Either you're all a bunch or trolls or you truly do not have the ability to see beauty and talent in simplicity. He was probably the first person on film to do what he did in this scene. I can easily picture myself seeing this for the first time and smiling then as I did now.
This country has lost a comedian who is not replaceable. The most influential comedian who has ever lived. Accept it. THANK YOU Jerry for all the years of laughs and happiness.
I've watched this over and over and I don't think I'll ever get enough. His talent just amazes me. And it doesn't hurt at all that he's absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous and I really don't think he ever saw it.
it just goes to show folks don’t understand certain comedy..jerry lewis was one of the best at this type of comedy ..he’s having an imaginary conference in a boardroom with the guys at the top telling em out it would be if he was their boss and miming some actual words he would be saying to them .. and all to the backing of the amazing count basie’s jazz orchestra.. fantastic ..
Jerry Lewis is masterful in this scene but lets not for get the music.Count Basie was one of the best band leaders/composers ever. This song is incredible.
@jerrylewisthekid5479: Jerry Lewis had perfect timing. I mean PERFECT. There is a dance scene he did with Sheree North. I can’t remember what movie it is from but it is here on UA-cam. If you watch his feet - he doesn’t miss a beat. His timing is, once again, PERFECT !
The Movie is "Living It Up" with Dean Martin and Janet Leigh. Janet Leigh married Tony Curtis and Jerry Lewis was the Best Man. After she divorced Tony Curtis Dean Martin introduced her to her Stock Broker husband and Dean Martin was the best man at that wedding. She was married for 42 years to that man before she died at 77 years old. What a coincidental story.
We watched this in our jazz band this morning :) this is the most fantastic thing i've ever seen. and the Count Basie band... my God, they can swing hard.
All the comments here were written before he died. 20th of Aug. last year. All these comments prior to mine were made while he was still alive. I write this comment in reverence of his memory and all the laughs he gave us: even though Jerry was long before my time. Thanks for the laughs Jerry. I think I saw this on a Saturday afternoon tv matinee when I was very young. He definitely had a knack for amusing most of us.
He was simply the best whether you loved him or hated him and I loved him. Nobody before him had the talent he had and nobody since him could ever hope to compete.
Jerry Lewis is the king of comedy. He inspired Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, and millions of other comedians in the business today. If you are a parent, introduce your kids to Jerry Lewis' movies. They NEVER get old.
the sad part about Jerry Lewis and what gets lost in the translation is the fact that he is a brilliant guy and was a major talent. Had he not been such a prima donna and an egomaniac (and had he not treated most everyone around him like shit) throughout his career perhaps he would be viewed in a different light.
Damned right. Jim Carey was this generation's Lewis. That's not a compliment. The best thing Jerry ever did, aside from the money for the kids, was highlighting Basie. Then ruining it by DIRECTING Basie and his band with his studio band during a telethon in the 1970s. HIS studio band looked horrified.
Ace.....right on!! I introduced all 4 of my kids to Jerry's movies as they were growing up and they loved him. They STILL mimic some of his routines and behavior to this day when they get together (and it drives their mother NUTS)! ;-)
Ok, just exactly what is Jerry saying in the chorus? "And you and you and me we have to . . ." I love Jerry, not least for introducing me to Count Basie at a tender age!
This is such a great clip to show the musicality of humor is as important as the musicality of rhythm and music! Jerry Lewis had great musicality and rhytm and therefore his comic brilliance was even more brilliant!
Vielen Dank ! RIP, lieber Jerry !
Say wants you want about him off camera. It gets no better than this. As with all artists who are such a cut above the norm, when they produce, it's unequalled. Here's a prime example of his genius. He was famous by his 20th birthday. Instead of criticism, enjoy the gift of laughter he brings us. One of the last great living legends.
I’ve watched this and all of Jerry Lewis’ movies over and over for decades. I’ve watched this and the typewriter scene so many times that I know his every move and facial expression before he does it.
Love it! I had a silly grin on my face the whole time I was watching it. I came here because I saw and enjoyed the Peter Griffin (Family Guy) version and I wanted to see what the original version was like. My verdict: it's even better!
Man wasn’t he special?! How does he even do this? Genius is how he does it!! This man is effortlessly talented! This is our last great comedian, you better believe that. I’ll always love him so much.
As a young kid, I really enjoyed watching his movies. It started in the early 70s when one theatre was showing Jerry Lewis films and our dad would bring us with him to watch those movies and I started liking him since then. R.I.P
I'm 51 yrs old and I love this man's work, films, contributions, Jerry Lewis Tellathon, this man was and always will be to me a very funny individual with style, and class. This man can make me laugh and that's a rare thing. Great talent, Great man.
Guys, what do you expect, this is Jerry Lewis afterall, so of course it is hilarious to see him act without saying any word and instead he follows the instruments that are played, making this one of his best and most funniest scenes of all time.
He was a Genius.. Remember my Mother in law and me...once saw the movie The Nutty Professor on TV in her House at the countryside. Many years ago.. We laught almost the whole time. Often so loud that the Second teeth of my Mother in law fell out of her mouth...What a crazy funny time....
Jerry Lewis- Brilliant comic. Can't get enough of this clip. Jerry would have been a great jazz musician if he would have decided to go in that direction. His rendition of We got a world that swings in the movie, The Nutty Professor, not an easy song.
Brilliant! Jerry Lewis wrote and Directed this film. He was a swing lover and counted Bill Basie and Buddy Rich as friends. So for him to ask Bill to use this and pantomime the skit was a no brainer.
