- For years I have been walking up this part constructed earth bag stair well and dreading working out how to get a nice staircase in there with materials I have available. I decided to just start and free hand it with cob and oak slab wood treads. It turned out a lot better than I had expected. The steps all feel right as you walk up and down and it looks great in the curvy building. Enjoy the video

love the contrast between the machinery and the environment it looks like someone built a shop out in nature.
If you look closely you can see the change in Kris' face as he gets near completion of this upper workshop. Some of the worry is gone
only to be replaced with an air of satisfaction and peace. Man those staircase steps came out amazing. The choice of using oak was
a perfect decision. Beautiful and durable. This whole complex really should go into a art museum because others need to see the way
he has used curved lines that are blended into every surface that soothes the eye and is somewhat contrary to common buildings yet
here it works extraordinarily well. Again, hats off to ya Kris for the fine work that you do. Me southern AZ. (USA)
Since the purpose of cob/adobe/rammed, contained, or bagged earth is to replicate the strengths of shaped stone without the labor of shaping stone, stone infill to reduce cob labor makes perfect sense. Glad to see new content from you Kris, thought we’d lost you to industriously hydro powering half of wales
You won't lose me to that. in fact I think I will be making more videos soon, im just in a bit of a busy period at the moment trying to do to many things.

What I love about those stairs is the same thing I love about your whole workshop: you show that older, more natural and locally-sourced forms of construction are both viable AND beautiful. I know it's been a lot of work, Kris, but thanks ever so much for putting in the effort of filming so people like myself can see the beautiful, finished product (not to mention the hard work along the way)!

I just don’t understand how a grown man can go for a “Hobbity” look in general (faking something that never existed anyway), but sacrificing safety and functionality for such a childish notion is downright stupid.

Amazing to go from that small model to a nearly finished project. It has been so enjoyable to watch the process.
I've been a hardwood installer for 20+ years. When you first started the stairs, I was like "what the hell is he doing?"
Then I realized what you were doing and was like "carry on, shouldn't have doubted you"
Seen all your newest videos and now have gone back to binge your older stuff. Amazing work.
I just love how you can get from one workshop to the other. Almost like a secret passageway :)

Said it before, you need to get your shoulder/neck problem sorted, or your best laid plans could come to nothing... or much less than you'd hope for.
You could of fitted LED's under those treads... just kidding, but a handrail would be good. The stairs would be a nice place to hang/mount pictures of the land/works.

Lovely job as always and thanks for taking the extra time to make the videos to share. One suggestion, get a decent thick rubber mat at the top of the stairs to try and trap the swarf from your boots. You will be amazed at how even little bits get embedded in your shoes and then embed themselves in the wooden treads. I now have stairs that are more swarf coloured than wooden.
Definitely a big thank you for noticing the overhead clearance on the stairs. And they look great. But after you bang your head no one cares what they look like. So it will help more people appreciate them. 🤓👍

Hi, The guy I got the Lathe from gave it a good oiling before we loaded it. The mill has had a good oiling to. Im hoping to get the building dried out as quickly as possible as the damp is not good for the machines. With the risk of lock downs at the moment I wanted too get them while I could. Thanks for the comment.
Thanks for your reply. Great to hear that. It would be a shame if they get rusty and loose their precision but I am sure you know how fast moisture can ruin your tools considering how long you live on the land.

this way of building has so much character, really a sight to behold. and to think that most of this is just made with natural nearly free materials makes it even more beautiful. i'm a painter and the prices for materials go higher and higher while the quality of the products is just horrid, and the end product never looks as unique as this..
i think those stairs just turned out so nice, very organic. the oak treads are just perfect. they look so right for the hobbity look your chasing. thanks Kris....

Stairs look great, especially with all that lovely oak. Its another huge step forward for you (no pun intended) by linking up the old building and the new. I love this type of construction (cob), it reminds me of a traditional african method used to build 'rondavels.' They included dung in their cob and the floors were mostly dung which dried rock hard - and had no smell.
Word of advice on the trap. I used to get it a lot, I'm only 26 so its not age related. Once I moved out of my old house I got a new, much softer mattress and now I rarely get cricks anymore. I suggest you look into getting a softer/better mattress.

Thank you for showing it can be done. I live on a couple of acres in a code Inforcement zone. I have a little tractor. I grow Trees and cactus and plumeria. Neabors like to shoot off fully automatic guns for fun. I have many bird feeders and ponds to sustain a small biosphere. It’s very hot in the summer but no snow. This summer I’ll go to Alaska to enjoy the rain forest perhaps. I find simple things joyful. You personify that.

Lovely Job! Consider two sets of railing heights. One for your we future children and one for when you are old like me. After falling down stairs in my forties, for the last forty years and more-so now I try to always use a railing; just in case.

I recently finished bulding a cord wood and cob shed I have always wanted to build a cabin that way waching your videos have inspired me to do so I have learned some techniques from your house build it has taken way longer than I thought but looks beautiful thank you for your content having done this project realy makes me appreciate how hard it is and how hard you work to give us this content couldn't imagine trying to film it all as well I would still be working on it I'm going to incorporate some cord wood and cob in my cabin build but not the whole thing it is to time consuming thank you again for your great content all the best from alberta Canada 🇨🇦

I hope you add a handrail, if not two. With your welding skills, you could easily add a metal one. But I'd love to see you find a twisty, bendy sapling to instead make a "natural" wood handrail. Go for it, Kris!
