White actor voices "black" character, would have never made the top 10 problems with this film.
@@discos-and-rodeos Oh don't get me started. First, and most prominently, it's the old "turn the black people into animals" trope. It was very prevalent for a long time that black characters couldn't just exist in film and cartoons, they had to be modified, so the very idea that them adapting a story of a frog turning into a human, got reimagined as a movie where the mainly black cast spends almost the sum of the movie as animals...was a huge insult to a lot of black people. (My mom especially was livid when we left the theater, thinking they'd finally made a black princess.) Secondly, they made voodoo evil. It's a religion and if they actually researched it, it's not evil or demonic just because it's a black folk religion. It's really insulting. Especially since they claimed to research Louisiana so well for the film. 3rd- They decided to make it a black film with black royalty, but never once showed a black country. His literal moment of change and triumph is showing his parents he can cut his own food. If it's not satire, it's a slur. 5- The plot ONLY takes place because of racism. Tina has the money for her restaurant, but is rejected cause "her kind can't". The solution then, was to bring a prince and a crocodile to solve it later. This is insulting. She never solves her own problem, those men never admit guilt, she doesn't actually beat her own villian, just makes threats do it for her. This doesn't create a story of triumph for young kids, it shows them, well if you don't threaten people, they won't given you what you earned. No other disney plot, does this. And for a threat to be the solution to a black story, is...very insulting. 6- The marriage isn't of two people who love each other, but of two people forced to commit as the only two talking frogs in existence. That's unfortunately the biggest resolution in the film, and it's done out of limited options. This messaging pervades in the whole film. That Tina only wins by submitting. She gives up on being a human, and by accepting her fate as a frog, she finally gets the right to be human again. All other disney films make it clear that a person's character elevates them to triumph. Aladdin is clever defeating Jafar. Mulan is wise and uses her "weakness" as strength to overcome the huns. Even historically inaccurate Pocohauntus saves the day with good faith and self-sacrifice in the face of doubt and fear and prejudice. How does Tina save the day? By giving up. Her entire story is about never giving up, to overcome. But she succeeds in the moment of submission to her fate. Her dream dies, her future fades away. She accepts frogness forever and marries a guy she did nothing but dislike the whole film, because it's better than being alone. She told every little black girl in the world to give up, to lower your standard, accept what you are, and realize other people are in power, not you. Only then can you have a happy ending. Cause everything magically corrected itself...only after she gave up. Why is that the message they chose for the black characters? Why? Any other story...would have been better.
