In the past, news that Disney was making a Toy Story 5, Zootopia 2 and Frozen 3 would have been celebrated, but surprisingly this time people were not excited. Which poses the question, can Disney continue making sequels to "infinity and beyond" or are audiences finally getting tired of Disney's never-ending sequel strategy?

I was kinda more interested in Frozen 3, considering how a major part on why 2 sucked was because of time constraints.
Assuming the team behind it gets more reasonable time to flesh out the movie, I’d be genuinely interested to see what they could make. Considering how big Frozen is and how much of a surprising impact it made on pop culture at the time, it at least deserves one good sequel.

I think it’s less about audiences being tired of sequels, and more about audiences being tired of the current quality of films Disney has been putting out. You can’t deny Marvel, Pixar, and Disney Animation are struggling right now. Fans got so upset at Star Wars that they won’t even try to put a movie in theaters anymore. Nobody wants to see a sequel to their favorite franchise with Disney’s current level of quality. That’s the real issue.

I wouldn’t say Pixar is struggling. They’re still turning in top quality animated films like Soul, Luca and Turning Red and going in a new experimental direction with their animation and especially with new directors getting to tell their own personal stories. I’d say they’re doing well and their upcoming film Elemental is definitely interesting to see; especially with the technology to pull off the interesting designs of Ember and Wade with how Ember’s face almost looks 2D and the effects of both their body made of both elements of water and fire.

I think the biggest issue when it comes to sequels is "planned" sequels vs "reactionary" sequels.
The Lord of The Rings trilogy was developed from the beginning to be three movies. After the success of Avatar, James Cameron spent over a decade developing the next four movies. After the first How To Train Your Dragon movie, Dean Deblois built a roadmap to turn the franchise into a trilogy. After the first Kung Fu Panda, Jeffrey Katzenberg announced that there was a Kung Fu Panda saga in the works that would result in a total of six films. In these scenarios, typically after the first film, all of these franchises are carefully planned, and the audience has trust in the storytellers. We believe that the creators will grow the characters, advance the themes, and expand the world we already love.
The issue with Disney's franchises is that they often feel reactionary and as if no character or story is off limits from being meddled with again. The Star Wars sequels are all reactions to criticisms from fans and alter our perception of classic characters in hopes of uplifting new ones. Toy Story 4 and Toy Story 5 seem to be messing with the finale that many people felt has already happened with the departure of Andy in Toy Story 3. In many of the other Pixar franchises, the storytellers even choose new main characters. So when it comes to Frozen, why wouldn't they spend the time to build out the trilogy in advance? Instead, as you explained in your video, they are changing the ending we already cherish.
We all know that Disney is an entertainment company, but I believe audiences are feeling like their sequels are being created as a way to serve the interests of the stockholders instead of as a way to create a special experience for all of us fans.
The "planned" sequels clearly build franchises where as "reactionary" sequels feel as if they are only extending franchises by messing with or breaking them.

I was thinking this exactly. If it’s a series rather than a sequel the story can be planned out with an overarching story but it also needs to be able to end when the planned series is done. It’s like TV shows are always better when they are started with a planned ending rather than the shows that just keep going until they die out. I also think Disney needs to be sure they are doing a mix of originals with series because I look at the list of movies I want to watch from a year and it’s all stuff I already know. I want to be excited for new things also.

    • @Taydar
      @Taydar Рік тому

@Karen Dixon nothing is planned. Its impossible. You may, and I stress may, have a loose idea but ultimately it is made up as you go along. That's how the story creating process works.

I like your idea, Issac. Sequals are becoming a fascination to Disney with all these néw remakes of Star Wars, Toy Story, Avator, and Frozen. Yet, apparently with the success of The Lion King despite having mixed reviews I loved the movie and heard of the story behind it. Now they are in the works of creating Mufasa The Lion King that will tell a totally new story taking off from Simba following the footsteps of his father Mufasa. However, I always say to myself one question that must be answered. Will it be as good as the first movie? I can't see it being as good should the songs 🎵 not be in amoungst the film, after all its suppose to be a musical. Something strange about Disney is they seem to be buying into films and changing the story around while playing about with the story. We need more stories, new characters and films from a Walt Disney perspective to help make the changes to Walt Disney World as he says that Walt Disney World will never be complete.

Hopefully the Academy members’ kids enjoyed that film as their favorite pick, so it’ll be enough for them to pick Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
Edit: Never mind. Had nothing to worry about after all. Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio won the Best Animated Feature Oscar, so I guess the Academy decided for a change of decision to just go with their instincts than what their kids enjoyed. I think the Lightyear movie would have been more popular if it had started with the toys sitting down to watch a movie (perhaps on Disney+?) that told the true story of Buzz Lightyear. Then to keep the toys involved in the story, they could switch back to the then for a few minutes as one of them presses pause on a remote. The toys could then ask the toy Buzz about the adventure in the movie they are watching, or make some comments, wisecracks, etc. And then one of them presses play again, and we go back into the action in the movie they are watching. This would have kept the toys involved in the story and also still tell the story of the “real” Buzz Lightyear. They could have wisecracked about why Buzz sounds different in the movie that are watching, and Buzz could have explained why that is the case. This would have allowed younger kids to understand why things were different with the “real” Buzz vs the toy they know and love.

