I don't study anymore, I simply enjoy learning more about history and your videos are absolutely the best: informative and absorbing but so funny as well. Diderot's "hey y'all" is my life now. Greetings from Ireland!
Honestly, this channel is so amazing. I took an AP Euro semester exam and my teacher uses old AP exams and i actually knew what was going on because i watched all of these videos. thank you tom richey!!!!!!!
Hey Tom, I love your snaps! I am student with a minor in history. Today was my 1st day of French Revolution 400 level. My professor asked me to do a presentation on Diderot Thursday, so I've one day to make a biography and list some of his views. What would be the best way to get this info in one day? Besides the obvious on watching your lectures :)
+jamal alami I would normally space out the segments but since people have exams this week, I’ll try to get the remaining two segments published in the next 36 hours.
I don’t have any exams but I just really enjoy this time period and want to know more. I feel like I’m appearing like a crackhead 😂 anyway I really love these lessons :)
4:50 quite similar to Pushkin's verse (I guess he was inspired by Diderot):"We will make laugh to good citizens, and near a pillory with a last pope's gut we will strangle the last tsar" - "Мы добрых граждан позабавим/И у позорного столба/Кишкой последнего попа/Последнего царя удавим"
as a freshman in college I was required to buy and read a book called "Diderot's Chaoitic Order" by Crocker. I found it dry and hard to read...could you explain to me what I missed or was supposed to gleem insightful from this book if you are familiar with it. Thanks.
@Calvin Blanchard According to wikipedia, this is reported directly by Catherine in her letters to Marie Geoffrin. Probably a bit stronger than speculation!
King cakes it is actually 3 kings' cake, referring to 3 magic kings, in Spain that is what the 3 wise men who followed a comet to find Jesus in the Belem are called. In Spain, the 6 January is the celebration of the 3 kings' arrival and it is as big as Christmas and Santa Claus in the USA, kids get their present that night. The king's cake has normally a round shape or donut shape, and it fills with cream and merengue and is decorated with candy fruit, it hides little figures inside but as it is a tradition that takes back from Medieval times it has multiple versions and recepies depending the city of Spain you looked probably from there also multiple different version all over Latin America too. I believe your King cake comes from the Spanish traditions left in North America during the XVI and XVII.
The invention of the printing press and the spread of literacy led to the coming of so called "dangerous ideas" in that time an literally tore society into many different directions much like internet does today. Religious and political leaders then were very concerned about this new civilizing force.
That was very enjoyable and knowledgeable, but how you say the name Denis Diderot? Please work on that, I have a French name and hearing it Americanized linguistically ruins the integrity of it. Your doing this here, if your teaching a French philosophers works you should pronounce his name in the same integrity. I still liked your lesson very much
Matt Damon sure gives awesome history classes!
Andromedeus funny, but kinda true!
How you like them apples?
AHAHBSBSHAHABAB HE DOES LOOK LIKE HIM
Funny you should mention. I left comments calling him Mat Damon as well.
Sure is wicked smart.

Based on the information I've read online, Diderot was actually the one bruising Catherine's thighs

The Encyclopidia It's contributed to Rousseau more than Diderot
Not really, Rousseau turned against the Encyclopedie during its production.
