  • How to install an air conditioner or ac installation depending on how you were brought up. Some people prefer to say air conditioner installation.
***If you live in a home built before 1978 please read this information www.epa.gov/lead. Your home may have lead paint and you don't want to create dust while working. A household vacuum cleaner shouldn't be used to clean the windowsill like I did in this video. Use wet cleaning methods to minimize lead dust created.

This literally is the only AC install video that actually covers any of the issues I had run into installing my first window AC. Not a single other one dealt with storm windows. I wish I had come across this amazing video before my install. You have restored my faith in humanity sir. Stay safe and safe journeys home (:

What I found most informative was the importance of the base wood piece to set on the sill and using a level to slightly adjust the unit to tilt back to spill off the condensation/water to the outside of the house. I was always in a hurry to install window units and rigged them up with props and such. This time I will do it properly!

I just bought this same ac tonight and needed a better instructions than the manual in the box.
This is probably the best "how to" video I have ever seen, because you explained everything in normal terms. I appreciated your comments about the L-brackets (I've never seen them in the past and didn't bother using them) and the use of a board on the back side of the sill (I opted out, too).
Like Michael, I especially liked that you are a "regular guy;" you admitted to losing a screw and gave the rest of us imperfect people the tip on what kind to buy to replace it, and you made general but pertinent conversation about the pending rain and running extra errands that delayed the install to the next day. The furry helper was a plus.
Thank you!! I saved this video to use as a refresher next summer.

This is a great instructional video. It is based on reality...old houses need props for double hung sash windows that don't stay up, and everybody has a dog (hello, Theo) who wants to help. There was a ton of good home owners tips that went way beyond just putting in an a/c...I watched this with great pleasure, and now I'm going to go finish my installation! Thanks!

Just so everyone knows. This guy actually knows what he's doing. I've seen professionals do it this way, and the board is key to success. I didn't think the board was essential when I first installed a window unit, because tons of other videos do without it. But all I got was hot air coming out. Turns out the tilt also helps with the flow of coolent so it flows properly and you get freezing cold air, not luke warm air. I also went ahead and got window weather sealing tape and window unit foam weather stripping to seal off my old drafty window. It helps a ton. For windows that face the sun most of the day you can also add window film that blocks uv to help too. Hope this helps more folks out there. Stay cool 😎

Take into account where you live and how hot it gets!! Here in upstate NY, it never gets to 100 degrees. It seldom gets to 90, but the humidity is horrific. In a case like this you don't want to go TOO small because you'll freeze up the unit and maybe break the fan - BUT you can go smaller than you would in a very hot place. You want that machine pretty much running constantly to get the humidity down. If you buy a unit that is too big, the temperature will drop like a rock before the humidity is taken out, and you won't be comfortable. The physical size of the unit matters. A normal size unit will be less likely to have problems with freezing up when used in a larger than usual space. This is a simple matter of how much condensation falls on how much of an area. The house I live in has about 1500 square feet and is easily cooled with 3 air conditioners totaling 21,000 btus. These would be totally insufficient in an area where the temperature is running at 95 or better for days at a time. I seldom have to run all three at the same time.

Great vid... staying with your current setup, think about adding a few coats of SPAR urethane to that pine so it lasts longer, otherwise it will 'mold up' on you. Maybe consider using thicker foam strips on above and below the unit for a better seal. Less leaks = better efficiency = less cooling costs. again, great vid.

Very helpful video. I have an older house where the wooden windows were replaced with insulated vinyl windows that fold down and inward for easier cleaning. As a result, the ledge of the window is above the original wooden sill, and there are latches where you’re supposed to screw in the upper brackets. Can’t put a screw through those obviously, so I’m not sure how it’s going to work out. Seems like my only option is to try and place the unit in the window and see how it fits. I’m installing it in a second floor window, so I may recruit my brother to help. Wish me luck.

