Triumph Explorer 1200 first ride

- Triumph is making no bones about gunning for BMW's best-selling R1200GS - its new Explorer 1200 is aimed squarely at giving the BMW a bloody nose. And in every possible way, except for off-road ability and image, the Triumph is dynamically the better bike, and in some cases by a long way.

Test rode one today, one word, awesome.
I currently have a 2010 Street Triple R which I'm not selling, and I'm seriously considering adding this to the garage...
It is so easy to ride, it doesn't feel like a big heavy bike, I only passed my test last April and I was chucking it around. Great in the motorway, only problem is because it's so comfortable, you don't realise the speed your doing.
I took the Explorer out for a test today...having tested teh BMW 1200GS last week. They both have their merits...but I have now ordered an Explorer - it handles well, feels well planted on the road and inspires confidence. from 0-100 it's performance is not far my previous 955i Daytona. The gizmos are easy to operate (and cruise control? Awesome!) It's my first departure from Sports Bikes. The Explorer is absolutely incredible....I challenge anyone to test it and not love it - and it's British!!
Having ridden both recently. I can say the triumph is more exciting on the road. That triple engine is silky smooth. Off road with so much grunt and weight is a bit scary. The GS feels more off road like but is still excellent on road. I cant see the Triumph having the same re-sale value as the GS or lasting as long. I purchased the GS.
The Adventure model has a larger gas tank, different gearing, and more suspension travel, as well as some extra guards. Its not simply a GS with a bunch of bolt-on farkles added to it. They did get some things right - love the big alt! I think the Yamaha Super Tenere might be my next bike as it fits me better, but it still has a small tank.
I would do it . I traded in my 2011 Dyna Superglide for the new Suzuki v-strom 650 and have never regreted it . The Adventure bike is more fun to ride . I put twice the miles on my adventure bike in the first year than I put on my Dyna the first year I had it . My V-strom is so much lighter , faster , quicker , agile , sportier , and handles / performs better . I thought about the tiger 800 but after doing the homework I decided the 650 would complete my job and save me $2500 .
Very good review. I also agree: the Triumph Tiger is a great bike and beats BMW in most categories for this class of bike. It is also Triumph's first attempt. Wonderful job, Triumph; and great review MCN.
I test rode one this past weekend and only issue for me was how uncomfortable the seat was after only thirty minutes in the seat. No way I could ride this long distance. I know Triumph offers other seats so might need to try the comfort seat versus standard seat which was hard and uncomfortable. Love the stability of the bike, like the looks and like the standard features.
Still not sure it is a GS killer but it is a nice bike.
excellent review sirs
Be nice if the reviews covered the pillions opinions of the passenger seat and comfort.
sorry MCN but since you posted this the Triumph gremlins have shown up, such as over sensitive fly by wire throttle coupled with forks that feel like they are filled with concrete making smooth throttle hard work, or the crap brakes, the uncomfortable seat, the under damped and soft rear shocker that has it running wide out of corners and then the forks top out and clonk during power exits from corners because you had to back off the preload to get a decent ride.Ridden as a top heavy tourer with the missus on the back its fine but try push it and it ties itself in knots, the gs chassis and brakes are way in front,,,,,,however the later engines and transmissions Triumph are producing are sublime and addictive, shame we couldnt have a TriGS with the GS chassis and the Triumph engine and transmission!!
looks like a great bike, i will probably end up buying something like this when i'm in my 40s
Fantastic bike
1: Touratech Low profile Gas can, though, at a range of 250+ Miles its not exactly shabby.
2: Touratech Radiator Guard.
3: the GSA is GS with added toys. the Explorer 1200 is bound to have its Adventure model come out later on since it would simply be a normal Explorer with a few extra guards and what not. or you could just ad them on yourself. Hurp
Good initial general review.
The things I don't like about it are the 1) small fuel tank, 2) exposed radiator (right behind the front wheel), and the wheels themselves. So this may be a match for the GS, but not the GS Adventure, which makes up a significant percent of the big advtouring bike sales.
A very good review covering all the details. Thank you to Marc and Liam for putting this video together.
@ErKa44 yes, 1200, 1050 and 800. my guess they will phase out the 1050cc tiger.
Sounds like a winner. I'd love to try one, but I think I'd still buy the 800XC. Decent review MCN.
Riding position, ride quality and road holding, comfort, road presence, two up ability, tank range.
