      At the time where I lived it was the only all night show just at that time of year. I watched this on KFSN TV Fresno which carried the MDA telethon from 1971 to 1977 and moved to KMJ TV 24 ( later became KSEE in 1981) from 1978 to 1993 then to KMPH FOX 26 from 1994 to its end in 2010. We would stay up and watch the stars come out.

    It's 2024 and Count Basie's Orchestra first performed this song when I was a year old. About 20 years later, I became a Count Basie fan when he and a condensed version of his orchestra appeared in the opening scene of Blazing Saddles about three years before this telethon aired in '77. Jerry's conducting and comedic dance interpretation of the song are classic Lewis. Basie's 'one mo' time' went an extra two more times in order for producers to cut to the tally board when the new total of money pledged was ready for Jerry to announce.

    I wonder who had more fun doing this - Jerry or the band! Watching Butch Miles on drums reacting to Jerry or vice versa is definitely what’s driving this performance along! Aah - The good old days of music and entertainment with real professionals!

    • @kenprice1961
      @kenprice1961 Рік тому

      "He" is NOT "directing" this orchestra. The musicians are professionals and don't need lewis swinging his arms around. They are just ignoring him.

  • @gnirolnamlerf593

    The inimitable Count Basie Orchestra and a really creative arrangement of "April in Paris". By the way, a very subdued and bittersweet performance was done by Dinah Shore, accompanied by André Previn on piano. Great song.

    • @kenprice1961
      @kenprice1961 Рік тому +1

      Too bad lewis didn't know how to "conduct" an orchestra. But since the musicians were total pros, they didn't need him up there swinging his arms around.

Bob was the musical director for the JL telethon for a couple of years when he worked in Las Vegas. This is JL and just one of many amazing music/dance/humor pieces you can find on You Tube. As a kid - my neighborhood friends and I LOVED Jerry Lewis. We’d have a sleepover at one of the kids houses for the telethon. - could stay outside playing ball, or hide and seek until about 10:00pm. Parents let us stay up all night and gorging on great food. We’d have the TV on, played Monopoly and other board games, made brownies, overate and recuperated on Sunday. We had so much fun.

May I ask you - bass player I thought may have been John Heard, but then I saw him again and he actually looked like aaron Bell - is that possible? And was that Jimmy Forrest in the saxophones? Finally, and, once more - if I may, who is the fantastic high note trumpet screamer? I can't see the section. Thank you!!! WHAT A BAND!!!!!!!!!!!