The main flaw with Lightyear is it's not a movie about Buzz being a Space Ranger. It's about Buzz being marooned on a planet and joining untrained misfits to blunderingly evade Zurg...who isn't actually his father. It doesn't make any sense as the in-universe movie that the Buzz Lightyear and Zurg toys are supposedly based on.
Besides, Lightyear had the extreme misfortune to be released just three weeks after Top Gun: Maverick. Unlike Lightyear, that movie is actually about an elite team of pilots working past their differences to train for (and then fly) an intense, high-stakes mission. No wonder so many parents took their young-ish kids to see Maverick instead of Lightyear.

So I think resetting Doof and Perry back to the status quo to match their roles in the original series in the revival wouldn’t be a good idea and would undo Doofenschmirtz’s development. Toy Story, I am curious where they will go from where Toy Story 4 left off. And Zootopia obviously has a world so large there's lots of untapped potential. I like that nowadays they create universes with lots of depth to them so expanding that universe works.

I will defend the decision to greenlight Frozen 3 because I think there is a possible story concept for that film in the form of exploring the origin of the enchanted spirits ( which might not be the case, but I think it's a solid idea. Another idea I had is that it could also be a crossover film with some of the other princesses ). So even though the decision to make Frozen 3 is obviously a business one, I can at least imagine the concept for the film's premise. And with Zootopia 2, well it's just a good idea in general. Toy Story 5 on the other hand doesn't make any sense to me creatively.

And here are all movies with sequels:
    Toy Story (x5), Monsters Inc. (x2), Finding Nemo (x2), The Incredibles (x2), Cars (x3) => 5 franchises with 14 movies (9 sequels)
That's a total of 18 movies which are the first (and sometimes only) one in its franchise.
Compare that to the 9 sequels. (Also note that Toy Story and Cars are the only ones with more than one sequel)

While I do hope for more original movies in the future, I'm not against all sequels necessarily. Frozen III was inevitable, the first two movies were huge hits and Disney is investing a lot in Frozen lands in its parks, so it just makes sense, and I personally enjoyed the second one better than the first one, so I don't hate the idea of a Frozen III. I'm also not bothered by Zootopia 2, I loved the first one and it's not a franchise that feels like it's been milked (yet), so I'm happy to go back to that world. Toy Story 5 though... I agree with the story being wrapped up twice already, there is really no need to get back to that world. Lastly, I loved Raya and the last Dragon and Encanto, but I did not care at all for Strange Worlds, so original doesn't always mean good and I'll take a good sequel over another Strange Worlds any day.

Toy Story 5 I’m concerned about since they already did a perfect end with 3 then a send off in 4 with the crew split up now. Frozen 3 makes sense as it completes a trilogy and Zootopia I’m excited for as there is a lot of potential.
I think the big reason for these from Disney too is that they have been putting out quite a few originals recently like Raya and Strange World and they are bombing at the box office, whereas the previous entries from all of these broke $1 billion. So they probably view them as guaranteed money whereas the new stories have been shown to be high risk.

Hello, I very much enjoy your UA-cam videos. I actually downloaded your app way back in the day, so obviously I’m a very old watcher of your content.
I agree with you that people keep beating a dead horse in the hopes of squeezing out some more money, but I am an avid Zootopia fan, and Zootopia left a huge open-ended ending that lends itself to exploring that huge, gorgeous, wonderful world, and giving the characters more adventures, because they are first responders . So, in my opinion, they wrote Zootopia in the hopes that there would be more of those movies.
I am fairly disappointed that most news outlets tend to gloss over the great news for Zootopia fans that they will get more content only to complain about Toy Story and Frozen.
I have noticed that in order to force themselves to tell more stories in a formula, format, people who write the sequels tend to ignore what happened in the first movie or two. For example, in Wreck-It Ralph, a character had to be very cautious and could not permanently leave their game unless they lived in the surge protector , while in the sequel, for some odd reason, a character in an online game could write Vanelopie into their game, which was really weird.
And please, I promise I won’t get started on my rant over all the incredible tons of crud that is produced for frozen. Thank you for being very positive, and yet objective, you are a rare person in this day and age

The 4th film had a disappointing cliffhanger ending where the toys became separated from each other and were no longer owned by anyone. This is contrary to the previous films in the franchise, which emphasized the importance of togetherness and loyalty. I therefore believe that the franchise should end with all of the toy characters together, owned by a kid who loves them. That is what I want to see at the end of the 5th "Toy Story" film. That film could be the final film in the franchise (hey, that's an alliteration) and therefore could be entitled "Toy Story Finale".