@snoopdoug Hi there,,lets not pretend that any bikes of this type are moto-crossers,they are for main roads and badly surfaced by-roads,thats what most people use their BMW's and other bikes for.The Triumph is aiming the bike for the majority ,who use their bikes for this type of riding. The Triumph has higher level of equipment than the BM and is quite a bit cheaper! Ride safe!

I'm a major BMW Fan, even own the logo wear and gear. But I am ordering one of these hands down. Its specs and standard features alone are far better than BMW's for less cash then a base model BMW. No more slow GS for me.
Thats my next bike as soon as funds permit (est 2017)
Before you part with your hard earned money that a long hard look at the issues Triumph have been experiencing with this bike. There are serious questions around the strength of the engine and a mate of mine bought one and it broke down after just 4 miles and the dealer took a month to sort it out.I have only owned Triumph's since I passed my test but due to the problems I experienced with the bikes and even worse the dealers I am now riding a Honda.
did you ever get it?
@aluisious yup agree.anyone doing off roading seriously would not take a gs1200 they weigh more than my mum. The Tiger1050 was amazing and then need to make a bike more road biased...stick it on 120/180 tyres..still good review.
no mention of off-road ability in video??? Surely this is a key feature of an "adventure" bike. Yes I did read the notes :-( pity, it sounded good until then. And yes - we do use our bikes offroad in Australia.
@hankgs Not really..is it? Explorer has a 3cyl,water and oil cooled twin cam triple, with fly by wire, traction and cruise control.Bmw flat twin air cooled,no fly by wire, traction or cruise control.Shaft drive is more substantial on the Triumph and is on the left, whereas the BMW's is smaller and on the right.Triumph is 30 bhp more power, has USD forks, not paralever like the BMW.triumph has heated seats,BMW not! and so on.. I suppose every bike is seen as a copy by the criteria you are using
God that thing's fast and I love that sound!
But if it doesn't have the off-road characteristics, why buy it?
@pulsarnitwit That argument has been used when comparing Land Rovers with virtually every 4x4 on the market. They're not nearly as good off-road, but they have enough to get bye with most people's needs and the road character being better is ultimately more important. All depends how hard core off-road you intend to be.
@BarryEssex Well what do you suppose the reason is for all the German.French,Dutch and American testers praising it as well??
@fredzz0rs If the first thing on your mind at 0:17 wasn't a BMW, you're either the designer of the bike or Stevie bloody Wonder.
I kind of agree. But I am glad it came out so when I trade my 955 Sprint in on a 1050 Tiger I have more pull LOL.
I weigh 170lbs....5' 10" . if I want to go off road I will get a Honda CRF 150 how about that.
As soon as the Tiger 1050 is paid off it's being traded in for this!!
@dfawfzx shouldn't that be 137/1.01 =135.12HP...but we know what you meant anyway.ride safe
Thats the thing - it looks EXACTLY like the GS minus the Patrick Moore headlamps of the GS, so whats the point?! At least KTM's 990 Adventure looks quite diff from the GS.
I'm considering trading my Harley for one of these...
I currently have a Harley Electra glide that I like and enjoy long trips on, but sometimes wish I had a bike like this. From my dirt bike riding background I like the idea of being able to go off road, over mountain passes, yet still have a comfortable bike for on the street. I just worry I'll miss my Harley :( I often ride my bike aggressively, scrapping the floor boards, yet I wouldn't trade it for a sport bike.... Should I trade?
I had the 1050 and was the most linear power band of any bike I've driven
I can only imagine the 1200 silky smooth triple
drive the GS 1200 into a lake. junk
Good bike, it's just too top-heavy. Kind of feels like a truck, where the GS feels very agile by comparison.
With only a 12hp disparity between them, the GS will usually beat the explorer on track because it handles much better.
Looks an ace bike but id still take an old R1150GS...
ATLEAST THE HEADLIGHTS ARE SYMETRICAL!
I would love to see how many GS's actually go OFF ROAD anyway.
I'll take that 1050 off your hands. I don't particularly care for it. I would be fine with my sprint 955i (configured like an RS) but I just love a little more upright position at 47.
i ride a supersport. why does he always use the front brake bore all corners ? mb go a gear down?
@aluisious have you owned a modern Triumph!?????
Where i can find this beatiful road?
Far cooler than the BMW, if I had the money I would have one :)
they better make a sublimer design of face glass
finally someone with some sense...
