I want to believe that Bach would be joyously overwhelmed by the enormous diversity of modern music. Video games are still not generally accepted as art, so it makes sense that the music is not also widely respected. Hilary is so wonderful and fun, I hope she gets to be on the show more often.
Considering that the truth behind,at least in media that isn't music, the so called classics of the artworld has been revealed, video games are definitely better then any artwork, more so the ones from the 20th century.
Some of the people you do this series with are in analysis mode, some are clearly taking mental notes or getting excitement out of loving each moment, but watching Hilary listen to Gehrman the First Hunter you can really see her feel it, it's beautiful
Gehrman's fight is essentially two people trying to free the other from an endless nightmare, with Gehrman having suffered it for much, much longer than you have and pleading for you to let him continue this burden for the part he played in its creation, while setting you free in the process. But with the signs we get across the game of just how much he has suffered, it's our want to free him too. And in your "victory" you take his place as caretaker of the Hunters "dream", unless you've obtained the power needed to overcome the being that beholds the dream itself.
There's more to the tragedy than that - the underlying message of Bloodborne is that the Great Ones weren't what created the horror, it was *humanity itself*, forcibly seizing and exploiting the Great Ones' gifts until humans became monstrous with their own blood-gorging greed. Gehrman, in his wish for the Dream, was perpetuating his own sins and passing them to others. The only salvation comes from ending Mergo's troubled, exploited dream-life, ending Gehrman's dream, and becoming one of the Great One's true children to break the cycle. The humans of Yharnam, and the Hunters in particular, are so violently twisted into a knot by their own crimes, that undoing that knot in itself is the sublime, crushing suffering of having to face human wrongdoing.
Interesting point by Hilary about "To Zanarkand" the way she picks up sadness in the piano. Even though the song appeared in the beginning of the game, the context of that scene is indeed a preparation for the final battle, where the cast (or some of them) already knows the plot twist which would befall the main character Tidus if they succeed in defeating Sin. This plot point goes in line with Hilary's observation that "it's calm, but not without issues", because the song in my view also depicts bittersweet memories and the struggle of letting go and be content about the situation.
Re: "Ultrakill/Keygen Church" This particular piece stems from the mind of one individual who goes by "Keygen Church" in this case, but usually "Master Boot Record". I cannot understate his genius...there is SO MUCH to his music. In addition he puts out genuine cryptography puzzles with each album release, culminating in a bonus track upon solution. So, this is just important for me to say...this is a separate composer, and the music has, in its core, nothing to do with the game.
I wish more people gave his other stuff more time. I'm forever spamming reactors for TSR to listen to others, usually Asgretalos because it goes so damn hard on classical badass style.
Man, I hadn't heard the Suikoden 3 intro in a long time, recognized it instantly and almost got moved to tears by it. Maybe I'm associating it with Murayama's recent passing.

30:08 this reminds me of all the crossovers I saw in show growing up when characters from shows that just feel like they shouldn't work join each other for an episode or 2 like this feels like the episode ending number on some crossover between a show about a rock band and a show about some sort of idol group or something and after they finally managed to put aside their differences they worked together to save the event or whatever and now this is them performing together because they are friends now
Chopin's life game: This one is called _Trusty Bell: Chopin's Dream,_ or by its English title, _Eternal Sonata._ While it does have short vignettes about Chopin, and you play as Chopin, your character is a heavily fictionalized version of the figure, and the majority of the game takes place in a world that may or may not be the dying fever dream of the famed pianist and composer. I never did finish the game but I keep meaning to go back and do so(and it's getting harder and harder, what with the game never getting re-released for consoles after its initial 360/PS3 release)
when I think about 'calm' the first thing that comes to mind is Pokke Vilage's theme from Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. You should listen to listen edit: you talked about it as I was writing the comment 💀💀
Oh my god, its been so long since I last heard The Brawl theme. I was hit with such a powerful wave of nostalgia and swelling of power and confidence. Beautiful piece to end on Marco, BRAVO!
