I'm 79 years of age and have seen well over 100 jazz shows. Still someone comes along with something new...like Hirom, that just blows my mind. Saw her in person last night.WHAT A SHOW !!!!!! FLIP2770
5.2.2020: 79 likes But your comment is 4 years old, so you are now 83? Let's get these some more likes. Btw: oh yeah! Hiromi is great. And Simon. And Anthony.
It's like Chick Corea's (RIP) come back. I was lucky enough to catch her with Edmar Castaneda in Montreal with a big signed poster and a record. Their smiles really are contagious even when they're not playing 🤩
Hiromi's The Trio Project is nothing short of incredible! Anthony Jackson's bass is superb! Simon Philips played with Toto on the untimely passing of Jeff Pocaro. As you can hear, he is a master at his instrument! And Hiromi....well! Again, you can hear her expertise on the piano! She is a master! Her "Trio" is a masterful tour de Force in Jazz! Thank You, Hiromi! Thanks all!
Clearly they kept him in a separate room where they were slowly sucking the oxygen out to see what kinds of sounds they could get. Amusing as it was, this was a wonderful performance!
Hiromi to me is jazz's answer to Keith Emerson, everything about her, from her playing to the way she writes and composes music, her drive and focus to putting on a great show is second to none. She is perhaps the best pianist to ever emerge on the scene in a long time and she's only going to get better.
I was going to say you were wrong but I just checked Keith and I now understand where you coming from.... definetly very similar... thanks for the sharing
Rafael Lopes Sax i highly recommend you check out this album of Keith's, it's called Emerson play Emerson, it's him on solo piano playing stripped down versions of his classic songs, it's really good.
what an honour for this drummer and bassist who rank amongst the best in the world themselves to be allowed to play with the greatest living musician on earth.
Perfect trio, gets me every time. Hiromi is a genius from another universe. Simon freaking Philips pushes her over the top. And Anthony Jackson is just the unfaltering beating heart. This transcends genres, goes direct into the soul. Wish there were more videos available from that recording session
Whatever negative comments are posted, this is nothing but short of brilliant musicianship and comments like, "his drum sound is seriously lacking any warmth and depth", are just pointless. The execution and the fact that it's a live performance in a recording studio, alone, should silence any haters. Theses three people are simply just killing it!
BRAVO! Note: This is epic. My mouth won't close; my eyes & ears are stuck ... This is more than just 'music'; this is expression ... this is an expression of 'life' ... creativity ... existence. BRAVO! :)
I am transfixed by this girl! The trio! And Simon Philips......I don't believe there is anyone on the planet with his skill set. He is so good. Wow. Wow. Wow.
+Jules Hewett I agree, same here Jules, it was other worldly. Fancy the both of us popping by this video the day after the concert, hehe, lost count the amount of times I've watched it. The opener "Spark" was outrageous, and the Latin influence on another new track was fresh. Kudos to Philips and Jackson, they were amazing too! What's are your favourite Hiromi tracks?
+Jason Butler Saw them in Largo in October. Couldn't tell whether she said "Spark" or "Spock". Either way would have worked. I will buy the album that features Spark.
WTF!!! There’s prog rock, jazz, even pop... all of this taken to perfection. I’m a big fan of Simon Philips and Anthony Jackson for a long time. Two of the best musicians of all time but Hiromi... I just can’t stop listening her. She’s kind of “not from this world”.
Her style may change in next decades but I really respect what she's established until this moment. Monster musician. So I'm really looking forward to seeing what she'll create in the future.
I just discovered Hiromi tonight and then was curious and went to Art Tatum, Thelonius Monk, Oscar Peterson, and Dizzy Gillespie and although they played in a time when possibly there were some audio limitations Hiromi sounds like the greatest Jazz Musician ever. She sounds more complete and in command of a greater improvisational unpredictability and she smiles and laughs and is beside herself with Joy, technical mastery and is having great fun between herself and the audience and the other musicians. Now after a time not listening to jazz everyday I'm excited about Hiromi the way I used to be excited about Dizzy.
It's not fair to compare people when you just briefly go to their videos and judge them. It took me a very long time to start really understanding the sheer virtuosity of early jazz musicians, and I keep learning more and more as I listen to them.
Good God... when people say “music is dead” they clearly haven’t seen this. Surely one of the greatest musical alliances ever. Jaw droppingly brilliant......
Progressive Jazz. I LOVE it! and Hiromi is a master at it. She is the new Chick Corea but much better to look at. Her energy, spirit and relentless on-going power is incredible.
This is running through an abstract jungle being chased by a intimidating morphing figure then ending up at an awesome party with galactic gargle blasters, getting hammered and passing out personified into audio form
Watched her this morning during the opening ceremonies of the summer games and had to find out more about her and her music. I didn't realize how much I missed Chick Corea until this very moment. Damn she's incredible!
Love how Simons headphones are about to slip off the front of his head during the double bass drum section at the end but he pushes them back unseen. Imagine the disappointment if they'd fallen off right at the end of an epic take. Brilliant !!!
Love these odd times in 7 made to feel even along with all of their highly skilled excursions into the "double timed" odd times. Their abilities to accurately sub divide the beats to perfection is to be applauded. Standing ovation over here even though there is just one of me in the audience.
AKC Registered JAZZ...With "THE" Greatest drummer "ALIVE"...No pun intended!! Got this CD today!! WOW!! Blows me away!! Simon Phillips truly is the greatest!! Thanks for this post!! WHEW!!!
What is the most remarkable thing in this piece is, the riff on (4+4+3+3)+(4+3+3+3)/16 beat from #1:26. That could bring extreme instability of the beats, and add tension to the ensemble. Furthermore, they continue the ad lib section with the same riff!! No matter how many times I listened to this, I would never be bored.
This is the most amazing trio. Each musician plays with power, passion, skill, and love. Simon Phillips has always been one of my favorite drummers and this is basically the music he was made to play. Hiromi and Jackson are both forces of nature on their instruments. I was so lucky to see this trio live at Blue Note in NYC a few years back. The end of the night they had to collect all the jaws off the floor of the entire room and give them back to their owners.
At first, I was sucked in by Huromi's counterpoint. Then I started to notice the drums. What an incredible performance! Seemed like every touch was exactly right and really added to the piece. Fabulous stuff. Thank you for posting this!
Got 1st row seats when they come to Toronto June 24th! IMO, 3 gifted artists at the top of their game. Gotta love Hiromi's hair style on the cover of the new CD. Hopefully there will be a vinyl release too.
wow, that would be a site for sure. And a Gartkska/Phillips 2 drummer setup. Of course that would sound like 8 drummers, haha because they're both so insanely good.
Getting this record as well. She is pure and plays so beautiful that i have cried many times listening to her. Hiromi you are my hero. And i LOVED to hear you play at the consert in Paris last summer at the Manson de la mutualite'. Just see her smile just after the song ends. Sigh