Hi great video, just something to consider for the future the ductless or "mini-split" inverter units are the way to go. They are very quiet both inside and outside and with a variable speed compressor are highly efficient compared with traditional units (= lower utility bills). Installation is the only headache but I would think much much cheaper than installing central air. I have even seen some units that have up to 4 indoor units connected to one outdoor unit and all can be operated independently. May not be popular in the states but are everywhere in Australia. I use to do the same are you with installing and removing a window A/C seasonally and that becomes a pain after a number years especially if your have a bad back like me.

    • @hollyr8788
      @hollyr8788 3 роки тому +1

I just had a estimate for both ductless mini split and Central the central was half the cost as ductless.Yes they are nice but I would prefer central before any other alternative.

Back in the 70s I purchased a new house without air conditioning. This was the way all of the houses came and in the first early summer fans didn't do the job. My father said he had just what I needed so I drove 200 miles to get a window air conditioner. The unit was a mere 28,000 btu and weighed close to 250 lbs. With everything you did would not help the beast. I built a platform outside the window it was going in. I had to make a drain which was no problem, the only problem was 220 volt which I had to install. This was the end of my day off so I had to figure out how to ralse the beast and get it in the window. I had this brain storm idea, since the air did not go down the hall ore into the bedrooms. I checked the furnace and changed the filter and turned on the fan only. it sucked the cold air from the living room and sent it through the house. I had semi central air. I lived in the house for 6 years and never had a single problem cooling the house. If you use the furnace fan close off the vents in the basement as that really doesn't need to be cooled.

You really did a nice professional job on that! You should see what I do, oh my god it's comical 😂 I have an old window alot like yours and I stuff whatever I can underneath the a/c to get it to tilt back enough that it won't leak inside, and then I use bubble wrap with duck tape on the sides both inside and out to try and keep the weather and bugs from getting in 😂 It ends up looking like a horrendous mess but works well enough I guess. And I use maximum strength duck tape so it holds well but last year when I went to pull it off to take the a/c out the tape pulled some of my paneling off with it! Yeah, a real ugly mess I made and I'm about to be doing it all over tomorrow cause that's when I'm putting my a/c in YIKES!!! 🤪

Ha, I should reply that I loved this instruction video. It's practical! I can't imagine not having central air, but I'm in the South. I'm guessing you're further North. I need an A/C in a particular room that I want to make a few degrees cooler than the rest of the house. I was looking at these portable A/C's that sit directly in the room on the floor, but having thought it out, a window unit seems a better idea due to the water issue. It's this or maybe I'll have a ductless A/C unit installed but that requires drilling a hole through the wall. I'm not sure I really want to do that just so I can make one room a few degrees cooler. Window unit seems the best option. Great video that really shows us all kind of what to expect before even getting one of these A/C units. Thanks!

Heck. The remotes are a nice feature. Especially when you have an ac in the bedroom or if you have mobility issues. Also, I think the central units are supposed to be more efficient than running multiple window units. And if you;re running window units, 220 volt connections are supposed to be more efficient than 115 volt (or so I'm told).

You do not need to get CA "tuned in" every year. If you do you have a problem. You should never worry about a system until it dies from a bad capacitor, contactor etc(which are easy fixes for anybody). Or a compressor, which means you need a new unit.

I have a central air unit and it does run me about $200 every 2 years for service. The thing I hate are the service techs that always try and sell you a new unit.. R22 Freon is hard to find now which my unit takes so they give me the run around.. Blah Blah Blah.. So I am thinking about getting 3 10,000 BTU units which would cost me about $900 way cheaper then $8,000..Plus I would save power buy doing this because the central air just eats power.. 4,000 to 5,000 watts per hour.. Ouch.. For the window unit is 1,200 watts per hour for each one.. Still less then the central air unit..

Why didn't you remove the shell and install the shell because a single female may not be able to carry a full unit.

The installation instructions only show how to install the unit the way I did which is the way I have installed air conditioners my entire life. There are some with a removable cabinet but those are usually installed into a hole in the wall.
