100%. If you've even taken apart electronics, you'll know how difficult it can be. The fact that Big Boss can do it to nearly every product w/ perfection, well, that's why he's Big Boss.

The plumber's solder was my guess as well. It's high in silver content.

People go at it with a $10 soldering iron and a $20 heat gun with no microscope and think the solder will magically flow in to place on all the pins.

Bro, I think the stuff they’ve been using is the stuff that they used to tin copper pipes, because that solder is different than the one that you use for electrical soldering and also the person was literally going blind. Didn’t know what they were doing because I don’t have an electronic microscope to see what they’re doing. Typical amateur night i’m surprised that the HDMI pads did not rip off.

Judging by the grain of the material and your needing to ramp the heat, the customer likely used an Rohs compliant non-lead solder. Best also makes a 67/39 Pb/Sn eutectic that's great. Their 60/40 is a very decent general purpose solder, I use it too.

Finally!! A professional admits that there's a BETTER solder than Kester. I repeatedly tried to convince a management where I'm working, that we need to change the solder to other brand than Kester, because Kester is sh*t. Sure, Kester is sh*t cheap that's why the management choose it to save cost, but if it contributes to most production quality reject because of it's inferior performance (price don't lie, mate), then it's not cost saving. It's sh*t saving.

I have things I want to fix, but I would practice on a unimportant board prior to the real one. Even if it's a device (broken, or partly working) that I got off eBay or similar. The videos help with how something can be fixed, reference info, and anticipated results. But the real test comes when "it's your turn" and you are the one holding the soldering iron, the hot air gun, tiny wires, connectors....
I wonder if the prior attempt used plumbers solder! I don't do repairs for a living, but more of a hobby. I work for a warehouse and we sell gym equipment. I work in the shipping / receiving but mostly select items - some light, some heavy - and get them ready for shipping. I check dumpsters, and curbside stuff for electronics.

Can't fail to agree with any of the points in the video - when components were mainly through hole you needed skill and the correct tools, now its mainly all SMT that has increased dramatically. Repairs are not being helped because people setup 'repair shops' to fleece customers knowing that the electronics being fixed are expensive items, the repairs on this site are top notch and impressive it has to be said.

You don’t. Flux is cheat codes. No flux is hard mode.

When you screw up, send it to Alex. Or better yet, just send it to Alex when it breaks.

A job like that makes me wonder if the customer used jewelry solder or that weird stated glass solder stuff. A delusional attempt at best.

Smart business decisions are more easy quick jobs make you more money, if you want to figure something out to take more time it will make you go under. Time is money and Alex says it best.

People really don't seem to understand the need for flux! I think because soldering wire often says "2% flux" on the packaging, they assume that there's now no reason to buy flux. Looking at this repair attempt, this person is clearly one of those that don't understand why they still need flux! 😆😆

It looks like the customer attempted to solder a new connector using soldering iron from ACE Hardware.

Is it bad that I'm laughing at Alex's Annoyed tone and sarcasm.
