Hi Mark Great video and thanks for your views which helped me when test riding yesterday. The deal is done and I'm getting it on Friday. I'm coming from the dark side. It was the smooth engine that made me change plus I absolutely love the looks. The 2016 model is great you really must try it. As you say in your video, what's not to like and it certainly gets a thumbs up from me. Keep up the good work. Cheers JJ
Had my 2012 TEX for several months now and have been enjoying every mile on it. There are lots of worries about weight. First of all, the bike feels light as a feather as it starts moving. Second, you it gives solid and planted feel on highway. The center of gravity doesn't really feel much different from my previous R1200R.
I do like your reviews, they are from and for the down to earth road rider rather than a testosterone-filled bike journo! I have ridden the Yamaha Tracer, owned a Tiger 800 and swapped that for an Explorer like this one. Your remarks about the extra weight making it feel more planted are absolutely spot on. I now have the resources to be thinking about another bike, but it will be in addition to my Explorer, as I consider it to be a keeper!
another great review Mark as always. I have one of these big cats and your superlatives are not false praise. I did a 3000 mile tour down to Portugal and back in December, and my Tiger behaved impeccably, some days doing in excess of 700km without missing a step
I'm on a cb500x at the moment but already considering my next bike and think I'll go for the 800 tiger next . Only had the CB a month tho so I'll wait awhile
Absolutely fab bike, smooth as silk and comfortable, bought one 4 weeks ago,get a decent one now for 7 and a half grand,2013 model Don't know what a gsis like or if its better, and after riding this beast ,I don't care!!
Good review, I took a demo out early last year before buying a GS, wanted all the electronic package with the BM but be interested in the new Tiger. Hopefully Triumph will of sorted the horrible finish of the engine bars, why they could be the same finsh as the frame is anyones guess!
Hi Mark. This is a great review. I bought a 2013 Explorer a month ago. Narrowed my choices down to the GS and Explorer. In my opinion, the Explorer is the better option. The triple is simply awesome! It has a great look too. Keep the reviews coming.
I was considering getting the 1200 Explorer for touring but it will be far too heavy as I'll have full luggage and a pillion. I've down-sized to a Tiger 800 for all my pillion tours until I start doing solo tours, then I may consider the the Explorer.
Ps Stelvio even. Also would have liked to see ride reviews of all your past (especially those you "wouldn't part with for the world" and yet appear to part with rather quickly ;-)) bikes new and old, they're great reviews!
Hey Mark, so would you still buy the Multstrada if you had the choice again? I've been considering One for a long time, but then I do like these big Triumphs too!
Hi ...yes I'd get another multistrada again ...quite light and very performance orientated ..but still great tourers ...I love the triumphs I personally own a 1200 trophy but it is very heavy the tiger is heavy but so smooth what an engine....I think it depends on how they feel to you to ride . I love them both ! Regards mark
@@markpulling12 Yes I love the Triumphs too, but I do love a big Italian, had so many Triumphs now I lost count (check my channel) but always concerned about Ducati and Aprilia reliability issue's :(
@@markpulling12 thanks Mark it’s a shaft drive I’m looking for as I’m fed up of chain maintenance especially during winter and the grand children are now starting to enjoy riding pillion I need something bigger than my MT07 and Vespa 300 GTS. Also considered Honda VFR1200F and Yam Super Ten both of which are heavy bikes like the Explorer. I don’t want a GS or any of the tourer style bikes like the trophy or FJR, RT type. I’ve had 5 triumphs previously but all smaller triples or twins so leaning towards the Explorer and we now now have a new triumph dealer in Tamworth. I understand the 1200 triple can do big miles without too many issues other than expensive valve checks every 20k so nice to hear you’ve got the same engine as I know you’ve had a few bikes looking at your videos. Keep up the good work please. Cheers Lee
Hi Mark great review. Now you have tested the BMW,Multistrada, Tiger etc if possible a review on the Crosstourer DCT auto would be great. Something a bit left field. Just a thought
@ 8:21...The seat is very comfortable - you tried the 800 a while back, and that seat was really nice? I own a 2012 Gen 1 XC 800 - trust me, the seat is NOT comfortable. Amazing bike, yes! Comfortable seat, not by a long shot.