All the main Suikoden games are in the same world. The stories are generally about political conflict in different regions of that world, but the world is connected. Its cool because a recurring character can go from hero to villain or vice versa just by virtue of pov and nationality.
I think the reason that Nintendo have - as you put it - an almost monopoly on happiness in game music is that happiness (and joy) is an emotion that play naturally lends itself to, but which tends to be undervalued in the sort of 'serious' art that AAA video games tend to try and capture. Not much room for happiness when you're trying to tell a story about cycles of violence, war, or of overcoming your anger management issues following your wife's death all while trying to form a bond with your son. Those aren't the sort of stories that really focus down on happiness. Meanwhile, Nintendo still have a fair few of their franchises focusing on play above and beyond anything else, with whatever narrative is present being there to justify the play rather than being the point of the game. I think there's a bunch of indies who also do a good job of happiness - Pretty much everything on the Super Lucky's Tale soundtrack for example - but I'm struggling to think of much from the AAA sector. Maybe Vivi's Theme/Alexandria Theme in FFIX? Likely some of Little Big Planet but that entire franchise feels like a relic from before Sony fully committed to their open worlds and linear cinematic games. Snowdin Town and Dating Start! themes in Undertale, I'd say also do happiness pretty well. (Though when they're not pursuing happiness and video games as play and nothing else, Nintendo are also very good at distilling anxiety and panic into their music. The Guardian battle music from Breath of the Wild, the Gloom Hands battle music from Tears of the Kingdom, even - in a more playful way - Frothy Waters in Splatoon 3. Also Ultra Space: Ruin from Pokémon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon but that straight-up cheats and plays a town theme from elsewhere in the game backwards and with added static. Still. No game has managed to capture that emotion of anxiety or panic for me as well as Sonic's drowning theme. 15 seconds of pure anxiety and panic, ending in a brief but noticeable rest before the time limit expires and you get the best gurgling sound effect the Genesis's sound chip could muster.)
Final Fantasy X - To avoid spoiling too much about the story, Sin is a civilization-destroying monster that has been destroying any towns or cities that rise up, and your group is on a holy pilgrimage to defeat it. The scene in the video takes place near the end of the game, but it's also at the beginning of the game, and sets up the framing device, of Tidus telling the tale of the journey to those ruins from his point of view. He joins with a summoner, Yuna, on her pilgrimage to defeat Sin, and bring about The Calm, a feat previously achieved by Yuna's father, before Sin eventually returned ... ... ... ... ... The truth of the matter is a lot more complicated.
I remember when I played FFX for the first time back then in 2001, To Zanarkand was playing in my mind for months, even in my dreams. I really miss Uematsu compositions on last FF games, they're simply not the same without him.
The best Game Music is. Sacred 2 - Sacred Worlds - Blind Guardian concert in Game as a side quest. The only game that comes close to that or probably since Rebirth beats it is the Final Fantasy 7 Franchise.
It makes me so happy to see people appreciate Suikoden'a music, in or out of the video game sphere. It's so underrated. I don't know how many times I've gone back to watch Suikoden 3's and Suikogaiden 1 and 2's animated OPs, in large part due to their music.
Would love to see some of the persona 3: reload tracks get some love. Almost 100% bangers Also I guess I would describe to zanarkand as a sort of quiet acceptance? Like its tidus coming to terms with what has to happen to bith him and yuna at the end of their journey? Hard to explain I guess. Definitely sad either way, like the ending
Pokke Village always gets me so emotionnal because I used to love playing Monster Hunter on my PSP when I was a kid. It brings me back to simpler times when the worst things I had to worry about were homeworks lol
I thought the breadth of titles and genres was a little limited for me but we love what we love I suppose but many of them were operatic of grand in nature which suited the listener. Some great stuff here.
omg she is such a vibe i loved it please bring her back she needs to hear all the DOOM music and please listen to hunter x hunter OST all of them are good especially Theme of Kage & RASETSU
Interesting talking about ‘calm’ music in video games. For me no other track comes close to provided the level of calmness that the title theme for Ocarina of Tine does.
