  • Joining Miss Universe Philippines was a childhood dream come true and an opportunity of a lifetime. However, as with most dreams, they come at a cost. Today, I'd like to share with you how pageantry has affected my body image, how I'm healing, and how I'm learning to love my body again.
I hope this video enlightens anyone who aspires to become a beauty queen, encourages the pageant community to be kinder, and challenges the norms we've subscribed to for a long time.
I do think pageantry will always be relevant. But I hope its evolution and progress comes sooner than later for the sake of the next generation it aims to empower.
    Love,
    Ayn Bernos

I'm a foreigner living in the Philippines. I don't want to shit on the culture, but I honestly think the pageantry thing can be quite toxic. If the unrealistic beauty standards are not enough, the "half-foreigner" winners trend (and the media in general) seem to have made things even worse. When the vast majority of the people are short, dark-skinned, not that skinny, with imperfect teeth, rounder cheeks, it's hard to say those misses represent the country (not diminishing the efforts, talents and merits of the other candidates, especially in a country with a significant level of miscegenation).
So I personally think it's really important that you share this message. I'm sure a lot of the girls saw themselves in you, when you were competing and now too. And hopefully they can understand that beauty comes in different forms.
For the record, you are absolutely gorgeous now, as well as before and during the pageant. Thanks for spreading this message!
PS: unrealistic beauty standards exist in all countries, but the fact that pageantry is such an important aspect of the PH culture makes it even more important.
PS2: Marcos is my first name, not related to the president.

It saddens me how the pageant removed the height requirement but the society still have SOOO MUCH expectations. I hope you're in a better place!

Yeah. Like what was the point of removing the requirements if they'll find loopholes to police their bodies again.

Thanks for making this video, Ayn.I just want to say I 100% relate to everything (even if I've never joined a pageant haha). I've been skinny, curvy, toned--you name it, and every time I've always felt like there was something lacking and I realized that it's just this very particular typeof policing women's bodies here in the Philippines that's been hammered into us. It's probably not just here in the Philippines that this happens but I think it's definitely more insidious here. People just can't leave women's bodies alone and oftentimes, neither can we. So I 100% agree with body neutrality's ethos. Even if you choose to celebrate your body, it should never be grounds to police anyone else's.

    Short story ahead~
Recently, I also joined a pageant in our school and I won. As happy and grateful that I am, it affected me negatively physically, mentally, and emotionally. I had a hard time living for myself as I was constantly living and fitting myself in a box on what I'm supposed to do hence, making me lose all the confidence I have before. Right now, I'm taking a step back and prioritizing myself to heal and this video was uploaded at a perfect time. I've been bottling these emotions for I always had the thought that I shouldn't let myself be affected negatively because I won and this is what I wanted. So, thank you ate Ayn for making me accept and validating what I've been feeling for almost a month now. You continue to inspire me and teach me to accept who I am again and love myself for who I am and not what society dictates. I appreciate you po and very proud of you too ❤️ I've been your fan since 2018 and I really treated you as an "ate" na I never had but really needed HAHAHA❤️

Just watched it last night and I was so close to crying. You are strong, amazing, an empowering queen and most importantly an inspiration to many, Ayn. As someone who looked up to beauty queens ever since and even baby nad had dreams of being one, having you on stage and proving so many people about how important it is to love every inch of yourself from body, weight, figure and so much more. Thank you for sharing your story and for being an inspiration to many, Ayn. Lots of love 🤎

thank you for this, mx. ayn. i, myself, participate in pageants. i have won a crown before the pandemic and i will be passing on the crown next year, but with the pandemic, i gained weight and everyone around me tells me that i am not fit to become a beauty queen. it makes me sad that the standard of physical beauty in this industry is still like this. i look at myself in the mirror and think, "am i really not fit to be a beauty queen because of my belly rolls and not-so-tangos nose?" this has been going on for years. thank you for making me see a wider perspective when it comes to these matters. thank you for being an inspiration to me and many others, mx. ayn. i pray that you will be even more successful and i hope i get to me you one day.

Ate ayn girl, thank you for sharing your experiences. I wish we all had the mindset to celebrate our true uniqueness and how we all look. I am glad you did not allow others to ultimately define how you look and who you are at your core. Hearing the suggestions people gave to slim your face down and remove your round cheeks/face or change your (already nice) teeth is so disheartening. A pagent queen should not be a cookie cutter, one size fits all look. I thought you looked beautiful during your MU time (and still beautiful to this day). You continue to defy what must be the "status quo" or standard of beauty and it is must appreciated.

I love youuu miss Ayn❣️ I have the same experience as you. I'm starting my pageant journey and was advised to lose weight so I did, but after I achieved the 24" waistline goal... I was like "now what?"
I didn't feel good because I lost muscles that I worked hard during the pandemic and the thing is I didn't qualify for the pageant that I was preparing for so I'm now sad for all the muscles and effort that I wasted huhu
But thanks to your vids and posts coz I now have insights on what to do and I know I have you along with my "getting back myself" journey 😘

You really make me feel so good about myself. Honestly speaking, you're one of the reasons why I feel so confident with myself and is able to wear anything that i want even though a lot of people tend to make me feel bad about myself just because my arms are big or they think I'm fat, but in reality, I'm not, I'm starting to love myself as well. Anyway, I want to thank you so bad because you helped me all throughout my journey. I love you huhuhuhuhu, Thank you so so much for being an inspiration and for making not just me but many people out there to feel good about ourselves. Also, I love how you take care of yourself despite being a social media influencer, I get so inspired because of the sincerity I can feel in what you do. Thank you for teaching us the life lessons you have learned and for making it a little bit easier for me too. I hope to see you in person someday. Moreover, I feel like you have always been my friend, I hope I can see you in person someday and actually be friends huhuhu. Thank you for your existence!!

When I used to live in the Philippines as a child, I really thought that I was the fattest btch out there. I was naturally taller than many kids my age (maybe about 4-5 inches taller) and definitely not one of the skinniest. My lower body, especially my butt and thighs are naturally bigger and people all thought I was fat so I believed it for a long time. When I saw old photos of myself recently, I was not even fat, mas matangkad lang talaga ako sa karamihan ng ka-edad ko. Society does really affect what you think of your body.