xlent.........love him or hate him...........he was talented, grew up watching him, loved ladies man an nutty proffesor just found this gem yesterday!!!
Nicely synchronised. It's a shame that (except for a few blockbusters) Hollywood lost interest in releasing films with stereophonic soundtracks between 1960 and 1977.
Playing this in my jazz band at school. As the piano player in it all, I just love this song. Great tempo, great beat, & overall, a great song. We play next week, along with "One O Clock Jump," "Malaguena," & "Perdido" alos great songs :)
I've always liked this...great stuff. It shows Jerry's creative genius. The Basie Band is top shelf, most of these guys played on "Sinatra Live at The Sands" a few years later.
I used to watch this movie on TV when I was a little girl and just WWWAAIIT for this part. Thanks for posting this great version, it's the cleanest and best one of this on UA-cam. Anything Jerry ever did was gold for me. And not one toilet joke or curseword anywhere.
@dubdaze68 - As mentioned in the video description above, this version as used in the movie is from the Count Basie "Chaiman Of The Board" album. The recording session was done in 1958. This scene uses just the last half of the song. Searching google for "Count Basie" + "Chairman Of The Board" will give you many ways to buy or download this exact song in stereo (which was new in '58). I replace mono versions with stereo HQ versions of various artists in a few of the videos on this channel.
So much talent here in America is taken for granted. I'm glad this wasn't the case for Jerry Lewis in France. We always knew the French have great taste when it comes to culture and the arts. They weren't wrong here.
I did. As a kid, Jerry Lewis was our idol. The only way I can imagine that a crack addict feels is like the neighborhood kids and myself felt in anticipation of seeing a new Jerry Lewis movie at the theatre on a Saturday. 😂 It was all we could think about in anticipation of seeing it. One of our parents would drop us all off in the station wagon, when the first feature started in the afternoon, and we would re-watch it over and over until the last feature. 😁 Keep in mind - the entire time, we were consuming popcorn, Jujy Fruits, (I used to like to put Jujy Fruits on one side of my mouth and popcorn on the other. 😂 ) Then it was Ferrara Pan “Red Hots” (They still make them and I don’t think the box has changed), Ferrara Pan “Jaw Breakers” (That box hadn’t changed either), Chocolate Babies, Milk Duds, Junior Mints, Bonomo Taffy and huge quantities of Coca Cola. Need I say how sick we all were on Sunday ? We were hung over from our drugs of choice: Jerry Lewis and all of that candy, popcorn and Coca Cola. I feel sick just thinking about it. 😵💫🤢
I wonder how many people on set, including the band, were fed the H up with Lewis by the time it was over. Count Basie he would leave alone, anyone important had protection from Lewis, but he was a really nasty piece of work, and most people who worked with him hated him.
Awesome totally understand why and How he was so amazing. God bless your soul we need more people like this nowadays but everybody's paid for in Hollywood there's no true talent at least not none I've seen
Nobody but Count Basie could have been the background music for this. One thing for sure -- Jerry Lewis had good taste and wanted nothing but the best.
@bachstradtrumpet Basie always won those "Battle Of The Bands" with Ellington, etc. He & his guys were always the best. They called that tempo "in the pocket". Recorded in NY. The acoustics of a big room, & everybody playing off each other lead to far greater recordings & quality compared to the overproduced recordings done today - many times with different parts being done at different times & places. There's a lot of late 50's early 60's stereo recordings that are amazing in pop, r&b & jazz.
Pretty much every one of Lewis' films had one scene of genius in it, like this one, a flawless two minutes on screen. And then there was the rest of the movie. Sometimes good, like _The Nutty Professor_ in which he transforms back and forth from the ultimate Jerry Lewis nerd to a character akin to Dean Martin"s cool cat persona. Sometimes not so good. Martin and Lewis on the _Colgate Comedy Hour_ were stupendous. The combination could not be duplicated. Allen and Rossi tried, shortly after the Martin/Lewis break-up, but never quite made it. I don't think either of them pulled off the complexity and depth of character that both Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis achieved. It gave Martin and Lewis authenticity. They were, after all, actors, not just stand-up comics. (To Marty Allen's credit, he became a full-fledged actor on his own later in his 95-year life.)
Watch Pulp Fiction. I've always gotten the impression that John Travolta's character was based on Jerry's portrayal of Buddy Love. I've seen PF about 5 times and then watched TNP and thought that.
A long time staple Basie big band chart, composed by tenor saxophonist Frank Foster, (the "Hoss'" in the title "Blues in Hoss Flat"), and arranged by the incomparable Sammy Nestico. Been played by high school and college jazz bands since the 60s. This part is just the vamp to the ending of the chart. The entire chart is worth a listen here on UA-cam.
@TbirdsOf1965 Stereo recordings made before the commercial availability of stereo RECORDS are largely incredibly well recorded; engineers and A&R people really strove for the richness of dimensionality when these records were taped but then released on mono records. When stereo records became a reality, the record buying public couldn't appreciate the subtly of the soundstage expansion; they wanted the dual-mono "ping-pong" sound of individual voices from each speaker only.
I remember my music teacher in my high school band talking about how amazing the band can articulate the each other to make it sound like he's talking. And the mute on the trumpet sounds so good when he fake laughs
This Count Basie classic BLUES IN HOSS' FLAT from the classic LP, CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD (Roulette "Birdland Series" R/SR-52032, written by Count Basie and the late tenor sax genius, Frank Foster. Arrangement by the latter. I have this classic gem in both monaural and stereo, in mint condition!
A brilliant and incredibly talented man.
Either you're all a bunch or trolls or you truly do not have the ability to see beauty and talent in simplicity. He was probably the first person on film to do what he did in this scene. I can easily picture myself seeing this for the first time and smiling then as I did now.

