I don't know how you can be both executive producer and main actor and still deliver a level of quality like this. Hiroyuki Sanada must be a great multi-tasker
@@yaseralharbi4641 executive producers are for financing but Hiroyuki Sanada is not an executive producer, just “producer”. I don’t know what he did in that role for Shogun, but in general producers do a ton for films. They handle most of the logistics like hiring people, scheduling, and commonly weighing in on all sorts of creative decisions
Kashigi Yabushige was my favorite character hands down. His mannerisms were so funny. The whole cast was awesome, lead and supporting, but Yabushige was my guy.
Yoshii Toranaga is the mythical embodiment of the famous japanese warlord, Ieyasu Tokugawa. Seeing Hiroyuki Sanada portray Toranaga is a treat. I wouldn't doubt the success of this series since, in my opinion, its casts are considered big stars in japan and are serious actors: Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira
His character is what makes the story very unique. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes deceitful, sometimes honourable, sometimes courageous, sometimes cowardly, sometimes wise and sometimes foolish. The book as well as the writrrs of the show have made him exceptional. And rightly that sob demands my respect and i gave him amply. Arigato yabu-sama
Yea i agree, even tho he had one man boiled to death in the first episode, i still liked his character. He was a sadist and that actor portrayed the lack of empathy and other traits that points towards the fact that he is a genuine psychopath fascinated by death very well.
As someone born back in the 70's, I grew up with the original show with Toshiro Mifune and Richard Chamberlain...loved it sooo much and saw it several times...more than 30 years later comes a remake and I must say although the main story is similar, there are many differences...I'm a huge fan of Hiroyuki Zanada and after being an awesome action oriented side character in many films, now he is the main star and the energy and charisma shining from him in the role of Toranaga is incredible! Like very much the new Mariko also, super devoted to her role...Blackthorne is okay, but actors playing Jabushido and Ishido are awesome in their roles too...New show is in much darker tone, but the level of authenticity and attention to detail is just mind blowing...Once I stopped comparing both shows, I started to truly enjoy the new one and can hardly wait from one week to another for the next episode...
i too loved the original, but I think the biggest difference between the original and the new one is that the original focused more on Blackthorne as the main character and the new one focused more on the story and the Japanese players in the story.
Other way round for me . He cant act is so wooden and his voice In real life far better than his richard burton impersonation as blackthorne. Terrible.
I absolutely am obsessed with this series. It's is so so well done. The acting is superb and cinematography is breath taking. Exceeded my expectations. It better win some awards. I look forward to more episodes. Please
Sadly it's been confirmed it was a one and done as it followed the storyline of the novel to its conclusion. Hopefully though they may try and adapt some of Clavell's other novels into a screenplay. e.g. Tai-Pan
The real star for me is Yabushige. His story arc and the acting was, for me, the most deep and poetic. Then Mariko, then Toranaga, then Anjin. All of them great however!!!
I think James Clavell and Toshiro Mifune would be proud of Hiroyuki Sanada's Toranaga. He's jaw dropping. And I think Anna is the definitive Mariko-san.
?? This is supposed to be about the making of... yet there are no 'behind the scenes' clips and absolutely NOTHING shown about the 'making of' folks. (Just a bunch of brief cameo comments from the cast!)
I really, REALLY want to know the primary camera/lens combo. It's the very first thing I noticed when I started watching. The vignette and anamorphism is spellbinding. It works beautifully in the storytelling.
The under appreciated acting and directing skills these characters and actors accomplished is the acting without saying a word. The facial expressions and body language, especially from the women actors are so subtle but meaningful and expressive that you hardly realize it. It’s something that good actors and directors understand and pull off. It is key in this period piece because women were suppressed and didn’t say much but yet the movie had to make it a big part of the movie because the women had key parts. Awesome!
One of the best made TV shows iv ever witnessed. I was so impressed I saw 10 episodes in 3 days. Couldn't take my eyes of it. Kosmo I think his name is played John so well. I hope to see him in more stuff. I'm shore Taranoka guy was in a film called sunshine with Cillian Murphy. I loved that film. Big thumb 👍 up to everyone who made this show. I was blown away by the story and a great finale. I'd love to see more about John's life after this and who he settled down with. I can't remember the women name. But I tought when they put the ashes into the water it was a emotional and loving moment between two cultures. Showing we are from different places. But we all have similar hearts . So very enjoyable series thanks fX
What a gift this is!!! By the end of the 1st episode, I saw a parallel between the events leading to another Civil War and the events in the USA taking the same route. (Don't mean to get political) but here's what I heard The Regent Council was appointed to protect the heir (our constitution). Instead, they seek to usurp the heir/Constitution and set up their own government and power. Toronaga has sworn to protect the heir (constitution) and said "We cannot allow the realm to be torn apart!" Of course, Toronaga is playing 3-D chess here and while he sees what's at stake and makes moves that will have a ripple effect. He well knows the character of those he defends the heir from the Regent Council is made up of individuals who have no honor, are weak, evil and power-hungry.

it's fun to watch, but not a very good adaptation of Clavell's novel. Clavell wrote it from the perspective of an Englishman stranded in Japan. This series has made him out to be a secondary character, rather than the main character, for whatever reason.
Just another of those videos filled with scenes from the film itself, short statements from the actors and very few actual production scenes. This is propaganda disguised as "Behind-the-Scenes The Making of" 😞
Hiroyuki Sanada better be winning some well deserved awards for this, not only the acting but also producer.
He really deserves it, he is great in this series

Amazing show. The writing, the cast, the costumes....... everything. We need more shows like this.
Turkish series are beautiful as well. My favourite one is Ertugrul.

I hate that the actor who plays Ichido is such a classy and well spoken man, goddamn you! 😄
Ha ha ha I know right? Look at that happy smile and his excellent English. 🥰
He really is classy and it shows even when he's playing Ishido
Lol I loved him and crushed on him in another show where he's the lead called Giri/Haji on Netflix. He's sooo different in Shogun, amazing!
This is the first work since directed by Akira Kurosawa that expresses the image of the Japanese samurai, and is a wonderful piece of work.

Yabushige probably the most likable rat in any film adaptations.
yeah i liked this son of B😄

SPOILERS: he even died a badass ! that nonchalant belly stab and the smile on his face when he looked back at Toranaga what a legend
I have to say the costumes in this show are exquisite
The 2 greatest Japanese actors of their time, Toshiro Mifune and Hiroyuki Sanada, each played Yoshi Toronaga (Tokugawa Ieyasu)
Mariko ep 9 blew me away... Incredibly powerful and fierce. Loved it!!!!
Yagushige character should have won something on the Emmy award. This guy is a fantastic actor!

Anna Sawai for Emmy best supporting actress she’s been incredible!!
you mean BEST ACTRESS!
Supporting? She's the mais character alongside Toranaga and John. By the way, she got the Best Actress award.
I like Buntaro. The show portrays him as an opponent to overcome for Blackthorne but he is a quintessential samurai.
Yeah he just wanted his wife to love him😂 and such a fucking badass
all the actors were incredible.
Shogun said s an amaaaaaazing show! We need more movies with Hiroyuki Sanada!! 🙏🙏🙏

This show was so fantastically done
Tadanobu Asano is a f*ck*ng monster. Best living actor, at least in Japan.

so mariko husband is still alive
If we don't see the dead on screen, then it is always a high chance that the character is still alive.
If you read the book, then yes, Buntaro lived after the Osaka escape.