The Suikoden series all takes place in the same world, but aside from a few callbacks and recurring characters, each game stands as its own self-contained story. Much as I like the intro to _Suikoden III,_ the second game is my absolute favorite in the series, and has the best soundtrack and intro, IMO.
I still can't wait till it gets to this section in 6 Then again Setzer is my favorite character from the game so seeing his thoughts on him would be nice
Damn, I don't play fighting games and have never touched a GG but its music and character design is so f***ing amazing. Regarding FFX, in that moment iirc they also know that Yuna is going there to die (or maybe Tidus to disappear, or both, can't remember). So there's also that sadness in it.
FF14 has some really good character driven emotional music that is totally worth listening to. But what Im the most surprised about is how is there no Nier song in this reaction. Like one of the most unique soundtrack ever with so many things to unpack at once. Winning so many awards for music and all deserved. Its peak game music.
To provide context about the piece "Gehrman, The First Hunter" from Bloodborne in as spoiler-free way as possible: Gehrman is a tragic character who is trapped in, essentially, endless torment. He was once a lost, heartbroken and discarded man who, in a misguided attempt to do good, brought about a nightmarish cycle of misery and grief to many - most of all himself. He is an ally and guide to the protagonist throughout the game and upon your sort-of victory (it's complicated) wishes to save you by freeing you from this cycle. This means killing you, only in this instance, it really means awakening you from a nightmare (we're talking dark and eldritch planes of existence, think Inception only more Lovecraftian). However, you are given the choice to either accept his mercy, or else bring mercy upon him yourself - freeing him, taking his place, and sacrificing your own self. Naturally he resists you, and you must defeat him in an incredible boss battle in which this theme plays. It's an epic duel between two tormented souls fighting to save the other from a ceaseless nightmare. It's tragic, twisted and absolutely beautiful. (And yes, this is the spoiler free version, this is a game with several endings, and this is the only context needed to appreciate this track)
Suikoden 3 is a game that's kind of about perspectives... You have 3 main characters and 3 minor characters that you play as and they each see some of the same events in different contexts that don't match. I'll try to explain chapter 1 lol... this is a long game. You play as 3 different characters in any order: Chris: Chris is the Lady of a castle from a merchant republic called Zexen. Zexen is not a nation that typically has female soldiers, but she was able to join the military because her father was a big deal and he and the commander went way back. A battle happens and everyone above her in the chain of command dies, and she manages to rally what's left of the army to victory, and this victory forces a peace treaty with the people she's fighting, the Grassland Confederation. However, when the peace treaty happens instead of signing the treaty, one of the 6 Grassland tribes, the Lizardmen, attack without warning and seemingly without provocation. This causes the war to continue and chapter 1 ends with your soldiers burning down the home town of main character number 2 Hugo. Hugo: Hugo's mother is the chief of one of the 6 Grassland tribes, the Karaya. He's sent to Zexen with a message as part of the peace treaty process. All along the way he's treated like an uncultured tribal person, and his entire way there is kind of shitty. He finally gets to deliver the message, but he can't even speak with anyone important, even though he's the son of one of the 6 tribes. He has enough of Zexen and heads home just in time to see his home town burned to the ground, and he sees his best friend get killed by a Zexen knight. Geddoe: Geddoe is an old mercenary working for a neighboring superpower called Harmonia. Harmonia sends him and his band of mercenaries to investigate the Grasslands, and he stops by the capital city of the Lizardmen. While he's there he sees Chris (MC 1) murder a bunch of civilians and the chief of the Lizardmen and then leave. This is seemingly unprovoked and happens on the day before the signing of the peace treaty. However... you played a Chris. You saw that you never did that, so someone is pulling the strings from the shadows to continue the war.
@@adrian4987 No. There are references to 1 and 2 but they're in the realm of easter eggs. Like this character is that one's grand daughter or something. The main villains are characters from the earlier games, but you don't need to know anything about them really.