Makes me smile every time i see this. Lewis was comedy gold.
Jerry Lewis is masterful in this scene but lets not for get the music.Count Basie was one of the best band leaders/composers ever. This song is incredible.
Basie was indeed one of the best bandleaders ever, but he did not write or arranged that song. Frank Foster did.
The Basie tune Lewis pantomimed for "Cinderfella" was great, too, but that movie sucked except for the scenes with Basie's music.
Buddy Rich used to say when he played with Basie and his band (only in short engagements) ,"It was like eating a great meal."
Yes 👍🏼
Tune is called "Blues in Hoss Flat."
This is crazy. The music seems to come straight out of his mouth. He was a genius !!

Basie and Lewis = CLASSIC STUFF...BEYOND GENIUS! Case Closed
Excellent comedic bit here brilliantly performed by a true comedic genius named Jerry Lewis.
@pushon2342: Everybody has their issues. He was my childhood idol and a genius. I’ll love him until the day I die. and beyond that if possible. : )
Awww me too. I loved Jerry so much. My hero.
Such a perfectionist. People found him difficult to work with because of this, but ohhhh what a final product.
Jerry Lewis was....just special! Simple.
I’ve watched this and all of Jerry Lewis’ movies over and over for decades. I’ve watched this and the typewriter scene so many times that I know his every move and facial expression before he does it.
Now that is time wasted.
He was INCREDIBLE!!!
A genius is gone to pose an additional star in our sky
Rest in peace Jerry. You will be missed. Don't stop making them smile with Dino!
Rest in Peace, Jerry Lewis (1926 - 2017) Your comic genius will be missed...
Love it! I had a silly grin on my face the whole time I was watching it.
I came here because I saw and enjoyed the Peter Griffin (Family Guy) version and I wanted to see what the original version was like. My verdict: it's even better!
Jerry loved music. He used it well in his films.
A a masterpiece in music and a masterpiece in acting! Fantastic!
I love the musical interlude from 00:00 to about 00:21. Magnificent.
Twas the most unique part of it. Was perfect for this scene and can't be found on any other recorded version.
Same here. I love it !
Song is Blues in Hoss Flat by the Count Basie Orchestra.
I keep coming back to this for that very cool Basie sound.
The greatest comedian that ever lived.

