There seems to be a very clear inverse correlation between how much someone complains about this video and how good the quality of their own filmmaking is on their own uploads. Anyone who's ever actually made anything creative or educational would know this is actually a really well put together, entertaining video aimed at educating a lot of newcomers with good information. The effort put in to make this is really commendable, do please keep up this kind of video Cinema5D and Seb, there's lots of good feedback here too from people who aren't weird! Keep up the good work!
Forgot to mention - loved your graphics (black letters, red circle, white background), music and the English accent. Isn't it amazing that being English such a wonderful language, so many times it's non-native speakers that bring out the best enunciation of it and add transformative and subtle hints of charm and delicacy to it? ;)
"Avoid LED lights with barndoors, because that is unprofessional." So my ARRI Skypanel S60 becomes unprofessional if I buy the dedicated barndors? Seb, that's BS - sorry! Otherwise - nice video (your twin is great fun)
Hi Konstantin, I see how it came across like that :( I was referring to LED panels without the soft surface. Those LEDs with hundreds of individual light points were coming to the market by countless manufacturers and some of them added barndoors which created multi-shadows in videos and no professional would touch those. I failed to mention that in my video. I was shooting this from 2-4am at night and was under a lot of pressure, but it's still a shame I didn't get this part right.
cinema5D That makes a lot more sense, but is easily/partially solved by slapping a sheet of diffusion directly on the light (always remember to cut in front of the diffusion, whether you’re using barndoors or flags). Also the doors are a convenient place to clip color correction gels if necessary (like CTB or CTO). Barn doors also control outside-of-frame spill, which can sometimes be a problem. Speaking of flags, maybe the 8th or 10th accessory should be a c-stand (and a set of nets and flags if you can afford it). If you can’t afford the nets and flags, make-shift ones can be made from cardboard painted black or window screen material. If you want to be a real lighting badass, design your own cucaloris (“cookie”) to create foliage shadows.
Oh man, thank you sooooo much for saying that, I know sooooo many people that shoot on RED and saying „the best camera is the one you have with you“ ! I know it‘s kinda true but if you wanna really take filmmaking as a cool hobby you should reaaallllyyyy buy at least a cheap dslm or dslr, cause you can change lenses and the sensor is way bigger, so thank you soooo much, you‘re the first person speaking that out loud👍 You‘re my favorite youtuber right now
I was looking for a video on the basic gear for film-making and of course the UA-cam algorithm and your really good SEO threw this at me. I've made myself log into my UA-cam account to give you a really well-deserved thumbs up and to subscribe to the channel. I'm not even a newbie in film-making, I'm just a guy who's curious about so many things that I spend a lot of time browsing UA-cam to learn about lots of stuff from people that know their stuff and have a talent to transmit knowledge in an appealing, non-pedantic, non-self-pompous way and you guys are just absolutely great. If there was an Oscars award for UA-cam videos I'd nominate you right now. You are clever, funny, smart, simple yet accurate, creative yet not flashy, and above all you have a great talent for story-telling. I've just spent 13m mostly looking at a guy reciting a text in a way that was enticing and seducing enough to keep me watching it through the end because of what was being said and the way it was said. I was laughing, smiling and enjoying the logical, visual demonstration of what you were saying with minimum distractions of visual or audio stunts apart from the comic-relief moments of your nerdy, goofy twin brother. Above all, I'm so glad to see that are people out there creating contents like this, which is tremendously refreshing and invigorating because in a non-pretentious way and with a simple script - explaining the basic technical gear without shying away from the subject matter and escaping the tyranny of portraying yourself as very sophisticated and in control with mediocre verbal excess - you have completely done away with all the unbearable clichés of UA-cam - especially the obnoxious, permanent shouting and the mediocre visual and audio stunts and exaggerations that are the norm in so many UA-cam channels. Above all, in this video you have showed a great respect towards your potential audiences by enacting a great respect for yourselves as creators. And that, gentlemen, means two things: CLASS and DIGNITY. Great work, I'm gonna share your vids with a couple of friends that are into video-blogging. They should learn from guys like you. Keep it up and best of lucks to the channel. :)
I had no idea that you could be funny. I really liked the presentation. Proof is that I knew 90% of it, but your creative approach held my interest all the way through. Thanks!
Funny, extremely informational and entertaining.. made it easy to understand the film making. other guy was crazy. Audio part was hitting. couldn’t take my eyes off this video, well made..
We do use led panels with barndoors professionally in film industry. But usually the led panels are a lot more expencive than the China ones. E.g. Arri skypanels. But of course depends on the sitsuation. I prefer the honeycomb myself tho.
Hello ..... Want a suggestion from U.... I jst started making travelling videos nd bought sony a6400 with 18-135 lens.... So should I buy sigma 16 mm f1.4 ... Or should I get a action camera .. what should I buy first MY BUDGET IS TIGHT so I can only buy any one for now
Great video! We also can use cellphones. It all depends of what kind of film (Blair Witch) and budget. There are a lot of people that shouldn't think that just because they can't afford a dslr they cannot make movies. Awesome way to show the importance of audio!
LOLOL OMG this is video is amazing! I never knew you guys could put out something like this. MaAAAAN epiiC charecters. I laughed pretty loud a few times watching this. What happened to you guys, all of a sudden out of no where you became something very rare here in youtube. Gawd that noob looked totally real( his tone look and actions were funny as hell) and his arguments were spot on with what I hear noobs say. totally awesome! Thank you for this.
got a question about autofocus, since i cannot afford the 6d ii (for double-pixle autofocus), i have a canon 5d ii, but how should i work on correct (auto)focus? since the 5d ii has no video-autofocus (for people/weddings). Shall i work hard on "followfocus" + extra monitor? or switching to, like canon 70D or some newer body? Beside... will i have to buy new lenses to be able to video-AF, or is it possible with new Bodys with every lens (like my tamron 24-70 2.8 or canon 50mm 1.4). I struggle pretty much on Video-Focus. People love the gimbal-videos (with running around) but makes a lot more difficult for nailing focus.
Very cool video, thank you for sharing, valuable information through experience. I use a Fuji Xt-2 as my main video camera (I know its strange!), but I love this camera even with no stabilisation. Could you please tell me any good choice on a second camera, for a parallel shooting or as a back up. I would prefer a video camera, so as to have it somewhere and forget about it (in a parallel shoot), or use it in case something happens to my main. I was thinking of the Sony AX33, which is very affordable for a 4K camera and with a very good stabilisation (if needed). Could you please give me any recommendations? Thank you very much for your time.
Hi Seb, I am an aspiring filmmaker (independent) and on the way to shoot my first film. I have viewed many of your videos and they are incredibly helpful. I need to buy a suitable camera and I want to shoot it in 35 mm. When checking my options I noted the Nikon D850 Filmmaker's kit. It provides 3 lenses but I am not yet sure if this will be the best option for me. I wanted to weigh your opinion before making the final decision. I would deeply appreciate your help. Kind regards Bhaskar Roy
Hahahaha this was awesome. If anyone thinks any of this is "nonsense," then the sarcastic-humor bits are lost on them, and I don't know what to tell them. Every single fact laid out is correct, and any opinionated parts are very, very sensible indeed. It'd be misleading to say that this video is nothing more than moderately humorous, factual, and wise.
Hey Christian, The main reason is that it is lacking some of the ergonomic features of other documentary style cinema cameras, like built-in ND filters, a screen that is bright enough in daylight and a handle and evf setup that is easy to collapse. The URSA Mini is a bit bulky/heavy and when setup and rigged it works very well for me, but as a tool to move around it lacks the ergonomics. Hope that makes sense. The URSA Mini Pro is a bit better with its built-in ND, but the EVF attachment is still not ideal. It’s simply not a camera you throw in a bag and go, it’s more a brick that shoots very cool stuff. If you want to make it work as an indie filmmaker, you can definitely make it work and adapt to its shortcomings.
Makes Sense. I actually own the Ursa Mini Pro. I love the image quality that I am getting from it; however I too have felt that it's not the ideal ergonomic set up. It's a nightmare to balance on a ronin, and overall it's just too heavy for efficiency. Definitely much better for narrative work than "get out and get the shot" type of work.
I loved this video! I have a new channel and I want to get better. This video was awesome and I want to see you cross over the 100k subs. Thanks so much!!! Your new sub. Thom

