I'm preparing for my masters entrance exam, haven't read criticism in my whole life, but now I'm stuck with it. Your lecture videos are literally saving me from all the gibberish that my syllabus looks like! Thankyou so much!
4:41 "A government designed in the context of empiricism" - great observation, Tom. This means we incorporate greed and jealousy into the design of our government, we don't just ignore it. The Enlightenment embraced jealousy as who humans are, they negated the Tabla Rasa notion (later embraced by Marx) that humans can just rewire themselves. This is why neither communism nor libertarianism can work.
Been doing history/philosophy for several decades. Tom Richey is a cool cat, man! I'm literally tuning up my knowledge base thru his stuff. Gifted, man, gifted!
That is so kind of you! :) However, as I am a danish student, my paper is also written in danish. I would have been glad to share it with you, if only you could understand it!
Very odd request but I would love to read your paper. The Enlightenment is by far one of the most interesting era's, and I'm fluid German. I hear Danish isn't to much different then German, Id love to take a crack at translating it along with reading your thoughts
3:08 "This model is based on jealousy." This is a genius observation by Richey and very well presented. He describes how jealousy is used to protect a republic via separation of powers. Unlike our modern day rebranding, the philosophes viewed jealousy as an energy we could harness to produced good!
Wouldn’t it be great if everyone lived in a van down by the river? These high school kids may be too young to appreciate that line but old enough to admire the whole lecture.
While I think our politics are very different, I very much appreciate your take on classical philosophy&the philosophers-economists who influenced our founding fathers.
Hi Tom, would you consider making a video on the colonial political conglomerates? Like Colonel William Randolph and how his descendants ended up becoming what is seen to be the most prominent people in the US. ex. Randolph was a very successful man who was speaker of house of burgesses, owner of 20,000 acres and multiple plantations, and even more. He was the breeding ground for America's most prominent family it seems politically. Jefferson, Robert E. Lee, Edmund Randolph, John Marshall, Benjamin Harrison, and many more are descendants of Colonel William Randolph. The Randolphs are just one example, I would love to see a video on the most powerful and politically influential families in the colonies and maybe how it relates to today.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THIS LECTURE ON THE "ENLIGHTENMENT PERIOD IN FRANCE" (WITH A.O) 1689 - 1775 LIFE OF BARON CHARLES DE MONTESQUIEU)". CREATING: "THE TRIAS POLITICA/SEPARATION OF POWERS": LEGISLATIVE/EXECUTIVE/JUDICIAL BRANCHE, OPERATING INDEPENTLY OF EACH OTHER, FOR OBJECTIVITY SAKE/TRUTH/FACTS, ETC. "AS SUCH".
Hey Pr. Richey. I wanted to catch you while thr video was fresh. I'm the guy who posted on your video about Calvinism a while back. I just want to say that by and by you did a good job. The place where you messed up the most was in your explanation of Calvin's teachings on the will. It was not that Calvin does not believe in free will, but rather that he believed the will is not able to truly turn away from sin. Thus requiring God's 'effecacious' grace or effectual grace. He shared Luther's view on original sin.
Bryan Bridges does sin truly exist? Just like as he said about jealousy and greed, are these really good or bad things? No. Just part of human nature. It’s all how each of us interpret and communicate these feelings through our actions and intents. There will always be sin and love. The choice is ours to make. We pray to god(s) when we sin and thank god(s) when we are grateful. Weather it’s our sins or our good intentions they appear to come from and our part of the same god(s). Act accordingly, everything is already checked and balanced.
Free will has its rules just as no holds barred is still a certain set of rules. We have the appearance of making choices freely. But when you step back and look at it objectively, the choices we make good or bad are already built in to the game of life. The choice is ours to make. But in the grand scheme of it all, all choices and options have already been predetermined.
Jealous greed as natural (can be good bad). Jealousy good in that wanting to be suspicious of others, i guess by ensuring people dont take Empirical - power can only be restrained by power Jealousy to remove absolute power
I agree with Rousseau on general will. I think if a majority of the people in the USA want to dismantle the Constitution and become Communist I would understand that, however I believe that limited and representative Liberal Democracy is the best form of government ,and I believe there's an abundance of evidence to prove that, I would fight to stay a Democracy. I understand general will from a standpoint of government is for the people and if the people want something they should have it, but I disagree because I think there's evidence to prove why liberal democracy is best and that if most people were educated on it the majority would be in favor. I'm not saying currently the majority isn't in favori I'm just speaking hypothetically to illustrate my point. Sorry for the ramble lol.
hey @tomrichey it would be extremely helpful if you would be able to make a video on the War of Austrian Succession (War of the Pragmatic Sanction), or the Diplomatic Revolution of 1756, and the AP Euro side of the Seven Year's War (I already know you have a video for that for APUSH). Hopefully you can, by the way your videos are great and very helpful for studying!

+Flame Fusion Will do! My European History videos tend to me more popular because they cater to a worldwide audience but I haven’t forgotten about US History and will release more content on that front soon.
A racists is someone who puts one or more races over another race. A sexist is someone who puts on gender over another one. Just the acknowledgement that there are different races and different genders does NOT make someone a racist or a sexists! Philosophers of the Enlightenment were therefore not racists nor sexist, unless they put one race or gender over another.
This guy's personal ideology seeps wayyy to much into his teaching. Constantly calling people/ideas "communist" and saying there are differences between races (um?).
Nah personal ideology is saying this is bad that is good, he doesn't do that, he's very matter of fact about everything. And he's not wrong on either, as he isn't on most things. Respectful without compromising truth. I've been watching his videos for less than a week but I've been impressed, I only wish I had a teacher like this in High School. Most, even in college, are rather average and far more biased to boot.
Tom Richey, I Wish You Were My History Teacher!!! 😁😁😁

Guten tag! As I myself never understand a word Danish, I don't think fluid German is enough to read a Danish text but Europe is Europe i guess :D
Dude you should make a podcast, u make really good and easy to understand videos.

Excellent lecture. Succinct and cogent delivery. Well done, sir.