Lucky you

Can't stop listening to her music.
I got that blessing too.

Just discovered her, mesmarized. Each section is like a song in itself.
The ultimate in jazz: rythm, melody, syncops, synthesis. Awesome...

Probably my favorite studio performance of all time. They seem so, well, Alive!
5 years late but I'm just blown away..

I was going to say you were wrong but I just checked Keith and I now understand where you coming from.... definetly very similar... thanks for the sharing

Literally breathtaking! I don't think it's exaggerated to describe her as one of the greatest living musicians. Her playing makes my heart jump!

no one thinking it may be a mix/recording problem?
Whenever there is art there are critics trying to tear it down.
i can’t imagine a single negative thing could be said about this
Yes, they criticise the studio sound as they listen through their little computer speakers. And they Know they're right!
I keep coming back to this performance as the one that made me a fan for life. I have seen Hiromi five times once in this form and this is it for me
I previously thought you could only get this kind of energy from metal! The opening groove melts faces! I am definitely buying this tomorrow!
Three incredible musicians. I, for one, am beyond grateful they found each other.
Amen

Wow. Wow. Wow.
There just aren't enough adjectives. The raw talent of these three is exponentially boosted when they jam together. It's incredible.
I've yet to hear Hiromi do anything that hasn't left me awe struck. Everything she does is nothing short of genius.
I've watched this dozens of times and love it but I've just noticed that she's wearing a Frank Zappa T-shirt which makes it even cooler!
Same here!
Waka/Jawaka
Saw them live in London last night, still in a state of shock. Loads of new tracks, surely another masterpiece album in the pipeline. Sublime synergy
+Jason Butler I was there too Jason. The most virtuosic display of piano playing I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot. But with groove and soul too.
+Jules Hewett I agree, same here Jules, it was other worldly. Fancy the both of us popping by this video the day after the concert, hehe, lost count the amount of times I've watched it. Three superlative musicians so stunningly well matched.
WTF!!! There’s prog rock, jazz, even pop... all of this taken to perfection. I’m a big fan of Simon Philips and Anthony Jackson for a long time. Two of the best musicians of all time but Hiromi... I just can’t stop listening her. She’s kind of “not from this world”.
I love how you can still hear her go HUUUUUUNG every now and then despite the fact it's a studio session.
I am so into this amazing trio, I need to hear them on a daily basis and repeat.
Wow. This performance actually brought tears to my eyes! Amazing!!!
Please keep this alive in 2020 and beyond... This is uncommonly great.
Nothing Sweeter than watching and listening to true Professionals who Love to play Great Music together!!!
I never heard of her before a few days ago. I've been watching her live ever since. Just amazing.
Her style may change in next decades but I really respect what she's established until this moment. Monster musician. So I'm really looking forward to seeing what she'll create in the future.
How can one person be this badass! Ahh this woman is a superhero!
"How can one person be this badass!" Best comment 👍
I love it when she gets really happy with what she's playing.
What beautiful smiles right at the end of this.... from the heart!
That girl on the piano is awesome, she has a new fan now, I will be keeping up with this group, I will like to hear more of their music.

This is a piece of unadultered music. Just 3 top class musicians playing and incredible tune. It is so refreshing to hear .........

Progressive Jazz. I LOVE it! and Hiromi is a master at it. She is the new Chick Corea but much better to look at. Her energy, spirit and relentless on-going power is incredible.

she is a completely new definition of musicality - technique is worth almost nothing without musicality !

Simon is brilliant! He's great to watch and listen to. There are few who come up to his virtuosity.
I am so happy to see this omg
She's not even reading music. That intent stare at the other musicians tells her when to pick up. Man I love watching her play!

Anthony is a badd-muthaa - shut your mouth!!! But I'm talking about Anthony Jackson.
Beyond incredible - passion, intelligence, the ability to pull it off - YEAH!!
Just fabulous. Loads of Emerson style in that first section......
What can I say... One of the best music performances/composition I ever listen. Full of technique but also full of emotion...