Barndoors don't work for jack on panel lights like the S60.
This was wonderful to watch. I left happy (from laughter) and at ease that I"m on the right track with my essential pieces. Thank you

you're so good at this, thanks helped a lot

You have a Vignette on this screen. I think that is deliberate.
You are such a character, liked and subbed!
:-) Sehr lustiges und unterhaltsames Video. Toll gemacht! Und die Info ist auch gut!
Danke für deinen Kommentar Iago!

The best zoom is walking forward or backwards
You're not zooming though. You changing the entire composition.

How did you make the blue light in the back? Did you just use a light and put a blue „filter thing“ (u know what i mean) on it?
or does your light change color temperature?
Subbed! Great video!
Thanks
Really good video for audio would you recommend the rode mic me for vlogging
why sony a7c dosent have zoom lenses i cant underestand this
I love my Pentax. Unfortunately, the video feature is 'automatic' thus I have no control of lighting. Or do I? Any suggestions?
Thanks it was so nice
I am new to the whole filming thing but is a ND filter as necessary as he says it is?
Yes! yes it is. It is a relatively simple investment that will stop you compromising with every shot beteewn 7am and 7pm.
Very entertaining.
7:51 My headphones were messing up during the beginning of the video , I thought they finally died on me. THANK GOD they didnt lol
This video was really good

Curious. Why don't you use the Ursa Mini outdoors?

I agree. Had it on a Ronin MX once (on a drone) and that was on the limit. Too big and too heavy.
I sold ursa mini pro for the c200. It was just too heavy for my purposes.
