  • The quality of the jobs we do matter to our well-being. On average, a person from an OECD country spends 37 hours a week at work, and an increasingly larger share of their adult lives in paid-work. Quality jobs are an important driver of increased labour force participation, productivity and economic performance. The OECD has developed comparable measures of job quality by looking at the individual experience of people at work.

Having a job matters a lot for a well-being, but the quality of that job also have a major impact on our lives. Good quality jobs help people develop their skills, fulfill their ambitions, and make them feel useful in society. People who hold quality jobs are generally healthier and more productive which contribute to a firm’s performance. The OECD has developed comarable measures of quality by looking at the individual experience of people at work. These measures focus on actual outcomes for workers in three broad areas. Earning quality, how does employment contribute to material living standards. Labor market security, how high is the risk of becoming unemployed, what are the economic consequences of being laid off. Working environment, how much pressure does work envolve, how much control do people have over the tasks the performe. Working time arra, work place relationships, opportunities for learning , work life balance, are all important dimensions of the quality of the work environment. Measured in this way, job qualities varies wildly across countries. Denmark, Finland, and Germanyare among the countries that genehave the highest job’s quality. Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Poland, are among those that have low job’s quality. Big differences also exist across group of workers. Youths and the un-skilled tend to have low quality jobs; men tend to be paid more than women, while women generally enjoy a better quality of work environment. The prospect of being able to move to a better position in the future is another important aspect of job’s quality. Being stuck in a low quality job in the early part of a career affects the long term prospects in terms of earnings and working conditions. The OECD finds that improving job quality does not mean low a job quantity and countries can both combine high employment levels with good quality jobs. This is why the leaders of G20 countries have committed to create not just more jobs, but better jobs.

They won't succeed with the current paradigm of ever expanding markets and always seeking quarterly increases.
