I highly recommend pressing the pages. As it is those pages are probably too rough for a pleasant writing experience using most pens. I use two panes of plexiglass I had left over from another project and 4 carpenters clamps to press my pages and it makes a huge difference. Paper is an incredible resource, more people should play around with it for sure!
At what point of the process do you press like this? When the paper has just been made from the pulp? When the signatures are already being assembled? (As you can see, I’m clueless on this front, but I’ve had homemade paper which was kind of awful to write on, so I’d love to learn more!)
@@21cormorants I’ve never made paper, but I do bookbind. I usually press my paper after putting them in signatures and after I’ve stitched and or glued them together. Maybe for homemade paper, pressing them before putting them in signatures would also help the texture?

that's sweet.. i have done the same but for me, the paper is not really good for writing on.. the ink bleeds or it's too bumpy..but it is pretty I only mention this to others because i keep trying things on youtube only to find missing steps. If you want the paper to be smooth you have to dry each new pulped page on glass or surface similar and to prevent bleeding ink..well you have to add stuff to the pulp water or spray ..nothing's really worked for me yet. good luck!
This is so bizarre tho? Have you tried liquid starch? Also, everything wet that need to dry flat has to be dried in a certain way. That's how wet and dry work. A regular book would also dry bumpy. Clothing dries bumpy.
I remember doing something similar when i was a kid! Every thing needed came from a crafting subscription box, and while the pages were normal paper the recycled paper method was used for the cover.
This just prooves that you don't need any expensive notebooks in order for you to have a good/aesthetic journal. Literally anything that reaches the requirement to make or buy a notebook can be good-looking & useable.
Try to write on that paper with a pen. With the first touch of ink there will be a huge blot of ink on paper. Recycling is great and more people would do it if it could create factory made quality
@yashsahu9324 yeah, you think people are stupid or smt? You realize this is the original right? This is the original paper and ink combo and you speak of bleeding ink? One adds to the mixture to prevent this obviously. Liquid starch for example. Presto chango. The solution to a problem from eons ago.
This is an extremely cute and economical idea, but you can't use any absorbent media on it. I have a massive handmade leather sketchbook that I can only use dry media on unless I whip out the gesso or watercolor ground.
You really think that if someone will need a journal he will do all those steps? And there is no need to buy expensive, there are so many nice notebooks that cost 10-15€

I remember we made paper for one of my birthday parties as a little kid once. Multiple colors and made a design out of the mushy stuff. They were "slightly" thicker than these :)
Is there a reason you choose to glue the folios to the spine rather than sew them in (aside from the fact that sewing them in is harder work, of course!). I’m just curious. Your book is beautiful just as it is!!
