This is a good thing. First, Ronson issued the challenge, meaning that he wanted, or at least started, the 'war'. He summoned the father. Now while he said repeatedly that he didnt want to fight the boy, it, as unfortunately as it is, the rules of the duel. The duel that Ronson started and thus agreed to. Second, sure the priest denied Ronson quitting, but again, the rules of the duel were clear. Now Ronson had the option to forfeit once the duel actually started. This may have meant that he would die to the magic, but Ronson himself said he has never forfeit duels before. So either way, regardless of whether he would die or not, Ronson made the choice of choosing his pride and title over the life of the boy. Third, he kills the priest. Sure the priest could have just not sent the boy, but perhaps the priest would have been hurt for ignoring the magic of the duel. Nothing that I noticed suggested that the priest wanted the boy to die or the people lose. After all, the priest was following the rules. The rules of the duel that Ronson issued and refused to forfeit. Forth, Ronson blames the gods for his murder. He is a selfish fool whose his pride,title, and greed over the life of a boy and then blames others.

From how he acted and carried himself, he seemed like a man that cares for the people as well. Do you think that a 13 year old boy is going to be capable if governing those huge swaths of lands? You think the Duke's death is going to improve their situation now that their competent ruler is dead? When you are good ruler, your life doesn't belong to yourself, it belongs to the people you are protecting. You are actually putting a single life ahead of that of thousands, if not tens of thousands of people.