It was routines like this that help set him aside from everyone else. As a child I loved Jerry Lewis.
Totally loved/Jerry Lewis
Guys, what do you expect, this is Jerry Lewis afterall, so of course it is hilarious to see him act without saying any word and instead he follows the instruments that are played, making this one of his best and most funniest scenes of all time.

Torill: That’s hilarious 😂
Jerry Lewis- Brilliant comic.
Can't get enough of this clip.
Jerry would have been a great
jazz musician if he would have
decided to go in that direction.
His rendition of We got a world
that swings in the movie, The
Nutty Professor, not an easy song.
He was such a multitalented artist! A genius!
Brilliant! Jerry Lewis wrote and Directed this film. He was a swing lover and counted Bill Basie and Buddy Rich as friends. So for him to ask Bill to use this and pantomime the skit was a no brainer.
What timing. Jerry started singing at age 6 with his parents in the Catskills, so that's where that rhythmic precision comes from.
Okay, i've never a 'Jerry Lewis comedy fanatic'; but THIS...is uniquely fabulous!*
i am ashamed to admit i didn't really know the comic geniality of jerry lewis until now
one of my favourite Jerry Lewis gems but luckily one of so many and spot on synchronisation with big band as Jerry gives his audience a dressing down
The greatest thing Jerry ever did. Genius!
Jerry never ceased to pay homage to the Count. Incredible!
xlent.........love him or hate him...........he was talented, grew up watching him, loved ladies man an nutty proffesor just found this gem yesterday!!!
As many things as Jerry Lewis (may he live to be 100) will be remembered for, THIS little gem may be his enduring masterpiece.

JERRY LEWIS - COUNT BASIE-BOSS PANTOMIME
Une telle performance visuelle exige une oreille musicale et plus encore.
I've always liked this...great stuff. It shows Jerry's creative genius. The Basie Band is top shelf, most of these guys played on "Sinatra Live at The Sands" a few years later.
Someone I have ALWAYS wanted to meet.
I used to watch this movie on TV when I was a little girl and just WWWAAIIT for this part. Thanks for posting this great version, it's the cleanest and best one of this on UA-cam. Anything Jerry ever did was gold for me. And not one toilet joke or curseword anywhere.
He absolutely would never allow anything off color. NEVER. He wanted his movies to be pure for the kids.
HILARIOUS. NEVER GET TIRED OF SEEING THIS.

CB was a great musician. This piece is wonderful. Right up there with The Theme from Route 66 by Nelson Riddle, and Peter Gunn by Henry Mancini.
The Count Basie Orchestra is the real star here.
They also were in all the Frank Sinatra songs they propped up.
For more than 50 years, I wanted to know the title of this song. Thank you.
Blues in Hoss’ Flat

Monsieur Jerry Lewis, un artiste prodigieux, exceptionnel et intemporel ❤️
So much talent here in America is taken for granted. I'm glad this wasn't the case for Jerry Lewis in France. We always knew the French have great taste when it comes to culture and the arts. They weren't wrong here.
Same for people such as Mickey Baker. France really knew his greatness, compared to who america thought was "great".
Ein schöner Mann mit wunderschönen Händen - schon als junges Mädchen habe ich für Jerry Lewis geschwärmt...
Imagined how funny this must have been sitting in the movie theater and seeing it for the first time.
My absolute fav in cinematic history!
Comedy at it's very best. I remember watching this when I was 8 years old. Great stuff!!!
Not at all a fan of jerry lewis but this is BRILLIANT. Pity the guy wasn't born in the era of slient movies. He could have given buster keaton a run.
They were about as different as can be. Lewis was the master of mugging, and Keaton was the Great Stone Face and never moved his face at all.
I wonder how many people on set, including the band, were fed the H up with Lewis by the time it was over.

scene bien connue du Zinzin d'Hollywood de Jerry Lewis, mais quelle classe !
