Shogun: Which Side Is Yabushige Really On?

Kashigi Yabushige is seemingly playing both sides in Shōgun, but episode 4 has made it clear who is he truly loyal to. After helping Toranaga and his men flee Osaka, Yabushige is now welcoming them to Anjiro. The Lord of Izu was tasked with training his men with the help of John Blackthorne, Shōgun’s version of William Addams, who had access to tactics and weapons that the Japanese did not. However, what was supposed to be a period of training turned into the first chapter of a war at the end of Shōgun episode 4.
Samurai Nebara Josen and his men were sent by Ishido and the Council of Regent Lords to bring Yabushige back to Osaka, where he would respond to help Toranaga escape. Yabushige argued that he was working for Ishido this whole time and even invited Josen to watch an exhibition of the cannons’ firepower. The fact that Toranaga’s son used the cannon to attack Josenmakes things way more complicated for Yabushige, who might now have to pick a side and stick with it until the end of the war.
