cam.com/video/Lp2qcCrdBLA/v-deo.html) by Modern Talking. Both are great

one of the things i absolutely love about the music of my youth, was the songs that were social messages.. this song is about an interracial couple and the bullshit they had to put up with.. i hated racism as a kid (i was born in 1959)... and it absolutely disappoints me, and even sickens me, that racism not only still exists, it is flourishing in current US culture...!!!!!!

Live the singer reminds me of Steve Marriott. Great version.