Gehrman is the keeper of the dream, he made an awful mistake (something horrible) after which he has been forever trapped in the Hunter's Dream, to bee feed upom by a greater being (Flora, the Red Moon), withouth chance of escaping, but with the "small" power he has, in the end, when you refuse to submit to his mercy (he is litterally proposing the only truthfully good deed in the while game, killing you and freeing you fron the dream and from the horrible memories of the hunt... and from the sight of said Great being) he will fight you to try and impose that mercy, and it is sad because you know he is hostile because if you defeat him (without doing some... lets call them side steps) he knows you're just gonna take his place and its a fate he cannot bear to inflict on anyone else, he is willing to endure it till the end, of times probably
i sometimes feel like some of the pieces you should revisit after the first listen with some game audio, rosso sangue is just missing something without the speech right before it. same with order. then again i may be biased because i love the speeches of utlra kill bosses.
Can't wait for her next appearance, I want her what she says about Caius' Theme. 57:49 Oh, also The Skies Above Live by The Black Mages 1:07:33 What Final Fantasy is complicated? Prove it jk lolz
Btw, dont know if you ever had, but someone should listen N Theme or N Castle from Pokemon Balck and White, the latter is my favourite theme in all of Pokemon, and they do make great ones even in bad games
Was hoping she wouldn't know it was a game, at least for the first one. Octopath Traveler yeees. Damn, her judgement on that one... And yees Dusty Garden Galaxy and Brawl theme! Should have talked more about the last one. orz Clickbait then, she said she used to play games...
I don't like this version of aria di mezzo, the vibrato of that woman is unsettling to me, I prefer this performance of the swedish radio orchestra: ua-cam.com/video/eGl4FqUeFS0/v-deo.html
You get an opera singer to react to some video game music and instead of offer her "one winged angel" from FF7 you choose "to zanarkand" from FF10, Doom Eternal and two mario games, what's next some mobile games?!
What a great choice for happy Mario music but I think you should have shown Mario Odyssey by far the best song in all Mario games. Always puts a smile on my face
When i listen to zanarkand i feel like memories of the past that are gone. They will nevr come back again but when you try remember you feel the happiness you had again but also mixed with sadness because they are gone

That was the only proper reaction to listening to Tenebre Rosso Sangue for the first time. Hilary rocks!
her reaction to ultrakill was hilarious, mainly because that was my first time hearing that song too and I had the same reaction
This was a nice presentation! I love the way you had the music sorted into emotions and groups! Glad to see Hilary enjoyed her time here too

Yeah, it's a complete lie for the clicks.
I still can't wait till it gets to this section in 6 Then again Setzer is my favorite character from the game so seeing his thoughts on him would be nice
wish we had more time with her as a guest! Maybe a part 2?
WTF, that Suikoden jumpscare almost gave me whiplash. Now more Wild Arms please...
29:54 Highly focused Chaos
Damn, I don't play fighting games and have never touched a GG but its music and character design is so f***ing amazing.
Regarding FFX, in that moment iirc they also know that Yuna is going there to die (or maybe Tidus to disappear, or both, can't remember). So there's also that sadness in it.
if anything hilary walked away from this with a refreshed cardio playlist for sure, lol! loved it.
straight with the headbanging at 16:00
You should definitely have Hilary on again to listen to Id (Purpose), Lord of a Dead Empire, and Twilight of the Gods.
FF14 has some really good character driven emotional music that is totally worth listening to. But what Im the most surprised about is how is there no Nier song in this reaction. Like one of the most unique soundtrack ever with so many things to unpack at once. Winning so many awards for music and all deserved. Its peak game music.
I love that track from suikoden.
To provide context about the piece "Gehrman, The First Hunter" from Bloodborne in as spoiler-free way as possible:
Gehrman is a tragic character who is trapped in, essentially, endless torment.
If she liked Suikoden 3's track, I bet she'd love Making of Cyborg from the original Ghost in the Shell anime film.
I wonder what her reaction would be to La Signora Theme for Genshin Impact will be or Liberi Fatali from FFVIII
Explaining FFx Sin is hard because you have to explain what the summoner and summoned beasts are in the game.
