Read a review of the VW Passat vs the Skoda Superb: www.autoexpress...
The family car sector has come under fire in recent years, with buyers abandoning traditional saloons, hatchbacks and estates in favour of SUVs, MPVs and premium models.
However, VW is keeping faith and has just launched a new version of its long-serving Passat, which is now entering its seventh generation. Bosses have been careful not to mess with the hugely successful Passat formula, so the newcomer doesn't look much different to its five-year-old predecessor.

I've had my Mondeo Mk IV Titanium (with its 2.0 litre Mazda Duratec heart) for ten years now. Just the most enjoyable car to drive - even after all these years. I've looked after the maintenance well and the engine is bomb proof. Having said that, the biggest issue I had with it a few years back that nearly made me switch up was the high pressure fuel line which, amazingly, sprang a leak and nearly turned the car into a bomb. But I have a great mechanic who found a way to fix it cheaply instead of redoing the whole fuel system, which would have ended the car. I thought about updating to a new Mondy at that time - and even test drove one a few years ago (and a BMW - don't ask!), but the Mk V really is a totally inferior drive to the Mk IV. They put all the bells and whistles in it and then messed about with one of the best steering/suspension packages ever made and chucked in some really average power plants. Why?!
So, no. even though she's looking a bit tired these days, I'm keeping my 25 grand and sticking with the old girl until either it conks out or I do. Whichever comes first! I just love it.

@ Brandon Friesen, the recall of 370,000 Ford vehicles was for the crown vic, due to corrosion. It is aimed at people whom drive in salty and humid climates. Considering the Crown Vic's design age, I could pull up any vehicle of that age and it would have corrosion after many years of driving in salty and humid climates. "the recall affects 73,320 Escape SUVs, and affects only the 1.6-liter EcoBoost unit."

  • @brandonfriesen5389
    @brandonfriesen5389 10 років тому +3

Actually it was the 2.0 ecoboost in the escape having the recall due to a fire hazard, 90,000 of them. They also recalled 370,000 due to corrosion leading to steering failure. And yes, I knew about the recall for the VW's. That was in 2009, the Ford recalls are in 2012-2013. Me or my familys have had 1.6 TDI's, 1.9 TDI's, 2.0 TDI's, 2.8 vr6, 3.6 VR6, and 4.2 V8 and non with fires :)

1).. when the engine is still cold.
The camshaft is operated via a drive belt (which many other engines use). Ford improved the life of this belt by changing the material and immersing it in oil, reducing friction and giving many benefits.
TIVVT optimises the gas flow through the combustion chamber at all engine speeds, especially at part load as well as full torque. As you may know, it also enables the scavenging process. Combustion gasses are flushed out better and it stimulates the turbo.

not sure which is the better NEW car buy, but for me the mondeo is a fantastic used car. I own a 2009 titanium TDCI and it has everything I would expect a decent daily driver to have... Cruise, AC, DAB Radio, MP3, 17" alloys, Multi disc CD, stop start keyless ignition and hands free bluetooth. Even some nice touches like foldback mirrors, trip computer and half leather seats. Bags of room for everybody inside, a cavernous boot and a silky smooth 6 speed box. I average 60+mpg on the Motorway and 48 in mixed driving,
It cost £2995 from a dealer 4weeks ago (Feb 2018). Mint condition with 12mths warranty 80,000 on the clock
The equivalent passat would be £1500 quid more and the insignia... well the less said about insignias the better
All of these would be great second handers though if you spend a bit of time to find the right one... I have no idea why anybody would want a new car when you can get so much for your cash and still drive round in a car that feels new.

my 1.0 Ecoboost has had over 10k miles already since March, it's actually the first vehicle in the UK to have a 13 plate - I ordered it last summer. My mother drives it sometimes but unfortunately she's so used to autos she forgets to change gear, so we're sometimes sat at 70mph on an A road in 3rd gear... bless her. I'll let you know in a few years time how it lasts. You know Audi's response to Ecoboost? Automated cylinder shut off - yeah, because that'll last a lot of miles! ROFL.

When I was valeting vehicles as part of work experience years ago, I came across a woman's M class in which the elec seats and navi screen were malfunctioning. The fact is, all manufacturers find ways to cut costs - whether it be Mercedes with their fake sticker badges, Audi without any fog lights or VW with cheap and tatty interiors, Ford with cheaper wheel air valves, GM with thinner grade steel - all do it.

You're talking about the Ecoboost engines. They aren't "all that". The Passat 2.0 TSI is 210PS vs the Mondeo 200. Passat does 39mpg vs the Mondeos 36. More to the point, the VW TSI engines are miles ahead of anything direction injection by another other company. Ford only followed suit when they realised the TFSI and TSI engines were ruining them in the petrol market.

The direct injectors are also located centrally, giving a much cooler and denser fuel to air ratio, independent of the piston's geometry. Whaddya know? More efficiency. The exhaust manifold is also now integrated into the cylinder heads; lowering exhaust temp and also improving the fuel to air ratio even at high speeds. The turbo enables Ford to be the first to get 125ps from a 1.0 (soon to be 150ps for the MK5 Mondy). The small, low inertia rotors of the turbine allow high torque with a...