Another good review Mark and relevant to me as we're the same height and weight. I test rode an xc last year and ultimately bought a GS so your comments were interesting. The test bike I rode sat higher- I was nearly on tip toes and the suspension was quite harsh, especially compared to the more expensive GS with it's semi active suspension. How many miles had the bike done you test rode as I'm wondering if the suspension settles down and smooths out after a few k miles as it was definitely different to the one I rode. As you say the engine's a real peach and I liked the dash layout too, but because my test bike sat higher than yours I noticed the bikes top heavy feeling more than you though if you're over about 5'9" this wouldn't be a problem. seems like the one I rode may not be typical of an Explorer with a few thousand miles under it's belt as from what you say they look to settle down and improve over when they are fresh out of the crate. Cheers Ade.
+adrianbarrie13 Hi ade the bike had 10 ,000 miles on it and rode as new but the suspension felt very soft and plush cant wait to try the new one in april all the best mark
Hi Mark, another good review thanks. About a year ago I owned an Explorer and I thought it was a fantastic bike. I'm now in the market for another adventure type bike and would be interested to know your answer to a specific question: Which would you choose from the following: DVT Multistrada, S1000XR, GS Adventure or Explorer (pity the new one isn't out yet for a better comparison)? Thanks and keep up the good work!
hi the gs felt a similar bike to ride as the triumph in terms of size and weight ..the xr is the most mind warping of the bunch and the ducati blends all the great features ...id def recommend a demo on the multistada im still loving my 2010 model all the best mark
Nice video.... I have the same bike and the weight is only an issue I think if you want to do some off road stuff. If you are a tarmac kind of rider then its a go.. a word of caution for off road it is some 60kgs heavier than the 800.
Mark....superior review! I have a '14 Tiger 800. I've been thinking about moving up to an Explorer. Aside from 'weight' and HP, what other noticeable differences between the two? Thanks!
Hi matt thanks ! , it feels alot heavier read stable and alot bigger ,the bigger engine has alot more pull from low revs but wouldnt say its more fun than the 800 just more relaxing if thats what your after cheers mark
Hi Mark, Great test on the Triumph and you certainly are impressed. A while back you tried Honda's Crossrunner but think you should give their Crosstourer a go. That model has the same Silky smooth V4 1200 engine as you may know, plus they do an auto as well as a manual. Give them both a go and let us all know your thoughts. Kind regards John
another good review, is there any chance on future reviews with heavier bikes that you actually do a bit of wheeling it around engine off i.e. like you were in a garage or parking place? This would give us short arses/weaklings a better idea.
Hi David ,I have actually started doing that in a few of my newest reviews but sometimes I just plain forget ,will definitely try and remember every time from now on best regards mark
I'd love an original 1200 multistrada as my next bike, i just don't know if I can trust it in terms of reliability, did you have any problems with your 2010? There are quite a few known issues and recalls I just don't want to be left stranded or paying out big bucks for repairs. That's why I'm looking at bikes like the explorer, but I don't think they offer quite the same riding experience as the MS
I'm also away a lot and it could be left standing for a while, like my vstrom hasn't been touched for 4 weeks at the moment (if I rider her this weekend) and I have no doubt it'll start and be fine, just not sure I'll be as confident with the MS.
Hi yes it's bigger and heavier than the 800 ,if you are quite tall and fairly experienced you should be fine ,it's one of my favorite bikes ,didn't notice any heat issues but then it's not too hot here in the UK all the best mark
Hi michael,no i wouldnt advise this as a first bike its very heavy and the chances of dropping it are very likely as a newcomer to biking, try something lighter and smaller first like a suzuki vstrom 650 ,versys 650 etc even if its just for six months or so to get your bike handling skills up then move up ,as a first bike a 650 will still blow you away with its acceleration ...enjoy the sport all the best mark