Toy Story 4 was actually my favorite of them all so I won't immediately dismiss it like everyone else is doing. A fifth film could be great, it all comes down to the story they wanna tell and if it warrants a film. Zootopia 2 sounds great, Frozen films I've never cared for.

I'm not surprised that Disney is creating sequels that no one really asked for. After all, they seem to be remaking animated movies that don't require fixing. However, I think there is potential. What if, instead of another Frozen, Disney made a sequel to something that deserves to be continued, like Big Hero 6 or The Sword in the Stone? And, as far as remakes goes, why not remake something like The Black Cauldron or Atlantis?

Jack - I’m surprised you haven’t linked this to the Disney Parks - it seems no coincidence to me that Toy Story, Frozen and Zootopia all have lands that are either existing or coming soon to the Parks - and therefore will keep the brand relevant. It was noticeable to me that Pandora in AK was pretty busy a few weeks ago, with longer lines than a few months ago given that the new Avatar movie has increased interest in the land again.

That’s a very good point! I could have mentioned that, but I was very focused on trying to keep the video about movies and Hollywood! But you made a solid point!

Its kinda sad that Disney is completely disregarding the insight of the very person the company was named after...

Really glad I've never been affected by sequel fatigue, or marvel/star wars fatigue. I do feel bad for what seems like the majority of people who are affected by it though. C'mon Disney, and throw those people a bone. I'm having a blast with all the recent Disney stuff, but when you're the ONLY person having fun, it makes a lot of the people who don't like sequels lash out at you for not also hating it. Please Disney, just make some new stuff so I can enjoy my sequels in peace!

It’s not sequel fatigue, we don’t trust Disney anymore!!! We’re terrified that they are going to ruin each franchise!

I would like to see the movie bring things full circle and have all the toys reunited with Andy perhaps because he is now a father.. that would be a good conclusion I think

They have to have good stories for these new movies, I hope. Have a feeling that Pixar IP’s will make a big impact on the DCA side of the Forward Project. Well let’s just say they already have a Hotel 🧐 💡. And it can fluidly connect to the Pixar Pier 😁 smooth transition

I think if there's more story to tell in those worlds then by all means go for it. Personally, Toy Story 4 underwhelmed me because of the introduction of Forky. I felt Pixar was running out of ideas, but at the same time Toy Story is their biggest and most recognizable IP, considering it got an entire land devoted to it in Hollywood Studios. No other Pixar franchise has gotten as big as Toy Story to get a whole land, maybe except Cars but even then, Cars didn't make nearly as much money, nor did it have the same success with each film as the Toy Story films. Sure, some of their other films have gotten themed areas or rides in the parks, but nothing as big as Toy Story. So, I think it'll be interesting to see what they do with a 5th one. Not sure how they're going to pull it off with how Toy Story 4 ended, but with Pete Docter saying it'll be something they haven't done before, clearly, they have a plan on how to tell a really interesting story. As for Frozen III, yeah, I'm totally down for it. I actually am genuinely excited to see more from that world. Considering the Frozen films have had the biggest success in any Walt Disney Animation Studios film at least till now, there's plenty they can do with it. Who knows, maybe Anna gets an ability like Elsa has. As for the franchise formula, no, I don't think I am. To me, it's not so much about studios making money, but the stories they can tell. I think franchises will be here to stay, and I don't think I'll ever get tired of it. It's similar to some audience's superhero fatigue, when they don't realize there's so many different stories to tell from the comics that never gets repetitive. A franchise is successful as long as there's another story to tell and it's done right, otherwise it can't continue. Though, I think the company has gone in a completely different direction when they first had the idea of sequels. I remember watching the video when Walt Disney announced the Florida project and pointed out, he didn't like to repeat himself, and in this case make sequels to his pictures. This day and age, just goes to show just how different the Walt Disney Company has become.

Toy Story 3 was the perfect ending but ngl I really liked seeing Bo Peep in Toy Story 4 because it was so sad to see that she was separated from Woody before TS3 started. I also feel that the beloved characters like Rex, Piggybank, the potato heads and Slinky never got enough screen time so I’d be very entertained by a story that the central plot was based on them. It’s crazy that Pixar will pay their voice actors to be there but them give them such a small amount of lines.

We don't need another Frozen or Toy Story! Just leave them as they are!!! I get its about the money in the end, but Disney honestly can't come up with more original stories?! They made Encanto and Turning Red already so I know they are capable. Either way, great video Jack!

I notice when sequels to Dreamworks movies are announced they are received better because they have been making sequels, most of the time better than the original, while Disney sequels are not taken as well as most are not as good as the original.