@ Brandon Friesen, maybe you're thinking of another recall they had before it, because this recall was in about 2011: "Volkswagen has officially announced a recall of 168,275 Jetta TDI and Golf TDI models as well as certain Audi A3 TDI vehicles." the problem stems from the fuel line that feeds injector number two. Over time, the resonance from the injector could cause the line to fail, potentially leading to an engine fire. "The recall covers certain 2010-2012 Volkswagen Golf TDI and Audi A3 TDI models as well as certain 2009-2012 Volkswagen Jetta TDI and Jetta Sporwagen TDI models."

Er... Ford went into a VW co-venture with the Mk1/2 Ford Galaxy using "Hitlas" 1.9 TDI's so it works both ways. The Ford KA with the 1.3 OHV was built right up until 2008 with the same pushrod engine so it didn't stop 10 years ago. CVH was pushrod and went up to 1.6 and it wasn't just the small engines, most of the Granada V6 engines were OHV pushrod. In fact, pretty much ALL were pushrod!

None of Ford's Ecoboost units are 'prone to catching fire'. The recall, which has now rectified the issue that nobody was hurt or killed in is only concerning the 1.6 units. And not too many of them at that. Meanwhile, we have a recall for 170,000 VW vehicles for a fire risk. Oh dear. :s don't lie, you've never had a 2.5 V6, only VWs.

All Mondeo models are now assembled in Germany. Parts are sourced from China, Uk, Belgium, Taiwan, Italy and Germany. They've evolved to become the best all-rounder, in their class. While they rival both the VW and Vauxhall/Opel, they perform very well against the BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Lexus. But, this is a tough class for manufacturers to stand head and shoulders above their rivals. They're all great cars...........personally, I love the Mondeo. It has grown up!

The petrol 1.0 Ecoboost is an engine not designed for Focus drivers with high milage requirements - it's a compact car and the 1.0 is for tottering around town, on the school run, going to the shops. Engines like the 2.0 TDCI or even the 83.1 mpg 88g/km 1.6 105ps are for motorway milage. may explain why all '95-'02 Fiestas have such low mileage. Ford isn't the most reliable brand, but they are better rated than VW. The Japanese, not Germans are best for reliability. Honda have best engineering.

I absolutely hate to hear motor journalist moan on about which car is 'fun to drive'. What exactly does that mean? Then they t go on complaining about steering feel. ALL modern cars with electric power steering, in my experience, all feel the same way. Peugeots to VW/ Audis to Nissans: very light and soft, which to me is a very good thing because it reduces fatigue when battling city traffic. And since when is a Ford Mondeo better than a proper german car? I dont think any person who owned a Mondeo (bought with their own money) will agree after 5 years of ownership. Mondeo reliability was so bad that the local dealership dosent sell Mondeos at all. Their Ford lineup consists of Ford Rangers, Focus' and Fiestas. You hardly see Mondeos on the road here ( yes cars 5-10 yrs old) all junked.

Why is it always assumed that everyone wants to drive round corners flat out all the time? Some cars suit different driving styles better than others. The original Focus was praised for being the best handling car ever made but the ones Ive driven have always felt twitchy and required constant correction to keep in a straight line. I would prefer my Astra mk 3 over one any day, and the focus was so bloody ugly! Just my opinion. Always thought VW dull but well engineered.

The EU KA had a 1.3 OHV until 2002 when they changed it to a 1.3 Duratec. And the fact that Audi, VW and BMW are the cars with most engine failures doesn't really prove your point...

..You'll think I'm lying but it was a Passat estate my dad had on demo. The central locking for the boot quit. Once the boot was opened it strangely decided to latch in the lock shut position, every time you tried to close it it would bounce back and you could see the decklid wobble, that's how cheap and tatty they are. I agree with you that German vehicles like the 7 series etc have far better engineering but the germans in the Mondeo segment; the Passat the 3, the A4 haven't a chance.

  • @juniorcossie

And the Sierra and a Carlton can't be compared because the Sierra is a Group A homologation car, but the Carlton wasn't really made for anything. And only 900 and something were made + that it cost 48 000£. for that kind of money you could have bought a 4x4 cosworth and tuned it to crush that Opel.

so we went from comparing a Passat with 30 less PS with a 240ps mondeo to an Audi RS4 with a lambo engine in it that costs far more than both the Mondeo and Passat combined? Ford hasn't got the brand perception in the UK to create a fast Mondeo. However, in other parts of Europe they wrap the dash in leather and stitch it. It depends on the market - the same reason why the unrefined insignia VXR with the 2.8 Signum engine in it doesn't do too well, either.

funny you should say that, that was a while ago in the US and they recalled the vehicles and they've likely sorted it by now. What was that also about the Golf having an even bigger recall (about 10x the scale) of its engines having a fire risk? Ask for the link if you wish. also, you're right... Ford can't get 400hp out of a 2.0 which shows how they aren't as good as Mitsubishi. In fact, they can get a 1.6 EcoBoost to 60 in 1.9 sec with 600hp.

