    Just some FYI about radios.
Always have an antenna or a dummy load on the unit before you power it up.
A good antenna can make a fair unit much better.
CB radios will have a max output of 4-5watts. If you want more power and usability , you can study for a ham license,
It's more expensive then CB, but you can communicate much much further. Again, it's regulated by FCC. In the long run it's worth it from a Preppers point of view. I got my Tech license in May, 2024. Still learning the ropes. The test is just the start. Practice, Practice, Practice. The same way to get to Carnegie Hall,
or get a GMSR radio. Yes, your need a license, No Test, Yes Issued by FCC. The max power of a GMRS radio is 50watts.
Whatever you choose, Always try to get the best antenna you can for starters.
    Caution:
If we are attacked by an EMP, most radios will be effected, because they are designed to pickup emf ( electro magnetic Freq). So keep that in mind. Having a backup in a Faraday cage, might be something to think about..
If looking for inexpensive equipment check out Facebook Marketplace for deals. You never know what you will find there...
    Just my 2 cents
    Good luck

Do Not Worry about the "HAM" license. The FCC doesn't prosecute, but you WILL get harassed by HAM "fox hunters" who get a sensual pleasure out of tracking you down.

If the repeater has a battery backup with solar, it may still work for a while, then intermittently with the solar charging variables and depending on traffic. But generally, he is right. You will need to invest in HF equipment in every location you want to talk to, or at least SW listening radios in the receiving locations. It does require considerable knowledge on both ends and peripheral equipment like power and antennas to be at all reliable. You're likely going to be getting mostly strangers wanting to bend your ear 😂

When i was preping for sailing the world solo i looked into comms. Sat fones way too expensive was gonna cost several hundred for the device plus a monthly charge and charged by the minit. Then looked into ham radio and decided i could aford that with a buy once cry once mentality. Found that one can use ham radio where only other thing was sat fone. So 5 years ago i got my ham ticket. Lost the boat but im having fun on hf and know i can do local to many thousands miles away. My third contact on hf was over 6000 miles into japan using 50 watts with a strong clear signal. I also keep cb and soon will be on Gmrs. I beleive ham radio is the way to go.

Steve I'm a truck driver I've been heavy into CB radio a long time You You have to have an antenna if you turn on ACB and try to transmit without an antenna hooked up to it the standing wave ratio will be too great and you will burn out the finals in the back of your radio and you will have to take it to a repair shop and get it fixed You must have an antenna and then balance your SWR

Better to encourage people to get a ham radio license. That way they can now more about the basic understanding of the capabilities of the radio they might be interested in getting. Besides that, they can start using their equipment and make improvements such as better antennas, batteries, and learn what the range would be in their particular environment. Not fond of your idea of relying on repeaters when stuff hits the fan. In a day or two repeaters will stop working. For those not interested in transmitting, a handheld scanner might be a better option for them. Wide frequency coverage, extremely fast scanning.

For ham radio, use the unused simplex channels, keep coms short, change channels often. Basically, any channel between 445 and 447 mhz except 446.000 mhz should work.

    • @thebugg333
      @thebugg333 4 місяці тому +3

I have read people suggesting to program unused repeater input frequencies (HAM, GMRS) and keep it short with a PACE plan with your group to better obscure comms as one method outside of known coordinated simplex frequencies specific to your area. For the rest of new or inexperienced radio people reading this, the entire VHF or UHF band (sectioned off for amateur use) is open for grabs for people who have the correct license. There is no such thing as an unused "channel" when the frequency within the band is shared and is dependent on the local frequency coordinators and use case of your area...that is if you follow or are aware of it. Also, many radio preppers are inactive and monitor with many who watch the entire band on computers or cell phone making you obvious to the observer when you key up.

From what I have experienced, you need to provide an email address and/or a name in order to activate these phones or am i missing something?

Depending on what you want to accomplish...
Digital radios give out a very unique signal and the world knows you're there with a digital radio. Russia switched back to analog in Ukraine so any digital signal they encountered would be the enemy.
Burner phones don't really exist. If it comes anywhere near your in use phone and the cell tower it's using and from patterns of life they will be connected.
You're better off with a tablet without cell capability and use public wifi and messaging apps. Even then the more popular apps will give you up if questioned or have backdoors

When most peppers use UV-5R's and don't know how to use DMR...you narrow the initial attack surface. Analog and digital modes on VHF and UHF share the same issue...line sight means those who are close enough can try to isolate your location...unlike some directed HF radios. As for cell phones, GPS or towers are not needed to get your exact location anymore.

I havnt seen solar heaters only solar generaters to run electric heaters. You would need a good sized generator as electric heaters use alot of power. probably get a propane heater, even rv heaters are propane. If that helps any.

The buddy heaters are great BUT if using with a hose & larger tank PUT THOSE OUTSIDE through a cracked window!!!!! Get a carbon monoxide detector too.

Samsung Galaxy S24 or newer models also have this. To get the emergency use and later satellite text service you will have to purchase one of those models.

I have a euroipean President MCkinley and it is in export mode. So it outputs 20 watts on FM / AM and SSB> Also Steve the MCKINLEY FCC you were holding has no cooling fans on the back! My european MCKINLEY has cooling fans on the back! @Poplar Prepper My european President MCKINLEY in export mode is not FCC approved! So people in the united states do NOT get a european export mode President MCKINLEY and don't get in trouble with the FFC law!

This is not a good video, nothing cheap about a $500 cell phone. Best bet for uniminity is not CB or any voice comm, forget DMR, it relies on the internet. Best comms are portable low power, directed RF digital text in short bursts. You can integrate time, mode or frequency hopping easily with a schedule.