Looks alot better than a BMW :)
PLEEEEASE get some sort of wind protection for your mics. it will make the videos 100% more enjoyable. Good review marred by something really basic.
whats the difference between that, and a tiger ?
10,000 mile services? Great. Now just give me an 18 month service interval to go with it (Just talking generally here, not just about Triumph)! 10,000 miles and 1 year is fine for a 1 bike owner but if you have a couple of bikes for different applications the 1 yr interval gets to be a good drain on the wallet when added to road tax. Especially if I all I should NEED in a year is an oil change and the brakes checked but they will charge $300+ USD for this in most countries.
@mac163 but its the same concept?
@955nsim LOL! Yeah, it's SO totally different...whatever dude.
How can you say it is good as the GS with only a road test? The GS is off-road biased and thats why people buy it. Take them off road then tell us how you would compare them.
"the Triumph is dynamically the better bike in every possible way, except for off-road ability"...uh, isn't that the point of an adventure bike, to travel the back country roads? And, what about a cost comparison? Anyone with off-road expertise going to ride this bike?
so we can say it is a better bike than gs?in order that none of the big "on-off" can go off road with 19 inch front wheels and the enormous weight of them?i dont know no matter the marketing of the companies i dont think any bike over 150-170kgs can go off road....
Love the looks, unfortunate very pricy for me.
@pulsarnitwit People like something different for touring?
@newnum2 137 x 1.01 = 135.12HP. :-)
アライの新しいメットだね。ええやん。
So.... except for the GS being a better adventure bike the Triumph is a better adventure bike than the GS? I don't get it... Is this another apples and oranges comparison along the lines of the Multistrada 1200 VS GS review of a few years ago? Really, every manufacturer is trying to market their bikes as 'Adventure' bikes and then every MC reviewer promptly reviews the bike either from the perspective of a road bike OR a dirt bike, never both. Some reviewers would call an R1 an adv bike!
want one to join my stable with my daytona675
@dfawfzx ehm 137 / 1.01 to be precise ;P
Tambem concordo. kkkkkkkk
@ErKa44 bigger engine and shaft drive.
Guess you'll spending all your time at the dealership getting your electrics sorted every five minutes. The Explorer engine has more character than the beemer ever will and wears its weight much better
Shaft drive has been on many many bikes. Its nothing new to the bike world and BMW doesn't own shaft drive technology. The "beak" gives the bike stability over 80mph. It is however very different from the beak on the GS bike. The Engine is nothing the same. I mean really, its a totally different bike.
Well, it certainly looks like the BMW..
Explorer 1200 is aimed squarely at giving the BMW a bloody nose. And in every possible way, except for off-road ability and image???
so it's no good offroad??
LOL, whatever dude, I have 10's of thousands of miles 6 BMW motorcycles and have only had ONE (1) issue that was immediately addressed . You drink you "Koolaid" and I'll drink mine... Yeah, there is no similarities of the Explorer and the GS'- who copied who?
REFERED TO A SUZUKI GSX 1100?? PASS!!
'it will beat a GS in a race' ?
Why ride this type of bike like a sports bike and eat through them Metzler's, I don't get it?.
It's not a race, that's why people buy these bikes.
Sounds like it's better because it's Britisch,,,
Everybody's gunning for the leader of any segment. It's nothing unique. Yamaha Tenere now this...
Im poor : ) but im ok with that.
glottal 't's, lolololol
Stop patting/swatting the bike, get a dog if you wanna pat somthing
Far too heavy.. fuelled up this is a monster. BEFORE panniers, tent etc and without passenger, this thing is way too BIG for off-road anything. It needs to LOOSE 50kgs to be realistic. The truth is.. it's a Gold Wing for the wannabe Adventure set. A comfort zone for the nearly's.. .As a Brit who truly admires Triumph.. this is NO WAY good enough. Sorry.
WF
Triumphs look good, great name but cheaply engineered. low quality switch gear and finish. overall good bike but wont do 100000 miles like a GS.
LOL! Yeah, whatever!
Yawn......Another bike for the topbox/heated grip brigade.
BMW should be GLOWING!!! They copied the bike hands down... Shaft drive, handlebars...even down to the beak !
Sorry, I'll stick to the original vs a "copy"
decent bike but ill take the beemers boxer over the triumph, sorry.
RETICS1 that boxer is like riding a washing machine
vibration made my fillings come out. air cooled? come on. It's a fricken Harley with a German name
I think I will keep enjoying my 1200GS and watching the videos of other company sponsored replicas:)) sorry!