10:04 Suikoden III is so good...
Suikoden 3 is a game that's kind of about perspectives... You have 3 main characters and 3 minor characters that you play as and they each see some of the same events in different contexts that don't match.
I'll try to explain chapter 1 lol... this is a long game. You play as 3 different characters in any order:
Chris: Chris is the Lady of a castle from a merchant republic called Zexen.
Do I need to play the previous games to enjoy this one?
@@adrian4987
No. There are references to 1 and 2 but they're in the realm of easter eggs. Like this character is that one's grand daughter or something.
The main villains are characters from the earlier games, but you don't need to know anything about them really.
Mili; library of ruina OST songs are worthy of a musician reacting.
We don't talk about love town.
thanks for reminding me how epic and incredible the smash brawl theme is LOL
Gehrman is the keeper of the dream, he made an awful mistake (something horrible) after which he has been forever trapped in the Hunter's Dream, to bee feed upom by a greater being (Flora, the Red Moon), withouth chance of escaping, but with the "small" power he has, in the end, when you refuse to submit to his mercy (he is litterally proposing the only truthfully good deed in the while game, killing you and freeing you fron the dream and from the horrible memories of the hunt... and from the sight of said Great being) he will fight you to try and impose that mercy, and it is sad because you know he is hostile because if you defeat him (without doing some... lets call them side steps) he knows you're just gonna take his place and its a fate he cannot bear to inflict on anyone else, he is willing to endure it till the end, of times probably
i sometimes feel like some of the pieces you should revisit after the first listen with some game audio, rosso sangue is just missing something without the speech right before it. same with order. then again i may be biased because i love the speeches of utlra kill bosses.
yay Hilary again!!
Can't wait for her next appearance, I want her what she says about Caius' Theme. 57:49
Oh, also The Skies Above Live by The Black Mages 1:07:33
What Final Fantasy is complicated? Prove it jk lolz
Btw, dont know if you ever had, but someone should listen N Theme or N Castle from Pokemon Balck and White, the latter is my favourite theme in all of Pokemon, and they do make great ones even in bad games
Was hoping she wouldn't know it was a game, at least for the first one.
Octopath Traveler yeees. Damn, her judgement on that one... And yees Dusty Garden Galaxy and Brawl theme! Should have talked more about the last one. orz
Clickbait then, she said she used to play games...
Song suggestion for future vid: Morning Sky sung by Donna Burke from Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles.
I don't like this version of aria di mezzo, the vibrato of that woman is unsettling to me, I prefer this performance of the swedish radio orchestra: ua-cam.com/video/eGl4FqUeFS0/v-deo.html
Definitely need a react stream of the diegetic human music from monster hunter. The villages and gathering hub themes tell so much about the world.
You need to show her the video for BFG Division.
That was sweet and fun
Has there ever been a reaction to ZOE 2's main-theme?
No "Aria of the Soul" from Persona? Sadge.
You get an opera singer to react to some video game music and instead of offer her "one winged angel" from FF7 you choose "to zanarkand" from FF10, Doom Eternal and two mario games, what's next some mobile games?!
Probably!
Marco's patreons chose the songs, not Marco himself. He even said "anything you don't like, don't blame me. Blame the patreons". 6:40
oh boy, its yet another episode of... wait, this is actually like a show now...
Omg pokke village my hoooome
this track is really good, indeed! 👍
Family Guy did also kinda make a generation like big band music
ahhhh, again this reminds me i need to play suikoden
What a great choice for happy Mario music but I think you should have shown Mario Odyssey by far the best song in all Mario games. Always puts a smile on my face
When i listen to zanarkand i feel like memories of the past that are gone. They will nevr come back again but when you try remember you feel the happiness you had again but also mixed with sadness because they are gone
Does UA-cam automatically delete comments with OF in it? I referenced her Phantom of the Opera comment as hilarious and it's gone now, lol.
Censorship ftw? *Not.*
Suikoden?! Damn.... Neat choice