Is that why the Mondeo gets car of the year award, year in, year out and the A4 doesn't? Thought not. You get nothing more with any A4 than you can with a Mondeo. The Mondeo even has more soft touch, even on the basic Edge models. The A4 is efficient, and a quality, solidly built car, but not as nice as a Mondeo. In fact, when the MKIV Mondeo was launched in 2007, it was a real game changer. Everything about it was just premium and luxurious, every manufacturer went back to the drawing board.

They turbocharged a 1.6 CVH, put it in an RS turbo and they ran 150bhp through a push rod thats mean't to plod along and they wondered why it was so unreliable? Every other manufacturer was using camshafts even Vauxhall were using them in the Astra E and lets not forget the Lotus Carlton.

No, you don't understand. I'm not saying about the video. I'm saying about the test on the website, it compares relative models. The video is a generalisation of the cars, hence why at 3:59 - he's not changing gear in a Mondeo, but an Insignia. You can tell by the centre console, and at 4:11 the old MK!V Mondeo is shown. Wow, you really don't know what your talking about, other than what features your car has. It's nothing special. The Mondeo offers more of everything for less.

For the first time ever, there's a 2 stage variable displacement oil pump that ensures that the engine runs at optimum oil pressure in the entire speed range. Ford also designed it to follow the torque curve of a 1.6 TDCI. And you wonder why it got engine of the year awards 2 years running?

The Passat is a lot more refined than both the Mondeo and Insignia.
Bear in mind that both Ford and Vx inflate list prices i.e. you will work out of a Ford or Vx showroom paying quite a bit less than you would for an equivilent Passat.
    VW don't really negotiate prices.

The warranty for it is 100k miles, but that's not a 'It'll break straight afterwards warranty, it's a warranty... much like the majority of vehicles have a 3 year 60k mile warranty, doesn't mean it immediately becomes obsolete afterwards. The 60 reg Galaxy and Touran at work (long term demos) have over 60k and the Galaxy is used more often and feels fresher than the Touran... also, that reminds me - you seriously prefer a car like the Touran?? - yuck. The new Golf we have is impressive though.

@TomozukiII When i say "better company" i mean as in Safer Vehicles, More Reliable vehicles , Sales in Europe and Sales in U.S.A, Technological Progress and last but not least the status and image a company has. For example, VW is know for building the TSI engines in my opinion are the best engines in market. In Greece Skoda's are for taxi drivers ofc there is nothing wrong with that but people buy them cause they are cheaper not better. The more the money you give the better car you will get.

@JELH I'd put it like that probably as well. I like the Insignia , its has the best interior of the 3 in this video, best engines, and feels like a more expensive car. Passat is just below average today. Mondeo is very cheaply built inside, and Mazda is typically japanese, drives good, looks good on outside, but interior is filled with plastic and designed in 10 mins.

I think there is too much emphasis, these days in sporting in vehicular reviewing. Cars and coaches designed to take one from one place to the next. And comfort has been sacrificed in most marques of cars. I salute VW and the yanks for going against this grain, since they are trying to keep certain cars from going down this route. You can tell, also through the use of smaller wheels and larger tyres. This improves ride so much.

    1) Now I'm aware you have knowledge in the engineering dept, I can hold a proper discussion with you, I just didn't want to waffle in your ear if you weren't to understand it. Ford is coming back with its engines. Let's take the new 1.0 for example - Ford engineers have developed a split cooling system, which enables a much faster heating of the cooling liquid. It does this by bypassing the cylinder block in the cold start phase - This leads to less friction in the engine, less fuel use and CO2

I'm in the car business so i know what i'm talking. Opel have very nice design etc... but are ok driving cars. Not at the level as the new Ford's. I have 3 car's. Ford focus rs 550Hp stage4, Ford S-max 2.2Tdci 200hp with a 250Hp Remap and 550Nm of torque. and a Ford mondeo 2.0 240hp with a remap to 280hp and 410Nm. They are all great cars. The S-max is even better than the Mondeo. Because it has more (feeling) power and you can drive in comfort. Do that in an insignia and you'll get 100 Euro's

German cars are typically well made and stylish, though VW are definitely not BMW or Audi standard. In terms of style though, the VW is the best there and it's looks upmarket inside too. But Ford's are extremely fun to drive and better family cars than most rivals due to a lot more space and practicality. But although my head says the Ford is better, the VW's desirability can't be ignored :S

The Mondeo is verging on the executive cars level of luxury. There is no reason as to why it couldn't compete with a 5 series, or an Audi A4 - A5. It's only the brand name that holds it back.

You know something, I don't give a shite if my Mondeo has 'laughable wiring' or the sorts, the important thing to me is that I get a car with some style, some driving dynamics, a bit more punch, safety features, luxuries and yes, better reliability. Fortunately the poorly designed wiring isn't an issue because it never goes wrong for me, and the Passats I have had in the past have gone wrong in all sorts of ways.

@MrZaralios It depends what you describe as a "better" company. For instance I like value for money cars which VW definitely aren`t. They have better quality built but also are too expensive. The design itself is much worse than Fords.
