This segment on my lecture on the Enlightenment philosophes focuses on Voltaire - the most famous of the Enlightenment thinkers. This brief introduction to Voltaire addresses some of his most famous literary works (Candide, Philosophical Dictionary, and Letters on England) as well as his philosophical contributions to the Enlightenment, specifically his advocacy of religious toleration and Deism.
The entire lecture is available on this playlist: • The Philosophes: Think...
This dude is so cool! What a passionate, understanding teacher!
+Micah Wong Thanks!
I feel so.....ENLIGHTENED! 🤩
- KindaSortaStrange - mmmmm yeah
Thank you so much for the opportunity to enjoy these classes. They are great to watch!
Go ahead and do it professor . It’ll be a great contribution, and I’m sure personally rewarding
Tom, I’m so glad to have found your channel. I’m subscribed. I’ve been studying deism, and found your channel. I was Christian for about three decades, “deconverted”, and almost became an atheist. Belief is complex, because it seems to occur on a spectrum. Deism seems to be, where I fall on that spectrum.
Hello! This channel is adequately educating. I have a degree in political science and am getting a deeper understanding of political ideas that have been shaping the current global politics more than when I was being taught them in university. The lecturer is exceptionally gifted for sure. He knows how to get his lesson across so that all people can understand easily. Thanks again Rechey
wonderfully immediate description!
jfc you gave me a heart attack with that alarm
I miss the tea but thanks for all the recent videos! You’re the best!
this dude's vids might be the only classes i enjoy lmao
It's easier to listen to someone w passion.
Wish my professors in school were as passionate, as articulate and as inspiring as you. Do you ever discuss the role of Freemasonry in the lives of many like Voltaire? Thank you.
Your explanations are fantastic. You help me a lot, thanks!
Voltaire was the the encyclopedia. He was a philosopher historian who wrote very important subjects like Mathematics, Science, Philosophy, Literature, political history, dialectic etc.
Thanks for doing Voltaire.
Ayeee staying up till 2 catching up on all chapters the night before finals week
Great 14 min synopsis! Can't believe kids today are getting classroom content this dense. Would have appreciated a sprinkling of a couple of his larger contributions on free speech and separation of church and state as they both are foundations to how we self-organize
Excellent teacher, mad swagger
I love this class, congrats!
Im thinking of doing this myself of recording my lectures. Really good stuff
Thank you, esp. for introducing the term deism
thanks !! very interesting ...! Voltaire hated boredom, but your lecture was created in collaboration with a philosopher !! Good luck!
I’m feeling so enlightened
Yes more Enlightenment!!!!!
Wow a great teacher
man that beep is annoying, props to you for keeping on topic thru that
Which philosopher and their ideas had the largest impact??and how did his ideas or people change absolutism ?

Cool, he's one of the ones I don't know as much about, was interesting learning his life story
Big thanks for this amazing free lecture love from the Philippines ❤
ENLIGHTENED!!!!
Thomas Paine was also a Deist. He criticized all kinds of religions including Atheism.
“Religions including atheism” sorry but atheism is not a religion it is a stance that refuses the religious claims

@@sumiben5211Sumiben, and why is Atheism, not a religion? What religious claims does it refuse?
By chance i'm in Buenos Aires where Candide went looking for his mistress. When I wander around the streets of the old town, I can't help but think about Voltaire's book: Like poor Candide, I find myself here because "all is for the best in the best of all worlds". Read the book!
How does Voltaire influence Europe of the 19th century?
I have a French Revolution test today. Was hoping to see a Napoleon video. :(
Hey man - love your videos. Just discovered them and am really enjoying my time watching them. My only issue is that I die a little when you pronounce "philosophes" as "philos-oafs". Its more of a "philos-offs". Keep up the good work!
Justin Chevrier now, having demonstrated your unparalleled ability to pronounce the word do you feel better about yourself?
Don't most people pronounce it as "phili-soaf"?
Candide is the only book I've ever read in French ;-)
Did Voltaire write anything for that Encylcopedia which was composed around the time of the French Rev'n? I think it was in little sections and was part of the salon culture???
Anthea Bisgrove history and philosophy
really likes talking, enjoyable to listen to
Tom Matt Damon + John Richey Cena = Tom Richey
Please what was Voltaire and Montesquieu’s view on nature and culture
Why do you drink everytime there is a humming noise/buzz
Sune Pedersen lol lmao 😂😂😂 I was wondering too maybe it's to let him know to take a break
Do you know what the noise/buzz is for? Because if not your question is a little bit funny to me, and I think I could give an answer
@@crittinger what is it
it's a drinking game.....I bet he did videos until he couldn't …..lol

What about enlightenment in Germany 😢
I have addressed Kant and Frederick the Great in other lectures and I will discuss Kant briefly in a future installment of this series, which will be released sometime in the next week or so.
Tom Richey thank you so much for ur videos .. I have my exam on cultural history at delhi Uni .. ur videos r a great help always ..

I have to write answers in german ..had they been in English .. ur videos would have been just enough .. u explain so well 😊
You should also check out/talk about the philosophy of G. W. Leibniz, he had a big influence on the enlightenment, or J. Semler.
I am sorry, but John Locke and Voltaire both were Deists. John Locke just tried to stay out of trouble.

Hinduism doesn't believe in revealition but it's a philosophie not even a religion
So I'm at 4:33 and he hasn't point out 1 view by Voltaire.
By 7:00 he still hasn't dealt with the his philosophies.
My least favorite channel. Won't be back.
Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
Tom Richey nice one
Maan, you had to start peddling creationist apologetics.
Save it for church, Tom. Unsubscribed.
